Do you like listening to music when you’re studying? A lot of students think that listening to their favorite songs helps them study better, especially when they are revising. But does it really make them learn more? And will it be different if they choose different kinds of music?
How to research
To answer these questions, teachers from Cardiff Metropolitan University recently ran a study. They divided students into different groups:
·Group A: revised in silence;
·Group B: revised with music without words;
·Group C: revised with music with words they liked;
·Group D: revised with music with words they disliked.
The students then took a test on the passages they had been revising.

Learning a new language can sometimes make you feel slow and bored.There always seems to be so much to remember.However,an American writer once said,“What we learn with pleasure,we never forget."So,why not make learning more enjoyable?What could be more fun than watching sitcoms(情景喜剧)?
Watching sitcoms is a great way to learn everyday English.Instead of boring textbook sentences,you hear how people really speak.Characters talk using feelings,jokes,and slang,which makes English come alive.
Another advantage is learning a language you won't find in textbooks.For example,Joey from Friends often says,“How you doin'?”while Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory always says“Bazinga!”after telling a joke.These phrases are short,easy to remember,and can be fun to use when you talk with native speakers.
This doesn't mean it's an easy method.For beginners,it can feel difficult.The characters might speak too fast to understand.But as a language expert suggests,the secret is to watch actively.
First,watch a scene with subtitles(字幕)in your language.Then,watch it again with English subtitles.Next,try without subtitles to see how much you understand.What's more,she suggests starting with just five to ten minutes' short scenes then rewatching them and keeping a list of useful phrases you can use in real life.So next time you watch your favourite English-language show,you might be surprised by how much you can learn!
Watching sitcoms is an enjoyable and useful way to learn English.As long as you follow the right steps,you can make progress while having fun.
