Two schools, 8,000 kilometres apart (相隔), have become good “net friends”. One is Sunny Side Middle School in London, England. The other is our school, a middle school in Zhouzhuang, Jiangsu.
The pen friend programme (笔友项目) started two years ago. At first, only ten students from each school took part. They wrote emails once a month and talked about their school lives, their hobbies and their dreams. This term, the programme has grown: more than one hundred students now have pen friends, and they write every two weeks.
Amy is a Year 8 student in London. Her pen friend is Li Xing from our class. In her latest email, Amy wrote about the weather. “It rains a lot here. We often talk about the weather because it changes all the time,” she wrote. Li Xing replied with photos of the water town, the stone bridges and the little boats. Amy said the town looked like a painting.
The two schools also meet online once a term. Last month, the students had a video party. The English students tried to say some Chinese words, and our students taught them a Jiangnan folk song. Everyone laughed, but nobody gave up.
Why do the teachers start such a programme? “A friend in another country helps you see the world through different eyes,” says Ms Wang, our English teacher. “When Amy writes about the rain in London, and Li Xing writes about the moon over the river, they are learning geography, culture and language at the same time.”

Passage 2 【Unit 1 · Friendship】
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容完成表格,每空一词。(词数:约305,建议用时9分钟)
The Jiangsu City Football League (苏超) was the biggest sports story of 2025 and 2026. Millions of people watched the matches, but for Chen Yu, a ball girl (球童) from Suzhou, the best part was not the game. It was the friend she made.
Chen Yu is fourteen. Last summer, she worked as a ball girl at a match between Suzhou and Nantong. Her job was simple: pick up the ball quickly and give it back to the players. Before the match, she was so nervous that her hands were cold.
Next to her stood a ball boy from Nantong. His name was Wang Hao, and he was also fourteen. “Are you nervous too?” he asked. “A little,” Chen Yu answered. They talked quietly while the players warmed up. Wang Hao told her that he had watched every Suzhou match on TV, because his uncle lived in Suzhou.
During the match, a player ran past them and nearly knocked Wang Hao over. Chen Yu pulled his arm and he did not fall. After the match, the two exchanged phone numbers. They found that they liked the same player, the same football shirts and even the same kind of milk tea.
Now they chat online every week. They are on opposite sides when the two cities meet on the pitch (球场), but off the pitch they are true friends. “Football brings cities together, and it brought us together,” Chen Yu says. “A good competitor (对手) makes you stronger; a good friend makes you happier.”
This season, both of them hope to work as ball kids again — on the same side of the pitch this time.

Passage 3 【Unit 1 · Friendship】
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在表格的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。每空一词。(词数:约318,建议用时9分钟)
Last term, our school bought a small robot called Xiao You for the library. It can talk, tell stories and play chess. Many students love it. Some even say, “Xiao You is my best friend!”
Can a robot really be a friend? Our class had a big discussion about this question, and the two sides had different ideas.
Li Mei thinks robots can be good friends. “Xiao You never gets angry. When I fail an exam, it says kind words to me. When I am bored, it tells funny stories. It remembers what I said last week. Sometimes I feel it understands me better than people do,” she says.
Zhang Feng does not agree. “A friend is not a machine that always says yes,” he says. “My best friend Dong Dong tells me when I am wrong. Last term I played computer games for too long, and he stopped me. A robot will never do that, because its job is to make you happy, not to help you grow.”
Ms Qin, our head teacher, listened carefully. “Both sides are right in some ways,” she said. “A robot can keep you company (陪伴), but friendship needs something more. Real friends choose to stay with you when it is not easy. They share not only happiness but also hard times. A machine cannot choose — it can only follow its programme.”
At the end of the discussion, we took a vote (投票). Twenty-one students thought a robot could be a friend; nineteen thought it could not; six students were not sure. What is your answer? Maybe the question is not “can a robot be a friend?”, but “what makes a friend a real friend?”
Can a 1 be a friend? | |
What Xiao You can do | It can talk, tell stories and play 2 in the library. |
Li Mei's idea | The robot never gets 3 ; it says kind words, tells funny stories and remembers what she said. |
Zhang Feng's idea | A friend is not a machine that always says 4 . His best friend 5 him when he played games too long. |
Ms Qin's idea | A robot can keep you 6 , but real friends stay with you when it is not easy and share hard 7 too. |
A machine cannot 8 — it only follows its programme. | |
The vote | 21 for, 19 against and 6 9 . |
The real question | “What makes a friend a 10 friend?” |
