Most of us have secret gardens where we can relax and refresh ourselves. For me, since I can remember, that world has been books.
Like many children, I was first drawn to books by their images. My love of color started with the Babar books; my understanding of lines came from Tintin. Later, the words became more important to me. I was not happy at boarding school, but I loved spending time in its library. Books became my private garden. So it was no surprise that I chose to study English at university.
Today, fewer students choose English literature as an exam subject, and some universities are stopping stopping offering it. This is quite a cultural disaster, because we are taking away something valuable from our children. It may not lead directly to a well-paid job, but it has given people like me a true friend.
Later, work and family made it harder for me to read. As a journalist, I had many deadlines, and as a mother, I often had little time because of children and money worries. Sometimes I read while standing on a moving bus or train. It was difficult, but I kept reading. Every year, I still looked forward to new books by Ian McEwan and many other writers. Each book gave me a new world to explore and a new friend to meet.
At this point, readers may ask: wouldn’t I have been better off meeting real people or playing sports? Well, I don’t spend all my life on a sofa with books all around me. There is still time for talk and laughter. But without deep reading of great writers, my life would just be much smaller and poorer. The great books remain, through most of my life, my secret garden.
24. What first drew the author to books as a child?
A. The stories. B. The pictures. C. The titles. D. The reviews.
25. What does the author think of “English literature”?
A. It is useful in daily work. B. It is hard to study.
C. It helps people make money. D. It brings comfort to the mind.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The author’s effort to keep reading. B. The author’s favorite writers.
C. The author’s reading on trips. D. The author’s busy life.
27. What does the author try to do in the last paragraph?
A. Describe a social change.
B. Show readers’ misunderstanding of books.
C. Support her own opinion.
D. Prove the importance of real-life activities.
【答案】24. B 25. D 26. A 27. C

C
Students at Mariebergsskolan, a secondary school in Karlstad, Sweden, head to the canteen for free juices of apples, lemons, strawberries, etc. There’s also the choice of overnight oats (燕麦) with milk. It’s just after 8 am and the space is usually empty, but thanks to a pilot project started by Vinnova, Sweden’s national innovation agency, students are beginning their day with a healthy meal at school. All the food comes from local supermarkets, which donate extra fruit and vegetables to reduce food waste.
In 2018, the Swedish Food Agency reported that school meals failed to solve the growing problems of healthy eating and sustainability (持续性). In response, Vinnova created a joint food program to work towards the aim that all students can eat tasty and sustainable food. Behind that lay a bigger idea: Progress in school meal sustainability would help change Sweden’s whole food system.
The pilot project has become a model for Sweden’s national food strategy 2.0 and the latest guidelines for school meals. Alexander Alvsilver, the area lead at Vinnova, worries about who will continue the project when Vinnova leaves. “The climate crisis, the need for strong local food systems and the rising number of overweight children show the problem cannot be solved by one group or one project,” he says. “Key players need to join in or do more.”
Follow-up work is continuing in Karlstad and elsewhere. A recent plan has promised about £80,000 for student group activities if they help reduce food waste. At Mariebergsskolan, more students are agog to try the different juices in the canteen. A group of boys are chatting excitedly at a shared table while enjoying their oats with milk.
Though the project works well, Linnea Olsson Lee, a food expert in Karlstad, also points out some difficulties. “It’s still a challenge to get money for improvements and changes, or even to find the time,” she says. “Luckily, the work we’ve done has won us trust from politicians.”
28. What scene does the author describe at the beginning of the text?
A. Students are making donations. B. Students are having breakfast.
C. Students are preparing their breakfast. D. Students are shopping in supermarkets.
29. What does the pilot project aim to do?
A. Support local businesses. B. Raise money for schools.
C. Improve fruit and vegetable production. D. Encourage healthy eating and food sustainability.
30. What can be inferred from Alvsilver’s words?
A. Food system changes needs groups to work together.
B. Terrible climate may cause food shortages.
C. School meals need to be checked strictly.
D. The pilot project faces challenges.
31. What does the underlined word “agog” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Eager. B. Proud. C. Unwilling. D. Disappointed.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. A 31. A

Just 25 years ago, the top three career hopes for young people in Britain were teachers, bankers and doctors. Now, they want to be sports stars, pop stars and actors, according to a survey by The Guardian.
Rachel, a character in the popular TV show Glee, may be said to speak for British teenagers. “Nowadays being nobody is worse than being poor,” she said.
Emma Brockes, a reporter with The Guardian, believes it is “the influence of celebrity (名人) culture” that is to blame. “When children wanted to be a doctor, it wasn’t because they were really more interested in the functions of human organs than they are now; they go where the respect is,” she wrote.
It could explain why there has been such an increase in levels of anxiety and depression. Dr Carlo Strenger, at Tel Aviv University, studied the sense of self for his new book The Fear of Insignificance: Searching for Meaning in the 21st Century. He told the Daily Mail that young people now are “affected by the close connection to the global entertainment network, which has turned ranking and rating people according to wealth and celebrity into an obsession (痴迷)”. “As humans, we naturally measure ourselves to those around us, but now we live in a global village. We are comparing ourselves with the most ‘important’ people in the world and finding ourselves unwanted,” he said.
Today, even high achievers constantly fear that they are insignificant when they compare themselves to success stories in the media.
The way out? Simply stop measuring your achievement through a fantasy of wealth and celebrity. Dr Strenger said that it is a process called “active self-acceptance through a constant search for self-knowledge through life”.
“The fear of insignificance can only be overcome through strong individual and cultural identity over and above measurable achievement,” he said.
32. What did The Guardian’s survey find about British teenagers’ career choices?
A. They prefer jobs that can make them well-known.
B. They prefer jobs that serve the public.
C. They prefer jobs that deal with human bodies.
D. They prefer jobs that offer the highest pay.
33. What is Emma Brockes’ opinion about the change in British young people’s career hopes?
A. She thinks it is a good trend for British society.
B. She believes it is caused by the bad influence of celebrity culture.
C. She doubts whether young people are truly interested in those jobs.
D. She worries that there will not be enough teachers or doctors in the future.
34. What can we learn from the whole passage?
A. Rachel believes that being poor is the worst thing in today’s world.
B. Dr Carlo Strenger has written a book about the meaning of life in the 21st century.
C. The global entertainment network teaches people how to accept themselves actively.
D. Dr Strenger suggests that we should stop measuring achievement through wealth and celebrity.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Rise of Celebrity Culture B. Young People’s New Career Dreams
C. The Fear of Being “Nobody” D. Advice on Choosing a Career
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. C

67. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为 150左右。
With time going by, Mother’s Day was around the corner. Maybe it is the happiest day for every mother. Bruce, a boy of nine years old, with his little sister Alina, six years old, wanted their mother to be one of them. But they were too young to get a job, even if it was a part-time one. What could they do? There was only one week left. They felt sad whenever they thought their mother would spend her Mother’s Day without carnations (康乃馨).
Money is hard to make. Buying a bunch of carnations would cost a large sum of money for them. One day when they were wandering at the street, they heard Mr. Green was complaining that he had no time to wash those soda pop bottles. It is a kind of soda pop sold in bottles and the bottles can be washed and filled again. Mr. Green ran that grocery shop by himself, so he had no time to wash them. “Would you like to try, Alina?” Bruce asked his sister suddenly. Alina nodded her head without hesitation. After all, both of them knew that maybe it was an opportunity for them to make money for the flowers.
They walked a few steps and came near Mr. Green. They looked up at Mr. Green and asked whether they could help him to wash those bottles. Mr. Green looked at them curiously until he was told the reason. He agreed and promised that he would pay 0.1 dollar for every bottle. Bruce and Alina were very happy even though they knew they would have a busy week.
They came to Mr. Green’s shop in the next seven days when they came back from school. On the morning of Mother’s Day, they got the pay — 6.1 dollars. The boy also had 0.3 dollar saved.
So with a total of 6.4 dollars they walked about a mile to a flower shop. When they came inside, someone asked what they wanted. They told him they wanted to buy some carnations for their mother. The boy reached into his pocket and pulled out their cash, asking if that would be enough.
“But, your money is not enough!” said the shop assistant.

“Wait a moment, please!” another gentleman waved to them.

【答案】[参考范文]
“But, your money is not enough!” said the shop assistant. “Even for the smallest bunch?” Bruce asked quickly and eagerly, not believing his ears. “Not enough!” the shop assistant answered clearly, with the explanation that carnations were the most expensive flowers these days because of Mother’s Day. They were too disappointed to hear that! Bruce hopelessly put the money back into his pocket.
“Wait a moment, please!” another gentleman waved to them. “I just have some carnations on sale which are a little small but pretty. Would you like to have a look? Only two dollars!” Bruce nodded at once. “Just a minute!” The gentleman went in the shop and came out with a bunch of carnations with paper wrapping around them. He only took two dollars, and also gave a Mother’s Day card as a gift. “Thank you very much,” Bruce bowed to the gentleman and they walked home proudly carrying the flowers for Mum. They couldn’t wait to see her smiling face.
