① It takes sb some time to do sth 表示“某人花费多少时间做某事”。如：It took 10 hours to get to Nairobi from Mombasa by train.

② 过去分词短语作后置定语，表被动。如：the new railway built with China's help（中国帮助修建的新铁路）；an old railway line built in 1901（建于 1901 年的旧铁路线）。

③ 一般过去时描述过去某时发生的动作，常与 before then, in 1901 等连用。如：It took 10 hours to get to Nairobi ...

④ 现在完成时强调对现在造成的影响或结果，常与 already, since 2017, over the last few years 连用。如：has already cut the travel time ...

⑤ benefit 既可作动词也可作名词：benefit from（从……中受益）；be of benefit to（对……有益）。

⑥ as a result 意为“结果；因此”，后接结果；as a result of 意为“由于”，后接原因。

⑦ with ease 意为“轻而易举地”，相当于 easily。如：make business deals with ease。

⑧ although 引导让步状语从句，意为“虽然”，不能与 but 连用。如：Although China and Kenya are far away from each other, the railway shows how different countries can work together to build a better world.

In 2017, the new 480-kilometre Mombasa-Nairobi railway was opened. Before then, the only transport links between Mombasa, Kenya's main port, and Nairobi, Kenya's capital, were rough roads and an old railway line built in 1901. The old trains were very slow. It took 10 hours to get to Nairobi from Mombasa by train.

However, the new railway, built with China's help, has already cut the travel time between Mombasa and Nairobi to about four hours for passengers. Now, more than two million people use it every year.

Local Kenyans have benefited a lot from the new railway. A government worker said, “I'm very happy with the new railway built by our Chinese friends. Many changes have taken place in the town over the last few years, and the people who live here have become rich.” A businessman said, “My experience of using the train since 2017 has
