It challenges participants, both individually and in teams, to solve linguistic (语言学的) puzzles. To compete at the IOL, no special knowledge is required, only basic language concepts, logic (逻辑), patience, and creative thinking. Try this beginner sample to see if the IOL is right for you. A PuzzleThe names  of some  South American countries are written in Georgian (格鲁吉亚语) with their English translations:     Brazil     Peru     Uruguay Q: What is the English name of this country “”? The SolutionThe Georgian forms of “Peru” and “Uruguay” have the same number of letters as their English names, showing a direct letter match. The repeated U in “Uruguay” further confirms Georgian is written left-to-right. “Brazil” has fewer letters than the Georgian version, but thanks to the two other names, we already know: -R, -A, -G, -E. With these letters, the pattern can be translated as “A R G E _ _ _ _ A”, which is “Argentina”. Contest Rules ● Each individual contestant or team must choose a working language for their problems and solutions, a choice that cannot be changed less than two weeks before the Olympiad begins. ● The individual contest involves solving five problems in six hours, whereas the team contest features one problem with two hours less. ● Unless instructed, giving multiple answers will receive zero marks. Besides, a detailed explanation is required for each answer; failure to provide one will result in a lower score.Awards The team contest will award up to one gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. In the individual contest, the number of gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded shall be in the ratio 1:2:3, with the total number of medals being between one quarter and one third of the contestants. Click here to find out other awards. 21.(2.5分)Which is vital to solve the sample puzzle? A.Linguistic fluency. B.Mathematical skills. C.Geographic knowledge. D.Reasoning ability. 22.(2.5分)What is one difference between the rules for the individual and team contest? A.The duration of the competition. B.The deadline for language choice. C.The result of giving multiple answers. D.The requirement for answer explanations. 23.(2.5分)If there are 240 individual contestants, how many medals could be awarded in total? A.40. B.54. C.72. D.84. (本题10分)Sitting on the sofa, I started checking on my phone. It was the winter of 2017 and my best friend Jacob, 25, who I lived with, was getting on my nerves, and I on his. I needed a hobby to get me out of the house. On Facebook, I came across a beginners’ course for underwater rugby which gained appeal as a means of developing teamwork through non-verbal (非语言的) communication. I’d always loved the water, so I went along. I was greeted by an enthusiastic coach Bobby. He got me swimming lengths on the surface, then from the top to the bottom. On the other side of the pool, advanced players were having a session. That they scored goals underwater got me excited. Within weeks, I was playing matches. The sport was played in 3D, meaning you could pass the ball in any direction, even up and down, and opponents could come at you from anywhere. Tackles involved grabbing hold of someone to slow them down and trying to get the ball off them. Often, I’d be so engaged that I wouldn’t think about my breathing until I’d pushed myself too far. I’d then rapidly make my way to the surface for breath, hoping my teammates had taken possession. With each game, my lung capacity increased until I could hold my breath for a full minute while playing. We formed a team called the Raiders, and in November we went to Berlin to compete against teams from other countries. It was the first Australian men’s team and although we came second-last, we had so much fun. My teammates have become close friends. “I want to try it,” Jacob said when he saw how many new friends I had. The classes were inclusive for all levels, and he picked it up as he went. He loved it and because we were both out of the house more, we no longer got on each other’s nerves. There are now hundreds of people playing underwater rugby around Australia, ranging in age from 17 into their late 50s. So I encourage anyone who can to give it a try. 24.(2.5分)Why did the author want to find a hobby? A.To enrich his spare time. B.To reduce the academic stress. C.To ease tension with his roommate. D.To improve his physical fitness. 25.(2.5分)What’s the main idea of paragraph 3? A.The process of participation. B.The training techniques. C.The interaction with the coach. D.The fruits of hard work. 26.(2.5分)How does the author benefit from the experience? A.Landing a high-paying job. B.Learning to avoid team conflicts. C.Winning the international championship. D.Enhancing physical fitness and social bonds. 27.(2.5分)What can we learn from the passage? A.A good talk clears the air. B.A relaxing hobby eases the mind. C.A small sport makes a big difference. D.A team sport fuels the competitive spirit. (本题10分)Second place is just the first loser. While the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it doesn’t always lead to human flourishing and can create misery. Fortunately, there is a formula to solve this problem: instead of always going for gold, shoot for the bronze. Though second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner regarding happiness and longevity. In a 1995 study, scholars systematically coded the emotional reactions of silver and bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. Using slow-motion footage captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium (领奖台), researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. Over 80% of bronze medalists exhibited genuine smiles, a figure that was nearly double that observed among silver medalists. Moreover, every bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than the average smile observed among the silver medalists. More recent research has looked at the life span of all three medalist categories. A 2018 study found that the athlete whose best performance was silver lived to 72. Gold medalists beat this by four years, living to 76. But first prize in longevity went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78. The study had a handy explanation for this discrepancy: “Unsatisfactory competition outcomes may adversely affect health.” In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists, whereas the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory shows the difference between upward and downward social comparison. The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish. It tends to lower the intrinsic motivation, and thus enjoyment that people obtain from their activities. The principle at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you. 28.(2.5分)What can be learned from the 1995 study? A.Both medalists’ emotions were unchanged from the events to the podium. B.Silver medalists smiled as frequently as bronze medalists. C.Bronze medalists’ smiles lasted longer than every silver medalists. D.Bronze winners appeared happier than silver medalists. 29.(2.5分)What is the cause of the difference in medalists’ life span? A.The stress from downward social comparison. B.The effect of different types of social comparison. C.The motivation from upward social comparison. D.The failure to look up to the top after the competition. 30.(2.5分)What does the writer advise us to do to achieve happiness? A.Learn from the top performers. B.Strengthen our achievement motivation. C.Try to be the best in every field. D.Commit to our consistent personal growth. 31.(2.5分)Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A.Social Comparison: A Double-Edged Sword for Athletes B.Coming in Third: The Advantages of Being “Good Enough” C.Coming in Third: The Unexpected Secret to Longevity D.Social Comparison: The Root of Misery in Human Competition (本题10分)You only need to think of any marathon you’ve watched to assume that men tend to outperform women in sport. But an interesting recent research has triggered the discussion. It is highlighted that the male-female performance gap in ultra-endurance (极限耐力) competitions is as low as 4 percent, while it’s around 10 percent in traditional endurance sport. And the difference seems to reduce the longer the event becomes, to the point that women even outperform men when it comes to events like ultra-distance swimming. When it comes to the marathon, we know that finishing times are greatly influenced by VO2max (最大摄氧量). However, these factors have been shown to be less influential in ultra-endurance performance. What this means is that success in ultra-marathons must be determined by the interplay of other physiological characteristics. If we look at the physiology, men tend to have more type II muscle fibers, which are good for high power output sports such as sprinting (短跑). Women have more type I muscle fibers, which produce less force but are more resistant to exhaustion — ideal for ultra-endurance events. Besides, as distances increase and intensity subsequently decreases, we rely more on fat to provide energy to our working muscles. Research currently suggests that compared to males, endurance-trained females use more fat even at rest and so they have spare essential carbohydrate stores. This would mean they’re less likely to hit “the wall” in a race. Sports psychologists have also suggested that women are generally better at bearing pain, reframing feelings such as exhaustion and enjoying the process rather than worrying about the outcome, all of which might lead to a better performance. As persuasive as these theories are, it’s hard to properly draw a firm conclusion that women excel in ultra-endurance sports. Ultra-endurance events appeal to a very small and specialized part of the population rather than the mainstream and the small numbers of women participating make it challenging to draw conclusions, and it’s rare to find direct comparisons with men. Hopefully this will change over time. 32.(2.5分)What can we learn about the research from Paragraph 1? A.Men perform better than women in sports on the whole. B.Ultra-endurance sports are gaining popularity among women. C.Men are comparatively at a disadvantage in traditional endurance sport. D.The performance divide between men and women closes as distances grow. 33.(2.5分)Which of the following accounts for women’s better ultra-endurance performance? A.They have more type II muscle fibers. B.They are better at burning fat for energy. C.They are less dependent on carbohydrate. D.They care more about competition results. 34.(2.5分)What does the last paragraph focus on? A.The intention of the research. B.The influence of the research. C.The limitation of the research. D.The conclusion of the research. 35.(2.5分)What is the purpose of the passage? A.To make a comparison between males and females in sports. B.To clarify a fact that females are equally competent in sports. C.To explain why women make better ultra-endurance athletes. D.To advocate more women engaging in ultra-endurance sports. (本题12.5分)During low-intensity and moderate-intensity exercise (such as walking and cycling), we tend to breathe in through our noses and out through our mouths. Most of us would assume breathing through the mouth is the best technique to use during intense exercise (such as running), as it allows more oxygen to reach our muscles. 36(2.5分) Studies have shown that when exercising at different intensities, less oxygen is used when breathing through the nose compared to breathing through the mouth. 37(2.5分) Think of oxygen like fuel for cars. The more miles per gallon of fuel a car covers, the better its “fuel economy” is. Likewise, the less oxygen used per footstep, the less energy a person uses. This means you can run further without becoming tired quickly. Researchers also suggest that breathing through your nose increases the production of nitric oxide (一氧化氮), which benefits the body in several ways. It enhances oxygen delivery to the lungs and muscles by lowering blood pressure and facilitating better blood flow. 38(2.5分) While these all sound incredibly encouraging, there is some negativity to be aware of. 39(2.5分) If you introduce it without training first, it could lead to “air hunger” — a process whereby a small amount of carbon dioxide is retained (保留) at the end of each breath. This can cause discomfort and overbreathing. As with anything, practice makes perfect. 40(2.5分) Try and relax into the process. Ensure your tongue is at the top of your mouth, as this relaxes the jaw and face muscles making it easier to draw a deep breath through your nose. You can also alternate between breathing through your nose and your mouth until you get more used to breathing only through your nose. A.But evidence shows the contrary. B.This may not be suitable for other types of exercise. C.It may also provide protection against airborne viruses. D.When learning to breathe through the nose, don’t force air in. E.Be sure to breathe through your nose while running next time. F.Breathing only through the nose during exercise is a learned process. G.This could be a real advantage in line with the economy of movement. 三、完形填空 (本题15分)The turning point of my college football career came early in my third year. Most importantly, I was worried about performing poorly. Fortunately, my classmate Anna kindly offered to help me prepare. After school, we spent several hours together in the kitchen, practicing my recipe over and over again. She guided me patiently, showing me how to chop vegetables evenly, cook the pasta (意大利面食) perfectly, and mix the ingredients carefully. She even gave me tips on how to make the salad look more appealing on the plate by arranging colors and shapes neatly. Her encouragement and advice made me feel more confident and make much progress. Every weekend, for a whole month, we got up early so that we could have enough time to practice and we followed the same routine to prepare for the competition. In the beginning, we carefully selected the freshest vegetables from the market, checking each carrot, cucumber, and lettuce leaf for quality. Anna reminded me to time every step perfectly, so the pasta would not be overcooked and the vegetables would remain crisp and fresh. We also practiced plating the salad neatly, arranging the colors and shapes to make it look attractive, because presentation was just as important as taste. Each rehearsal made me feel more confident and ready. And by the night before the competition, I was nervous but also excited to show what we had learned. On the day of the contest, standing at the center of the bustling school campus, I felt the crowd’s eyes on me and my anxiety returned immediately. The tables were neatly arranged with all the ingredients we would need, while students from other classes moved quickly, chopping, stirring, and plating with confidence. At first, I hesitated, afraid of making mistakes in front of so many people and worried that my pasta salad would not turn out well. My hands trembled slightly as I picked up the knife. The things did not go smoothly. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The judges announced the winners, and to my surprise, I won third place. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2 / 2 2 / 2 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高中英语单元测试——Unit 2 Sports Culture(适中版01) 学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、听力选择题 1.(本题1.5分)Which sports game is airing on TV now? C.Pressure affects thinking in games. M: When I was young, I used to play card games. Unlike many people, I didn’t play for fun, but competed in competitions. Hundreds of players go to a large building, usually a hotel, and play against each other with strict rules. I did this until I was a teenager. The competition was strong. The interesting thing about playing card games in competitions is how the watching crowd affects your ability to make decisions. Card games are all about thinking about moves. This is something we all have to do every day. The cool thing about card games is that they keep your thoughts away from everything else. It is pure thinking. But, in competitions, people make simple mistakes that would seem crazy when playing for fun. In real life, we don’t get to see our decisions and their results so clearly as with card games. However, people watching and judging your moves affects your thinking more than you can imagine. For me, that is the real lesson of card games. It is a lesson I still remember as an adult. 二、阅读理解 (本题7.5分)The International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) is a competition for pre-university students, held in a different country each year since 2003. A.Social Comparison: A Double-Edged Sword for Athletes B.Coming in Third: The Advantages of Being “Good Enough” C.Coming in Third: The Unexpected Secret to Longevity D.Social Comparison: The Root of Misery in Human Competition 【答案】28.D 29.B 30.D 31.B 【导语】文章通过奥运奖牌研究,指出铜牌得主比银牌得主更幸福长寿,并建议人们放下争第一的执念,专注于自我成长。 根据第二段中“Using slow-motion footage captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium (领奖台), researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. (通过分别在比赛刚结束时以及之后颁奖台上拍摄的慢镜头,研究人员发现铜牌获得者平均来看始终显得比银牌获得者更开心。)”可知,该研究发现铜牌得主看起来比银牌得主更快乐。 29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists, whereas the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory shows the difference between upward and downward social comparison. (换句话说,银牌得主把自己视为第一失败者,因为他们仰望最高领奖台,只与金牌得主比较;而铜牌得主则会和所有根本没能站上领奖台的人进行更有利的自我比较。这一理论显示了向上社会比较与向下社会比较之间的差异。)”可知,这种寿命差异的原因在于不同社会比较类型的影响。 30.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The principle at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you. (这里适用的原则是努力提升你过去的表现,而唯一需要与之比较的人,就是你自己。)”可知,作者建议我们致力于持续的个人成长。 31.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Fortunately, there is a formula to solve this problem: instead of always going for gold, shoot for the bronze. (幸运的是,这个问题有一个解决方法:与其总是追求金牌,不如争取铜牌。)”可知,文章基于奥运奖牌研究,指出获得铜牌的优势,建议采纳铜牌代表的人生智慧——满足于“足够好”,并专注于自我成长。因此,“获得第三名:‘足够好’的优势”最契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。 (本题10分)You only need to think of any marathon you’ve watched to assume that men tend to outperform women in sport. 根据第一段“And the difference seems to reduce the longer the event becomes, to the point that women even outperform men when it comes to events like ultra-distance swimming.(而且,这种情况似乎随着赛事时间的延长而逐渐减少,以至于在超长距离游泳等项目中,女性甚至超过了男性)”可知,比赛距离增加,男女运动差距逐渐缩小。 33. 根据第三段“Research currently suggests that compared to males, endurance-trained females use more fat even at rest and so they have spare essential carbohydrate stores.(目前的研究表明,与男性相比,耐力训练过的女性即使在静息状态下也消耗更多的脂肪,因此她们体内拥有额外的必需碳水化合物储备)”可知,女性更擅长分解脂肪供能,适配长距离耐力运动。 34. 根据最后一段“Ultra-endurance events appeal to a very small and specialized part of the population rather than the mainstream and the small numbers of women participating make it challenging to draw conclusions.(超长距离赛事吸引的是极少数特定人群,而非主流群体,而参与其中的女性人数较少,因此很难得出结论)”可知,本段点明该项研究存在局限性。 35. 上文“Most of us would assume breathing through the mouth is the best technique to use during intense exercise (such as running), as it allows more oxygen to reach our muscles. (我们大多数人会认为在剧烈运动如跑步时,用嘴呼吸是最佳技巧,因为它能让更多氧气到达肌肉)”提出普遍看法,认为剧烈运动时用嘴呼吸更好,下文“Studies have shown that when exercising at different intensities, less oxygen is used when breathing through the nose compared to breathing through the mouth.(研究表明,在不同强度运动时,用鼻呼吸比用嘴呼吸消耗的氧气更少)”呈现了与普遍看法相反的研究结果。 37.上文“Studies have shown that when exercising at different intensities, less oxygen is used when breathing through the nose compared to breathing through the mouth.(研究表明,在不同强度运动时,用鼻呼吸比用嘴呼吸消耗的氧气更少)”说明鼻呼吸更节省氧气,下文“Think of oxygen like fuel for cars. The more miles per gallon of fuel a car covers, the better its “fuel economy” is. Likewise, the less oxygen used per footstep, the less energy a person uses.(把氧气想象成汽车的燃料。汽车每加仑燃料行驶的里程越多,其“燃油经济性”就越好。同样地,每步消耗的氧气越少,人使用的能量就越少)”用汽车燃油经济性作类比,解释省氧带来的能量效率优势。G选项“This could be a real advantage in line with the economy of movement.(这可能是一个与运动经济性相符的真正优势)”中的This指代上文“less oxygen is used”,同时引出下文的类比解释,符合语境。 38.上文“Researchers also suggest that breathing through your nose increases the production of nitric oxide (一氧化氮), which benefits the body in several ways. It enhances oxygen delivery to the lungs and muscles by lowering blood pressure and facilitating better blood flow.(研究人员还指出,用鼻呼吸会增加一氧化氮的产生,这对身体有多种益处。它通过降低血压和促进更好的血流来增强氧气向肺部和肌肉的输送)”列举了鼻呼吸产生一氧化氮的益处。C选项“It may also provide protection against airborne viruses.(它也可能提供针对空气传播病毒的保护)”中的also表示递进,补充了鼻呼吸的另一项好处,与上文列举的益处构成并列,且下文“While these all sound incredibly encouraging, there is some negativity to be aware of. (虽然这些听起来都令人鼓舞,但也有一些负面因素需要注意)”中的these指代前文提到的所有益处,包括此项,符合语境。 39.上文“While these all sound incredibly encouraging, there is some negativity to be aware of. (虽然这些听起来都令人鼓舞,但也有一些负面因素需要注意)”提示下文将讨论鼻呼吸的负面因素,下文“If you introduce it without training first, it could lead to “air hunger” — a process whereby a small amount of carbon dioxide is retained (保留) at the end of each breath. This can cause discomfort and overbreathing.(如果你在未经训练的情况下直接采用,可能会导致“空气饥渴”——即每次呼吸结束时保留少量二氧化碳的过程。这会导致不适和过度呼吸)”具体说明了未经训练直接进行鼻呼吸的问题。F选项“Breathing only through the nose during exercise is a learned process.(在运动期间仅用鼻子呼吸是一个学习的过程)”暗示这需要学习,自然引出下文关于未经训练可能带来的问题,符合语境。 40.上文“As with anything, practice makes perfect.(和任何事情一样,熟能生巧)”强调练习的重要性,下文“Try and relax into the process. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The things did not go smoothly. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The judges announced the winners, and to my surprise, I won third place. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: The things did not go smoothly. As I began cooking, one of the vegetables accidentally fell to the floor. Panic rose inside me, and I felt my confidence slipping. At that time, I remembered Anna’s advice: “Stay calm and take one step at a time.” I took a deep breath, replaced the fallen vegetable, and carefully drained the pasta. Slowly, I regained my rhythm, chopping and mixing with more focus. By the time the judges tasted my dish, I felt proud of what I had done. The judges announced the winners, and to my surprise, I won third place. I stood there, too excited to believe my ears. My hands trembled with joy as I looked for Anna in the crowd. When I saw her waving and smiling at me proudly, my eyes were filled with tears. I truly owed my success to her generous help, patient guidance, and constant encouragement over the past month. This unforgettable experience taught me that true friendship can turn fear into courage and bring me unexpected achievements. 词汇激活 行为类 ①保持:stay/keep/remain ②颤抖:tremble/shake/shiver ③转变:turn/transform/shift 情绪类 ①激动:excited/thrilled ②高兴:joy/delight 【点睛】[高分句型1] Slowly, I regained my rhythm, chopping and mixing with more focus.(运用了现在分词短语作状语) [高分句型2] My hands trembled with joy as I looked for Anna in the crowd.(运用了as引导的时间状语从句) [高分句型3] This unforgettable experience taught me that true friendship can turn fear into courage and bring me unexpected achievements.(运用了that引导宾语从句) 2 / 2 2 / 2 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $听力考试正式开始。Having AT, V to watch sports games on is great. Listen to the next question. When I was Young, I used to play card games. Unlike many people, I didn't play for fun, but competed in competition. Hundreds of players go to a large building, usually a hotel, and play against each other with strict rules. I did this until I was a teenager. The competition was strong. The interesting thing about playing card games in competition is how the watching crowd affects your ability to make decisions. Card games are all about thinking about moves. This is something we all have to do everyday. The cool thing about card games is that they keep your thoughts away from everything else. IT is pure thinking, but in competitions, people make simple mistakes that would seem crazy when playing for fun. In real life, we don't get to see our decisions and the results so clearly. As with card games, however, people watching and judging your moves affects your thinking more than you can imagine. For me, that is the real lesson of card games. IT is a lesson I still remember as an adult. When I was Young, I used to play card games. Unlike many people, I didn't play for fun, but competed in competitions.
