(本题10分)Jesse Barber, a documentary photographer and lifelong resident (居民) of Western North Carolina, brings a deeply personal camera to cover (报导) the destruction of Hurricane Helene. As a graduate of Appalachian State University in Documentary and Appalachian Studies, Barber focuses on capturing rural life in his beloved mountains. However, Helene met an unexpected challenge.
“The photos of destruction are endless, and are going to continue to be endless,” he said. Barber drove over 1,000 miles in the region over three days last week, to Brevard and beyond, finding places to shoot, talking with rescue workers and residents. But as a local, Barber brought a different focus than many journalists and photographers covering the storm’s destruction and the beginnings of recovery. “I started to feel the outsider in me becomes the insider,” he says.
His copious knowledge of the conditions in the area proved crucial. When an editor suggested staying in an Asheville hotel, Barber knew it was impossible. Leaving his own flooding basement to the outside, he found no more gas or food, proving that the situation was far worse than editors understood. At a Marion gas station, he photographed a man whose house was half-destroyed, a pure (纯粹的) introduction to the degree of personal loss.
Barber’s practice prioritized (优先) human connection over taking quick disaster photos. “I’m trying to experience and listen,” he says, valuing the sense of place and people. While documenting shocking geological changes, he also sought resilience (韧性) and hope among the disaster. He met tired and hungry residents keeping positive attitudes, like a Bat Cave-born volunteer firefighter in Chimney Rock who insisted, “We’ll be all right... Things will be a little different but we’ll still be here.”
As national attention changes, Barber will remain focused on Appalachian. His rapid action during Hurricane Helene “confirmed my investment in staying rooted in place”, he says, keeping his promise to live in Western North Carolina over larger art centers. “I do feel like my work and my instruction are worthwhile. I just want to do my people good.”
24.(2.5分)What prepared Barber to cover Hurricane Helene?
A.His studies in big cities. B.His local life experience.
C.Special disaster training. D.Work with national media.
25.(2.5分)What does the underlined word “copious” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Limited. B.Broad. C.Backward. D.Further.
26.(2.5分)What makes Barber’s photos different from others?
A.Centering on destruction. B.Ignoring people’s suffering.
C.Focusing on people’s spirit. D.Avoiding geological change.
27.(2.5分)What does Barber’s story show?
A.Social responsibilities matter. B.Disaster shots deliver impact.
C.Big cities offer better growth. D.Teamwork is crucial in media.
(本题10分)The Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park is located in the northern foothills of the Qilian Mountains in Gansu Province, China. The park features a spectacular Danxia landform that covers about 510 square kilometers. These unique formations are a masterpiece of nature. The colorful mountain ridges are just like an overturned palette from heaven.
★Zhangye’s Danxia landscape features lots of steep red cliffs, most of which are several hundred meters high, with multicolored ridges of weathered strata stretching to the horizon. These formations vary from smooth to jagged, standing in stark contrast against the plains’ green or gray hues, presenting a spectacle that is both majestic and breathtaking.
Across the Danxia landscape zone, a kaleidoscope (万花筒) of red rocky outcrops assumes wondrous shapes like castles, cones, towers, as well as human and animal figures. When their peaks emerge through mist and clouds, they create a mirage-like vista of fantastical mountains and pavilions.
Why does the Zhangye Danxia landscape have colorful layers? About 100 million years ago, the area was part of an inland basin. Due to tectonic plate collision (碰撞) , the land folded and formed mountains, and lifted above sea level. Red sandstone was deposited when rivers formed in the area. When the ground sank into a basin, mudstone was deposited (沉积) on the red sandstone. During different periods, varying sedimentary rocks were formed that contained different amounts of iron compounds (镁铁化合物) in the mud and stone. This is why the layers have different colors.
Because of the changes in sedimentary (沉淀的) environments, the sedimentary layers formed have different colors, such as red, purplish red, yellowish green, grayish green, and gray. Every layer took thousands of years to form. The movement of the Himalayas lifted the area higher and rivers formed. The river erosion formed gorges, and the early Danxia landscape was created. After further geological periods, river erosion and wind erosion formed the colorful layers we see today.
The Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park is close to the city of Zhangye-about 50 minutes west by car, in northwestern China’s Gansu Province. Alternatively, visitors can take a bus from Zhangye City Bus Station directly to the park.
28.(2.5分)What do we know from the Danxia landscape zone in Zhangye?
A.The scenery is magnificent as the cliffs stand high into the sky.
B.Red is the only color shown in this unique geological park.
C.These formations take on many vivid shapes.

30.(2.5分)What can best replace the underlined word “erosion” in the passage?
A.Wearing away. B.Breaking down. C.Rising above. D.Moving through.

(本题10分)U.S. weather experts have confirmed that the forecasted El Niño (厄尔尼诺) has officially begun. They warn this could be the most powerful this century, causing extreme weather like droughts and floods that may harm farming and food supplies.
El Niño is a natural phenomenon that happens again and again, moving warm air and water across the tropical Pacific. Normally, trade winds blow east to west, pushing warm water toward Asia. During El Niño, these winds weaken or the other way round, allowing warm water to move back toward the Americas. This cycle occurs every two to seven years and usually peaks around December or January. The name — Spanish for “little boy” — was named by fishermen who noticed warmer waters near Christmas.
History offers serious lessons. In 1877, a strong El Niño caused terrible droughts across Asia, Brazil, and northern Africa, leading to famines (饥荒) that killed over 50 million people. The 2023-2024 El Niño — among the five strongest — made 2024 the hottest year and worsened food shortages in southern Africa, where farmers depend on rainfall.
This year, major growing areas are at risk. India may face a weaker monsoon, reducing rice production. Southern Africa could see drier conditions threatening corn, while the southern U.S. may experience flooding that disrupts farming.
Scientists are still studying how this El Niño will interact with climate change. Some governments have plans like planting earlier or importing more, but these may not protect small farmers who depend on selling crops. As one expert notes, policies may ensure “enough food,” but they won’t take care of the growers. The final outcome is unclear, but in a warming world, extreme weather is becoming more serious and likely.
32.(2.5分)What is the concern of US experts about El Niño?
A.It may be strongest this century. B.It surely causes floods worldwide.
C.It has ended very recently. D.It warms only Pacific waters.
33.(2.5分)What can we learn about El Niño in Paragraph 2?
A.It is named after a fisherman. B.It is caused by human activities.

34.(2.5分)What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The worst El Niño in history. B.A new high temperature record.
C.El Niño disasters throughout history. D.The food shortage in southern Africa.
35.(2.5分)What can be inferred about small farmers?
A.They will still face financial difficulties. B.They will get enough help.
C.They will be the only group affected. D.They will try to avoid weather damage.

Unexpected Hike
It was a sunny weekend, and a group of high-school students from Class 10, led by their enthusiastic teacher Mr. Brown, set out for a hiking trip in the nearby mountains. Among them were Alex, a curious and adventurous boy, and his reserved but intelligent classmate, Maya. Everyone was in high spirits, chatting and laughing as they walked along the well-marked trail.
As they hiked deeper into the mountains, the beautiful scenery around them was breathtaking. Lush green trees towered above, and colorful wildflowers dotted the path. The students stopped occasionally to take pictures, trying to capture the beauty of nature. Alex, always eager to explore, would run ahead a little, then wait impatiently for the rest of the group.
After a few hours of hiking, they reached a fork in the trail. Mr. Brown, checking the map, told the students that the left path would lead them to a magnificent waterfall, while the right one would take them back to the starting point. Most of the students voted to go left and see the waterfall. However, Maya, who had been quietly observing the weather, noticed some dark clouds gathering in the distance. She worried that a storm might be approaching and suggested they return. But her voice was drowned out by the excited chatter of her classmates, and they decided to continue on the left path.
As they got closer to the waterfall, the sound of rushing water grew louder. Just as they were about to reach their destination, large raindrops began to fall. In no time, it turned into a heavy downpour. The path, which was muddy to begin with, became slippery and dangerous. The students huddled together, not knowing what to do next. Mr. Brown tried to keep everyone calm, but the situation was getting out of control.

W: Are Dorian's winds still so powerful there?
M: Things haven't got much better. By Tuesday, Dorian's winds had slowed, making it a still very dangerous Category 2 hurricane with wind speeds recorded at 177 kilometers an hour. But the center of the hurricane has not moved too far from the Bahamas.
W: I guess we can donate some money and call on others in our class to donate to do that.

【原文】
W: Thanks for coming to this art gallery opening. As you can see, all the art here has been painted and created to represent and celebrate local natural beauty. We come from such a beautiful place, so it is very important to realize how at risk it is. I’m not saying this to scare anyone, but to remind us how much we love our planet and how important it is to protect what we love.
Here, you’ll see images of hills on fire, powerful typhoons, and rising floods. Within our coastal city, the biggest danger is sea-level rise. Many local artists have painted our streets and train stations underwater to show how real these risks are.
Before we open the room to guests, I want to share the origin of this show. The initial idea was not fundraising or even climate messaging. We simply wanted to expand art classes in our community centers. That modest goal grew into this exhibition as students, teachers, and neighbors offered their talent, stories, and support.
Because of everyone of you, more workshops will launch next month. To thank you for helping us reach this moment, I’d like to invite several of our lead supporters to say a few words about the student program.

(本题10分)U.S. weather experts have confirmed that the forecasted El Niño (厄尔尼诺) has officially begun.
C.It occurs regularly but not fixed. D.It only influences the ocean’s temperature.
【答案】32.A 33.C 34.C 35.A
【导语】本文主要介绍了厄尔尼诺现象的成因、历史影响以及对当前全球农业和粮食供应可能造成的威胁。
【详解】32.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“They warn this could be the most powerful this century, causing extreme weather like droughts and floods that may harm farming and food supplies.(他们警告说,这可能是本世纪最强烈的厄尔尼诺现象,会导致干旱和洪水等极端天气,可能损害农业和粮食供应。)”可知,美国专家担忧的是这次厄尔尼诺现象可能是本世纪最强烈的。
33.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“This cycle occurs every two to seven years and usually peaks around December or January.(这个周期每两到七年发生一次,通常在12月或1月左右达到顶峰。)”可知,厄尔尼诺现象是周期性发生的,但周期并不固定。
34.主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“History offers serious lessons. In 1877, a strong El Niño caused terrible droughts across Asia, Brazil, and northern Africa, leading to famines (饥荒) that killed over 50 million people. The 2023-2024 El Niño — among the five strongest — made 2024 the hottest year and worsened food shortages in southern Africa, where farmers depend on rainfall.(历史留下了惨痛的教训。1877年,一次强烈的厄尔尼诺现象在亚洲、巴西以及北非地区引发严重干旱,进而造成饥荒,致使超5000万人丧生。2023至2024年的厄尔尼诺现象位列史上最强五次之列,不仅让2024年成为有记录以来最热的一年,还加剧了南部非洲的粮食短缺问题,而该地区的农民完全依靠降雨开展农业生产。)”可知,第三段主要讲述了厄尔尼诺现象在历史上造成的各种灾难。
35.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中的“Some governments have plans like planting earlier or importing more, but these may not protect small farmers who depend on selling crops. As one expert notes, policies may ensure “enough food,” but they won’t take care of the growers.(一些政府已出台提前播种、增加粮食进口等应对措施,但这些举措可能无法保护以售卖农作物为生的小农户。有专家指出,相关政策或许能保障粮食总量充足,却无法惠及辛苦耕种的农户群体。)”可知,尽管有宏观政策保障粮食供应,但小农户依然无法得到妥善的保护,可推理出小农户仍将面临经济困难。

六、书面表达
67.(本题25分)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Alex, who was usually so fearless, now started to feel a bit scared. The heavy rain made visibility poor, and the strong wind was making the trees sway dangerously. His classmates were also looking around anxiously, their excited expressions replaced by worry. Mr. Brown was trying his best to shield the students from the rain with his coat, but it was of little use. Alex’s teeth chattered as he thought about the possible consequences of getting stuck in this storm. He regretted not listening to Maya’s advice earlier. The path was getting more and more difficult to navigate, with mud making it easy to slip and fall. Some students were on the verge of crying, and the group’s morale was at an all-time low.
Suddenly, Maya remembered something she had learned in a survival course. She quickly scanned the area around them and spotted a large overhanging rock not far away. Shouting to get everyone’s attention, she said, “Follow me! We can take shelter under that rock.” Mr. Brown immediately agreed and helped the students move towards the rock. Once they were all safely under the overhang, they were out of the direct rain. Maya then suggested they use some dry leaves and twigs they could find nearby to start a small fire to keep warm. The students, now full of hope, started collecting the materials. With a little effort, they managed to start a fire, and the warm glow gradually lifted their spirits. They waited for the storm to pass, grateful for Maya’s quick thinking and knowledge.
【导语】本文以一次徒步旅行展开,一群高中生在老师带领下进山,到岔路时多数人不顾Maya提醒选去瀑布的路,快到目的地时突降暴雨,情况失控。
