Born into a poor family, 8-year-old Fabrice moved to Yaounde (喀麦隆首都) with his sister in 1987. Every morning, he saw a Chinese man practicing kung fu in the square of the Yaounde Conference Center. “It was very beautiful,” said Fabrice. He and his friends soon began to imitate the foreigner.
One day, the man invited the boys to learn zhan zhuang, a kung fu training skill. However, it hurt their bodies so much that Fabrice’s friends gave up. Fabrice stayed and began learning more from his teacher. “He was very thin but at the same time very strong,” said the Chinese teacher.
After finishing school, Fabrice worked hard to make a living. In his free time, he continued to practice kung fu. He learned from videos and practiced in the square as his Chinese teacher once did.
In 2011, a teacher from the Confucius Institute invited Fabrice to learn about Chinese language and culture there. Four years later, Fabrice got a scholarship (奖学金) to be trained in kung fu and traditional Chinese medicine at the Shaolin Temple in Henan Province. Between 2015 and 2019, he went to the temple three times for training.

A famous story from New Book of Tang tells of Yang Yuhuan. She loved lychees (荔枝), a fruit that grew in faraway southern China and would easily go bad during transportation. To make her happy, Emperor Xuanzong ordered the riders to bring lychees to Chang’an. When the lychees finally arrived, they were still fresh. This makes people surprised at how fast the ancient postal (邮政的) system was!
In fact, China’s postal system started over 3,000 years ago in the Zhou Dynasty. Workers called “Xingfu” carried government orders and army messages. At that time, many places had institutions (机构) similar to post stations, but with different names. When the Qin State unified China, it made them use the same name—“You”, which is still used in China’s postal industry today.
While the postal system was well-developed during the Qin and Han dynasties, only the government could use it. Ordinary people had to depend on friends or family to send letters and other things.
During the Sui and Tang dynasties, the postal system took shape, centered around the capital and reaching all parts of the country. The poet Cen Shen wrote, “One post station after another, the post riders flow like stars, setting off from Xianyang in the morning and reaching the top of Mount Longshan in the evening.” This highly developed system allowed Yang to get her fresh lychees.
In the Ming Dynasty, “security escort agencies” appeared. People paid them to protect their money and safety during travel.
However, in the mid-19th century, China had to open its doors to the West. This led to big changes in the postal industry. Finally, in 1913, the ancient postal system officially came to an end.
23.Why does the text begin with a story?
A.To introduce the topic. B.To explain a book. C.To mention an emperor. D.To describe lychees.
24.What is the correct order of the following events?
①The postal system was mainly around the capital.
②Only the government could use the postal system.
③Many places had institutions similar to post stations.
A.①→②→③ B.①→③→② C.②→①→③ D.③→②→①
25.What does the underlined part “security escort agencies” probably mean in Chinese?
26.What is the best title for the text?
A.Big Changes in Money Safety B.Development of Lychee Business
C.Postal System in Ancient China D.Transportation in the Tang Dynasty
D
Creativity is hard to describe. On the one hand, we know people make creative breakthroughs (突破) when they have persistence (坚持). On the other hand, most of us give up when we get stuck on a problem, believing that our creativity gets weaker over time.
In fact, research shows that the longer we stick to a single problem or task, the more creative we get. One key reason for this is the “series order effect (序列顺序效应).” That is to say, each later creative idea is always better than the previous (之前的) one.
Some business companies fail to understand this point. Silicon Valley (硅谷) prizes youth over experience, believing that “people under 35 are those who make changes happen” while “people over 45 cannot create new ideas.” But many businessmen succeed in their 40s and beyond because they have repeatedly failed. The creators of the top highest-growth new companies are, in fact, around 45 years old.
Scientific talents show a similar feature (特点). Scientists usually do their best work near age 40. Nobel Prize winners and inventors also do much of their best work from their late 30s to mid-40s. Early success is great because it’s unusual, but the best way to achieve a breakthrough is to get stuck and get unstuck over and over again.
The “series order effect” works not just at the personal level but also at the level of companies and markets. Different from the belief in business that you have to be first, many of the most successful companies are those that have gone through early failures. For example, Google succeeded after twenty-two failures. Success can come when you have tried two, three, or even twenty-two times. Novelty (原创能力) is overvalued.
Persistence, however, is undervalued. So, the next time you’re stuck, remember: “You’re more creative than you think you are.”
27.According to Paragraph1, people may achieve creative breakthroughs when ________.
A.they keep on trying something B.their creativity becomes stronger
C.they stay away from hard problems D.they can describe creativity clearly
28.Which of the examples goes against the writer’s opinion?
A.Silicon Valley.
B.The creators of the top highest-growth new companies.
C.Scientific talents like Nobel Prize winners.
D.Google.
29.What can we know about the “series order effect” from the 5th paragraph?
A.It doesn’t work for big businesses.
B.It shows novelty is unnecessary.
C.It shows the importance of a good beginning.
D.It explains why failure is common and acceptable.
30.What is the best title for this article?
A.Creativity is hard to describe. B.Creativity becomes weaker as time goes.
C.Creativity is undervalued. D.Creativity comes from persistence.
Do all teenagers get pocket money?
Most teenagers receive pocket money every week. But not everyone gets the same amount of money. Have you asked your friends how much they get? You might be surprised. And if you’re a girl, you’ll be amazed to learn that boys often get more than girls of the same age!
So what happens in different countries?
Teenagers up to the age of about 15 in the UK have about £5 a week pocket money. But in Italy, France and Spain, the same age group gets about €9, which is a bit more. 31 Most teenagers get a weekly allowance of about $30, which is more than £20 or €23.
Do teens have to work for their pocket money?
Quite a lot of teenagers do. They have to do things in the house, like washing up and cleaning, and then they get their pocket money. If they don’t do the jobs, they don’t get the money. 32 That means they have more than their pocket money to spend each week.
33
You might be surprised at the answer. Teenagers in the UK spend more of their money on food than on clothes. Is that true for you, too? Teens do more shopping online than before and online clothes are cheaper, so perhaps this is one reason why they don’t spend so much on clothes.
Do parents tell teens how to spend pocket money?
Some parents do! 34 Other parents want their teens to save all their pocket money and spend it on something big in the future, or not spend it at all.
A.Some teenagers have part-time jobs, too.
B.They only let them buy some things.
C. What do teenagers think about their money?
D.What do teenagers spend their money on?
E. In the US, pocket money is called “an allowance”.
What is the best way to use your pocket money?

I used not only scissors but also knives to make it. I hope more people can enjoy this traditional Chinese art.

【答案】23.A 24.D 25.B 26.C
根据第一段“A famous story from New Book of Tang tells of Yang Yuhuan...This makes people surprised at how fast the ancient postal (邮政的) system was!”
24.根据第二段“many places had institutions (机构) similar to post stations”、第三段“only the government could use it”、第四段“the postal system took shape, centered around the capital”可知,事件顺序:③很多地方有类似驿站的机构→②只有政府可以使用邮政系统→①邮政系统以都城为中心,对应D选项。
25.根据第五段“People paid them to protect their money and safety during travel.”
【答案】27.A 28.A 29.D 30.D
第一段指出:“we know people make creative breakthroughs (突破) when they have persistence (坚持)”,这直接说明当人们坚持不懈地尝试时,就能取得创造性的突破,因此选A“they keep on trying something”。
28.第三段指出硅谷推崇年轻人,认为“people under 35 are those who make changes happen”和“people over 45 cannot create new ideas”,而作者在文中表达的观点是“But many businessmen succeed in their 40s and beyond because they have repeatedly failed”,强调年长者凭借坚持也能成功,因此硅谷的观点与作者的观点相悖,应选A“Silicon Valley”。
29.第五段说明“series order effect”不仅适用于个人,也适用于公司和市场,并用Google等公司经历多次失败后成功的例子说明“many of the most successful companies are those that have gone through early failures”,这表明失败是常见且可接受的,是通向成功的过程,应选D“It explains why failure is common and acceptable.”。
以及“You’re more creative than you think you are.”,因此文章最好的标题是D“Creativity comes from persistence.”。

32.根据“That means they have more than their pocket money to spend each week.” 故选A。
33.根据“Teenagers in the UK spend more of their money on food than on clothes.”
34.根据“Some parents do! ... Other parents want their teens to save all their pocket money...”
Balance spending, saving and reasonable investment in oneself.
