M: My name is Adam and I'd like to welcome you to this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Let me tell you a little bit about the festival itself. When it originally started back in 1976, it was actually called the Festival of Festivals. The aim back then has not changed much. The original organizers wanted to show films from other festivals around the world. They wanted to build a cultural center for international films in Canada. The festival then grew in size and became well known among both filmmakers and film industry professionals. After that, it changed its name in 1994 to what we have now. In 2010, we moved into our own building, the TIFF Bell Lightbox, which has five floors filled with cinemas, galleries of film art, as well as a film library. The festival runs in September, but the building is open all year round. It runs workshops with local filmmakers and helps raise money for films from first-time directors. Now, let’s see some parts from all the films on offer this year.
The following events will make you want to pack your bags and join the fun.
Holi Festival
Holi turns cities into a sea of rainbow colors. People throw handfuls of colored powder at friends, family, and total strangers, while music, dancing, and laughter fill the streets. The festival celebrates the arrival of spring and the success. It happens on March 3. Wear white clothes if you don’t mind getting dirty, and prepare to be covered head-to-toe in every color imaginable.
Wife-Carrying World Championship
Competitors race through a difficult course while carrying their wife. The course includes water hazards (障碍), and sand traps that test strength, speed, and teamwork. Winners receive their wife’s weight in beer. It happens on July 3 and 4. Despite the traditional name, any couple can compete, and the event attracts teams from around the world eager to prove their carrying skills and sense of humor.
Monkey Buffet Festival
Tables piled high with fruit, vegetables, and snacks are laid out for Lopburi’s famous monkeys in a yearly feast that is both generous and makes for great photos. Hundreds of monkeys rush to the spread, creating a wild feeding competition that delights photographers and tourists. Typically held in late November, the 2026 event doesn’t have fixed dates yet.
Night of the Radishes (萝卜)
Artists in Oaxaca spend hours carving oversized radishes into well-designed historical figures and imaginary creatures, knowing their creations will dry out within a day. The time pressure makes the festival feel magical and short-lived, which is a special experience. It happens on December 23. It’s held yearly on the same date. Arrive early for the best views, because the detailed carvings are amazing but only last for a short time.

(本题10分)Saahil Mehta, a 40-year-old Indian living in the United Arab Emirates, believes in gifting his two children, Yuvraj, 8 and Alisha, 6, experiences rather than material possessions (东西) to celebrate special occasions. This could be in the form of a visit to a theme park or a staycation in a new hotel.
“As a result, their desire to buy things has gone down. This is our way of addressing their basic needs,” said Mehta.
In December 2019, Mehta took the family to visit the Indian city of Dharamshala where they spent time with poor children in a school. This was an eye-opener for Alisha and Yuvraj, as they realised that what was normal for them was a treat for those kids. “For those kids, it is a blessing (幸福) to be able to attend school. This experience taught my kids to count their blessings,” said Mehta.
During the holiday, the Mehta family gave away pens and pencils to 250 children. This helped Alisha and Yuvraj understand the cost difference in schooling. “They notice how much we spend on their education. The difference in costs helped them make a comparison,” explained Mehta.
Back home, the kids are encouraged to do basic housework like making their beds, opening curtains, etc. But Mehta never gives them money for doing those things. This way, they are taught that everyone has to chip in to keep the household running. When they do other tasks beyond the essentials, like massaging the mother’s shoulders, etc., Mehta pays them a small amount.
Pointing out a weakness in the education system, Mehta said children don’t get any experience in financial literacy (知识) until they attend university. The father is planning to introduce the concept of a family bank to his children. He also wants his children to pay attention to financial pitfalls such as spending beyond their means, too much use of credit cards, etc. He has set a plan on how money will be spent on some needs. It’s up to his children to use the money carefully.
What do we know about Mehta’s way of gifting his children?
A.It isn’t really to their liking.
B.It changes the way they buy things.
C.It allows him to connect with them.
D.It teaches them about spending money wisely.
What did Mehta’s children learn during the visit to Dharamshala?
A.They should appreciate what they have.
B.They should make friends with the poor.
C.They should cut the cost of their education.
D.They should treat different people differently.
Why did Mehta refuse to pay his children for doing housework?
A.To warn that they must work hard to make money.
B.To show that it’s what they’re supposed to do.
C.To encourage them to be selfless and careful.
D.To force them to develop a good habit.
What is the problem with the education system according to Mehta?
A.It doesn’t prepare children for money management.
B.It doesn’t suggest the importance of saving money.
C.It doesn’t encourage children to pay with cash.
D.It doesn’t teach children ways to make money.
【答案】24.D 25.A 26.B 27.A
根据第一段“Saahil Mehta, a 40-year-old Indian living in the United Arab Emirates, believes in gifting his two children, Yuvraj, 8 and Alisha, 6, experiences rather than material possessions ( 东西) to celebrate special occasions. This could be in the form of a visit to a theme park or a staycation in a new hotel.( Saahil Mehta是一位居住在阿联酋的40岁印度人,他认为在庆祝特殊场合时,给他的两个孩子,8岁的Yuvraj和6岁的Alisha,提供体验式礼物而不是物质礼物是有意义的。这可能包括去主题公园游玩或者在新酒店度过一段假期。)”以及第二段中“As a result, their desire to buy things has gone down. This is our way of addressing their basic needs(因此,他们购买东西的欲望下降了。这是我们解决他们基本需求的方式)”可知,Mehta 在庆祝一些特殊的日子时,不会送孩子们物质的东西。他可能会带孩子们去主题公园游玩或者在家附近新开的酒店度假。他的这种做法让孩子们没那么看重物质的东西,自然,他们会觉得没必要花钱去购买非必需品。故选D。
25.推理判断题。由第三段中的“This was an eye-opener for Alisha and Yuvraj, as they realised that what was normal for them was a treat for those kids. (这让Alisha和Yuvraj大开眼界,因为他们意识到,对他们来说很正常的事情,对那些孩子来说却是一种享受。)”以及本段中““For those kids, it is a blessing ( 幸福) to be able to attend school. This experience taught my kids to count their blessings,” said Mehta.(“对这些孩子来说,能够上学是一种福气。这次经历教会了我的孩子们要珍惜自己的幸福。”Mehta说)”可知,这次旅行让Mehta的孩子们意识到他们拥有很多东西,他们应该感恩。故选A。
倒数第二段中“But Mehta never gives them money for doing those things. This way, they are taught that everyone has to chip in to keep the household running. (但Mehta从不给他们钱。通过这种方式,他们被教导每个人都必须出力来维持家庭的运转。)”可知,Mehta拒绝给他的孩子做家务的钱,其目的是让孩子们意识到自己是家庭的一员,有义务去做家务。故选B。
27.推理判断题。由最后一段中的“Pointing out a weakness in the education system, Mehta said children don’t get any experience in financial literacy (知识) until they attend university. (Mehta指出了教育系统的一个弱点,他说,孩子们在上大学之前没有任何金融知识的经验。)”可知,在当前的教育体制下,孩子们从小理财知识匮乏,即教育体系不会让孩子们为理财做好准备。故选A。
(本题10分)If you’ve been to a birthday party, you’ve probably seen it: the cake comes out, the candles are lit, the room sings, and the birthday person makes a wish before blowing them out. However, this moment didn’t start as just a party tradition.
The simple act of blowing out birthday candles carries a rich history dating back thousands of years to ancient Greece, where people honored Artemis, goddess of the moon, with round honey cakes called “nouton-gonosupahon”. Historians like Marie Nicola suggest candlelight likely represented moonlight during lunar celebrations. “Fire represented the presence (存在) of gods across Indo-European cultures,” notes Nicola. As Greek customs spread, the Romans later absorbed many of these practices, introducing round cakes and candlelit offerings into birthday celebrations as their empire expanded (扩张).
By the Middle Ages, Germans developed their own candle tradition through Kinderfest, a traditional festival celebrating children. People back then believed children were easily hurt by bad spirits on their birthdays. So the candles were left to burn throughout the day until the evening meal, and their smoke was believed to have protective power and carry the child’s wishes to heaven. German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s 1799 account of his 52nd birthday cake with 50 candles marks one of the earliest documented uses matching modern practice.
The 19th century saw the tradition develop quickly. Swiss records from 1881 described cakes with candles representing each year of life — the first clear documentation of today’s celebration. Germans then brought the custom to America, where it gained new meaning: blowing out all candles in one breath ensured wishes come true.
Mass production and media promoted the tradition worldwide. By the 1920s, numbered candle sets began to be sold, while Disney’s 1931 Mickey Mouse cartoon The Birthday Party strengthened the image in popular culture. After World War Ⅱ, American consumer culture exported the candle-blowing tradition globally, through tourism, kids’ media, and big brands, from Japan adopting it in the 1950s to Hallmark cards featuring candle imagery.
What began as spiritual protection became a universal celebration of life-proving, and even ancient celebrations can develop into joyful traditions. As Nicola reflects, “That single breath blowing out candles still carries shadows of ancient prayers, now transformed into wishes for the future.”
What may early Greek candlelight stand for?
A.The beauty of natural sunlight. B.The goddess’ existence.

【答案】28.B 29.A 30.C 31.B
根据第二段中“Historians like Marie Nicola suggest candlelight likely represented moonlight during lunar celebrations. “Fire represented the presence (存在) of gods across Indo-European cultures,” notes Nicola. (历史学家如Marie Nicola认为,烛光可能代表月神庆典中的月光。Nicola指出:“火在印欧文化中代表神的存在。”)”可知,这象征着女神的存在。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“People back then believed children were easily hurt by bad spirits on their birthdays. So the candles were left to burn throughout the day until the evening meal, and their smoke was believed to have protective power and carry the child’s wishes to heaven. (那时的人们认为孩子在生日时容易被恶灵伤害。因此蜡烛会一直燃烧到晚餐时间,人们相信烟雾具有保护力量,并能将孩子的愿望带向天堂。)”可知,这种做法是为了驱赶恶灵。
30.细节理解题。根据第五段中“Mass production and media promoted the tradition worldwide. By the 1920s, numbered candle sets began to be sold, while Disney’s 1931 Mickey Mouse cartoon The Birthday Party strengthened the image in popular culture. (大规模生产和媒体推动了这一传统在全球的传播。到20世纪20年代,编号的蜡烛套装开始销售,而迪士尼1931年的米老鼠卡通片《生日派对》强化了其在流行文化中的形象。)”可知,工业生产和媒体影响帮助将这种习俗传播到全球。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“However, this moment didn’t start as just a party tradition. (然而,这一时刻并非仅仅源于派对的传统。)”和最后一段中“What began as spiritual protection became a universal celebration of life-proving, and even ancient celebrations can develop into joyful traditions. (最初作为精神保护的仪式,逐渐演变为对生命意义的普遍庆祝,即便是古老的庆典,也能发展成充满喜悦的传统。)”可知,文章首先引出生日蛋糕蜡烛这一习俗,随后按时间顺序介绍古希腊起源(第二段)、中世纪德国习俗(第三段)、19世纪发展(第四段)到20世纪全球传播(第五段),最后总结其意义,全文围绕“蛋糕蜡烛的起源与发展”展开。
(本题10分)Around 6,200 years ago, farmers living on the eastern edges of Europe, in what is now Ukraine, left their villages. They moved into an area between the modern cities of Kiev and Odessa. They built new settlements up to 20 times the size of their old ones. Scientists believe the civilization might be an early attempt at urbanization. But it isn’t clear whether the sites, or perhaps the earliest cities, were fully inhabited (居住) year round and there is heated debate over what they were for.
This puzzling culture, known as the Cucuteni-Trypillia, predates the earliest known cities in Mesopotamia. Researcher Monica Smith, the author of Cities: The First 6,000 Years, thinks the very large sites may have had something in common with Gobekli Tepe in modern Turkey. It is a building complex which is at least 10,000 years old and seems to have been a place where people gathered together periodically for special gatherings.
By contrast, scientist Johannes Muller believes the very large sites were fully occupied all year round. But the inhabitants left the lightest of footprints in the landscape, and no human remains have been found. “Not a finger, not a tooth,” says researcher Alexey Nikitin. The evidence is extremely difficult to collect because Trypillians periodically burned their houses down in a controlled way.
Uruk and Tell Brak, which arose in Mesopotamia early in the 4th millennium BCE, are usually considered the world’s first cities. Their remains point to an increased density (密度) of habitation and a hierarchical (等级制度的) social structure-two features that are considered essential to the definition of a city. But the Trypillian sites don’t meet either of those standards.
Scientists John Chapman and Bisserka Gaydarska agree, saying. “Trypillian sites were a social system based on the belief that everyone was equal.” These were cities, but of a very different kind from the slave-owning (拥有奴隶的) societies of Mesopotamia a few centuries later. And our definition of a city may need expanding, argue Chapman and Gaydarska.
What might have been the purpose of the Trypillian sites according to Monica?
A.Protecting cities. B.Attracting settlers.
C.Holding events. D.Entertaining villagers.
What is the limitation of Muller’s theory?
A.It has little clear evidence.
B.It is mainly based on unusual ideas.
C.The data he collected is not convincing.
D.The research method he used is unscientific.
What was a major difference between Trypillia and Uruk?
A.Trypillia had more houses.
B.Trypillia was densely populated.
C.Trypillia was a society full of equality.
D.Trypillia created a greater civilization.
What would be the best title for the text?
A.Prehistoric remains in Ukraine
B.A different urban life of Trypillians
C.Mesopotamia’s slave-owning societies
D.The mysterious culture that invented civilization
【答案】32.C 33.A 34.C 35.D
根据第二段“It is a building complex which is at least 10,000 years old and seems to have been a place where people gathered together periodically for special gatherings.(这是一座至少有10000年历史的建筑群,似乎是人们定期聚集举办特别聚会的地方)”可知,Monica Smith认为这些大的定居点可能是用来举行活动的。故选C项。
根据第三段“By contrast, scientist Johannes Muller believes the very large sites were fully occupied all year round. But the inhabitants left the lightest of footprints in the landscape, and no human remains have been found. “Not a finger, not a tooth,” says researcher Alexey Nikitin. The evidence is extremely difficult to collect because Trypillians periodically burned their houses down in a controlled way.(相比之下,科学家约翰内斯·穆勒认为,这些非常大的遗址常年被完全占据。但居民们在这片土地上留下了最轻的足迹,没有发现任何人类遗骸。“没有一根手指,没有一颗牙齿,”研究人员Alexey Nikitin说。证据极难收集,因为特里皮利亚人定期以可控的方式烧毁他们的房屋)”可知,Muller的观点的限制在于其缺少清晰的考古证据。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段“Their remains point to an increased density of habitation and a hierarchical social structure-two features that are considered essential to the definition of a city. But the Trypillian sites don’t meet either of those standards.(它们的遗迹表明,居住密度增加,社会结构等级化,这两个特征被认为是城市定义的基本特征。但是Trypillian遗址不符合这两个标准)”以及最后一段“Trypillian sites were a social system based on the belief that everyone was equal.( Trypillian遗址是一个基于人人平等的信念的社会体系)”可知,Trypillia与Uruk之间的主要区别是,Trypillia是一个平等的社会。故选C项。
(本题12.5分)Last night walking home after dinner, I looked up at the sky and held my breath. It was not a crazy orange sunset, but the clouds above were full in purple and gray. 36(2.5分) I have been thinking about “plant blindness” lately, a term coined by botanists meaning “the inability to see or notice the plants in one’s environment.” So I couldn’t help wondering if there’s a similar term for being “blind to clouds”.
The consequences of plant blindness are troubling, but it seems many people fail to appreciate the natural world at large. 37(2.5分) I fail to notice such beauty too. Now I live in a city where people are busy with “more important things” than observing nature, let alone the clouds. Fortunately, my city has many urban trees and greenspaces, but that helps little when we’re stuck indoors. That’s when cloudspotting comes in.
It is an ever-changing show up there. Some days are cloudless, but on days when clouds appear, what an unusual sight! 38(2.5分) They come in endless patterns, sometimes soft, sometimes covering the sky like lace. They form creatures and tell stories, all right above our heads.
39(2.5分) I mean, it’s probably good that we are not, but you know what I mean. Many studies have shown the benefits of being in nature for mind and body. Though most research centers on greenery, I believe watching clouds must also be helpful.
If nothing else, it’s a time for thinking, mindfulness and meditation. In this fast-paced world, getting lost in the clouds, even for a few minutes, is a simple and welcome relief. 40(2.5分)
A.Why aren’t we looking up all the time?

根据上文“Last night walking home after dinner, I looked up at the sky and held my breath. It was not a crazy orange sunset, but the clouds above were full in purple and gray.(昨晚晚饭后回家的路上,我抬头望向天空,屏住了呼吸。那并不是绚烂的橙红色落日,而是头顶的云层布满了紫色和灰色)”可知,空前描述天空中云是紫灰色的,D项“它们漂浮在柔和的粉红色波浪中,看起来非常壮观”承接云的外观,补充其漂浮在柔粉色浪涛中的动人状态,衔接自然。
37.根据上文“The consequences of plant blindness are troubling, but it seems many people fail to appreciate the natural world at large.(植物盲的后果令人担忧,但似乎很多人并不懂得欣赏整个自然世界)”以及后文“I fail to notice such beauty too. Now I live in a city where people are busy with “more important things” than observing nature, let alone the clouds. Fortunately, my city has many urban trees and greenspaces, but that helps little when we’re stuck indoors. That’s when cloudspotting comes in.(我也未曾留意过这样的美景。如今我生活的城市里,人们都忙于做比观察自然“更重要的事”,更不用说留意云朵了。幸运的是,我的城市有许多城市树木和绿地,但当我们被困在室内时,这些却帮不上大忙。这时,观云便派上了用场)”可知,前文指出很多人无法欣赏整个自然世界,C项“显然,忽视我们头顶的美景绝非好事”引出后文“我也常会忽略这类美景”的内容,逻辑连贯。
38.根据后文“They come in endless patterns, sometimes soft, sometimes covering the sky like lace. They form creatures and tell stories, all right above our heads.(它们以无穷无尽的图案出现,有时柔和,有时如蕾丝般覆盖天空。它们化作生物,讲述着故事,就在我头顶上方)”可知,空后介绍云的多样形态,G项“它们的形状和大小不断变化,以不同速度形成层叠状态”说明云有着不断变化的形状大小、以不同速度形成层次,和后文对云形态的描述呼应。
39.根据后文“I mean, it’s probably good that we are not, but you know what I mean. Many studies have shown the benefits of being in nature for mind and body. Though most research centers on greenery, I believe watching clouds must also be helpful.(我是说,我们不这样可能挺好,但你明白我的意思。许多研究都表明,身处大自然对身心都有益处。虽然大多数研究关注的是绿植,但我认为观察云朵也一定有帮助)”可知,后文补充“我们一直抬头可能反倒不妥,但你懂我的意思”,A项“我们为什么不一直抬头呢?”可引出该补充说明,下文的it指代“looking up all the time”。
40.根据上文“If nothing else, it’s a time for thinking, mindfulness and meditation. In this fast-paced world, getting lost in the clouds, even for a few minutes, is a simple and welcome relief.(至少,这是一个适合思考、保持觉知和冥想的时刻。

主语crops和动词plant之间为被动关系,固定结构start to do,所以此处用不定式的被动形式be planted。
形容词great后面修饰名词,important是形容词,名词形式为importance;固定搭配attach great importance to意为“高度重视”。

During her final weeks before setting off for university, Shreya was often advised by her mother that she should learn to do some cooking in case she missed the home-made food in her university. But Shreya thought learning to cook was not so important. Besides, she was not good at it so she was not active. But anyway, she should follow her mother, she thought.
Shreya went to the kitchen and watched her mother cooking Margherita, which was her favorite food. Her mother’s hands moved skillfully, measuring the ingredients (配料) with practiced ease. “The secret is to let the ingredients mix properly,” her mother explained.
That night, Shreya attempted for the first time. The kitchen smelled wonderful, but the taste was… off. She said sadly, “No dish I put together will taste as good as what my mother cooks.” She thought cooking was too hard for her and decided to give up, thinking that she could depend on dining in a canteen in university.
Then one day, she visited her grandmother, whose kadju curry always tasted so good. Besides, Shreya really enjoyed listening to her grandmother’s gentle words. Her grandmother insisted on teaching her, saying, “Cooking isn’t just about food; it is about valuable memories. Besides, kadju curry is much easier than your mother’s Margherita. I’m sure you can make it.” She handed her hand-written recipe book to Shreya so that Shreya could also take notes. While her grandmother worked, she wrote everything in the recipe book. She noticed the care in every step. The potatoes were cut just right, the yogurt added slowly, and the spices bloomed (绽放) in perfect harmony. “See, Shreya?” her grandmother said. “It’s not just about the recipe. It’s about the love you put into it.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Armed with this wisdom, Shreya tried making kadju curry. When the curry was done, she held her breath as she tasted it. It was close to the one her grandmother made. She felt very happy. As Shreya prepared to leave for university, her mother handed her a small box. Inside was her grandmother’s handwritten recipe book, now filled with Shreya’s own notes. “Take this with you,” her mother said softly. “Whenever you miss home, you can make a little piece for yourself.”
With the recipe book in hand, Shreya boarded the plane. Week in and week out, she began to miss her grandmother’s kadju curry. So she took out the recipe book and started to cook, with care and love. She made it! She shared her food with her friends. As they tasted, their faces lit up with delight. “This tastes like home” one exclaimed. Shreya smiled, realizing the truth. Cooking was about sharing love and preserving memories. As she looked through her recipe book, she knew she was carrying the heart of her family with her.

The aim back then has not changed much. The original organizers wanted to show films from other festivals around the world. They wanted to build a cultural centre for international films in canada. The festival then grew in size and became well known, both filmmakers and film industry professionals. After that, IT changed its name in nineteen ninety four to what we have now. In twenty ten, we moved into our own building, the tiff bell lights x, which has five floors filled with cinemas, galleries of film marked, as well as a film library. The festival runs in september, but the building is open all year round. IT runs workshops with local filmmakers and helps raise money for films from first time directors. Now let's see some parts from all the films on offer this year.

The festival celebrates the arrival of spring and the success. It happens on March 3.

D.The mysterious culture that invented civilization
B.Why do we miss such wonderful natural scenes around us?
C.Clearly, ignoring the beauty above us is far from a good thing.
D.They were floating in waves of soft pink, looking so impressive.
E.Watching clouds can make people forget worries and calm down.
F.Look up and always remember to live with your head in the clouds!
G.They come in shifting shapes and sizes, creating layers at different speeds.
