Whenever I complained that I was bored, my mother would not hand me a phone or switch on the television. Instead she would move from shelf to shelf, and return with some books in her arms. She would sit on the edge of my bed, describing each in a few words.
My mother used books as a form of communication. It wasn’t simply the exchange I’ve just described — her giving me books she’d read and loved as a child, and hoping I would love them too — but the words in the books themselves. If we drove towards the Gladesville Bridge at night, the lights of cars streaming down, she would quote her favourite poet, who described headlights on the bridge as "the immaculate sigh of stars". To her, books gave voice to what she noticed.
My mother’s gift for noticing small moments reflected an important quality: she deeply valued sensory details. She was always pointing them out to me, like young ducks, the fluff (绒毛) all over their bodies pale yellow, as though they wore bath towels. I didn’t realise it then, but those moments were quietly shaping the way I would later understand the world.
Now as a literature teacher, I value sensory details as well. I often find myself encouraging my students to notice them, just as my mother once encouraged me. When talking about the Harry Potter series, I ask my students to consider whether it’s the lists of richly imagined foods, the all-flavour jellybeans and the butter beer that are the books’ real attraction.
Only now do I realise how much of my mother I carry with me. What stays with me is not the titles she chose or the quotes she gave, but the habit of looking closely at the world. Borrowing lines from the books to describe our own lives, we’re adding depth to what we’ve seen or felt or heard.
4. What did the mother use to relieve the writer’s boredom?
A. Television. B. Phones. C. Books. D. Food.
5. Why did the mother quote “the immaculate sigh of stars”?
A. To vividly describe a small moment. B. To briefly explain a bridge structure.
C. To express her love for the universe. D. To talk about her most beloved poet.
6. What does the writer emphasize in her teaching?
A. Challenging literary classics. B. Paying mindful attention to details.
C. Quoting the Harry Potter series. D. Developing creative imagination.
7. What does the writer learn from her mother?
A. Poetic writing techniques. B. Vital communication skills.
C. A method of self-reflection. D. A habit of close observation.

Two friends are seated in a busy restaurant. They acknowledge it has been “too long” since they last caught up. Then a tense silence follows. One friend asks, “So, how are you?” Such a simple question weighs heavily on the other. She forces a smile and replies, “I’m fine. How are you?”
The strange part is that she doesn’t say it intentionally. “Fine” seems to arrive on its own before she even questions if it’s true. For many of us, being “fine” is a reflex, like pulling our hands back from something hot before we feel the pain. This behavioral pattern sticks because it works, at least on a surface level. It keeps the childhood dinner table calm, or a boss from further asking personal questions. “Fine” creates a boundary without us having to voice the need for space.
There is a trade-off, of course. “I’m fine” isn’t so much a lie. Rather, it’s a stand-in for something more authentic (真实的) and complicated. Often we lack the time, safety or language to name what is under “fine”. The reflex to be “fine” becomes so automatic that rarely does anyone get a real answer, including ourselves.
This “I’m fine” reflex is seldom built in a single event. Instead it’s incubated in moments when “fine” keeps things working: with easily stressed parents, or in a household where no one truly cares to listen when asking “how are you”. None of the exchanges has to be dramatic to leave a mark; enough repetition tells the nervous system that honesty here is unsafe or unwanted.
Fortunately, once identified, the reflex can be changed — just a brief pause (暂停) before saying “fine”. In that pause, you don’t even have to voice the truth to break the habit; start simply by noticing the gap between the automatic answer and the real one. Then start with one low-pressure person, like a friend, to practise honest replies before opening up to others.
8. Why does the author mention the two friends in paragraph 1?
A. To share communication skills. B. To give a reason for small talk.
C. To introduce a response pattern. D. To illustrate the safe social distance.
9. What can we infer about the “I’m fine” reflex?
A. It allows people some personal space. B. It is a white lie meant to hide bad moods.
C. It does more harm than good in daily life. D. It efficiently expresses complicated emotions.
10. What does the underlined word “incubated” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Hidden. B. Replaced. C. Developed. D. Discovered.
11. What is suggested in the last paragraph?
A. Questioning the honesty of others. B. Sharing pressure with trusted friends.
C. Avoiding simple answers in conversations. D. Examining automatic replies before speaking.
D
Few things are as undoubtedly good for you as exercise. Besides making you fitter and stronger, it cuts your risk of heart disease, strokes, diabetes, many types of cancer and more.
But how much of the cure-all do you really need? The WHO recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, such as easy jogging or cycling, and two sessions a week of strength training. Many still fall short. In America, for instance, less than half of adults meet the minimum recommendations for just cardiovascular exercise alone.
Those who hate pounding the pavements need not despair, though. Even a little exercise is better than none. And a growing pile of evidence suggests that might be true even with very small amounts of exercise indeed: potentially just a few minutes a day.
Recently a group of researchers published a study that analyzed data from 25,000 British people who did no organised exercise. The researchers were interested in “vigorous irregular lifestyle physical activity”, or VILPA — short bursts of relatively intense exercise undertaken in daily life.
Few of the participants did much VILPA — the median was just 4.4 minutes per day. But even that was associated with a reduction in the chance of dying, from any cause, of up to 30% in the following seven years for which the average participant was monitored. The association persisted even after the researchers tried to account for the idea that causality (因果关系) might run the other way, with only the already healthy capable of performing VILPA.
Exactly why VILPAs seem to be so good for you is not yet clear. But inspired by the results, some academics have started advocating “exercise snacks”: short bursts of activity that even the most gym-shy or time-pressed should be able to manage. As the old saying goes, every little helps. In fact, it may help much more than you think.
12. What do the WHO’s exercise guidelines advocate?
A. A mix of intensities. B. Moderate activity.
C. Intense workouts. D. Duration over frequency.
13. Which of the following is an example of VILPA?
A. Jogging for 20 minutes at a steady speed.
B. Doing push-ups during each work break.
C. Climbing stairs quickly to a meeting.
D. Walking the dog after supper.
14. What factor did the researchers take into account?
A. Participants’ original health state.
B. Methods for lowering the death rate.
C. Participants’ daily exercise preferences.
D. The length of people’s monitoring period.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage?
A. How Little Exercise Can You Get Away With?
B. VILPA: A New-style Strength-building Workout
C. Should You Follow the WHO Exercise Guidelines?
D. Exercise Snacks: Turn Daily Chores into Workouts

Putting things off costs a lot. One study published in 2013 ranked 22,053 people on a procrastination (拖延) scale of one to five. Each increase of one point was associated with a drop of nearly $15,000 in annual earnings. A study of 3,525 Swedish university students published in 2023 also found that procrastinators more likely to suffer anxiety, stress and loneliness. ____16____
____17____ One set is known as mental contrasting with implementation intentions (MCII). Popularised in a number of smartphone apps, the idea is simple: picture the benefits of achieving a goal; contrast that image with the main obstacle; and picture a strategy to overcome it. In two randomised trials reported in 2020 undergraduates were given online MCII exercises designed to reduce the delaying of bedtime, which research has linked to procrastination in general. They missed their intended bedtimes by around 38 minutes less each night than those in a control group given advice about healthy sleeping habits.
Exercise shows promise too. A Chinese trial published in March assessed procrastination in 77 male teenagers. They were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of strength training, high-intensity interval training, or a combination of the two. ____18____ An earlier study of 564 Chinese university students found that the most physically active also procrastinated less. The researchers speculated that overcoming the stress gave them a “sense of mastery” that boosted confidence and motivation.
These days, opportunities for procrastination are greater than before. Many people work from home, out of the boss’s sight. ____19____ In one review published in 2022, each of the 18 studies assessed linked excessive scrolling (滚屏) to procrastination. ____20____ Lack of sleep blocks executive function, leading to more failures of self-regulation. It would be helpful if the scientists involved could stop procrastination.
A. Mental exercises appear to help.
B. Smartphones often delay bedtime, too.
C. Smartphones offer endless distractions.
D. Here are some ways to stop procrastinating.
E. Then there is the question of diet and other habits.
F. They showed “significant reductions” in putting things off.
G. Procrastinators are more likely to delay medical treatment.

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news.

C 5. A 6. B 7. D
根据第一段“When I complained that I was bored, my mother would not hand me a phone or switch on the television. Instead she would move from shelf to shelf, and return with some books in her arms.(每当我抱怨无聊时,我妈妈不会递给我手机或打开电视。相反,她会从一个书架走到另一个书架,抱回一些书。)”可知,妈妈用书籍来缓解作者的无聊。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“If we drove towards the Gladesville Bridge at night, the lights of cars streaming down, she would quote her favourite poet, who described headlights on the bridge as "the immaculate sigh of stars". To her, books gave voice to what she noticed.
根据第四段“Now as a literature teacher, I value sensory details as well. I often find myself encouraging my students to notice them, just as my mother once encouraged me. (现在作为一名文学教师,我也重视感官细节。我经常发现自己在鼓励学生去关注它们,就像我妈妈曾经鼓励我一样。)”可知,作者在教学中强调的是让学生用心关注细节。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“What stays with me is not the titles she chose or the quotes she gave, but the habit of looking closely at the world.(留在我心中的不是她选择的书名或她引用的话,而是仔细观察世界的习惯。)”
C
C 9. A 10. C 11. D
根据第一段“One friend asks, “So, how are you?” Such a simple question weighs heavily on the other. She forces a smile and replies, “I’m fine. How are you?”(其中一位朋友问道:“那你怎么样?”这个简单问题让对方感到沉重。她强挤出一丝微笑,回答道:“我挺好的,你呢?”)”可知,作者在第一段中提到两位朋友的原因是为了介绍一种回应模式。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“It keeps the childhood dinner table calm, or a boss from further asking personal questions. “Fine” creates a boundary without us having to voice the need for space.(它能让童年时的餐桌保持平静,也能让上司不再追问私密问题。“挺好的”创造了一种界限,而我们无需明确表达自己需要空间。)”可知,“我很好”这一句回答为人们提供了一些个人空间。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“This “I’m fine” reflex is seldom built in a single event.(这种“我挺好的”的反应,通常并非源于单一事件。)”和“moments when “fine” keeps things working: with easily stressed parents, or in a household where no one truly cares to listen when asking “how are you”(那些说“很好”就能让事情维持运转的时刻:面对容易焦虑的父母,或是在一个问“你怎么样”却没人真正愿意倾听的家庭里)”可知,“I’m fine”这句话不是在单一事件中养成的,而是在“说‘很好’就能让事情维持运转”的时刻养成,incubated的意思是“养成”,和developed意思相近。
根据最后一段“In that pause, you don’t even have to voice the truth to break the habit; start simply by noticing the gap between the automatic answer and the real one. Then start with one low-pressure person, like a friend, to practise honest replies before opening up to others.(在那个停顿里,你甚至不必说出真相就能打破这个习惯;先从留意自动化回答和真实回答之间的差距开始。然后从一个让你感到压力小的人(比如朋友)开始,练习诚实的回答,之后再向其他人敞开心扉。)”可知,最后一段建议在说话前检查自动化回答。

A 13. C 14. A 15. A
根据第二段中“The WHO recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, such as easy jogging or cycling, and two sessions a week of strength training. (世界卫生组织建议每周至少进行150分钟中等强度活动,例如轻松慢跑或骑自行车,以及每周两次力量训练)”可知,WHO的锻炼指南提倡将中等强度活动与力量训练相结合,即混合不同强度的运动。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“The researchers were interested in “vigorous irregular lifestyle physical activity”, or VILPA — short bursts of relatively intense exercise undertaken in daily life. (研究人员对“剧烈的不规则生活方式体育活动”或VILPA感兴趣,VILPA是日常生活中进行的相对剧烈的短时间运动)”可知,VILPA指的是日常生活中偶发的、高强度的短暂活动。C项“快速爬楼梯去开会”符合这一定义,属于日常生活中突然需要进行的较剧烈活动。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“The association persisted even after the researchers tried to account for the idea that causality (因果关系) might run the other way, with only the already healthy capable of performing VILPA.

故填were permitted。

故填as。
故填the。

Dear Ms. Anderson,
Knowing that you are going to set up an English study corner in our classroom, I’m writing to share my opinion.
Personally, I prefer the English Book Crossing Station to the Excellent Composition Display Wall. Firstly, original English books can expose us to authentic expressions and diverse cultures, greatly broadening our horizons. Secondly, book sharing allows us to communicate and learn from each other, creating a better English learning atmosphere. Besides, it can make our spare time more meaningful.
I hope my suggestion will be helpful.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!”
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.
