(本题10分)Zach, a fourth grader, sits alone in the school cafeteria. At break, he skirts the edges (边缘) of the playground, not joining in. He doesn’t play sports, so he doesn’t mix well with the other boys in his class. His mother is concerned about that.
At most schools, this child might become lonely and even sad. But at Graham Elementary School in Naperville, Illinois, teachers moved him around to different groups for class projects until he clicked with another boy.
“Suddenly, Zach had a best friend. They would hang out together, and help each other with homework,” says Zach’s mother.
Sue Clendening, the principal of Graham Elementary, believes that friendships are just as important as schoolwork. For years she had watched children get their feelings hurt at break and they couldn’t focus on their lessons afterward. Two years ago, she decided to do something about it.
Clendening surveyed the students to learn who had friends and who didn’t. She found that 30 percent of the children in fourth grade said they were often alone on the playground because no one wanted to play with them. Some students even wrote their own names on the survey under the question, “Who most needs a friend?”
Clendening shared the survey results with her teachers. She flagged lonely kids and got teachers to put them in groups of children where they might make friends. The school also started after-school clubs like book club and chess club so that children could find like-minded people. Each week, a lunch group brings together shy children and more social children to talk with a social worker.
“I believe social skills can be taught the same way math can be taught,” says Clendening. “A growing body of research points to social skills being as important as academic (学业的) skills for future success.”
Why does Zach’s mother feel concerned?
A.He has trouble making friends. B.He forms the habit of playing outside.
C.He prefers to go to school alone. D.He spends too much time on homework.
What did Clendening’s survey show?
A.Some students were left out and felt lonely.
B.Few children had an interest in school activities.
C.Most children were unhappy with their grades.
D.30 percent of students wanted to play in groups.
What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A.How the children feel about social ties. B.How the teachers share the survey results.
C.How the school draws out lonely kids. D.How the social workers help shy children.
What do Clendening’s words suggest?
A.She pays more attention to math lessons. B.Friendship building can hardly be taught.
C.Academic skills are the key to one’s success. D.She values social skills as part of education.

根据第六段“Clendening shared the survey results with her teachers. She flagged lonely kids and got teachers to put them in groups of children where they might make friends. (本题10分)You might not have noticed, but most modern hotels hide their stairways for safety, security or beauty. So people tend to be surprised when they see someone running up them. I know this because I’m a Stairs Guy now.
Still, I’m not alone. Stair running is a pastime on the rise, at least if you look at the amount of events on it. The first ever full-scale tower race, reportedly, took place at the Eiffel Tower in 1905, with about 300 runners climbing a mere two levels (729 steps) of the monument. More events followed, but it took a while before the sport spread to the UK in 1968, and the US in 1978. Today, hundreds of events across dozens of countries allow the light-limbed and big-bodied to race each other up some of the world’s most recognizable skyscrapers
“My first love is running, and I miss long-distance running races terribly, but my body can’t afford it any more after many years — so stair climbing works very well for me. There’s much less harm, but it’s still extremely challenging,” says Suzy Walsham, who competed in lots of marathons before making the move to stair running. “It’s also a very individual sport and probably two-thirds of the races are time trials — so you are racing against the building and the clock,” she explains. And, of course, it’s fast. The best runners can climb the 1,576 steps of the Empire State Building Run-Up in less than 10 minutes.
Marathon runners often struggle as stair races require lactic acid tolerance and a degree of anaerobic (无氧的) fitness (which works when you’re moving too fast to use oxygen for fuel) as well as the aerobic kind used for longer efforts. “I’ve been faster on the stairs than people who were 10 minutes faster than me over a half marathon,” says Walsham.
What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The benefits of stair running.
B.The matches of stair running.
C.The tallest buildings in the world.
D.The development of stair running.
Why did Walsham move to stair running?
A.Its cost is not high. B.It’s not very challenging.
C.It’s suitable for her body. D.Its popularity has grown.
Why is the Empire State Building Run-Up mentioned?
A.To stress the speed of stair running.
B.To praise those runners.
C.To introduce this match.
D.To show the difficulty of stair running.
What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A.Walsham needs more aerobic exercise.
B.Walsham usually runs fast in marathons.
C.Marathon runners often join stair races.
D.Marathon differs much from stair races.
【答案】28.D 29.C 30.A 31.D

根据第三段中的“but my body can’t afford it any more after many years—so stair climbing works very well for me. There’s much less harm(但是,多年后我的身体已经承受不住马拉松了——所以爬楼梯对我来说非常合适,伤害小得多)可知,沃尔沙姆转向爬楼梯运动是因为它适合自己的身体状况。故选C项。
根据第三段中的“And, of course, it’s fast. The best runners can climb the 1,576 steps of the Empire State Building Run-Up in less than 10 minutes (当然,它速度很快。最优秀的选手能在不到10分钟内爬上帝国大厦登楼赛的1576级台阶)”可知,提及帝国大厦登楼赛是为了强调爬楼梯运动的速度之快。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“Marathon runners often struggle as stair races require lactic acid tolerance and a degree of anaerobic fitness (which works when you’re moving too fast to use oxygen for fuel) as well as the aerobic kind used for longer efforts.(马拉松选手在爬楼梯比赛中往往会感到吃力,因为这类比赛既需要选手具备乳酸耐受性和一定程度的无氧耐力(指身体运动速度过快、无法利用氧气供能时所依赖的体能),还需要长距离运动所需的有氧耐力)”可知,马拉松与爬楼梯运动所需的体能素质不同,二者差异很大。故选D项。
(本题10分)An international team of researchers from the University of Sydney and the Universidad Europea in Spain discovered that sustained walking sessions offer stronger protection for heart health than fragmented (碎片化的) activity.
“There is a perception that health professionals have recommended walking 10,000 steps a day should be the goal, but this isn’t a must — that is also hard to achieve for most people nowadays. Simply adding one or two longer walks per day, each lasting at least 10 — 15minutes at a comfortable but steady pace, can have significant benefits — especially for people who don’t walk much,” explained co-lead author Dr. Matthew Ahmadi.
The study involved 33,560 adults between the ages of 40 and 79 who typically walked fewer than 8,000 steps a day and had no history of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease or cancer. Participants wore research- grade wristbands for one week to record both their step counts and how their steps were distributed throughout the day. Researchers followed their health outcomes for about eight years, and found striking differences in cardiovascular risk between those who walked in short versus longer sessions.
People who walked continuously for 10 — 15 minutes daily had only a 4 percent chance of experiencing cardiovascular events, compared to a 13 percent risk among those who walked continuously for just 5 minutes a day. The benefits were greatest for the least active individuals, particularly those taking 5,000 steps or fewer. Within this group, the risk of developing cardiovascular disease fell from 15 percent among short walkers to 7 percent among those who walked up to15 minutes at a time.
Senior Professor Emmanuel Stamakis noted, “We tend to place all the emphasis on the number of steps or the total amount of walking but overlook the crucial role of patterns, for example how walking is done. This study shows that even people who are very physically inactive can maximize their heart health benefit by walking for longer at a time, preferably for at least 10 — 15 minutes, when possible. ”
Which of the following does Dr. Matthew Ahmadi consider challenging?
A.Walking at a comfortable but steady pace.
B.Reaching the goal of walking 10,000 steps a day.
C.Placing an emphasis on sustained walking sessions.
D.Spending at least ten minutes on a walking session.
Why were participants asked to wear wristbands?
A.To collect their walking data. B.To monitor their heart health.
C.To remind them to walk more. D.To track suitable walking routes.
How is paragraph 4 mainly developed?
A.By quoting experts. B.By making comparisons.
C.By following time order. D.By listing fictional examples.
What does Emmanuel Stamakis probably suggest inactive people do?
A.Adjust their walking patterns. B.Shorten their walking time slowly.
C.Prioritize daily fragmented activity. D.Maximize the total amount of walking.

根据第三段中的“Participants wore research-grade wristbands for one week to record both their step counts and how their steps were distributed throughout the day. (参与者佩戴研究级手环一周,以记录他们的步数以及这些步数在一天中的分布情况)”可知,参与者佩戴手环是为了收集他们的步行相关数据。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“People who walked continuously for 10 — 15 minutes daily had only a 4 percent chance of experiencing cardiovascular events, compared to a 13 percent risk among those who walked continuously for just 5 minutes a day. (每天持续步行10-15分钟的人,发生心血管事件的概率仅为4%,而每天仅持续步行5分钟的人,这一风险为13%)”以及“Within this group, the risk of developing cardiovascular disease fell from 15 percent among short walkers to 7 percent among those who walked up to15 minutes at a time. (在这一群体中,心血管疾病的患病风险从短时间步行者的15%降至每次步行15分钟者的7%)”可知,第四段主要是通过对比不同持续步行时长人群的心血管风险数据来展开的。故选B项。
35.推理判断题。根据第五段中的“We tend to place all the emphasis on the number of steps or the total amount of walking but overlook the crucial role of patterns, for example how walking is done. This study shows that even people who are very physically inactive can maximize their heart health benefit by walking for longer at a time, preferably for at least 10 — 15 minutes, when possible. (我们往往只关注步数或步行总时长,却忽视了步行模式的关键作用,比如步行的方式。这项研究表明,即使是运动量非常少的人,也可以通过延长单次步行时间来最大化心脏健康益处,尽可能保证每次至少10-15分钟)”可知,伊曼纽尔·斯塔马基斯教授可能建议缺乏运动的人调整步行模式。故选A项。

故填behavior/behaviour。

The athletic director at a high school in northern Utah believed that involving students with physical or mental challenges in regular classes would benefit the entire school community. To ensure the success of this special plan, he created a mentor (导师) program, pairing each special-needs student with a peer (同伴) for guidance and support.
When looking for mentors, the director immediately thought of the school’s leaders, particularly the football team captain, John. John was a tall, strong, and intensely focused athlete — seemingly the opposite of the patient, caring type ideal for such a role. When the director came to him with the proposal, John turned it down. He insisted that mentoring “wasn’t his thing” and argued that his packed schedule of practices and games left him no time.
However, the athletic director saw a deeper opportunity. He explained to John that true leadership extended far beyond the football field. He emphasized that this experience would enhance personal growth, cultivate patience and empathy — qualities that would eventually make him a better captain and person. After a moment of hesitation, John nodded slowly. “Alright,” he said, though his reluctance (不情愿) was clear.
John was paired with Randy, a cheerful young man with Down syndrome From the very first meeting, John was reluctant and visibly annoyed. He made little effort to hide his discomfort. Sometimes, he pretended not to hear Randy’s friendly questions or enthusiastic comments about the school. Other times, he would make brief, awkward excuses about needing to be somewhere else, hoping Randy would leave him alone. John avoided making eye contact, his body language screaming a desire to be anywhere else. He saw the mentorship as a forced chore, an obstacle to his life, and he couldn’t imagine how this pairing could possibly work out.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
One afternoon, John fell in the hallway.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Encouraged by Randy’s actions, John felt the urge to do more.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
One afternoon, John fell in the hallway. Sharp pain shot through his ankle, making it hard for him to stand up. Just as he struggled to rise, Randy rushed over without delay. He knelt beside John, eyes full of concern. “Are you okay?” he asked. The pure kindness in Randy’s act struck John deeply. Watching Randy’s sincere concern, John felt a wave of shame wash over him. He had treated Randy coldly before, yet Randy showed him genuine kindness without complaint. It suddenly dawned on John what the mentorship really meant.
Encouraged by Randy’s actions, John felt the urge to do more. He stopped regarding the task as a boring chore. Instead, he began to devote time to staying with Randy patiently. He listened attentively to Randy’s enthusiastic thoughts about school and took the initiative to chat with him. Gradually, genuine friendship developed between them. John learned to be more patient and empathetic, exactly the qualities the athletic director had mentioned. He came to realize true leadership lay not only in victories on the football field but also in caring for people around him.
