The first zoos in the 1800s were often in bad condition. But now many zoos have changed a lot. The best zoos work hard to protect animals and do research. They also have official (官方) recognition from world animal groups. Here are four great zoos around the world.
Doue-La-Fontaine, France
It is built in an old stone cave (山洞). It is the only cave zoo in the world. It cares more about animals’ health than visitors’ needs. It also spends much money on endangered animal protection. Its special stone walls create cool, quiet spaces, which fit many animals’ living needs perfectly.
Zoo Leipzig, Germany
It is one of the best zoos in Germany. It tries to make homes like animals’ natural homes. It takes part in international plans to save endangered animals and sends them back to the wild. It sets up several different areas, so visitors can easily learn about wildlife from different parts of the world.
Mandai Singapore Zoo, Singapore
This zoo lets 4,200 animals act naturally. Keepers give daily talks to teach visitors about animals. It takes part in many plans to help endangered animals. Built inside a rainforest area, it offers open-air living spaces instead of small cages (笼子) for the animals.
Shaldon Zoo, United Kingdom
It is the smallest zoo in the EAZA group. It keeps many endangered animals that people often don’t notice. None of its animals were caught in the wild. Though it covers only a small piece of woodland, it carries out important baby-animal raising work for those little-known endangered animals.

C. It offers wild-animal shows. D. It helps do research mainly.

I planned my first solo (独自的) trip during my year off. People at college had quickly formed travel teams, eager to plan the perfect Gap Year adventure with friends. As a self-proclaimed (自称的) lone wolf, I had decided to go solo. I chose Thailand — a good backpacking choice for solo beginners. Now years have passed, but I still remember the first day of that trip, clearly.
It’s 2016. 19-year-old me is seriously sleepy after three back-to-back flights to Koh Samui, Thailand. Holding a fresh melon drink in my hands, I find myself standing among a crowd of backpackers. I’m waiting for a boat to Koh Tao.
I reach the island after dark, before being guided into the back of a pickup truck with 6 other backpackers. There’s something particularly magical about racing through the forest with the warm night air flowing against your face. Every so often we pass a cafe or bar among branches and leaves; the towering trees move slowly past us. We race around the island for seemingly hours, cheering and laughing like madmen.
I finally reach my concrete (混凝土制的) home only to discover that, of course, there is no air-conditioning. I am serious when I say I now know how it feels to be inside an oven (烤炉). A combination of jet lag (时差反应) and impatience drives me to leave my room at about 1 am. I walk past the wooden houses to the beach. A few young people sit outside a bar on the sand, drinking beer and playing cards. It’s almost too easy to join them. So, there I sit. I’d finally done it, feeling the sand between my toes and watching the lights of distant fishing boats shine on the surface of the sea.

World Sleep Day fell on March 21st this year, and the problem of sleep deprivation (缺乏) among teenagers has come into focus.
Many teenagers feel sleepy during the day because of busy schedules filled with homework, extracurricular activities and the temptation (诱惑) to use electronic devices. A report by the Chinese Sleep Research Society on March 16th showed that more than half of young people born after 2000 in China fall asleep after midnight, reported Shanghai Observer. In the US, 77.3 percent of high school students do not get enough sleep, according to USA Facts.
Quality sleep is imperative for people of any age, but especially so for teenagers. They need nine to ten hours of sleep each day to perform at their best, said the US National Institutes of Health. This is more than what they need both as children and later as adults because of the deep mental, physical, social and emotional development that takes place during adolescence, said the website Sleep Foundation.
For students, sleep plays a key role in school performance by improving attention, memory and thinking skills. It helps sharpen the mind and promotes learning. Besides helping with learning, sleep also supports teenagers’ creative abilities. This link was first studied in the late 20th century when researchers at Loughborough University in the UK compared creative performance between sleep-deprived people and those who slept normally. The first group scored lower on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. They often repeated the same mistakes and had trouble coming up with new ideas.
More recently, in 2023, a team led by Kathleen Esfahany at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) identified a stage of sleep called “sleep onset (开端)”, which provides a special time for creativity. This period happens when we are between being awake and asleep. The MIT team found that when people are encouraged to dream about a certain topic during sleep onset, they perform more creatively on related tasks after waking up, reported MIT News.
8. What does the report from USAFacts show?
A. Teenagers stay up mainly for electronic devices.
B. Most US high school students lack enough sleep.
C. Sleep problems are worse in China than in America.
D. Chinese teens born after 2000 all sleep after midnight.
9. What does the underlined word “imperative” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Workable. B. Challenging.
C. Unusual. D. Important.
10. How did sleep-deprived individuals perform based on the Loughborough University study?
A. Average results yet innovative.
B. Higher scores but less creative.
C. Poorer performance with repeated errors.
D. Unchanged creativity and declined memory.
11. What did the MIT team discover about the “sleep onset” stage?
A. It provides a chance for creativity. B. It is the deepest stage of sleep.
C. It only occurs in teenagers. D. It helps people remember dreams better.

Seventeen-year-old American Mia Carter abandoned basketball due to its strict demands on height and stamina. She used to bury herself in social media after school until her PE teacher introduced pickleball (匹克球) last summer. “It allows players of all body types to compete equally without fierce physical challenges,” Mia shared. Now she takes part in weekly youth pickleball tournaments and feels fully accepted by teammates.
A 2026 global survey by the World Recreation Sports Federation covered 15,000 teens aged 14-18 across Europe and North America. Teenage pickleball participation rose by 58% in a year, while traditional sports like football only saw a 7% growth. Sport psychologist Dr. Leo Henderson said, “Conventional sports create mental barriers, as many teens fear being laughed at for poor performance. Pickleball eases such stress with mild rules and mixed-age matches.”
Many coaches hold reservations. They argue pickleball lacks intense physical training and building its courts will occupy limited campus space. Instead of ignoring these doubts, sports organizers found solutions: communities offer shared courts on weekends, and PE teachers combine running with pickleball drills to ensure enough exercise.
Canadian professional player Jake Torres runs teen training camps. He finds the sport improves teens’ social skills greatly. During doubles, constant communication helps shy kids open up. His records show over 70% of quiet teens made new friends after three months’ training.
Pickleball’s boom reflects a global shift in youth sports values. Young people now value fairness, pleasure and friendship more than winning games. This trend will keep renewing campus sports systems, providing friendly athletic choices for students of all physical levels.
12. Why did Mia Carter fall for pickleball?
A. It brings her many tournament awards.
B. It takes less spare time than other sports.
C. It helps her realize the dream of a pro athlete.
D. It suits teens without outstanding physical advantages.
13. What can we infer from the survey data in paragraph 2?
A. Traditional sports will disappear from high schools soon.
B. Pickleball succeeds in drawing more teens into sports.
C. Most European teenagers refuse track and field training.
D. Competitive school sports no longer carry mental pressure.
14. How do educators deal with coaches’ worries about pickleball?
A. They cut down the time of pickleball classes at school.
B. They build many exclusive pickleball courts on campus.
C. They adopt combined ways to fix exercise and space problems.
D. They stop promoting pickleball until new sports facilities are ready.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Pickleball: A Good Way for Teens to Make Friends
B. Schools Should Reduce Traditional PE Lessons
C. Physical Strength Is Unimportant in Modern Sports
D. Pickleball: A New Inclusive Sport Popular Among Global Teens

【77题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
Dear teachers and fellow students,
I feel greatly honored to deliver a speech themed “Sports and Fitness”. Nowadays, many students spend lots of time on their study, ignoring physical exercise.
Sports play a key role in our life. Not only do they build up our bodies, but they develop teamwork and strengthen our concentration. Sports are also beneficial to our mental health. When we play football or jog with classmates, the pleasant sense of achievement and the laughter with partners can wash away our anxiety. We don’t need difficult sports. Simple activities like rope skipping and short dancing are good choices.
Let’s take action from now on. Keep exercising and enjoy a healthier life!
Thank you.
