Thanks to a high school robotics team, a tiny dog named Kanga-Roo who lost her front two legs at birth is walking on her own.
The tiny dog, called “Roo” for short, first made news when she was dropped off at the Heart of Louisiana Humane Society in late 2023. Without her front legs, she had to adapt(适应) to jumping on her back legs for moving around. So the Steel Eagles Robotics Team at Holy Savior Menard Central High School in Louisiana put their minds to work and began building a special type of wheelchair that gives Roo two wheels in place of her front legs. For the students, seeing their design work in real life was an exciting experience.
The team fitted Roo with her first wheelchair in October 2023 using a 3D printer. The dog ran into trouble while learning how to walk in the new setup, but she has adapted well. She has already outgrown her first wheelchair and is working on her second. The team will keep building new sizes until Roo is fully grown.
The students and the Humane Society members have been working to teach Roo how to use her wheelchair. While she hasn’t mastered it yet, she is getting close. “She was scared at first but she’s getting more comfortable in it and it has become a lot easier for her to move freely,” the organization’s president, Kristy Royall, said. “It’s wonderful to see technology used in such a caring way,” she added.
Kanga-Roo’s wheelchair is one of many projects the Steel Eagles Robotics Team has built for people or animals in need. According to coach Tonya Shepard, it is their goal to contribute to (做贡献) the community and do things that are actually helpful to the community.
24. What did the robotics team do for the dog Roo?
A. They built a comfortable shelter for her.
B. They taught her how to jump with back legs.
C. They designed a movable wheelchair for her.
D. They provided medical treatment for her legs.

C. It is under-recognized. D. It is experimental.
27. Why does the robotics team undertake projects like Roo’s wheelchair?
A. To win robotics competitions. B. To gain experience in animal care.
C. To improve their 3D printing skills. D. To give back to their community.

Heman Bekele has been named TIME’s Kid of the Year for 2024. The 15-year-old has come up with an idea for a soap that could help treat skin cancer, and he is already working with scientists to test his idea.
Heman’s family came to the US from Ethiopia when he was-four. Heman remembers seeing people there working outside in the sun without proper sun protection, which may well increase the risk of skin cancer. From his parents’, he had a deeper understanding of its dangers. Skin cancer can often be cured, but the treatment is extremely expensive for those poor workers.
Heman’s natural curiosity led him to experiment with different materials and at the age of 7, he nearly caused a fire with a chemistry set. As he got older, he began to wonder if his curiosity could actually help make a difference. Upon reading about imiquimod, a medicine that can help fight skin cancer in the early stages, he realized it was a good way to make the medicine work through a simple bar of soap.
But Heman knew that simply mixing imiquimod with soap wouldn’t work, as it would just wash away. Instead, he thought of creating a soap that contained the medicine inside super tiny “nanoparticles”(纳米颗粒) to make sure it remains on the skin after the soap washed off, allowing imiquimod to take effect.
Last year, when he was 14, Heman created a video explaining his idea, and won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. He is now working with scientists at Johns Hopkins University, running tests to see if the soap helps mice with skin cancer.
Heman knows that it will take a long time and a lot of effort to develop his soap, but he’s excited about the work. He also encourages other young people to contribute. “Just keep inventing and thinking of new ways to improve our world and make it a better place,” Heman says.
28. What drove Heman Bekele to create the soap?
A. His curiosity about skin cancer.
B. His desire to develop a new medicine.
C. His concern for unprotected workers outdoors.
D. His family’s history of skin cancer.
29. Why does Heman use nanoparticles in his soap?
A. To make imiquimod affordable B. To help imiquimod stay on the skin.
C. To make imiquimod easier to use. D. To help imiquimod spread faster.
30. Which of the following best describes Heman according to the text?
A. Curious and creative. B. Focused and honest.
C. Understanding and modest. D. Efficient and generous.
31. What can be the suitable title of the passage?
A. Fight against skin cancer. B. Be a gifted teenager.
C. Meet a young scientist. D. Follow a medical career.

It’s Saturday night and you’ve downloaded a new food delivery app. You’ve scanned the menus, picked some Mexican dishes, placed your order and are now tracking the delivery. But your food never comes — and you never expected it to. It sounds silly if you’ve never tried it, but this viral trend is more popular than you might think. Just one app alone, FoodNeverComes, claims nearly 1 million “appetites satisfied” to date. Why would people bother spending time on apps or websites that are built to never deliver? Ultimately, it’s all about getting a dopamine(多巴胺) hit.
Dopamine plays several important roles, including motivating us toward goals and helping your brain learn which actions lead to beneficial outcomes. With these new dopamine platforms, users don’t need to demonstrate payment details but they will experience: anticipation (“I might find something good”), selection (“I control my choices”), and a feeling of confirmation (“My order is placed!”). The only element of the process missing is consumption (“I received it”).
These dopamine apps are relatively new, so we don’t yet have specific research on how much they might serve as “gateway behaviors”. A gateway behaviour is an initial behaviour that opens a pathway toward later behaviors becoming more likely. However, this is an area that’s been well studied before in other areas like gaming. And that past research raises potential concerns — particularly since these dopamine apps are designed to be game-like.
Remember the old saying, “there’s no such thing as a free lunch”! While these apps might be fun and free, your fake choices can still be incredibly valuable for marketers. Free apps often rely on advertising to pay for making their content free. Apps or websites that use Google AdSense to display their ads use tiny text files stored on your browser to track your online browsing habits. Third-party advertisers, including Google, can then use your history to serve you more targeted ads. If you do purchase that pretend jacket, don’t be surprised if you start seeing more ads for the real thing.
32. Why is the app FoodNeverComes mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To warn against online shopping. B. To show problems with food delivery.
C. To lead in a popular phenomenon. D. To illustrate people’s dietary preferences.
33. What can people obtain from dopamine platforms?
A. Real products at low prices. B. Suggestions for better choices.
C. Payment details for future use. D. A sense of control and excitement.
34. What does the author worry about regarding these dopamine apps?
A. They fail to attract enough users. B. They lead to other risky behaviors.
C. They charge high fees for services. D. They provide inaccurate information.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Dopamine Apps: A Hidden Trap B. FoodNeverComes: A Popular App
C. Google AdSense: A Tracking Tool D. Dopamine Apps: An Entertaining Game

Jack, Leo and Sam, about 9 years old, had grown up next to a small corner shop. Ever since they were little, they had wandered in for snacks and drinks, and the shop had quietly become part of their life. The owner, Cris, knew them well. He would often round down the price and wave away the small change, a habit that made him seem less like a shopkeeper and more like a friendly uncle.
One afternoon, after a lively football game, the three boys pushed open the familiar door as usual. After paying, they noticed Cris rearranging things on the counter, his movements slow and heavy. His face, usually warm and cheerful, looked tired and gloomy. Jack was the first to sense something wrong.
“Are you alright, Cris?” Jack asked cautiously.
Cris forced a smile and said, “Well, my shop may have to close soon. These days more and more people prefer shopping online, so few walk through my door. And the rent… I simply can’t afford it anymore. But I haven’t made a final decision…”
The boys stood frozen for a moment, too shocked to speak. Before leaving, Jack whispered something to Leo and Sam. They quietly emptied their pockets and pooled together ten dollars. “Cris is in trouble,” Jack said. “Let’s help him out.”
Jack placed the money on the counter and said, “Please keep going, Cris!” Before Cris could react, the three boys dashed (冲) out of the shop.
Cris stared at the ten dollars, his eyes blurring (模糊) with tears. He wept not only for his own struggles, but also because he was deeply moved by the boys’ innocent kindness.
The whole scene was captured by the shop’s camera. Later, Cris shared the touching video online, admitting that although he probably had to close his shop, the three boys’ kindness warmed his heart.

M: Hello, I know your Tiny Engineer workshop is for four-to five-year-olds. What sort of activities do you offer?
W: All sorts. For example, the kids can work together to design a special cover for an egg, so that they can drop it from a height and it doesn’t break. Well, sometimes it does break but that’s part of the fun!
M: Right. My daughter loves building things. Is there any opportunity for her to do that?
W: Well, we’ll have a competition to see who can make the highest tower.
M: Great.
W: And they’re learning all the time as well as having fun. For example, one thing they do is design and build a balloon-powered car.
M: OK, all this sounds fascinating. I wouldn’t mind doing that myself!

25. What does the underlined word “outgrown” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Become larger than. B. Got tired of.
C. Made use of. D. Looked forward to.
26. What does the author think of the team’s effort?
A. It is challenging. B. It is meaningful.
C. It is under-recognized. D. It is experimental.
27. Why does the robotics team undertake projects like Roo’s wheelchair?
A. To win robotics competitions. B. To gain experience in animal care.
C. To improve their 3D printing skills. D. To give back to their community.
C 25. A 26. B 27. D
根据第二段中的“So the Steel Eagles Robotics Team at Holy Savior Menard Central High School in Louisiana put their minds to work and began building a special type of wheelchair that gives Roo two wheels in place of her front legs.(因此,路易斯安那州圣救主梅纳德中央高中的“钢铁雄鹰机器人团队”便开始潜心钻研,为鲁建造了一款特殊轮椅 —— 用两个轮子替代它的前腿。)”
根据第三段中的“ is working on her second. The team will keep building new sizes until Roo is fully grown.(它现在正在使用第二个轮椅。团队将继续制作新的尺寸,直到Roo完全长大。)”可推知,Roo长大之后,第一个轮椅已经“不合身”了,即它的体型比第一个轮椅更大了。因此,“outgrown”意为“长得比……大”。故选A项。
结合第四段中人道协会主席Kristy Royall的评价“It’s wonderful to see technology used in such a caring way.(看到技术以如此有爱心的方式被使用,真是太棒了。)”
根据最后一段中的“According to coach Tonya Shepard, it is their goal to contribute to (做贡献)the community and do things that are actually helpful to the community.(据教练Tonya Shepard说,他们的目标是为社区做贡献,做一些真正对社区有帮助的事情。)”

C 29. B 30. A 31. C
根据文章第二段中“Heman remembers seeing people there working outside in the sun without proper sun protection, which may well increase the risk of skin cancer. From his parents’, he had a deeper understanding of its dangers. Skin cancer can often be cured, but the treatment is extremely expensive for those poor workers.(Heman记得看到那里的人们在没有适当防晒的情况下在阳光下工作,这很可能增加患皮肤癌的风险。他从父母那里对皮肤癌的危险性有了更深的了解。皮肤癌虽然常常可以治愈,但对贫困劳动者而言,治疗费用极为昂贵。)”可知,Heman回忆起看到人们在烈日下无防护地工作,且了解到昂贵的治疗费用是这些贫穷工人难以承受的。正是出于对这些户外无防护工人的关心与同情,驱使他去发明这种肥皂。
29. 细节理解题。根据文章第四段中“Instead, he thought of creating a soap that contained the medicine inside super tiny “nanoparticles” (纳米颗粒) to make sure it remains on the skin after the soap washed off, allowing imiquimod to take effect.( 相反,他想到要研制一种含有药物的肥皂,将药物封装在超微小的“纳米颗粒”中,确保肥皂洗去后药物仍能保留在皮肤上,从而让咪喹莫特发挥作用。)”
根据文章第三段中“Heman’s natural curiosity led him to experiment with different materials and at the age of 7, he nearly caused a fire with a chemistry set.( Heman天生的好奇心促使他尝试各种材料。
D
C 33. D 34. B 35. A
根据第一段“It sounds silly if you’ve never tried it, but this viral trend is more popular than you might think. Just one app alone, FoodNeverComes, claims nearly 1 million “appetites satisfied” to date. Why would people bother spending time on apps or websites that are built to never deliver? Ultimately, it’s all about getting a dopamine(多巴胺) hit.(如果你从未尝试过,这听起来很愚蠢,但这种病毒式的趋势比你想象的更受欢迎。
根据第二段“With these new dopamine platforms, users don’t need to demonstrate payment details but they will experience: anticipation (“I might find something good”), selection (“I control my choices”), and a feeling of confirmation (“My order is placed!”).(在这些新型多巴胺平台上,用户不需要提交支付细节,但他们会体验到:期待感(“我可能会找到好东西”)、选择感(“我能掌控自己的选择”)以及确定感(“我的订单已经下好了!”))”
根据第三段“These dopamine apps are relatively new, so we don’t yet have specific research on how much they might serve as “gateway behaviors”. A gateway behaviour is an initial behaviour that opens a pathway toward later behaviors becoming more likely. However, this is an area that’s been well studied before in other areas like gaming. And that past research raises potential concerns — particularly since these dopamine apps are designed to be game-like.(这些多巴胺应用相对较新,因此我们目前还没有具体研究表明它们可能会在多大程度上成为“入门行为”。
结合最后一段“Remember the old saying, “there’s no such thing as a free lunch”! While these apps might be fun and free, your fake choices can still be incredibly valuable for marketers.(记住那句老话:“天下没有免费的午餐”!虽然这些应用可能有趣又免费,但你的虚假选择对营销人员来说仍然价值极高。)”可知,作者认为这类多巴胺应用实际上是隐藏的陷阱,会消耗用户的个人数据,带来潜在风险,因此最合适的标题是“Dopamine Apps: A Hidden Trap(多巴胺应用:一个隐藏的陷阱)”。

My Senior School Life
It has been over a month since I stepped into senior high school, and my brand‑new school life turns out to be challenging yet incredibly rewarding.
Compared with junior high, senior study brings more subjects and heavier learning pressure. Fortunately, my teachers, who are always patient and devoted, offer valuable guidance whenever I get stuck in my studies. Meanwhile, I have made several close friends. We encourage each other and share happiness as well as worries. In my spare time, I take part in the school literature club, where I can appreciate excellent works and broaden my horizons.

The video was soon watched and shared by more and more people. Touched by the boys’ simple act of kindness, strangers near and far decided to lend a helping hand. Some reported the video online, urging others to visit the little shop. Soon, neighbors began to drop by to show their support. Day by day, Cris’ little shop was once again filled with familiar voices. To his surprise, his landlord also watched the video and contacted him, agreeing to cut the rent and hoping Cris would keep the shop open.
Learning about all this, the three boys asked about Cris’ final decision. Cris joked, “You three little shareholders decide. I’ll listen to you.” The boys were happy to know that their beloved little shop would stay. From then on, they often dropped by after school to help sort goods or carry boxes. Gradually, they became more than helpers — they were like little partners. Still, Cris understood that online attention would fade, so he needed to be more creative to keep his shop running.
