Self-help books are everywhere, but only a few offer ideas that can genuinely improve how we think, feel and live. Below are four widely recommended books that serve such purposes.
The Courage to Be Disliked
The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi is written as a dialogue between a philosopher and a young man. The book challenges the belief that we must satisfy everyone around us. It teaches readers to separate their own responsibilities from others’ expectations. Once the fear of being disliked is removed, people often act more honestly and feel lighter and more confident as a result.
Rapport
Written by psychologists Emily and Laurence Alison, Rapport focuses on how people connect through conversation. Based on their work in tense and even dangerous situations, the authors show how cooperation depends on understanding different communication styles. By learning when to listen, when to lead, and when to adjust tone, readers can reduce conflicts and enhance collaboration with coworkers.
Secure
In Secure, psychologist Amir Levine explains why people behave so differently in their interactions with others. Levine provides practical tools to help readers become more emotionally stable. The book also encourages readers to notice their reactions and communication needs clearly. By understanding themselves better, readers can build calmer and more stable connections with friends and family members.
Four Thousand Weeks
In this book, Oliver Burkeman suggests focusing on what truly matters now rather than trying to do everything perfectly. The book encourages readers to accept limits, stop endless planning, and enjoy small, meaningful moments. By letting go of pressure and unrealistic goals, readers may discover a calmer and more satisfying way to live.
21.What might the readers gain from Rapport?
A.Careful life-planning. B.Better self-assessment.
C.Improved teamwork. D.Strengthened family bonds.
22.Whose book may attract a reader longing for a stable friendship?
A.Amir Levine’s. B.Ichiro Kishimi’s.
C.Oliver Burkeman’s. D.Emily and Laurence Alison’s.
23.What do the four books have in common?
A.They present advice mainly through dialogues.
B.They encourage reflection on thinking patterns.
C.They promise a quick fix with simple techniques.
D.They’re written by experts based on their experiences.

Imagine travelling around in space and time: visiting ancient Egypt, walking on the moon, and riding a flying dinosaur. Mary Pope Osborne brought that to life in Magic Tree House, a widely loved series about Jack and Annie. Jack and Annie discover a tree house where there are many books and they take them to different places and times in imagination.
The first Magic Tree House book was published in 1992. There are now more than 100books in the series, with the latest coming out this month. But it took Osborne a while to work out what her passion was. Once she finally realised that writing was her true love, she started off at once.
When Osborne began writing, she would leave the house with her notebook and go to libraries, cafes or parks, where she could draw inspiration from the surroundings. She could write as long as she was away from home, and she kept that habit for the first 15 years of the series.
If Osborne was really excited about something, she might get up at 5:30 a. m. to write with great joy. Some other writers suffer from self-doubt and writer’s block, but she never had those things. In her eyes, every word she put on paper was a prize. Although 80% of what she produced failed to see the light of day, she never felt regretful or angry. She just worked hard to perfect her stories.
Osborne keeps so many notebooks with simple words in them — words that come alive for her. She'd take notecards in her bag, walk all over New York City and stop to write notes about things that caught her attention and words she liked. She called them “living words”: words of the senses, the weather, the light...
24.What can we read in Magic Tree House?
A.Jack was visiting ancient China. B.Mary was walking on Mars.
C.Jack was riding a flying dinosaur. D.Mary was swimming in Egypt.
25.What was Osborne's writing habit?
A.Writing away from home. B.Always writing at home.
C.Ignoring interesting living words. D.Sleeping until noon for writing tasks.
26.What did Osborne value most?
A.Getting up early to write. B.Overcoming self-doubt.
C.Polishing her stories. D.Winning every prize.
27.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Osborne's early writing habits and inspiration.
B.Mary Pope Osborne and her creative world.
C.How to collect living words easily.
D.Jack and Annie's space travel.
C
Against the backdrop of a growing water crisis in India, an ancient underground, labyrinth-like (迷宫样的) structure is emerging as one solution to boosting its shrinking reserves — stepwells. The complex, terraced (梯田状的) water storage was once the lifeblood of Indian communities — developed centuries ago to store and access water for drinking, agriculture and industry, and it also functioned as a local gathering spot.
Today, many of these architectural wonders have been damaged — victims of neglect, pollution and a rapidly urbanizing India. But Indian environmentalist Arun Krishnamurthy, has made it his new mission to tap into this technology of the past, to secure water for its future. For almost 20 years, Krishnamurthy has worked to bring India's decreasing bodies of water back to life through his organization Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI).
EFI has restored 657 water bodies across 19 states — from lakes to ponds, and most recently stepwells. “Stepwell restoration is the next big challenge that I would like to add to EFI's responsibilities because we have a greater responsibility now for protecting the historical heritage, which is evidence of human intelligence,” Krishnamurthy says.
EFI already draws on the stepwell design principles of its ancestors to guide its lake and pond restoration efforts. “They include the engineering, land use, understanding the water flows, the storage parameters (参数): How were the steps built? Where was the palm tree planted? How was the canal cut?” Krishnamurthy says, “So we take lessons from the past, and adapting them to the present-day challenges is what we are carrying out.”
Despite his extensive experience in recovering freshwater bodies, Krishnamurthy says stepwells are uniquely demanding. Restoring these ancient structures calls for specialized traditional knowledge and craftsmanship — and even after they are revived, human destruction makes their maintenance an ongoing struggle. Krishnamurthy says these stepwells will need public responsibility to safeguard their future.
28.What can we learn about stepwells from paragraph 1?
A.They are freshly constructed water projects.
B.They are built on the ground for easy access.
C.They served multiple purposes in ancient India.
D.They were designed to deal with industrial waste.
29.What does Krishnamurthy think of restoring stepwells?
A.It is a duty and a challenge.
B.It is costly but meaningful.
C.It is easy with modern tools.
D.It is based on lake restoration.
30.What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 4?
A.To describe the structure of old stepwells.
B.To stress the necessity of water protection.
C.To explain the difficulty in restoring stepwells.
D.To show the value of ancient stepwell wisdom.
31.What is needed to protect stepwells in the long run according to Krishnamurthy?
A.Steady urbanization. B.Community involvement.
C.Modern engineering. D.More government funding.
D
During World War II, people on some Pacific islands saw Allied airplanes land carrying food and tools called “cargo”. After the war ended and the planes stopped coming, some islanders created practices to try to bring them back. They built fake runways out of dirt, made wooden control towers, and wore coconut headphones, copying what soldiers did. They believed that if they copied these actions, the cargo planes would return. But the planes never came. In 1974, physicist Richard Feynman used this story to describe a problem in science, calling it “cargo cult science”.
According to Feynman, cargo cult science refers to practices that follow all the outward appearances and rigorous forms of scientific investigation — such as using precise statistics, writing formatted papers, and conducting experiments — but lack the essential core of scientific integrity. This missing core is a specific type of absolute honesty: a willingness to actively prove oneself wrong, publish failed results, and expose every potential flaw in one’s own theory. Without this deep intellectual honesty, all the complex technical machinery of research is just a meaningless performance, unable to produce true discovery.
Today, education experts say many students show a similar pattern, called “cargo cult learning”. Students may spend long bours highlighting books, working in stylish coffee shops, and using apps to track study time. They copy the visible habits of good students, creating the feeling of hard work. But these surface actions often hide weak real thinking. Simply making neat notes or doing many practice problems without deep thinking or learning from mistakes leads to little progress. They often feel productive, but the learning is shallow and quickly forgotten over time.
The main lesson is that success does not come from copying the outside forms of work True learning needs real understanding, which includes facing confusion, questioning ideas, and seeking clear understanding instead of only appearance. Real growth requires embracing difficulty, learning from errors, and focusing on understanding rather than performance or appearance itself fully.
32.Why did the islanders imitate what Allied soldiers had done?
A.They attempted to attract more tourists.
B.They wanted to resolve a scientific problem.
C.They tried to drive away foreign Allied soldiers.
D.They expected cargo planes to return with supplies.
33.What does the underlined word “rigorous” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Strict. B.Casual. C.Simple D.Flexible
34.Which of the following shows “cargo cult learning”?
A.Digesting knowledge after practice B.Spending much time on fancy notes.
C.Thinking deeply while doing exercises. D.Learning lessons from previous mistakes.
35.What might be the best title of the text?
A.Growth and True Learning B.Cargo Cult Science and Fake Effort

Everyone has a story to tell. The challenge lies in getting that story out of your head and into print in a way that your audience can relate to. Here are several tips to refer to.
Find an engaging topic.
36 Although the story itself is unique to the author’s experience, there’s some universal truth that speaks to us from just below the surface. Topics like facing a fear, overcoming a challenge, discovering something new, or making a difficult choice tackle feelings and events that happen in everyone’s life.
Create an outline.
All it takes to understand the importance of an outline is listening to someone who struggled to tell a personal story. 37 The switchbacks (转折) where the teller says “But wait, I have to tell you about this part, first!” are maddening and disturbing. An outline will help you organize your thoughts before committing them to text. 38
Close your eyes. Think of the scene you’re about to write down. What were you experiencing with your five senses? How did you feel? Your challenge is to describe those senses and feelings without flatly stating them. Don’t say “I felt cold.” Say “I pulled the blanket tight around my shoulders in a useless attempt to trap my body heat.” 39 Stephen King describes it as making the reader “prickle (感到刺痛) with recognition.”
Create a thoughtful conclusion.
Your essay should end with your own reflection and analysis. 40 You have to describe how whatever happened shaped you. Just as a good lead hooks readers and draws them along for the ride, a good conclusion releases them from your essay’s hold with a sense of pleasure, agreement, passion or some other sense of completion.
A.Show, don’t tell.
B.Consider others’ senses.
C.The story is usually full of events.
D.Often, the story seems to have no real point.
E.The best essay topics are often deeply relatable.
F.It’s not enough to say “And that’s what happened.”
G.Your description should help the reader experience the cold with you.

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Tom was the boy who never got called on. In class, he pressed himself against the chair, hoping to be invisible. When the teacher asked a question, his eyes dropped to the desk. Reading was worse. Words on a page seemed to swim away from him. He would stare at a sentence for minutes, his throat tight. His classmates turned pages with ease. He got stuck on the first page, struggling with every word.
Mr. Kirui, the school principal, noticed. Instead of leaving him to sink, he did something small. After school one day, he found Tom sitting alone by the library window, running his fingers over the table. “Come with me,” he said quietly. “No pressure.”
The library smelled of old paper and dust. Sunlight streamed through the blinds. Mr. Kirui pulled out a pile of thin books — picture books, early readers, stories with big letters and white space. Tom’s face burned. “These are for little kids,” he mumbled, staring at his shoes. “Trust me,” Mr. Kirui said. “Start here.”
Tom opened the first one. His finger traced the lines. He read aloud, slowly, tripping over easy words. Mr. Kirui never corrected him. He just leaned back and listened. Day after day, after class they sat in the same corner — the one by the window where the light fell softly. Tom’s voice grew steadier. He started to ask questions about the stories. He borrowed books without being asked. One afternoon, Mr. Kirui watched him read a full page without stopping. The boy didn’t even notice the principal’s smile.
A week later, the school announced a Read Out Loud Competition, where students could choose their own reading materials. “Any volunteer?” The teacher asked. Hands shot up. Tom’s heart raced. His hand lifted slightly and then fell back to his lap.

Dear Josiah,
I am excessively sorry to say that I won’t be able to finish the reading report you assigned to us on time this Friday. Now, I am writing to extend my sincere apology and ask for permission of later submission.
I know I am supposed to finish my homework before the deadline, but unfortunately, I was caught in a heavy rain and had a high fever yesterday and I am still feeling dizzy right now. Therefore, I haven’t finished reading part yet, let alone the report. I hope it would be kind enough of you to allow me to hand in my work next Monday.
Sorry again for the inconvenience I’m about to cause and thanks for your understanding.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
67.One Possible Version
After class, Tom found Mr. Kirui in the library. Staring at his shoes, he expressed his wish to join, his throat tight. “But they’ll laugh at my thin book,” he whispered. Mr. Kirui patted his shoulder gently. “Just read it well. That’s enough.” Encouraged by the principal’s warm words, Tom finally signed up. Every afternoon, he returned to the sunlit corner, reading the same pages aloud repeatedly. With Mr. Kirui listening quietly nearby, Tom’s once shaky voice gradually grew firm, ready for the stage.
On competition day, Tom stepped onto the stage with a thin book. Facing the crowd, he swallowed hard. He began with a trembling whisper, but soon his voice steadied. Absorbed in the familiar story, Tom turned the pages with ease, the words no longer swimming away. Finishing the last sentence without a single pause, he met deafening applause. In the audience, Mr. Kirui nodded with a proud smile. Standing in the spotlight, Tom realized the once invisible boy had finally stepped out of the shadows, full of true confidence.

C.The Great Physicist Feynman’s Theory D.The Follow-up Effect of World War II
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

第二节(满分25分)

【答案】28.C 29.A 30.D 31.B
【导语】文章介绍印度阶梯井的作用、损毁现状及环保组织修复阶梯井的行动与难点。
【详解】28.细节理解题。根据第一段中“The complex, terraced (梯田状的) water storage was once the lifeblood of Indian communities — developed centuries ago to store and access water for drinking, agriculture and industry, and it also functioned as a local gathering spot.(这种复杂的梯田式储水设施曾是印度社群的命脉,数百年前建成,储存饮用水、工农业用水,同时也是当地民众聚集地。)”可知,古代阶梯井具备多种用途。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段中““Stepwell restoration is the next big challenge that I would like to add to EFI's responsibilities because we have a greater responsibility now for protecting the historical heritage, which is evidence of human intelligence,” Krishnamurthy says.(克里希纳穆尔蒂表示:“阶梯井修复是我希望为EFI新增的下一项重大挑战,如今我们肩负着更重的责任,要保护这份承载人类智慧的历史遗产。”)”可知,克里希纳穆尔蒂认为修复阶梯井既是一份责任,也是一大挑战。
30.推理判断题。根据第四段中 “EFI already draws on the stepwell design principles of its ancestors to guide its lake and pond restoration efforts. “They include the engineering, land use, understanding the water flows, the storage parameters (参数): How were the steps built? Where was the palm tree planted? How was the canal cut?” Krishnamurthy says, “So we take lessons from the past, and adapting them to the present-day challenges is what we are carrying out.”(印度环保基金会早已借鉴古人的阶梯井设计理念,指导湖泊与池塘的修复工作。克里希纳穆尔蒂提到:“这些理念涵盖工程设计、土地利用、水流规律认知、储水参数设定——比如台阶如何修建、棕榈树种在何处、运河如何开凿。我们从过去汲取经验,再将其适配当下的现实挑战,这正是我们正在推进的工作。”)”可知,本段意在展现古代阶梯井蕴含的水利智慧极具价值,如今仍能提供借鉴。
31.细节理解题。根据第五段中“Krishnamurthy says these stepwells will need public responsibility to safeguard their future.(克里希纳穆尔蒂表示,阶梯井的长远保护需要公众担起责任。)”可知,长久保护阶梯井离不开民众、社区参与。

C.The Great Physicist Feynman’s Theory D.The Follow-up Effect of World War II
【答案】32.D 33.A 34.B 35.B
【导语】文章由太平洋岛民模仿军队盼物资的故事引出“货物崇拜科学”,延伸到学生只做表面功夫的虚假学习,指出真正学习重在深度理解而非形式。
【详解】32.细节理解题。根据第一段“They believed that if they copied these actions, the cargo planes would return. But the planes never came.(他们相信,如果复制这些行动,货机就会返回。但飞机却从未归来。)”可知,岛民模仿士兵是希望货运飞机带回物资。
33.词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“forms of scientific investigation — such as using precise statistics, writing formatted papers, and conducting experiments — but lack the essential core of scientific integrity(科学探究的形式——例如使用精确的统计数据、撰写格式化的论文、进行实验——但却缺乏科学诚信这一核心要素。)”可知,rigorous修饰科学研究流程,搭配严谨的统计、规范论文,词义为严格的。故划线词意思是“严格的”。
34.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Simply making neat notes or doing many practice problems without deep thinking or learning from mistakes leads to little progress. They often feel productive, but the learning is shallow and quickly forgotten over time.(仅仅做整洁的笔记或大量练习题,却缺乏深入思考和从错误中学习的能力,导致进步甚微。他们常常觉得自己很高效,但学习效果浅薄,随着时间推移很快就会被遗忘。)”可知,长时间专注于华丽的笔记体现了“货物崇拜式学习”。
35.主旨大意题。根据第一段“In 1974, physicist Richard Feynman used this story to describe a problem in science, calling it “cargo cult science”.(1974年,物理学家理查德·费曼用这个故事来描述科学领域存在的一个问题,称之为“货物崇拜科学”。)”
【答案】36.E 37.D 38.A 39.G 40.F

【详解】36.根据本段小标题“Find an engaging topic.(找到吸引人的话题。)”以及空后的 “Although the story itself is unique to the author’s experience, there’s some universal truth that speaks to us from just below the surface.(虽然故事本身是作者独有的个人经历,但在表象之下存在着能打动所有人的普遍真理。)”
37.根据空前的“All it takes to understand the importance of an outline is listening to someone who struggled to tell a personal story.(想要理解大纲的重要性,只需听听那些讲述个人故事时磕磕绊绊、思路混乱的人。)”以及空后的“The switchbacks (转折) where the teller says “But wait, I have to tell you about this part, first!” are maddening and disturbing.(讲述者反复颠倒叙事顺序、穿插内容的混乱讲述方式,令人烦躁、干扰理解。)”
根据空后的“Don’t say “I felt cold.” Say “I pulled the blanket tight around my shoulders in a useless attempt to trap my body heat.”(不要直白地说“我感到很冷”,而要描写“我紧紧裹紧毯子,徒劳地想要留住身上的体温”。)”
39.根据空前的“Don’t say “I felt cold.” Say “I pulled the blanket tight around my shoulders in a useless attempt to trap my body heat.”(不要直白地说“我感到很冷”,而要描写“我紧紧裹紧毯子,徒劳地想要留住身上的体温”。)”以及空后的“Stephen King describes it as making the reader “prickle (感到刺痛) with recognition.”(斯蒂芬·金将这种写法形容为让读者产生深刻的共鸣与代入感。)”
40.根据空前的“Your essay should end with your own reflection and analysis.(你的文章结尾应当包含个人的反思和分析。)”以及空后的“You have to describe how whatever happened shaped you.(你必须阐述过往的经历如何塑造、改变了你。)”可知,本段讲解文章结尾的写作要求,强调结尾不能简单收尾,必须有深度思考和自我感悟。F选项“It’s not enough to say “And that’s what happened.” (仅仅简单陈述“事情就是这样”是远远不够的)” 否定了平淡、无思考的无效结尾方式,承接前文结尾需有反思的要求,自然引出后文结尾要升华主旨、感悟成长的内容,符合语境。

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
After class, Tom found Mr. Kirui in the library.

On competition day, Tom stepped onto the stage with a thin book.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One Possible Version
