Mary Anning was an English fossil collector, dealer and paleontologist(古生物学家). Her fossil-hunting helped change the way people thought about the world.
Mary was born into a poor family in England on May 21, 1799. She lived in the seaside town of Lyme Regis, in Dorset. The family had nine children. Only Mary and her brother Joseph grew up. Mary’s father took his children along the beach. They picked up shells and stones to sell to visitors. Mary did not go to school much. Her family was too poor. And schools did not teach children about fossils. Mary could read and write. She taught herself. She learned about rocks and how bodies are made.
In 1811 when Mary and Joseph were fossil hunting, Joseph saw a bone sticking out of the rock. Mary had a hammer to chip away at the rock. Very carefully she uncovered it. She found the first complete fossil of the ichthyosaur(鱼龙).
Since then, Mary became crazy about fossil hunting. She liked to hunt on the beach after a storm. The wind, rain and waves made the rocks crumble It was easy to spot fossils. Most days Mary went fossil hunting with her dog, Tray.
Rich friends helped Mary by selling fossils for her. They sent her money. Scientists wrote letters and came to see her. One good friend was William Buckland, a professor at Oxford University. Mary also opened a shop to sell fossils, stones and shells. She chatted with visitors.

In Baiyin, a city in Northwest China’s Gansu Province, cool night winds carry the smell of herbs (药草) like astragalus and angelica. Under bright lights, people gather around cupping stations and pulse-reading houses. This lively scene is at the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Night Market in Wansheng Park. Here, TCM wisdom—with a history of thousands of years—has become a popular evening activity for Generation Z (those born from the mid-1990s to the early 2010s).
Yu Huiyan, a 21-year-old, said the hot weather made her tired and sleepy. She came to the night market for herbal help because TCM had worked well for her before. After checking her tongue and pulse, a doctor found she had a weak pulse and felt tired. The doctor then gave her a mix of TCM herbs to increase her energy, reduce dampness in her body and keep her body in a good state. Yu and many of her friends have grown interested in TCM in recent years. She even learned TCM in college and now wants to use TCM to care for herself and others.
At the night market, young people love TCM treatments like acupuncture (针灸), cupping, foot baths, and ear seeds. Since early July, over 30 local medical groups have sent staff here to give free health checks, answer questions and offer personal advice. Zhu Dongmei, the organizer, says over 2,000 people visit daily, mostly young people waiting for pulse checks, herbal packages or tea.
Similar TCM night markets can be found across China. In Shenyang, there are TCM cultural product zones and fun activities. In Nanchang, robots do moxibustion (艾灸) and 3D foot scans. Da Chunhe, a local health official, says, “TCM is a national treasure. As more young people learn about it, they will benefit from it.”
28.Why did Yu Huiyan come to the TCM Night Market?
A.To learn TCM theories. B.To buy some equipment.
C.To work as a TCM volunteer. D.To get herbal help for her tiredness.

B.There are different TCM night markets in China.
C.Yu Huiyan was first introduced to TCM in China.
D.TCM night markets are popular with young Chinese.

Scientists have created a noninvasive (不开刀的) AI system focused on changing a person's brain activity into written text. This system, called a semantic decoder, can help patients who lose the ability to talk or communicate physically after having a stroke, paralysis or other illnesses.
Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin developed the system in part by using a transformer model, which is similar to the technology that powers the chatbot, ChatGPT.
The participants (people taking part in the study) trained the decoder by listening to several hours of podcasts within an FMRI scanner, which is a large machine that checks brain activity. The system does not need any surgery to put devices (仪器) into the body. After the AI system is trained, it can produce a piece of text when the participant is listening to or imagines telling a new story. The text is not a word-for-word copy. Instead, researchers designed it to catch the general thoughts or ideas of the participant.
About half the time, the trained system produces text that is close to or exactly matches the real meaning of what the participant wanted to say. For example, when a participant heard the words “I don't have my driver's license yet” during an experiment, the thoughts were turned into, She has not even started to learn to drive yet.
“For a noninvasive method, this is a big step forward. Before, we could only get single words or short sentences, ” Alexander Huth, one of the leaders of the study, said. “We're getting the model to translate long, continuous language with complex (复杂的) ideas. ” The participants also watched four videos without sound while in the scanner, and the AI system could correctly describe some events from them.
At present, the decoder can only be used in labs because it depends on the scanner. But researchers believe it could one day be used with smaller, more portable brain-imaging systems.
32.What is the main purpose of the semantic decoder?
A.To teach patients to send texts. B.To help patients who cannot speak.
C.To check patients' brain activity. D.To treat patients with brain diseases.
33.How does the author show the difference between the produced text and the participant's thought?
A.By giving a typical example. B.By presenting research backgrounds.
C.By citing experts' opinions. D.By providing scientific explanations.
34.What is researchers' attitude to the AI system in the future?
A.Doubtful. B.Optimistic. C.Concerned. D.Uncaring.
35.What is the best title of the text?
A.ChatGPT-like Tech: Powering New Brain-reading AI System.
B.Semantic Decoder: Helping Patients Recover Ability to Speak.
C.Noninvasive AI Decoder: Translating Brain Activity into Text.
D.FMRI Scanner: Monitoring Human Brains to Read Thoughts.

There is an English saying: 36 Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. 37
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach and even the feet. 38
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. 39
40 In this way, they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.
A.Laughter can prolong one’s life.
B.Laughter is the best medicine.
C.If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.
D.They’ve found that laughter really improves people’s health.
E.Despite the benefits, doctors still cannot put this theory into practice.

67. 阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Growing up with ADHD (注意缺陷多动障碍), I struggled all the time to concentrate. If a subject didn’t grab my interest, my brain simply shut down. The frustration of not being able to absorb information made school extremely difficult.
By high school, I had fallen so far behind that attending class seemed pointless. My grades were always at the bottom and publicly posted for all to see, which fueled my shame and anxiety. Eventually, I began skipping classes. No one seemed to care about my potential, and I certainly didn’t see it myself.
Everything began to change when my teacher. Ms. Carter, found me hiding in an empty classroom, writing down my struggles and making drawings in a notebook one day. Ms. Carter watched me quietly for a while before gently saying, “You know, you have a real talent in writing. Why not try writing for the school newspaper?” I had never considered writing for others to see. Hesitantly, I agreed to give it a try. At first. I contributed small pieces, but over time, I took on more responsibility and became an editor.
One day, after a particularly well-received edition, Ms. Carter smiled and said, “You’ve come so far - I’m proud of you.” At her words, I felt my self-confidence rise to new heights. For the first time, I saw myself as bright and smart.
As my confidence grew, so did my expectations about the future. Ms. Carter encouraged me to consider college. All I needed to do was prepare a personal statement that showed my strengths, goals, and why I was a good fit for the college. Despite the push forward, there was still a cloud of uncertainty in the back of my mind. I expressed my thanks to Ms. Carter but said I would think about it.
注意:
1.续写短文的词数为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When college applications opened, I hesitated.

29.What can people get from the TCM Night Market in Wansheng Park?
A.Paid TCM treatments. B.Robotic moxibustion services.
C.Free service from local medical staff. D.Various kinds of TCM textbooks.
30.What is Da Chunhe’s attitude towards the development of TCM?
A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Unconcerned. D.Negative.
31.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.TCM night markets develop fast in the world.

B.Laughter is the best medicine.
C.If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.
D.They’ve found that laughter really improves people’s health.

M: Marie Curie loved to study and hoped to become a scientist from her early childhood. Her interest in science was encouraged by her father, who was a teacher of physics.
In 1891, she left Poland and entered the University of Paris. Four years later, she graduated with the highest grade in her class. Then, she remained in the same university doing scientific research work. In order to discover something that gave off a kind of radiation, she did some experiments carefully again and again. Finally in 1902 she and her husband succeeded in finding the radioactive element — radium. Their achievement won them the Nobel Prize for physics in 1903.
In 1911, she won another Nobel Prize, all by herself in chemistry. Thus she became the first female scientist to win two Nobel Prizes.

Mary Anning died inl847. How evolution(进化)works was explained by Charles Darwin not long after Mary died. Her fossils had helped scientists understand how things began.
24.Why did Mary’s father take his children along the beach?
A.To enjoy life. B.To make a living.
C.To look for fossils. D.To teach them about fossils.
25.What can we learn about Mary?
A.Her father was a paleontologist. B.Her father educated her at home.
C.She had nine brothers and sisters in all. D.She might be popular at that time.
26.Who was the first one to catch sight of the rock containing the first complete ichthyosaur fossil?
A.Charles Darwin. B.Mary’s dog. C.Mary. D.Joseph.
27.What does the underlined word "crumble" in the fourth paragraph means ?
A.break B.shake C.float D.dive
【答案】24.B 25.D 26.D 27.A
【分析】这是一篇人物传记。短文叙述了英国化石收藏家、商人和古生物学家玛丽·安宁的故事。
24.推理判断题。由第二段“Mary was born into a poor family in England on May 21, 1799. Only Mary and her brother Joseph grew up. Mary’s father took his children along the beach. They picked up shells and stones to sell to visitors.”
由倒数第二段“ Scientists wrote letters and came to see her. Mary also opened a shop to sell fossils, stones and shells. She chatted with visitors”可知,科学家写信要来拜访她。玛丽还开了一家商店出售化石、石头和贝壳且与到访的游客聊一些关于化石的信息。所以通过关键词“ Scientists wrote letters and came to see her ,She chatted with visitors”可以判断出,在那个时候她很有名,很受欢迎。故选D项。
26.细节理解题。由第三段“in 1811 when Mary and Joseph were fossil hunting, Joseph saw a bone sticking out of the rock.”可知,1811年,当玛丽和约瑟夫在寻找化石时,约瑟夫看到一根骨头从岩石中伸出来了。所以约瑟夫是第一个看到含有第一个完整鱼龙化石的人。故选D项。
27.词句猜测题。由第四段“She liked to hunt on the beach after a storm. The wind, rain and waves made the rocks crumble. It was easy to spot fossils.可知,暴风雨过后她喜欢在海滩上寻找化石。风、雨、浪使岩石变得碎裂,很容易发现化石。所以通过上下文语境可以判断出第四段加下划线的“crumble”是break“破裂”的意思。故选A项。

F.That’s because laughter produces chemicals which reduce stress and pain.
G.As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the US now hold laughter clinics.

When college applications opened, I hesitated. The thought of applying seemed daunting, given my past struggles and the low expectations I had always held for myself. However, I remembered Ms. Carter’s words of encouragement and the sense of accomplishment I had felt as an editor for the school newspaper. Taking a deep breath, I decided to face my fears and submit my application, hoping that my passion for writing and the growth I had experienced would shine through. Finally, my application was approved.
I called Ms. Carter as soon as I got the good news. My voice trembled with excitement as I shared the news of my acceptance letter. Ms. Carter’s joy was palpable through the phone line; she congratulated me warmly and reminded me of how proud she was of my progress. I realized that with the right support and encouragement, I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Ms. Carter had been my guiding light, and I couldn’t wait to embark on this new chapter of my life, ready to face the challenges and opportunities that awaited me.
