M: Thank you so much. It truly feels wonderful to be back at university again. What I want to share with you today is simple: education matters greatly. When I first came to the US, I only planned to work as a repairman. At that time, I couldn’t read newspapers, nor could I understand news programs or movies on TV. That was when I decided to attend city college and take English courses for international students. I was really proud to be a college student, because no one in my family had ever studied at a college. In my hometown, most people finish school at the age of fifteen and then learn a trade. I followed the same path. At fifteen, I learned the skills to become a repairman, and I moved to America one year later. Fortunately, I met an excellent teacher who encouraged me to take math, business and history courses. Later, I became a full-time college student. Looking back now, I feel extremely grateful, for I can never tell where life would lead me if I hadn’t attended the college.
Before I knew it, I began to earn money simply because I was really good at math. The ability to solve problems with math is far more important than I once thought. I realized this especially after I started my own business, which is now doing very well.

(本题7.5分)Make a Little Time for Some MimeIntroduction
Mime Time is a traditional presentation of classical and modern mime techniques. It is designed to introduce your students to an art form that has been practised for centuries throughout the world. Your students will be totally absorbed as our performer presents several humorous short “silent stories” which may include many familiar illusions such as walls, ropes, ladders and everybody’s favorite — walking against the wind. The performer may even play different characters within the same story! Each program is followed by a short question-and-answer session.
There is also an optional all-day program, in which the students receive instruction in small groups on mime techniques. These “funshops” exercise both the mind and the body.

(本题10分)Elizabeth Keyton, originally from Georgia, the USA, married Arjun, a Malayali. She wanted to learn his mother tongue to strengthen their family bond. In the process, she created a web page called “Elikutty” through which she now teaches Malayalam to thousands of people.
“I always loved hearing people speak different languages, but when my mother from Serbia spoke Serbian at home, my father showed no interest in learning it, leaving frequent misunderstanding and communicating problems. That’s when I decided that if I met someone from a different culture, I would try to learn his language, which would be good for us and our family,” says Elizabeth.
“So when my relationship with Arjun started looking serious because of difficulties in communicating, I decided to learn Malayalam. However, I found that there weren’t enough resources to learn the language. Most books available were outdated or made for children. A small amount of material was often too difficult for casual language learners like me,” says the 35-year-old. “Later, I struggled to find a teacher suited to my needs and some grammar resources online.”
As an English teacher, Elizabeth used her teaching skills to learn Malayalam. She wrote notes and made doodles (涂鸦) to learn the letters. “For me, the best way to learn is by explaining it to someone else, so I made a web page in 2018 to share my notes and small drawings,” she says. Starting out with 1,000 followers in 2018, her web page has over 70,000 followers today. She is pleased to make learning Malayalam fun and easy.
“I have seen what happens when languages are ignored in my own house. My brother doesn’t know Serbian, which means his family won’t. It’s important to know English as it is a global language and helps when you go abroad, but the same respect should be given to native languages. They are the true way to a person’s heart,” says Elizabeth.
24.(2.5分)Why did Elizabeth decide to learn Malayalam?
A.To build a foundation for her career.
B.To improve her relationship with Arjun.
C.To better communicate with her mother.
D.To satisfy her interest in foreign languages.
25.(2.5分)What difficulty did Elizabeth meet during her learning?
A.Disapproval from her husband.
B.Failure to find a native partner.
C.Lack of suitable learning resources.
D.Inability to find a professional teacher.
26.(2.5分)What was Elizabeth’s web page used to do at first?
A.Assist her in self-study.
B.Collect learning tips.
C.Share her life in Malaya.
D.Teach foreigners Malayalam.
27.(2.5分)What is Elizabeth’s opinion on language learning?
A.Using social media as the primary tool.
B.Respecting our inner thinking at all times.
C.Always putting the family’s common language first.
D.Treating universal languages and native languages equally.
【答案】24.B 25.C 26.A 27.D
【导语】文章主要讲述了来自美国的Elizabeth Keyton为加强与丈夫的家庭纽带而学习马拉雅拉姆语,并创建网页分享学习笔记,最终帮助数千人学习该语言的经历。
【详解】24.细节理解题。根据第一段第二句“She wanted to learn his mother tongue to strengthen their family bond. (她想学习他的母语以加强他们的家庭纽带。)”以及第三段第一句“So when my relationship with Arjun started looking serious because of difficulties in communicating, I decided to learn Malayalam. (因此,我和Arjun的关系开始步入正式阶段,但我们之间存在沟通障碍,于是我决定学习马拉雅拉姆语。)”可知,Elizabeth学习马拉雅拉姆语的直接目的是改善与丈夫Arjun的关系。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段第二、三、四句““However, I found that there weren’t enough resources to learn the language. Most books available were outdated or made for children. A small amount of material was often too difficult for casual language learners like me,” says the 35-year-old. (这位35岁的女士说,“然而,我发现没有足够的学习资源。大多数现有书籍要么过时,要么是给儿童编写的。少量材料对于像我这样的非正式语言学习者来说往往太难了。”)”可知,Elizabeth在学习过程中遇到的困难是缺乏适合的学习资源。
26.细节理解题。根据第四段第三句““For me, the best way to learn is by explaining it to someone else, so I made a web page in 2018 to share my notes and small drawings,” she says. (她说,“对我来说,最好的学习方式是向他人解释,所以我在2018年创建了一个网页来分享我的笔记和小绘画。”)”可知,Elizabeth最初创建网页是为了通过分享笔记来辅助自己的学习,并非为了收集学习技巧、分享生活或专门教外国人马拉雅拉姆语。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段最后两句“It’s important to know English as it is a global language and helps when you go abroad, but the same respect should be given to native languages. They are the true way to a person’s heart,” says Elizabeth. (Elizabeth说,“了解英语很重要,因为它是一门全球性语言,在你出国时有所帮助,但母语也应得到同样的尊重。它们是通往一个人内心的真正途径。”)”可知,Elizabeth认为全球性语言(如英语)和母语都应受到同等重视。
(本题10分)A new research confirmed that Shakespeare truly boosts children’s reading and writing skills and emotional intelligence provided that his works are acted out. “What we’ve learned is that the techniques actors use have a powerful effect on how children handle language and how they perceive themselves,” said Siri Lee of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
The randomized control trial involved hundreds of year 5 pupils — aged nine and ten — at 45 primary schools that had not been “previously exposed to RSC teaching approach.” They were split into target and control groups and asked to write, for example, a message in a bottle as Ferdinand after the shipwreck in The Tempest. The target group was given a 30-minute drama-based activity to accompany the passage.
The results showed that the target group of pupils drew on a wider vocabulary, used words “classed as more complicated or rarer”, and wrote at greater length. They also “appear to be more comfortable writing in role. While control pupils imagine how they themselves would react to being shipwrecked, target children put themselves in the shoes of a literary character and express the character’s emotion”. The Time to Act study also found that while control pupils relied on “deserted island conventions” such as palm trees, target pupils were “more expansive giving a broader picture of the sky, the sea and the atmospheric conditions.”
Siri Lee said she had been most surprised by the “emotional literacy that was evident in the target children’s writing” and that they were “more resilient in their writing, more hopeful”. She added: “The emotional understanding was very evident and it is probably related to the rehearsal room process where you are used to trying to imagine your way through. They were comfortable in describing different emotional states and part of what you do in drama is put yourself in different shoes.” The study showed the importance of embedding arts in education, she said.
But could the results be replicated with any old dramatist? Siri Lee said more research would be needed but suggested that the grammar school boy’s use of 20,000 words, compared with the everyday 2,000 words, gave a “massive expansion of language into children’s lives”, which was combined with children “using their whole bodies to bring words to life”.
28.(2.5分)Why were the pupils divided into two groups?
A.To illustrate the popularity of RSC. B.To prove the advantage of acting-out.
C.To measure their writing speed. D.To see their understandings of a drama.
29.(2.5分)What did control pupils’ reliance on “deserted island conventions” show?
A.Their preference for big words. B.Their casual style of writing.
C.Their weakness in description. D.Their ignorance of small details.
30.(2.5分)What can be inferred about Shakespeare’s use of words?
A.It overshadows that of other dramatists. B.It is overly challenging to students.
C.It enriches children’s daily vocabulary. D.It is definitely scholarship-oriented.
31.(2.5分)What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Acting Out Shakespeare: A Stone, Two Birds B.Follow in Shakespeare’s Footsteps
C.Shakespeare: Language Strugglers’ Cure-all D.Shakespeare: Easier Said Than Done
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.C 31.A
【导语】文章主要介绍了一项新研究证实通过戏剧表演演绎莎士比亚作品,能够有效提升孩子读写能力与情商,并借助分组对照试验的数据佐证该结论,同时探讨了莎士比亚丰富的词汇量对孩子语言学习的独特作用。
【详解】28.推理判断题。根据原文第一段“New research confirmed that Shakespeare truly boosts children’s reading and writing skills and emotional intelligence provided that his works are acted out.(新研究证实:倘若通过戏剧表演的形式演绎莎士比亚的作品,就能切实提升孩子们的读写能力与情商。)”及第二段“They were split into target and control groups and asked to write, for example, a message in a bottle as Ferdinand after the shipwreck in The Tempest. The target group was given a 30-minute drama-based activity to accompany the passage.(他们被分成实验组和对照组,比如要求学生扮演《暴风雨》中遭遇海难后的费迪南德写一封漂流瓶信件,实验组会配合课文开展三十分钟戏剧活动。)”可知,分组是为了对比验证实景演绎戏剧的好处。
29.细节理解题。根据原文第三段“The Time to Act study also found that while control pupils relied on “deserted island conventions” such as palm trees, target pupils were “more expansive giving a broader picture of the sky, the sea and the atmospheric conditions.”(这项名为“行动时刻”的研究还发现,对照组学生只会套用棕榈树这类荒岛写作套路,实验组学生描写内容更丰富,能细致描绘天空、大海和环境氛围。)”可知,对照组拘泥固定套路,体现出他们在细节描写方面的短板。
30.推理判断题。根据原文最后一段“Siri Lee said more research would be needed but suggested that the grammar school boy’s use of 20,000 words, compared with the everyday 2,000 words, gave a “massive expansion of language into children’s lives”, which was combined with children “using their whole bodies to bring words to life”.(Siri Lee表示还需要更多研究,但提出莎士比亚拥有两万个词汇,远超日常两千常用词,极大拓展了孩子接触到的语言内容,还能配合肢体表演活化文字。)”可知,莎士比亚的用词丰富了孩子们的日常词汇储备。
31.主旨大意题。根据原文第一段“New research confirmed that Shakespeare truly boosts children’s reading and writing skills and emotional intelligence provided that his works are acted out.(一项新研究证实,如果用表演形式演绎莎士比亚作品,能切实提升孩子的读写能力与情商。)”及全文内容可知,文章围绕表演莎翁作品同时提升读写与情商展开,最佳标题为“表演莎士比亚:一举两得” 。
(本题10分)Students’ comprehension of words in a foreign language improves if teachers pair each word with a gesture, researchers at the University of Illinois found.
The aim of the study was to compare participants’ comprehension of vocabulary words in Chinese when they were taught new words paired with standard or arbitrary (任意的) gestures and without gestures.
Standard gestures are representational and tend to be consistent across languages, such as those commonly used to represent drinking or talking on the telephone, said Kiel Christianson, an author of the study. Arbitrary gestures are meaningless motions that are made up by the speaker and bear no obvious connection to a particular word.
The 30 student participants watched as the instructor introduced 18 new words, presenting them to the students in groups of six — six words each accompanied by arbitrary gestures, standard gestures and without gestures. Instructors and students repeated both the Chinese word and its English translation twice.
After two instructional sessions, the students took a multiple-choice test, with the instructor presenting the words and associated gestures in random order and the students choosing the English translation of each word from a list of four words. When the vocabulary words were presented with standard or random gestures, students’ ability to recall the words’ meanings was 8.10 percent better than with words that were presented without gestures, the researchers found. They also found that gestures do not need to be obviously specific to facilitate learning.
Christianson and his co-authors assumed that simply watching the instructor move their hands while presenting a word enabled students to create a motion-related image of that word in their mind. “Visualizing a gesture with each word creates multiple pathways into the meaning of new words and helps students remember them better,” Christianson said.
However, the gestural advantage in learning declined when students were introduced to more than about 10 — 12 words at a time, the researchers found. “This suggests that instructors should introduce new vocabulary words in small batches (批),” Christianson said. “That’s a very practical application.”
32.(2.5分)What do we know about standard gestures?
A.They have no obvious meaning.
B.They are specific to particular cultures.
C.They are made up by language experts.
D.They share similar forms in various languages.
33.(2.5分)What were the students asked to do following the second instruction?
A.Recall the meanings of the words.
B.Pair the words with relevant gestures.
C.Speak out the words based on gestures.
D.Repeat the gestures the instructor used.
34.(2.5分)What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A.A suggestion for future studies.
B.A major limitation of the study.
C.An explanation of the research method.
D.A possible reason for the study findings.
35.(2.5分)What principle would Christianson recommend while applying gesture learning?
A.Limit input per session. B.Review in small batches.
C.Practice makes perfect. D.Precise matching is key.
【答案】32.D 33.A 34.D 35.A
【导语】这是一篇说明文。介绍了伊利诺伊大学关于将手势与外语单词配对可提升学生单词理解的研究,包括研究目的、手势类型、实验过程及发现。
【详解】32.细节理解题。根据第三段“Standard gestures are representational and tend to be consistent across languages, such as those commonly used to represent drinking or talking on the telephone, said Kiel Christianson, an author of the study. (该研究的作者Kiel Christianson说,标准手势具有代表性,在不同语言中往往是一致的,比如通常用来表示喝东西或打电话的手势)”可知,标准手势在不同语言中形式相似。故选D项。
33.细节理解题。根据第五段“After two instructional sessions, the students took a multiple-choice test, with the instructor presenting the words and associated gestures in random order and the students choosing the English translation of each word from a list of four words. (在两次教学之后,学生们参加了一次选择题测试,教师以随机顺序呈现单词和相关手势,学生们从四个单词的列表中选择每个单词的英文翻译)”可知,学生需根据单词及对应手势回忆词义。故选A项。
34.主旨大意题。根据第六段“Christianson and his co-authors assumed that simply watching the instructor move their hands while presenting a word enabled students to create a motion-related image of that word in their mind. “Visualizing a gesture with each word creates multiple pathways into the meaning of new words and helps students remember them better,” Christianson said. (Christianson和他的合著者认为,学生在看到教师展示单词时做手势,就能在脑海中形成与该单词相关的动作意象。他表示:“将每个单词与手势可视化,能为新单词的词义建立多种记忆路径,帮助学生更好地记住单词。”)”可知,本段解释了“手势能提升单词理解”这一研究结果的背后原因。故选D项。
35.细节理解题。根据最后一段“However, the gestural advantage in learning declined when students were introduced to more than about10-12 words at a time, the researchers found. “This suggests that instructors should introduce new vocabulary words in small batches (批),” Christianson said. “That’s a very practical application.” (然而,研究人员发现,当学生一次学习10-12个单词以上时,手势在学习中的优势就会减弱。Christianson说:“这表明教师应该小批量地介绍新词汇,这是一个非常实际的应用。”)”可知,Christianson建议每次学习的单词量要有限制。故选A项。

三、完形填空
(本题15分)When I first set foot on Mexican soil, I spoke Spanish well. So when I asked a local ice-cream seller for an ice-cream, and he said “ahorita,” which directly translates to “right now”, I took him at his word, believing that its arrival was 41 .
I sat near his shop and waited. Half an hour passed and still no ice-cream arrived, so I asked again about it, “Ahorita,” he told me again. His face was a mix of 42 and maybe even embarrassment.
I was 43 . Waiting longer wasn’t pleasant, but I felt it was impolite to walk away, especially if the ice-cream was now being 44 just for me. But finally, after waiting too long, I made a (an) 45 for the nearest bus to take me home. As I left, I 46 at my wrist and shrugged to the ice-cream seller. 47 I couldn’t wait any longer and it really wasn’t my fault. His face was, once again, one of the total confusion.
This experience 48 from my memory until years later when I came back to live in Mexico. I discovered that understanding “ahorita” took not a fluency in the language, but rather a(n) 49 in the culture. When someone from Mexico says “ahorita,” it should almost never be taken 50 ; its meaning changes greatly with 51 . As a linguist told me, “Ahorita could mean tomorrow, in an hour, within five years or never.” It is even used as a polite way of saying “no, thanks” when 52 an offer.
Difficulty in explaining what I have come to call “Ahorita Time” is a 53 of different cultural understandings of time. Since I moved to Mexico, my attitude towards time has changed dramatically. I don’t worry so much about being late; I am generally still on time for 54 , but when I’m not, I don’t feel 55 . Ironically, it would seem that “Ahorita Time,” has actually allowed me to live far more in the “right now” than I ever did before.

I’m glad to know you’re interested in the Labor Practice Week we held last week. Here are some details.
Over the week, we took part in various activities, such as planting trees on campus, cleaning up the nearby community park, and learning basic gardening skills from a local farmer. He showed us how to prepare the soil, press in the seeds and water plants without damaging the roots. It’s tiring but rewarding.
These hands-on tasks helped us realize the value of labor and the importance of teamwork. Through these experiences, I came to understand that every small effort counts in making our environment better.
Hope this gives you a clear picture. Looking forward to hearing from you.

六、书面表达
67.(本题25分)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had always been weak in English writing. My articles were filled with simple sentences and all kinds of grammar mistakes, so I often got low marks in every English exam. Every time the teacher handed out exam papers, I would quickly cover my paper, afraid that my classmates would see my terrible scores. Watching them get high marks without much effort, I felt deeply upset and helpless. Little by little, I even made up my mind to give up English writing completely.
Luckily, my English teacher soon noticed my bad mood. Instead of blaming me for my poor performance, she stayed after class and talked with me patiently. She told me that valuable progress never comes in a short time, and sticking to daily practice is the most useful way to get through all kinds of difficulties. Her warm words brought me a little hope again.
Encouraged by what she said, I decided to make a real change. I bought a thick notebook to write down beautiful sentences and useful expressions from Reader’s Digest every day. After finishing my schoolwork, I rewrote my compositions again and again. Each afternoon after class, I went to her office and handed my revised articles to her to correct all my mistakes. I reviewed these marked points every night to avoid making the same errors next time.
However, two months of steady hard work did not bring me better results. Staring at the disappointing paper covered with red lines, I lost all my confidence once more. I could not help wondering if all my time and effort meant nothing at all.

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1
One afternoon, I wandered into my teacher’s office with tears welling up in my eyes. I told her honestly that I planned to give up English writing, because my daily practice failed to bring satisfying scores and left me discouraged. My teacher comforted me patiently and pointed out my silent progress in grammar and expression that I had ignored. Encouraged by her warm words, I adjusted my study methods. I sorted out all my writing mistakes, memorized useful sentences, and revised my old compositions over and over again. I kept practicing steadily, hoping to make real progress step by step.Paragraph 2
Months later, the city-wide English examination arrived. Sitting in the exam room, I felt a mix of nervousness and expectation. When facing the writing task, I felt worried at first, fearing I might make stupid mistakes. However, all the skills and expressions I had practiced hard came to my mind naturally. I organized my ideas logically, finished the composition smoothly and checked every sentence carefully. After the exam, I felt unusually peaceful and confident. When the results came out, I was delighted to find my writing score improved greatly. I learned that constant perseverance is the key to progress, and no sincere effort will ever go to waste.

IT truly feels wonderful to be back at university again. What I want to share with you today is simple education matters greatly. When I first came to the U. S, I only plan to work as a repairman. At that time, I couldn't read newspapers, nor could I understand news programs or movies on T. V. That was when I decided to attend city college and take english courses for international students. I was really proud to be a college student because no one in my family had ever studied at a college in my hometown. Most people finish school at the age of fifteen and then learn a trade.

(本题12.5分)High school students have a lot of choices for what they can do once the school day ends: they can study, do homework, participate in a sport, watch TV, work at a job, play video games, attend a club meeting and more. 36(2.5分) Spending your time after school wisely can help you become better prepared for college and your future.
Students who participate in after-school activities often perform better in class compared to those who don’t. A study conducted in 2021 showed that high school students attending after-school programmes are less likely to drop out, have better attendance records, and have a more positive attitude towards school. They also often have an increase in the standardized test scores. 37(2.5分)
After-school activities can also increase your chances of being accepted into college because you can include your participation on your college applications. 38(2.5分) Participating in an after-school activity is a great way to show your interests and academic motivation (学术动力).
39(2.5分) For example, if you are interested in being a doctor, you can be a part of your school’s Science Olympiad team or volunteer at a hospital. You can find one that matches your interests from many after-school activities available, and learn some skills through practice.
Most importantly, participating in after-school activities gives you an opportunity to spend time with your friends as well as make new ones. Your participation often means you have a shared interest, such as volunteering or playing a sport. 40(2.5分)
A.These activities are constructive and meaningful.
B.Colleges love to see students who are active in activities.
C.Moreover, you can realize your dreams through these activities.
D.Besides, you will learn new skills from after-school activities.
E.So participating in an after-school programme can raise your grades.
F.Some of these activities are more useful and productive than others.
G.That can make it easier to be friends because you have something in common.
