【答案】Dear Jack,
I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble with English reading. Here are some suggestions for you.
First, read short passages every day, such as news reports or stories, and try to guess the meaning of new words from the context instead of looking them up at once. Second, keep a vocabulary notebook and review it regularly, which will help you read faster and more accurately. Besides, don’t lose heart. Reading ability improves gradually with practice. I believe you will make progress soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

We get to the zoo at about eleven o’clock. Later on, we’re going on a special tour with a zoo guide, so everyone needs to be at the entrance at twelve thirty for the start of that. The guide will then take us to the zoo’s information center before taking us to the insect house. B
I’ve worked in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer since I graduated from high school. But making the transition between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be uncivilized (不合理的), getting to a factory by 6 o’clock each morning is torture. My friends never seem to understand why I’m so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.
There are few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real world. People of my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine. I ran in the plant, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.
The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear overnight. Issues like downsizing and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.
After working 12-hour shifts in a factory, the other options have become only too clear. When I’m back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seems too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale (老掉牙的) now ring true.
These lessons I’m learning, however precious, are always tinged (带有) with a sense of guilt (内疚). Many people pass their lives in the places I briefly work, spending 30 years where I spend only two months at a time. “This job pays well, but it’s hell on the body,” said one co-worker. “Study hard and keep reading,” she added.
My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.
26.How did the author look back on his summer days while at college?
A.They brought him nothing but torture.
B.They were no holiday for him at all.
C.They were a relief from his hard work at school.
D.They offered him a chance to know more people.
27.Which of the following is closest to the underlined word “torture” in the first paragraph?
A.Pain. B.Fortune. C.Anxiety. D.Peace.
28.What does the author say about college students?
A.They expect too much from the real world.
B.They have little interest in blue-collar life.
C.They think too highly of themselves.
D.They are confident about their future.
29.What, according to the author, is most worrying for blue-collar workers?
A.They do not get good pay.
B.They do not have job security.
C.They have to work 12-hour shifts.
D.They have to move from place to place.
30.In what important way has the author’s work experience changed him?
A.He learned to be more practical.
B.He acquired a sense of responsibility.
C.He came to respect blue-collar workers.
D.He came to value his college education.
【答案】26.B 27.A 28.C 29.B 30.D
【导语】文章讲述了作者大学期间每年暑假都在工厂打工,这段辛苦的蓝领经历让他深知工作不易,彻底转变了对教育价值的认知,决心充分利用大学时光。
【详解】26.细节理解题。根据第一段最后一句“My friends never seem to understand why I’m so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.(我的朋友们似乎永远不明白,为什么我一回到学校就如此松了一口气,或者为什么我的暑假根本算不上什么假期)”可知,作者暑假一直打工,他认为暑假对他来说完全不是在度假。
27.词义猜测题。根据第一段“But making the transition between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be uncivilized (不合社会规范的)...(但假期期间从学校过渡到全职蓝领工作,始终不容易。像我这样的学生,认为任何中午前的课都不合理……)”可知,作者提到自己是一个认为中午之前上课都不合常规的学生,因此每天早上6点就要赶到工厂上班对他来说必然是一种“折磨”或“痛苦”。torture意为“折磨,痛苦”,与选项A意思最接近。

First, we should have good eating habits. We need to eat more fruit and vegetables. 31 Instead, we should eat less fast food and drink fewer sugary drinks. Eating well gives our body the energy it needs.
Second, getting enough sleep is also necessary. 32 When we sleep, our body rests and repairs itself. Teenagers should sleep for about eight to nine hours every night.
Third, we should do exercise regularly. 33 We can go running, play basketball or swim. Doing sports makes us stronger and helps us stay in a good mood.
Fourth, it’s important to drink enough water every day. 34 Doctors suggest we drink about eight glasses of water a day. Water keeps our body working well.
Finally, we should keep a positive attitude. 35 When we face problems, we should try to stay calm and find ways to solve them. A happy mind is good for our health.

I work as a language teacher at a German school in Japan. My favorite class has ten nine-year-old students from 54 (differ) backgrounds who need extra lessons in German. Some of them hadn’t read a complete book in their life and most of them didn’t like to read. So, I 55 (decide) to make reading something special. I asked our librarian 56 we could use the attached sitting room. I then designed a reading notebook 57 had a cover page with room for eight fancy stamps (one stamp for each completed book) and eight pages where the pupils had to fill in all relevant information about the book they were going to read. I bought little 58 (prize): one chocolate after four stamps and one surprise after eight stamps.
In September they 59 (fight) over the sofa and discussing their holidays in Japanese rather than reading. Now they ask me, “Can I go and choose another book?” Or they say, “Friday is my favourite day.” And it’s 60 (I) too.

A.They brought him nothing but torture.
B.They were no holiday for him at all.
