Do you ever let an AI tool finish your homework in one minute? It feels efficient, and many classmates now do the same after a long day at school.
New studies, however, suggest that this shortcut may be more ____38____ than it first appears. A nationwide survey by the China Youth and Children Research Center found that more than 60 percent of primary and secondary students have used AI. Nearly one in five use it regularly. Among them, about 71 percent said they turn to AI for ideas or for schoolwork. That sounds like a smart shortcut at first.
Speed, though, is not the same as understanding. Researchers wanted to know what happens to students' thinking. Once the screen goes dark, they must work ____39____. An OECD report in 2026 offered an uncomfortable result. Students who practised maths with AI looked strong on practice questions. They even finished those questions faster than the other group. On closed-book tests, they fell 17 percent behind classmates who had practised without it. The practice score, in other words, had ____40____ them.
Why does this gap appear? When an answer arrives in seconds, the hard part of the task disappears. The hard part is exactly what trains the brain. Without that effort, a skill is not lost. It is simply never given a chance to make any real ____41____. Teachers see the same problem in writing class. A student can hand in a clean essay in five minutes. The sentences look fine on the page. The homework mark may be high, ____42____ the writer cannot explain the ideas the next day. A professor writing in China Daily made the same point.
If every difficult step is handed to a machine, students may leave school with fluent sentences. Those sentences can impress a reader at first sight. They still cannot hide a lack of real ____43____. Thinking needs time, and time is what AI takes away. Some teenagers also tell AI about their worries. The tool replies at once and never laughs at them. That can feel safe at midnight. Teachers still say a machine cannot ____44____ a talk with someone who knows the student's real life. Parents and friends ask follow-up questions. A chatbot usually does not.
There is a further problem. AI often writes in polished English, so the whole text can look ____45____, even with a mistake. Students who do not check the facts may accept a wrong idea just because it reads well. The English is clean, but the facts may not be. Chinese education officials now ask schools to guide AI use by age. Middle school students may study AI-generated text, but they should not hand it in as their own. The aim is not to ban the tool. It is to make sure students still ____46____ the difficult parts themselves.
A safer habit, experts say, is to treat AI as a tutor. Let it explain one step. Then shut the page and try the next problem without it. Only that second step shows whether the idea has been ____47____ understood. Used in this way, AI can still help. Used as a ghostwriter, it cannot build the thinking you will need when no screen is allowed.

根据前文“excited but still worried about the final results”可知,因为担心比分被反超,家长们在最后几分钟里“继续”为孩子们加油打气,应选用continued表示“继续”。
根据前文提到比赛仅剩几分钟“several minutes left”以及后文“near the end of the game”可知,此处指终场前进入最后读秒阶段,应选用seconds表示“秒”。
根据转折连词“But”以及后文“For a moment, nobody spoke.”

Mikey!”
giving up“放弃”,depending on“依靠”,worrying about“担忧”,均不符合共同庆祝进球的感人场面。
in addition“此外”,instead of“代替”,so as to“为了”,均不符合表达因果关系的语境。

Class 9D began a Community Volunteer Day project last month. Each student was required to spend one morning helping in the neighbourhood and then reflect on how the experience had shaped them. Lucy chose a community centre for the elderly, assuming that her duty was simply to ____38____ tea and chat with the old people there.
One morning at the centre, however, completely changed her assumption. The centre was warm and ____39____, yet beneath its peaceful surface, every elderly person carried a different story and a different need. Some needed help reading letters from distant children; others, sitting quietly in the corner, clearly longed for someone’s company when they felt lonely. Mrs Chen, the centre manager, told Lucy that many old people secretly feared becoming ____40____ to their families — the very families they had once raised and protected.
“They do not always need big gifts,” Mrs Chen explained gently. “Sometimes what they need most is someone who can simply listen to them — without judging, without rushing.” During the morning, Lucy noticed how Mrs Chen treated every elderly person with great respect. She never hurried anyone. She spoke slowly, waited with remarkable ____41____ when silence filled the room, and always asked for permission before offering help.
Lucy began to realize that caring for others was far more than a kind intention. It demanded professional ____42____, careful judgement and a genuinely warm heart. She also reflected that teenage life could ____43____ stress, and no one should laugh at another person’s ____44____, no matter how small it seemed. Some jobs may never be noticed in a busy classroom,____45____ they quietly support people’s lives in the most important ways.
After the visit, Lucy rewrote the title of her report, changing it from “A Morning with Old People” to “A Job That Makes People Feel ____46____.” In her report, she wrote that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, and that helping others is a brave step towards becoming ____47____. The project taught her to see and respect the quiet heroes who work behind the scenes.

Have you ever wondered what happens inside your brain while you sleep? Every night, you experience ____35____ sleep cycles made up of light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep — the dreaming stage. Of these stages, deep sleep ____36____ most, as brain waves slow to their lowest level, activating (激活) the brain’s waste-clearing glymphatic system (胶质淋巴系统).
Brain cells use energy to support thinking, learning, and studying. As a result, they produce harmful waste products that need to be removed. The glymphatic system flushes this ____37____ out with brain fluid (脑脊液), just like a built-in dishwasher. Danish scientist Maiken Nedergaard and her team uncovered what ____38____ this cleaning process.
Their research showed that a chemical called norepinephrine (NE) plays a central role in this process. In deep sleep, the brainstem releases small bursts of NE every 50 seconds. This makes tiny brain blood vessels shrink (收缩) and expand (扩张) repeatedly. As the volume of blood shifts back and forth, it forces brain fluid to circulate (循环), ____39____ mini pumps to sweep waste away. When you get enough high-quality sleep, norepinephrine (去甲肾上腺素) cleans your brain ____40____. Yet lack of sleep stops this nightly clean-up, letting toxic waste increase.
To support this essential brain maintenance, you need enough deep sleep. ____41____ a fixed bedtime to regulate your body clock, avoid screens one hour before bed, and read to calm your mind. These simple ____42____ keep your mind clear daily and protect long-term brain health. So, give your brain the rest it needs and allow it to refresh itself overnight.

looking like“看起来像”仅指外观,dealing with“处理”;depending on“依赖”逻辑不通。

The phrase “Love you, laoji” has been popular on social media. It is not about being self-centered. It means ____38____ yourself when you feel stressed—buying yourself a small gift, or simply saying, “I’ve done my best.”
Sometimes, being ____39____ yourself especially when you are young may be against tradition. You may be allowed to show being satisfied with yourself only after you have succeeded, but the “love you, laoji” does not follow the ____40____. Even when you fail or feel lost, you can still accept who you are.
This idea carries a powerful ____41____: recognising your value even when you don’t perform well. ____42____, although you don’t get a high mark, you can write down several good things such as “I finish my daily homework on time. It is a good habit I have developed.”

Tell yourself: “Being myself is the best choice.” You can protect your own ____46____.

后文“You may be allowed to show being satisfied with yourself only after you have succeeded”说明传统要求对自己严格,因此“对自己友善”才与 tradition 相悖,应用kind to。strict with意为“对……严格”,worried about意为“担心”,surprised at意为“对……
For example。In other words意为“换句话说”,On the other hand意为“另一方面”,What’s more意为“而且”,均不能引出具体例子。
后文“Seeing their achievements, looks or lifestyles online can make you feel you are never ‘enough’”说明是“比较”导致的问题,应用compare。
后文“When you feel uncomfortable, learning to take care of yourself is important”说明自爱很“重要”,应用matters(重要)。

Kelly and her friends were walking home from school. They really missed their friend Holly, who just had surgery (外科手术) and needed to stay home for the next two weeks!
“When my little sister was in the hospital, people brought many gifts to ____40____ her up,” said Maya. “We should bring gifts to Holly too!” Everyone liked the idea. Bella wanted to give her a necklace-making kit. Maya planned to buy a paint set and Alice decided to bring a Barbie doll.
When they asked about Kelly’s gift, she was deep in ____41____. Kelly wanted to give her friend something meaningful, but most of her pocket money for the month was spent on the movies and snacks so there was not much left. Feeling ____42____ now, she still didn’t want to ask her parents for more money.
Over dinner, Kelly told her mom about Holly. “We want to give her gifts to let her know we’ve been thinking about her.” Kelly listed what each of her friends was giving Holly. “I want to give her something special too,” Kelly continued. “How can I do that without a lot of money?”
“I know you can do it. You’re ____43____,” said Mom. “Just think about what makes Holly smile.”
Later that night, while racking (冥思苦想) her brains about the gift, a ____44____ came to her. Last year, when she was having a terrible day, Holly gave her a small bag filled with little surprises, which made her feel much better. “That’s it,” Kelly thought. “I can do the same for her!” Over the next few days, Kelly ____45____ on her gift, choosing and even hand-making the items that would make Holly smile.
On Friday, Holly’s friends went to visit her. Watching Holly open the others’ presents, Kelly’s heart beat faster. She had thought her idea was a good one, but now she wasn’t sure.
Finally, Holly ____46____ for Kelly’s box and grinned (咧嘴笑) at the words on it: Stuff to Make You Smile. She opened the lid and began unwrapping. “Stickers! A headband! A rubber-band bracelet you made in my favorite purple! Wow! Did you draw this picture for me too?”
Kelly nodded. “It’s us playing badminton last month.”
“I can’t wait till we can do that again,” said Holly as she reached into the box once more. “And homemade chocolate cookies?! Yum!”
Soon they had to leave so Holly could rest. “Thank you guys. I feel better already!” Holly smiled.
Kelly was glad too, because she had worried for nothing! Her mom had been right—friendship and ____47____ were what really counted.

根据“Kelly wanted to give her friend something meaningful, but most of her pocket money for the month was spent on the movies and snacks so there was not much left.”

根据前文的“most of her pocket money for the month was spent on the movies and snacks”可知,她把钱花在了电影和零食上导致现在没钱买礼物,所以对之前的花销感到后悔,regretful“后悔的”符合语境。
