Late at night, most shops in the city are closed. But in Wenjiang District of Chengdu, there is still a warm light shining from a bookstore. People sit quietly inside, reading books and enjoying their own peaceful time. This special place is called the Liudeng Bookstore.
On 25 April 2026, the CCTV programme (节目) Focus Report covered this special bookstore. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. During the day, people can read quietly there. Some students go there after school, while office workers may stop by after work. At night, the lights shine just as brightly. The door stays open, and people can still stay there to read. It allows people to read anytime they want.
Besides reading, there are many fun activities. The bookstore often holds colourful activities, such as reading salons, cultural talks, and parent-child reading time. They make reading more fun and bring people together.
From reading alone to reading together, the area is making reading a bigger part of daily life. An official (官员) said, “We want to build a ‘city of readers’. In Wenjiang District, there are 28 such bookstores. They help bring the joy of reading to every community (社区).”

Rice is very important in China. Many Chinese people eat rice every day. Thanks to science, China now has new kinds of rice.
Li Li was once a student of Yuan Longping, a famous Chinese rice scientist. She and her team worked in the fields for more than 20 years. Even in hot summers, they did a lot of experiments (实验). Finally, they made the new kinds of rice.
One is called Xizi 3. It is the first low-cadmium rice variety (低镉水稻品种) in China. We can find cadmium in some soil (土壤), and rice plants can take it in as they grow. Eating such rice over time can damage people’s health. But Xizi 3 takes in very little cadmium, so it is safe to eat.
Another one is the third-generation hybrid rice (第三代杂交水稻). It gives farmers more rice, grows faster, and is cheaper (更便宜的) to grow. Yuan Longping once worked on it. After he passed away in 2021, scientists like Li Li kept working. They finally succeeded and encouraged many farmers to grow it.
These new kinds of rice show that China is strong in farming science. People in China can eat safer and better rice. ▲ Chinese scientists also help other countries, especially those in Africa and Southeast Asia. They teach farmers there how to grow the new rice and encourage people there to study rice science.
In the future, we believe more new kinds of good rice will come out. With better rice science, fewer people will go hungry, and people from different countries will become much closer.
