High school began with meeting new friends, which was the most exciting part of that period. However, I noticed the difference with middle school right away since students around me were trying their best to get good grades. As for me, I saw these years as our last opportunity to spend time together as a group.
It was surprising for me to find out that my friends, including my best friend, were no longer willing to meet very often after school. This made me realize that perhaps I failed to realize the true meaning of these final years. I should state that it became especially clear after I talked to my best friend. He told me that he was really worried because I seemed to have no plan when it came to preparing for college. To be completely honest, he was right.
Luckily, my best friend was wise and able to explain his point of view to me. Also, he offered to spend time studying with me and getting me ready for the test to make sure I did not miss out on anything meaningful from the textbook. This was surprising for me since I was confident that activities like reading textbooks could not be enjoyable. I was wrong, and this challenge taught me that having fun in high school does not just mean going to parties or spending time in cafes. Instead, you can have an enjoyable experience that will also be good for your future.
I am glad that I was able to learn from this situation. After some time had passed, I understood and was able to change my behavior and attitude toward studying in high school just in time. Now, I am studying harder to get more knowledge and try to understand which subjects I am most interested in to find out what I want to study in the future.

D. High school students should spend time on relaxing activities.
27. What does the author want to share in the text?
A. His friendship. B. His future goals.

If you thought running was just great for the body, then think again. Scientists have found that the sport not only keeps people fit but also improves your brain power (脑力).
The research found that people who keep fit are more likely to have larger brains, better memories and clearer thinking. They also found that unfit people tended to have smaller brains and reduced cognitive skills. The findings add to a growing body of evidence which links exercise with helping protect the brain against ageing (老化) and also helping it replace dying cells (死细胞). This might reduce the risk of many illnesses and diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
One research paper within its latest issue sees scientists at Kentucky University putting 30 adults aged 59–69 on a treadmill (跑步机). Their heart and lung capacity was measured and an MRI scanner was used to assess the blood flow to their brains. Those who were less fit had smaller brains compared to the fitter volunteers who had larger brains. Scientists in Germany followed 21 adults aged between 60–77. As they went through a three-month fitness program, they saw improvements in their memory. Researchers are not yet sure why exercise helps to protect brain cells but some research in mice has produced results. Mice, examined at the National Institute on Ageing, in Baltimore, found that cells in the hippocampus (海马体), an area of the brain used for memory, were actively reproducing while their fatter peers were in decline.
Linda Clare, professor of clinical psychology of ageing and dementia at Exeter University and a member of the Global Council on Brain Health told The Sunday Times: “Moderate intensity aerobic (有氧的) activity such as walking, cycling or running can produce changes in brain structure and function.”
28. Who tend to have larger brains, better memories and clearer thinking?
A. People who are healthy. B. People who are thin.
C. People who are unhealthy. D. People who are fat.
29. What do we learn from the experiment in paragraph 3?
A. Those who were less fit had larger brains.
B. Those who were fitter had smaller brains.
C. Exercise helps people improve their memory.
D. Old people doing exercise improve memory better than young people.
30. According to Linda Clare, what kind of activity can NOT produce changes in brain structure and function?
A. Walking. B. Singing. C. Cycling. D. Running.
31. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To tell you sport improves your brain power.
B. To introduce some good ways to keep healthy.
C. To teach you how to best spend time doing sports.
D. To introduce several ways to improve your memory.
D
Nowadays, handwriting seems to become less necessary, for young children learn to tap and touch screens before they have even learned to pick up a pencil or tie their shoelaces. Most of our written communication is done through texting on mobile phones or typing on a keyboard. And voice recognition softwares are becoming more and more advanced — making even keyboards unnecessary!
So, are handwriting skills important to your child? Actually, handwriting is an exercise in eye-hand coordination (协调), an important part of visual-motor (视觉运动) skills, which are connected with achievement s in study. Scientists found that developing fine visual-motor skills in early childhood can lead to not only writing success, but better performance in reading and math in elementary school. It was also found that kids who fail to write neatly and efficiently are often accused of being lazy, and this may affect their behavior and self-worth. Moreover, a study showed that when a group of children were asked to come up with ideas for an article, the ones with better handwriting were more active and had quicker minds. In some ways, handwriting helps their brains’ development.
The first attempts at writing can be challenging for pre-school children — whose fine motor skills are not yet fully developed. But some skills to prepare for handwriting are simple to build at home and in preschool. Parents should provide lots of opportunities for kids to copy and draw shapes and simple pictures in early childhood before letters are introduced. Let your child copy your shapes in sand, or with chalks on a board before trying to draw the shapes on their own. Encourage your child to spend less time on electronic devices and more time on activities to improve eye-hand coordination.
Let’s face it — technology is certain to continue developing and more research is needed to find the best ways to teach handwriting to young children. But, there’s plenty of evidence that the handwriting practice can provide young children with a good start in developing skills needed for a healthy and successful journey in school.
32. According to Paragraph 1, what can we learn about handwriting?
A. easy to learn on a touch screen B. used less frequently now
C. more difficult than typewriting D. totally replaced by software
33. How does the author explain the benefits of handwriting?
A. By presenting some research findings.
B. By giving some news reports on hand-writing.
C. By mentioning examples of the kids around him.
D. By providing data about pupils with good grades.
34. What does the author suggest parents do?
A. Keep young children away from electronic devices.
B. Teach pre-school children to write letters with chalks.
C. Help children get ready for handwriting before school.
D. Encourage children to face writing challenges bravely.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Does poor handwriting really mean being lazy?
B. How can handwriting affect children’s self-confidence?
C. Should handwriting be taken seriously in children’s growth?
D. Should homework be done through handwriting or typewriting?

第二节 书面表达 (Possible version)
Dear Lucy,
Glad to receive your letter. I totally understand your trouble — senior high study is busy, but fitting in exercise is totally possible! Actually, sports aren’t a waste of time. They help you relax, sharpen your focus, and keep your body strong, which definitely makes study more efficient.
Here are some possible ways. You can do 10-minute stretching or skipping during breaks between classes. Walk or ride a bike to school instead of taking a bus. On weekends, spend 30 minutes on your favorite sport like yoga or tennis — fun activities are easier to stick to.
Small steps add up! Give these a try, and you’ll feel more energetic soon. Looking forward to your good news!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Although we are sad to see him go, we are happy for him, too. He has told us that this decision has been very hard for him. ⑱ However, his mother has become ill, and it is the right decision for his family. Unfortunately, Mr. Jenkins will not be able to end the year with us, ⑲ as he is traveling back to his hometown this Friday. This means we won’t have time for a proper goodbye celebration, but we hope you will all visit him before he leaves. ⑳ And finally, to show respect for our good friend, we will be naming the gymnasium “Jenkins’s Gym” at the end of the month. Taking over his duties until summer vacation will be Mr. Ryan. We also have a goodbye card you can sign at the office. Thank you for your attention and have a good day.
