Saahil Mehta, a 40-year-old Indian living in the United Arab Emirates, believes in gifting his two children, Yuvraj, 8 and Alisha, 6, experiences rather than material possessions (东西) to celebrate special occasions. This could be in the form of a visit to a theme park or a staycation in a new hotel.
“As a result, their desire to buy things has gone down. This is our way of addressing their basic needs,” said Mehta.
In December 2019, Mehta took the family to visit the Indian city of Dharamshala where they spent time with poor children in a school. This was an eye-opener for Alisha and Yuvraj, as they realised that what was normal for them was a treat for those kids. “For those kids, it is a blessing (幸福) to be able to attend school. This experience taught my kids to count their blessings,” said Mehta.
During the holiday, the Mehta family gave away pens and pencils to 250 children. This helped Alisha and Yuvraj understand the cost difference in schooling. “They notice how much we spend on their education. The difference in costs helped them make a comparison,” explained Mehta.
Back home, the kids are encouraged to do basic housework like making their beds, opening curtains, etc. But Mehta never gives them money for doing those things. This way, they are taught that everyone has to chip in to keep the household running. When they do other tasks beyond the essentials, like massaging the mother’s shoulders, etc., Mehta pays them a small amount.
Pointing out a weakness in the education system, Mehta said children don’t get any experience in financial literacy (知识) until they attend university. The father is planning to introduce the concept of a family bank to his children. He also wants his children to pay attention to financial pitfalls such as spending beyond their means, too much use of credit cards, etc. He has set a plan on how money will be spent on some needs. It’s up to his children to use the money carefully.
24.What do we know about Mehta’s way of gifting his children?
A.It isn’t really to their liking.
B.It changes the way they buy things.
C.It allows him to connect with them.
D.It teaches them about spending money wisely.
25.What did Mehta’s children learn during the visit to Dharamshala?
A.They should appreciate what they have.
B.They should make friends with the poor.
C.They should cut the cost of their education.
D.They should treat different people differently.
26.Why did Mehta refuse to pay his children for doing housework?
A.To warn that they must work hard to make money.
B.To show that it’s what they’re supposed to do.
C.To encourage them to be selfless and careful.
D.To force them to develop a good habit.
27.What is the problem with the education system according to Mehta?
A.It doesn’t prepare children for money management.
B.It doesn’t suggest the importance of saving money.
C.It doesn’t encourage children to pay with cash.
D.It doesn’t teach children ways to make money.
C
Young people are perhaps betterknown for spending money than saving it. But some new banking websites are seeking to change that. These websites offer young people the information and tools they need to watch over their money. The websites also let the users share their financial experiences with other young people.
Nineteenyearold Alix Scott has been working at a store this summer. She is saving money to pay for college next year.“I have to save for all my college money because my parents can’t afford to cosign on loans. So, I have to rely on my own savings.”
But instead of putting her money in a local bank, Miss Scott began using SmartyPig, a webbased banking service.
SmartPig was developed by Michael Ferrari with a friend in 2007. It is really all about helping people save for very specific goals, such as a wedding, a vacation or an iPhone.
Michael Ferrari said: “For example, you want to save five thousand dollars for a vacation in three years. SmartyPig will actually calculate how much money you need to save every month. You don’t have to move from your existing bank, we’ll actually go in and withdraw those funds on the day you specify every month and we’ll put it into your SmartyPig account, where it’ll earn interest, as well.”
SmartyPig also enables outsiders to add money to the accounts of its users. “Perhaps a holiday is coming up or your birthday is coming up, and rather than getting a gift, your friends, your family can actually contribute to any of your SmartyPig goals.” Mr.Ferrari said. He believes that as technology continues to develop, more and more people will use the electronic banking sites.
A growing number of young people have shown an interest in online banking sites like SmartyPig. They say they like the ease of operation and services the sites offer. These personal finance websites offer tools that help users follow their spending, set up a budget, and combine their investments. And they all involve social media, which interests young adults who are already at ease about sharing their personal information online.

In the past decade, the use of social media has grown in a way that no one could have guessed. It has turned some teenagers into celebrities (名人) and turned the famous into the infamous, overnight.
A key feature of social media, however, is its volatility. Trends come and go, disappearing almost as quickly as they appeared. So, what were the key social media trends of 2019?
Short video apps such as TikTok and its Chinese equivalent Douyin, took the world by storm. The Telegraph reported that TikTok was ranked 8th on Apple’s App Store in April. And Douyin had more than 300 million domestic monthly active users in June, CNBC said.
Why are these short videos — which are rarely longer than a few minutes — so popular? Jiang Yige, Singapore-based analyst at FengHe Fund Management, has a theory. Short videos are “just right to fill in the little gaps in our busy schedules”, he told CNBC.
These videos — apart from being very convenient — are important to teenagers because they allow them to express themselves, according to Teen Vogue.
The sense of community that users of short video apps get is another appealing feature. Liza Koshy, a user of the US app Musically who has over 2 million followers, said that she was thrilled when anyone said that her video had “inspired” him. “It’s really cool...because I think that as short video creators that’s what we all expect,” she added.
Live streaming is another feature of our social media life that now seems as natural as sunrise. It’s a pretty neat idea: You can watch anyone, anywhere, live.
However, China has taken live streaming to a whole new level. In China, more than 100 million viewers monthly watch a live streaming video. Forbes thought that a number of factors had led to the popularity of live streams. Among them is viewers’ ability to interact while remaining anonymous.
However, the boom in social media may be having side effects too. Fake news is one serious problem it arguably causes. Material shared on these platforms is often not checked for accuracy. The most basic content can be false and can sway users one way or another. We use social media all the time; that doesn’t mean that we understand the influence it is having on us. We should be mindful of both the time we spend on it and its impact on our minds.
32.The underlined word “volatility” in Paragraph 2 possibly means “being ”.
A.changeable B.steady
C.promising D.violent
33.According to Liza Koshy, short videos are very popular because .
A.they are very convenient
B.they help people kill time
C.they provide a sense of community
D.they allow people to express themselves
34.What can we learn about social media from the text?
A.The information from social media is highly reliable.
B.When it comes to social media, people know short videos the best.
C.People can’t communicate with each other without social media.
D.There is still much room for social media to make improvement.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Rapid Development of Social Media
B.Key Social Media Trends of 2019
C.Short Videos Taking the World by Storm
D.Live Streaming — A New Feature of Social Media

It was an ordinary Sunday morning. The sun was coming out from the clouds, casting a warm light over the park. Amy was running along the winding path, her feet hitting the ground in a steady rhythm. She loves running because she believes that after a tough week at work, it could not only exercise her body but also free her mind from stress and exhaustion.
Every Sunday, the park was alive with activities. Children were chasing each other on the grass. Elderly people were practicing tai chi in slow, graceful movements. Young couples were walking hand in hand by the lake. Amy breathed deeply, taking in the fresh smell of flowers. Her steps felt light and her heart was at peace. Everything felt perfect.
Suddenly, a sharp cry cut through the morning calm. Amy slowed down and saw a crowd gathering near the fountain, their faces filled with panic. She ran toward them, pushing through the circle of people. An old woman was lying on the ground, her face pale and her lips slightly purple. Beside her, another elderly woman was shouting, “She’s having a heart attack! Please help her!” People stood frozen, some dialing emergency numbers, but no one gave her a hand.
Amy’s mind raced. Her friend Harriet, a nurse at the city hospital, had once asked her to attend a public welfare activity for CPR (心肺复苏) training in her community three months ago. She remembered rolling her eyes at the practice dummy (假人), whispering to Harriet that she would never need such boring knowledge. Never in her wildest dreams had she imagined facing a real emergency like this. At that time, she was more interested in the small gifts provided than the training itself. Now, staring at the struggling woman, whose breath grew weaker and eyes began to roll back, Amy knew she was the only hope. Taking a deep breath, she forced her shaking legs to move forward, her heart beating wildly as if jumping out of her chest, and explained that she had learned CPR.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
“Let me try,” Amy placed her hands on the old woman’s chest.

What did you think of that movie? I didn't really like IT much. really. I thought I was pretty good because the scenery was the most fascinating. That's true. They might even win an award for that. So why did you say you didn't like IT? I thought the story moved along too slowly. I like movies with more action in them. Well, IT was a romantic movie, not an action film. True. but IT seemed like nothing happened other than people talking. Well, I enjoyed the talking. I like things either romantic or comic. What about the actors? Did you like them? I usually . like the guy who start in the film, but I don't think he did a very good job this time. Well, I thought he was great. I almost cried in the end. I did too. Dear Jenny,
I really like the idea of hosting an English Week. Between the two activities, I would choose the English Song Competition. For one thing, singing English songs is an easy way to polish our pronunciation and accumulate vocabulary. For another, it creates a relaxing atmosphere, encouraging more shy students to participate. Unlike storytelling, it combines fun with language learning perfectly. I firmly believe it will make our English Week more attractive and memorable.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Jenny,
I really like the idea of hosting an English Week. As for the two activities, I prefer English Storytelling. It can greatly strengthen our logical thinking and oral English competence. When preparing stories, we gain access to various cultural knowledge. Moreover, sharing stories with classmates deepens communication. It helps us apply English flexibly, which benefits our long-term English study more.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.例文
“Let me try,” Amy placed her hands on the old woman’s chest. She tried her best to recall every step of CPR she had learned in the training, pressing down on the chest steadily with the correct strength and rhythm. After several cycles, Amy bent down to give rescue breaths. Sweat ran down her face, but she didn’t stop. The crowd held their breath and watched silently, their anxious eyes fixed on the pale face beneath her. After what felt like forever, the old woman coughed weakly, and Amy’s heart leaped with hope. Just then, a sound of an ambulance grew louder.
As Amy’s strength was fading, she noticed the ambulance arriving. The paramedics rushed to the old woman and took over the rescue work. Amy stepped back, her legs worn out, but she kept her eyes on the old woman. Within minutes, the woman’s color slowly returned, and she began to breathe steadily. A medic patted Amy’s shoulder and said, “You saved her.” All the people around broke into cheers. At that moment, Amy realized every small skill we learn, even if we think it useless at first, can be a bright light to pull others out of danger one day.

28.What do we know about SmartyPig?
A.It was created in 2008.

D.Can often receive free gifts from SmartyPig
30.The last paragraph mainly talks about________.
A.how to save money on SmartyPig

Being responsible is universally agreed to be one of the keys to success. 36 Instead, it takes a long time for kids to develop this difficult yet beautiful habit. So, how should parents teach their kids to be responsible for their duties?
·Start early. If you haven’t taught your kids responsibility, you can’t suddenly blame them for acting irresponsibly. Begin teaching responsibility when your kid is very young. 37
·Guide your children. It’s important for a parent to understand kids’skill level and give them tasks suitable for the skill level. 38 First, show your kids where the watering pot is kept and then show how the plants are watered. Also, explain why plants need regular watering. Even your kids can help out as long as you guide them carefully.
·Talk about responsibility. 39 Children who hear this word from an early age also quickly understand the meaning of responsibility. When you give your kids tasks, be sure to tell them that it’s their “responsibility” to complete the tasks.
· 40 The best way your kids will learn to act responsibly is by observing you and other family members. Show your responsibility by acting in a responsible manner at all times in front of your children. By observing your actions your kids will slowly learn to be responsible.
A.Be a role model.
B.Avoid constant rewards.
C.Unfortunately, responsibility can’t be learnt overnight.
D.Your praise will go a long way in making your kids responsible.
E.The earlier you start off, the sooner you can teach your kids to be responsible.

The summer vacation in New Delhi begins on May 1st every year. Much before it began we started planning how to spend it. I suggested that we should go to Shillong. But my sister insisted that we see Darjeeling. My father decided that we would go to both places with one month’s stay at each place.
So, it was decided that we would be going first to Shillong and then to Darjeeling. We left the New Delhi Railway Station four days after the vacation began. It was a very long and tiring journey. The train reached Guwahati in the evening.
The next day, early in the morning we drove to Shillong. We stayed there for nearly a month in the hotel. The climate was no doubt cool and pleasant, but there were very few places of interest.
We left Shillong on June 4th. On our way to Darjeeling, we traveled by train. We saw thick forests and beautiful tea gardens. We reached Darjeeling at about noon. We took a taxi and went to a hotel where reservations had been earlier arranged by my father. One day we went to the Tiger Hills by taxi at 4 a.m. to enjoy the famous sunrise. It was a wonderful sight which we had never seen before. And that was the last day of our vacation.

【答案】24.D 25.A 26.B 27.A
根据第一段“Saahil Mehta, a 40-year-old Indian living in the United Arab Emirates, believes in gifting his two children, Yuvraj, 8 and Alisha, 6, experiences rather than material possessions ( 东西) to celebrate special occasions. This could be in the form of a visit to a theme park or a staycation in a new hotel.( Saahil Mehta是一位居住在阿联酋的40岁印度人,他认为在庆祝特殊场合时,给他的两个孩子,8岁的Yuvraj和6岁的Alisha,提供体验式礼物而不是物质礼物是有意义的。这可能包括去主题公园游玩或者在新酒店度过一段假期。)”以及第二段中“As a result, their desire to buy things has gone down. This is our way of addressing their basic needs(因此,他们购买东西的欲望下降了。这是我们解决他们基本需求的方式)”可知,Mehta 在庆祝一些特殊的日子时,不会送孩子们物质的东西。他可能会带孩子们去主题公园游玩或者在家附近新开的酒店度假。他的这种做法让孩子们没那么看重物质的东西,自然,他们会觉得没必要花钱去购买非必需品。故选D。
25.推理判断题。由第三段中的“This was an eye-opener for Alisha and Yuvraj, as they realised that what was normal for them was a treat for those kids. (这让Alisha和Yuvraj大开眼界,因为他们意识到,对他们来说很正常的事情,对那些孩子来说却是一种享受。)”以及本段中““For those kids, it is a blessing ( 幸福) to be able to attend school. This experience taught my kids to count their blessings,” said Mehta.(“对这些孩子来说,能够上学是一种福气。这次经历教会了我的孩子们要珍惜自己的幸福。”Mehta说)”可知,这次旅行让Mehta的孩子们意识到他们拥有很多东西,他们应该感恩。故选A。
倒数第二段中“But Mehta never gives them money for doing those things. This way, they are taught that everyone has to chip in to keep the household running. (但Mehta从不给他们钱。通过这种方式,他们被教导每个人都必须出力来维持家庭的运转。)”可知,Mehta拒绝给他的孩子做家务的钱,其目的是让孩子们意识到自己是家庭的一员,有义务去做家务。故选B。
27.推理判断题。由最后一段中的“Pointing out a weakness in the education system, Mehta said children don’t get any experience in financial literacy (知识) until they attend university. (Mehta指出了教育系统的一个弱点,他说,孩子们在上大学之前没有任何金融知识的经验。)”可知,在当前的教育体制下,孩子们从小理财知识匮乏,即教育体系不会让孩子们为理财做好准备。故选A。
28.What do we know about SmartyPig?

【答案】32.A 33.C 34.D 35.B
根据第二段第二句“Trends come and go, disappearing almost as quickly as they appeared. (潮流来了又走,消失的速度几乎和出现的速度一样快。) ”可知,发展趋势来得快消失得也快。这句话是在解释画线词语,因此volatility意为“易变”,A项“易变的”符合。B项“稳定的”、C项“有希望的”和D项“猛烈的,暴力的”均不符合语境。故选A。
根据第六段前两句“The sense of community that users of short video apps get is another appealing feature. Liza Koshy, a user of the US app Musically who has over 2 million followers, said that she was thrilled when anyone said that her video had “inspired” him. (短视频应用的用户获得的社区感是另一个吸引人的特点。拥有200多万粉丝的美国应用程序“音乐”的用户丽莎·科西说,当有人说她的视频“启发”了他时,她很激动。)”可知,按Liza Koshy所说,短视频非常受欢迎在于它的另一个吸引人的特点:短视频应用程序的用户获得了社区意识。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段前四句“However, the boom in social media may be having side effects too. Fake news is one serious problem it arguably causes. Material shared on these platforms is often not checked for accuracy. The most basic content can be false and can sway users one way or another. (然而,社交媒体的繁荣也可能产生副作用。假新闻可以说是它造成的一个严重问题。在这些平台上分享的材料通常没有经过准确性检查。最基本的内容可能是虚假的,可以以这样或那样的方式影响用户。)”可知,社交媒体上传播的虚假新闻是一个严重问题,这会影响用户。因此社交媒体还存在问题,仍旧有很大的改进空间。故选D。
35.主旨大意题。根据第二段“A key feature of social media, however, is its volatility. Trends come and go, disappearing almost as quickly as they appeared. So, what were the key social media trends of 2019? (社交媒体的主要特征是它的易变性。发展趋势来得快消失得也快。2019年社交媒体的主要趋势是什么?)”可知,文章接下来回答了这个问题。因此B项“2019年的主要社交媒体趋势”作为文章标题最合适。故选B。
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Being responsible is universally agreed to be one of the keys to success. 36 Instead, it takes a long time for kids to develop this difficult yet beautiful habit. So, how should parents teach their kids to be responsible for their duties?

F.Child experts often recommend parents to use the word “responsibility” in front of kids.
G.For example, you can give your 5-year-old kid the responsibility of watering the plants.
【答案】36.C 37.E 38.G 39.F 40.A
根据第一段第一句“Being responsible is universally agreed to be one of the keys to success.(负责任被普遍认为是成功的关键之一。)”可知本文的话题关于责任,结合空格后句出现转折“Instead, it takes a long time for kids to develop this difficult yet beautiful habit.(相反,孩子们需要很长时间来养成这个困难但美好的习惯。)”
(尽早开始)”可知本段主要内容主要是说明培养责任要趁早,结合空格前句说明“Begin teaching responsibility when your kid is very young. (在孩子很小的时候就开始教授责任。)”可知,越早开始教授孩子责任,那么孩子就越早学会。由此可知E项“你越早开始,你就能越早教会你的孩子负责任。” 符合因果解释关系,故选E项。
38.根据小标题“Guide your children. (引导你的孩子)”可知本段讲的是如何引导孩子负责任,空格前句表明“It’s important for a parent to understand kids’ skill level and give them tasks suitable for the skill level. (父母了解孩子的技能水平,给他们设置适合他们技能水平的任务是很重要的。)”和空格后“ First....also...”
(谈论责任)”可知本段建议根孩子谈论责任,结合空格后说“Children who hear this word from an early age also quickly understand the meaning of responsibility. (从小听到这个词的孩子也能很快理解责任的含义。)”可知,孩子对责任这个词听得多那么也会更快的理解责任,由此可知F选项“儿童专家经常建议父母在孩子面前使用“责任”这个词。”提供谈论责任的建议,且空格后“this word”可指代F选项中的the word “responsibility”。故选F项。
40.本题设空在句首,根据前文结构可知,第一句为小标题且是祈使句,下文内容“The best way your kids will learn to act responsibly is by observing you and other family members.Show your responsibility by acting in a responsible manner at all times in front of your children. By observing your actions your kids will slowly learn to be responsible. (你的孩子学会负责任地做事的最好方法是通过观察你和其他家庭成员。在你的孩子面前,时刻以负责任的态度表现你的责任。通过观察你的行为,你的孩子会慢慢学会负责任。)”可总结出,本段是建议父母以身作则,做孩子的榜样。所以A项“做个榜样”符合段落内容中心主旨,故选A项。

Dear Jenny,
I really like the idea of hosting an English Week.
Yours,
Li Hua

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
