When my old dog developed major health problems, I knew that watching him fail would be painful, but I wasn’t prepared for the powerful lessons he’d offer in the last year of his life.
Chance was 14 when the problems started. First, he developed a cancer that left him whistling for breath. Then came cataracts (白内障) in both eyes, arthritis (关节炎) in his legs, and mini-strokes (小中风) that threw off his balance. Any one of these misfortunes would have left me begging for relief, but Chance became calmer as the disabilities piled up.
When leg pain left him frozen on the floor, unable to rise for a quick pat as I came home, he didn’t complain. He just lay there patiently, signaling me with his hammering tail, each movement spelling out the value of waiting for the things you want. When his cataracts made steering impossible after dark, he’d stand calmly until I could guide him inside, proving how easy it is to find happiness if you let go of your pride and insecurities and learn to lean on those who love you. When mini-strokes had him walk unsteadily like a drunk, he taught the value of persistence (锲而不舍). For days after each attack, he’d fall as he moved about. Yet again and again he’d try to walk, each day moving a few more steps until finally he was able to get outside and back by himself.
There were lessons in so much of what he did, but the key one surely was the importance of obtaining all the joy possible from each experience whether it’s a day lazing under a warm sun or a few minutes appreciating a favorite meal.
For most of our life together, Chance was always rushing ahead, searching out new adventures, and then circling back to let me know what lay around the next turn. As an old dog, he did the same thing, using his attitude, instead of his once-fast legs, to show the way.
24. Chance suffered very much from all the diseases he had except for _______.
A. having problem with breath
B. walking around uncomfortably
C. having trouble drinking
D. losing his eyesight in darkness
25. _______ is the most important lesson the author learned from Chance.
A. Living in the present and enjoying what we have
B. Learning to depend on those who we love and trust
C. That we should expect good things to happen patiently
D. That we should persevere in what we believe is worth trying
26. It is implied in the passage that _______.
A. people could face aging with courage and calm
B. pets would become calmer for lack of energy in their last days
C. people might suffer from different diseases when they grow old
D. pets and masters should stick together helping each other in difficulty
27. Which of the following words best describes the author’s feelings to Chance?
A. Bitter. B. Appreciative. C. Proud. D. Anxious.

For the first time, renewable energy has replaced coal as the top source of electricity around the world, a new report says.
Renewable energy, like solar, wind and water, contributed 34.3% of all global electricity produced in the first half of 2025, while coal fell to 33.1%, the energy expert Ember found.
Developing countries like China took the lead in adding more renewable energy, Ember reported. Countries including Hungary and Pakistan set records in solar energy production, producing 20% or more of their electricity from solar power.
The report found that global CO₂ emissions fell slightly in the first half of the year as solar and wind power grew faster than demand and led to a small fall in fossil fuel (化石燃料) use.
While the world is seeing significant gains in making energy cleaner, increased demand leaves renewables struggling to meet consumer needs. “It’s a question of whether the wind and solar is able to keep pace with the demand growth. If wind and solar don’t grow fast enough, we have to keep running the gas and coal power plants,” said Daniel Cohan, a professor of environmental engineering. The tech race to add AI to daily life is partly responsible. “With the growth of data centers and other growth from industries and air conditioning, we’re starting to see electricity demand grow 3% per year, rather than be flat or 1%,” Cohan said.
While it is eventually cheaper and cleaner to rely on wind and the sun for power once the plants are running, Cohan said funding the infrastructure (设施) for renewables remains a challenge.
China and other countries have been able to succeed because they predicted a rising desire for renewable energy and spent big on it.
28. Which figures show the efforts made by developing countries in renewable energy growth?
A. 3%. B. 20%. C. 33.1%. D. 34.3%.
29. What is a challenge facing renewable energy according to Cohan?
A. Rising costs for production.
B. Races for technology development.
C. Lack of support from developed countries.
D. Mismatch between energy supply and demand.
30. How has China achieved its renewable energy success?
A. By taking early action. B. By closing coal plants.
C. By upgrading facilities. D. By introducing AI to daily life.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To compare different kinds of energy production.
B. To prove the importance of cutting down CO₂ emissions.
C. To present the progress and challenges of renewable energy.
D. To explain how fossil fuels are replaced by renewable energy.
D
Amazon sells 1,161 kinds of toilet brushes. I know this because I recently spent an evening trying to choose one of them for the bathroom in my new apartment. Nearly an hour later, after having read countless contradictory (矛盾的) reviews and considering far too many choices, I felt tired and simply gave up. The next day, I happily bought the only toilet brush the local dollar store offered.
Too many choices exhaust us, make us unhappy and lead us to sometimes flee (逃避) from making a decision altogether. Researcher Barry Schwartz calls this “choice overload”. And it’s not just insignificant details like which brush to wipe the inside of the toilet with — having too many choices in our creative and professional lives can lead us to avoid making important decisions.
Understanding how and why we make decisions can perhaps help us make better choices down the line. We make poorer decisions when we are tired. It’s caused by decision fatigue (疲劳). The mind can only sort through so many choices and make so many choices before it starts to run out of steam. That’s why impulse buys (冲动型购物) like candy bars and magazines at the checkout aisle in the grocery store can be hard to resist. We’ve exhausted all our good decision-making skills.
The same goes for our workday. Making lots of decisions not only exhausts us; it can put us in a bad mood. That’s why it’s necessary to make your most important decisions in the morning rather than at the end of an exhausting day when your energy has been used up. The idiom “sleep on it” is indeed effective when it comes to making big decisions.
When we’re tired, we tend to save our energy by making choices based on a single factor like price, rather than considering all the other factors that go into making the best decision. When you’re doing this, you are acting as what researchers call a cognitive miser (小气鬼).
To conclude, letting yourself have fewer choices to choose from can help you arrive at a more creative answer.
32. Why did the author go to the local dollar store in the end?
A. She saw no good toilet brushes in Amazon.
B. She had got tired of the choices.
C. She read good reviews about brushes there.
D. She wanted to save some money.
33. What can we learn about “choice overload”?
A. It can benefit our creative thinking.
B. It means learning too much at a time.
C. It was first discovered by Barry Schwartz.
D. It can stop us from making good decisions at work.
34. What does the underlined idiom “sleep on it” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. To make decisions at the end of the day.
B. To think carefully about making a big decision.
C. To make a big decision regardless of sleepiness.
D. To postpone making big decisions until the next morning.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Getting enough sleep every day is helpful.
B. Having fewer choices may benefit us more.
C. Reading reviews before shopping online is important.
D. Considering many factors to make a choice is unnecessary

It is brave to admit your mistake. You may be scared of being scolded. But it is the only way for you to be free from guilt.
Simon was a curious boy. He lived with his grandfather. Simon was fond of reading adventure stories. So he was always curious about the store room where his grandfather kept his priceless antiques(古董). Though Simon knew his grandfather did not like anyone to touch his rare collections, he quietly entered the storeroom without his grandfather ‘s permission one night.
Once inside the room, Simon stood on a chair. He lifted the big box wherein his grandfather had kept many valuable watches bought from different countries he had visited. While getting down from the chair, Simon's elbow(肘部) struck against the chair. When he tried his best to pull his arm out, the box slipped out of his hands and fell onto the floor. All the watches lay all around. To his shock, he found the glass of his grandfather's favorite watch broken. Simon was afraid that his grandfather would come to know about the broken glass. He started picking up the pieces of glass hurriedly. Simon thought, My grandmother gifted the watch to my grandfather. This must be one of his most treasured possessions. How could I tell him that his favorite watch had broken? He must be angry with me. If I do not tell him, he will not come to know about it. " Simon got nervous. His heart started beating faster. He put the broken watch back into the box and placed the box back on the shelf. Afterwards, he went to sleep. However, he could not sleep in peace throughout the whole night. The broken watch even showed up in his dream.
The next morning, Simon got up much earlier than before. The sleepless night made him realize that holding back the truth itself was more uncomfortable than breaking the watch. "But that watch is Grandpa's favorite and he told me to be careful of the box before." Simon said to himself and didn't dare to face his grandfather.

Dear fellow students,
With environmental problems becoming more and more serious, our school has started the “Beat Plastic Pollution” campaign to raise our environmental awareness. I am here to call on everyone to reduce the use of plastic.
Millions of tons of plastic products are produced annually, with only a small quantity recycled. So we should take effective measures to help out. We can start by replacing single-use plastics with reusable options. Moreover, it is strongly suggested that we avoid buying products with plastic packaging.
Let’s take action to rid the world of plastic pollution and improve our environment.

第2部分 :
Though still worried about himself being scolded, Simon finally gathered the courage to see his grandfather. With his head down, Simon slowly came up to his grandfather , who was reading in the living room, and murmured in a trembling voice, “I’m sorry, grandpa.” He suddenly burst into tears. Grandfather patted him on the head, saying in a soft tone, “What happened, my dear?”“I apologize to you for entering your storeroom without your permission yesterday.” Simon sobbed for a while and continued nervously, “What’s worse, I broke your watch gifted by grandmother. I beg your pardon.” To his surprise, Grandpa said with a smile,“It doesn’t matter, I will repair it. Why not tell me the truth yesterday?”
Simon said, "I was scared at first, but I dared not tell a lie." Grandfather hugged Simon tightly, “Actually I knew the truth last night when I checked it. It is so brave and honest of you to admit your mistake. I am really proud of you. Honesty is far more important than the watch.” Simon was deeply moved by these words. He looked into his grandfather’s eyes and said with a determined look, “I will never forget to be an honest man , I promise, grandpa”.

M: Take me for example — I should pay the babysitter 120 pounds a day while I’m paid 80 pounds a day.

【详解】 W: Hi, have you ever heard of Helen Beatrix Potter? She was an English writer, illustrator and natural scientist. She is best known for her children’s books featuring animals, such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which was her first commercially published work in 1902. Her books, including 23 tales, have sold more than 250 million copies. In 1903, Peter Rabbit was the first fictional character to be made into a patented stuffed toy, making him the oldest licensed character. With the proceeds from the books and a legacy from an aunt, in 1905, Potter became the owner of the Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey, a village in the Lake District. Over the following decades, she purchased additional farms to preserve the unique hill country landscape. In 1913, at the age of 47, she married William Heelis, a respected local lawyer with an office in Hawkshead. Potter died on 22nd December 1943 at her home in Near Sawrey, leaving almost all her property to the National Trust. She is credited with preserving much of the land that now makes up the Lake District National Park. Potter’s books continue to sell well throughout the world in many languages with her stories being retold in songs, films, and ballet, and her life is described in two films and a television series.
