While getting into Harvard Law School is never easy for anyone, Rehan, whose single-parent family was poor, made it by himself.
Rehan lived through years of family struggles, poverty, and unfairness. He saw his father do several jobs to raise his brother and him with little rest and food. Rehan admitted he was pained and “hungry for more”. Life taught him the value of hard work and self-improvement at a very young age.
Those hard times tested the family as a whole. The more stressed Rehan was, the worse his grades became. His father told him to learn to relax by exercising. With a different purpose, he put his energy into sports, which he hoped would become his way out of a poor life.
However, things didn’t go that way. His father was in bad physical condition and then Rehan had to take a job at Bates Trucking & Trash Removal. He was smart and worked harder than any others. His co-workers spoke highly of him and tried to persuade him to go back to school. One of the company owners even helped him sign up at Bowie State University. Rehan earned a 4.0 grade point average and was able to transfer to the University of Maryland. But Rehan’s struggles still weren’t over. During his junior year at the University of Maryland, his father suffered a stroke (中风). Instead of dropping out of school, Rehan returned to Bates Trucking & Trash Removal in order to save his father. He got up each day at 3 am to work before class and doubled his learning plans. Finally, he graduated with good grades. Moreover, he began applying to Harvard Law School and made it.
With a sick father, a younger brother, a hard job, and a little time to learn, Rehan just had his own painful story to stand on. “Yes, Rehan has a quick mind, but what makes his achievement even more admirable is his courageous journey to this moment,” said his professor.
4. Why did Rehan go into sports?
A. He wished to change his life. B. He found his talent for sports.
C. He wanted to improve his mood. D. He tried to develop new hobbies.
5. What happened after Rehan went to work?
A. His father’s health gradually improved. B. He was refused by Bowie State University.
C. He could continue his study with others’ help. D. His co-workers found the job difficult for him.
6. Which of the following can best describe Rehan’s days in college?
A. Colourful but busy. B. Fresh and relaxing.
C. Adventurous and funny. D. Challenging but worthwhile.
7. What can we learn from Rehan’s story?
A. It’s impossible for poor people to enter top universities.
B. Never give up even if life is full of sufferings.
C. We should turn to our parents for help whenever in trouble.
D. Doing part-time jobs always makes our study worse.
A 5. C 6. D 7. B

Instead of dropping out of school, Rehan returned to Bates Trucking & Trash Removal in order to save his father. He got up each day at 3 am to work before class and doubled his learning plans. Finally, he graduated with good grades.

The Saint Lukas train doesn’t accept passengers — it accepts only the sick. The Saint Lukas is one of five government-sponsored (赞助) medical trains that travel to remote towns in central and eastern Russia. Each stop lasts an average of two days, and during that time the doctors and nurses on board provide rural (乡村) populations with basic medical care, X-ray scans and prescriptions.
“People started waiting to make an appointment early in the morning,” says Emile Ducke, a German photographer who traveled with the staff of the Saint Lukas for a two-week trip in November through the vast regions of Krasnoyarsk and Khakassia.
Russia’s public health care service has been in serious need of modernization. The government has struggled to come up with measures to address the problem, particularly in the poorer, rural areas east of the Volga River, including arranging doctor’s appointments by video chat and extending financial aid programs to inspire doctors to practice medicine in remote parts of the country like Krasnoyarsk.
The yearly arrival of the Saint Lukas is another attempt to improve the situation. For 10 months every year, the train stops at about eight stations over two weeks, before returning to the regional capital to refuel and restock (补给). Then it starts all over again the next month. Most stations wait about a year between visits.
Doctors see up to 150 patients every day. The train’s equipment allows for basic checkups “I was very impressed by the doctors and their assistants working and living in such little space but still staying focused and very concerned,” says Ducke. “They were the best chance for many rural people to get the treatment they want.”
8. How is the Saint Lukas different from other trains?
A. It runs across countries. B. It reserves seats for the seniors.
C. It functions as a hospital. D. It travels along a river.
9. What can we infer from Paragraph 3 about Krasnoyarsk?
A. It is heavily populated. B. It offers training for doctors.
C. It is a modern city. D. It needs medical aid.
10. How long can the Saint Lukas work with one supply?
A. About a year. B. About ten months. C. About two months. D. About two weeks.
11. What is Ducke’s attitude toward the Saint Lukas’ services?
A. Appreciative. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Cautious.
C 9. D 10. D 11. A

When talking about colds, maybe some people say it is very common. During the cold winter days, many people will complain the cold winter makes them catch a cold, and what they feel upset about are not only the beadache, cough but also the runny nose. It is so embarrassing when they forget to take tissue along with them.
Want to stay away from colds? Put on a happy face.
Compared to unhappy people, those who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. It’s possible that being happy helps the body fight illnesses, say the researchers from New York University. “It seems that positive feelings may reduce the danger of illness,” said the study’s chief researcher Sheldon Cohen. In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often. People who showed feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill. In this study, Cohen has interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. During the interviews, the people told researchers that they were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days. The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get ill. But for people who said they felt happy during the research period, their illnesses were less serious and lasted for a shorter time.
Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may produce a chemical that helps fight illness and disease. So if you are worried about your health, look on the brighter side more often.
12. The underlined part “showed feelings” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by ________.
A. were outgoing B. were clever C. got sad D. got thoughtful.
13. What did the study find?
A. People who felt happy never got ill.
B. People’s feelings had no effect on their health.
C. People with good feelings became ill more easily.
D. People with positive feelings recovered more quickly.
14. According to Cohen, which of the following may help fight illness?
A. Laughing. B. Eating. C. Crying. D. Sleeping.
15. What is the best title for this text?
A. Causes of Colds Found B. Ways of Preventing Colds
C. Smiles Can Fight Colds D. How People Get Sick
A 13. D 14. A 15. C

One of the most common mistakes in communication is trying to do too much. ____16____ There’s no value in delivering any kind of communication, whether written, spoken, formal, or informal, if the message doesn’t come across clearly. Being clear and brief — while maintaining interest and including everything your listeners need to know — is a high-level communication skill.
Here are some tips worth following in order to communicate more effectively.
Keep your audience in mind.
Your audience will naturally be more interested and engaged when you tailor your communications to their interests. ____17____ This will engage their desire to understand and interact with the information.
Don’t use ten words when one will do.
Even the most engaged and committed audience will eventually get bored. Keeping your message simple and clear will make it easier for people to understand. ____18____ However, they’re hearing it for the first time. Keep it simple.
____19____
If you’ve ever worked as an instructor, manager, trainer or coach, you’ll know that there are few better ways to learn new information than to teach it. Ask the audience to contribute their ideas or to take a role in explaining new concepts and policies to others. Allow them to lead discussions and meetings to develop their communication skills.
Consider the best method to deliver your message.
If the information you’re communicating isn’t urgent, consider sending an email. Written communication will give your audience more time to review it, think it over, and follow up with questions. ____20____
Building effective communication skills takes time, but the effects are worth the effort.
A. Be patient.
B. Get the audience involved.
C. The best messages are often simple.
D. Speak directly to what matters to them.
E. You may be surprised by what your listeners offer.
F. It will also give them a handy record to refer back to.
G. As the speaker, you already know what you’re going to say.

上文“If the information you’re communicating isn’t urgent, consider sending an email. Written communication will give your audience more time to review it, think it over, and follow up with questions.(如果你传达的信息不紧急,考虑发电子邮件。书面沟通会给你的受众更多时间来复习、思考,并跟进提问)”说明了发邮件这种书面沟通的好处,F选项“It will also give them a handy record to refer back to.(它还会给他们提供一个方便查阅的记录)”进一步补充了发邮件的另一个好处,与上文逻辑紧密。故选F项。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was about ten years old, my brother and I received a wonderful gift — tennis rackets and balls. We had never had the opportunity to play tennis, so this was exciting. However, there was one problem — the small town we lived in did not have a tennis court.
One Sunday morning my brother said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea. Let’s take our tennis rackets and balls to the school and hit the balls against the school building.”
“Great idea! Let’s go,” I agreed, not realizing what a lesson we would learn before the experience was over.
When we got to the school ground, no one was around, so we began hitting our balls against the side of the two-story brick building.
“I’ll hit it the first time,” my brother suggested, “then you hit it the next time. We’ll hit it back and forth to each other.”
So we began taking turns hitting the ball, getting more confident with each stroke. Actually, we became pretty good at returning the ball and we were hitting the ball higher and faster each time.
Suddenly, the unthinkable happened — the ball got out of control and went crashing through one of the upstairs windows.
We looked around and no one was in sight — except there was an old man stting on a porch halfway down the block.
Quietly, I asked, “Now what should we do? Our ball is inside the school.”
“Well,” my brother responded, “no one will know whose ball it is. And no one saw us, except that old man down there. And he probably can’t see this far.”
“He probably doesn’t know who we are anyway,” I added.
“Let’s go home,” my brother suggested.
“Okay,” I agreed. “Should we tell Mom and Dad?”
“I don’t know,” my brother answered.
Then we picked up the rest of our balls and headed for home, keeping silent all the way with our heads drooping.
“What happened?” asked my mother, seeing us in low spirits.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The following morning my brother and I went to the headmaster’s office.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“What happened?” asked my mother, seeing us in low spirits. “Well,” my brother slowly began, “we hit the tennis ball too hard and too high and it went right through the school window”. “Oh, my goodness!” my mother exclaimed. After a short pause, her voice softened when she asked us if we had reported this to the school. Lips bitten, we shook our heads. “It will cost all of our pocket money”, I muttered. “But there is always something more important than money”, she said soothingly, patting me on the shoulder. Slowly lifting my head, I encountered my mother’s encouraging eyes and a decision was made.
The following morning my brother and I went to the headmaster’s office. Nervous and frightened, we inched into the office. There sat our stern-looking headmaster. “We have something to confess...”, we spilled our story with a hint of fear in our voices. He looked very somber and we were sure that the news was bad. Then he smiled, “I am proud of you kids for having the courage to tell me what happened”. He could see our relief as he continued, “Many windows had been broken, but you were the first ones to admit that you were responsible. For that, you don’t have to pay for the broken window, because honesty comes before anything else”.

B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Cautious.
D
