Professor Mark Pagel, an evolutionary biologist, said: “It’s ____27____ to think we may have started speaking 160,000 to 200,000 years ago because that’s when modern humans evolved. In that time about 500,000 languages will have developed — but there may have been many more.” The most ____28____ linguistic (语言的)place is Papua New Guinea, which has 830 languages, making it home to one in eight of all the world’s languages. “It’s truly extraordinary,” said Pagel. “There are places in the coastal regions of Papua New Guinea where you can find a(n) ____29____ language spoken every couple of miles. I once met a Papuan man and I said to him, ‘This can’t possibly be ____30____,’ and he said to me, ‘Oh, no, it’s not — they’re far closer together than that.’” One ____31____ suggested by scientists for this linguistic variety is the climate, which makes it easy for small groups to grow their own food and survive. This means that more languages are ____32____ as each tribe (部落)develops its own. “Tribal groups use languages to make their territories,” said Pagel. “They use it to broadcast and advertise their ____33____ — and to distinguish themselves from others. It’s a way of drawing ____34____. According to Robert, an anthropologist, people in warmer countries use ____36____ that help them communicate outdoors such as vowels (元音), which are easier to hear at a distance than consonants (辅音). With around 7,000 languages currently in existence across the globe, there are ____37____ languages than ever before in history, with only about 20 languages covering almost the ____38____ population of the world. The rest are spoken by tribal groups of usually only a few thousand. “Languages die out for political and geographical reasons,” said Pagel. “Some languages just get linked to successful stories ____39____ and they drive those languages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) Charlotte Uhlenbrock has just finished filming a TV series called Jungle — a hard 19-week job that involved her exploring the dense jungles of the Congo, the Amazon and Borneo. She says that it was fascinating, but scaring as well. So what was her most challenging experience? “Definitely climbing an 80-metre-high tree in Borneo, when I’m scared of heights! It was frightening! I had to keep going up and up, when a voice inside me was saying, “Down! Down!” I kept thinking the ropes were going to break and send me falling down below.” And “down below” was where the bugs were. Apart from the usual mosquitoes, in the Amazon rainforest she suffered a lot from sand-fly bites. “I’ve had some horrible bites but these really are the itchiest(最痒的)bites I’ve ever had. At one stage, I counted 70 bites on one arm,” she says. “Just as annoying were the sweat bees in the Congo. They try to drink the sweat on your face and even the tears from your eyes. The most disgusting thing, though, was trying to pull the leeches(蚂蟥)off your skin. The more I pulled, the more they stretched and the tighter their jaws held onto my leg. I kept shouting, ‘Get them off!’ and the film crew kept saying, ‘Just a minute, this makes a really good shot!’” Charlotte’s journey into the heart of the world’s most significant rainforest was an inspiring experience. “The rainforest really is like a city. Each tree is like an urban tower block with hundreds of residents. If you knock it down, you cause just as much damage as if those residents were human. The jungle is extraordinary because although it only covers about 6 percent of the world, it contains over 50 percent of all known animal and plant species, plus lots more that are unknown, too.” Back in London, what has she been enjoying since her return to “civilization”? “I’ve been having lots of nice, long showers,” she says. “In the Congo, the possibility of using up our water supplies was always a worrying thought. And I find that when I’ve been in hot, uncomfortable conditions for a while, the things I look forward to more than anything else are being with my family and enjoying my favorite meal.” 41. Why did Charlotte Uhlenbrock spend 19 weeks in the jungles? A. To explore the unknown animal and plant species. B. To make a TV program about rainforest. C. To get away from modern “civilization”. D. To conquer her own fear of heights. 42. According to Charlotte Uhlenbrock, which is the most difficult part in her adventure? A. Getting the rope broken. B. Falling down the slope. C. Or tennis without a tennis racket? These days the answer is ‘Yes, you can’. Here are some 21st century ways of playing our favourite traditional sports. WII SPORTS Nintendo’s Wii Sports is the best-selling computer game of all time. You can play tennis, baseball or golf, go bowling or do boxing. You don’t run around or get tired, however. You do everything by moving your arm and pressing a button on your games console. It’s also a good social activity and many people organize gaming parties with their friends. But there is a downside: at least ten people in the UK injure themselves playing Wii Sports every week and have to go to hospital. There are also hundreds of cases of broken furniture, broken windows and injured pets! Some people call this new 21st century problem ‘Wii-it-is’. DISC GOLF The game of golf is more than 250 years old. But for the 21st century version of the game, you don’t need any expensive special equipment. Players don’t hit a ball; they throw a plastic disc towards the ‘hole’-which is actually a metal basket. The winner is the player who reaches the ‘hole’ with the lowest number of throws. More than half a million people around the world now play the game. There are more than 1,000 disc golf courses in 40 countries and many of them are in public parks. It’s a great way to get exercise in the fresh air. FREESTYLE FOOTBALL In Freestyle football there are no teams, you don’t kick the ball, and you never score a goal. Freestyle footballers try to keep the ball in the air using any part of their body. Some people describe it as a mixture of breakdancing and football. Judges give points for ball control and original moves. John Farnworth, from Lancashire in the north of England, was the world’s first Freestyle champion: in 2011 he ran the London Marathon(42 km) in 12 hours 15 minutes, keeping a ball in the air all the way! 45. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. Some people use Wii Sports as a way of socializing. B. Wii Sports cause more damage to our health than real sports. C. Players are not allowed to use their hands in freestyle football. D. John Farnworth won the London Marathon with a ball in his hands 【答案】45. D 46. B 47. A 【解析】 【导语】本文讲述了几种依托传统运动演变而来的二十一世纪新式玩法,分别介绍了Wii运动、飞盘高尔夫以及花式足球的运动形式和特点。 【45题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Can you play golf without a ball? Or tennis without a tennis racket? These days the answer is ‘Yes, you can’. Here are some 21st century ways of playing our favourite traditional sports.(没有高尔夫球能打高尔夫吗?没有网球拍能打网球吗?如今答案是“可以”。下文介绍几种二十一世纪开展我们喜爱的传统运动的新式方式。)”并结合后文分别介绍几种传统运动的新玩法,因此本文主要介绍传统运动的新玩法。 【46题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“But for the 21st century version of the game, you don’t need any expensive special equipment.(但这项运动的二十一世纪版本,不需要任何昂贵的专用装备。)”可知,飞盘高尔夫花费更少。 【47题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Nintendo’s Wii Sports is the best-selling computer game of all time.(Nintendo的Wii Sports是有史以来最畅销的电脑游戏。)”和“It’s also a good social activity and many people organize gaming parties with their friends.(它也是一项很好的社交活动,很多人和朋友一起组织游戏派对。)”可知,有些人把Wii Sports当作一种社交方式。 (C) In the roughly 250 years since the Industrial Revolution, the world’s population, like its wealth, has exploded. Before the end of this century, however, the number of people on the planet could shrink for the first time since the Black Death. The root cause is not an increase in deaths, but a drop in births. Across much of the world the fertility rate, the average number of births per woman, is collapsing. Although the trend may be familiar, its extent and its consequences are not. Even as artificial intelligence (AI) leads to optimism in some quarters, the baby bust (婴儿荒) hangs over the future of the world economy. Whatever some environmentalists say, a shrinking population creates problems. The world is not close to full and the economic difficulties resulting from fewer young people are many. The obvious one is that it is getting harder to support the world’s pensioners. Retired folk draw on the output of the working-aged, either through the state, which requests taxes on workers to pay public pensions, or by cashing in savings to buy goods and services or because relatives provide care unpaid. But whereas the rich world currently has around three people between 20 and 64 years old for everyone over 65, by 2050 it will have less than two. The implications are higher taxes, later retirements, lower real returns for savers and, possibly, government budget crises. Low proportion of workers to pensioners are only one problem resulting from collapsing fertility. Younger people have more of what psychologists call “fluid intelligence”, the ability to think creatively so as to solve problems in entirely new ways. This youthful energy adds to the accumulated knowledge of older workers. It also brings change. Patents filed by the youngest inventors are much more likely to cover breakthrough innovations. Older countries and their young people are less enterprising and less comfortable taking risks. Because the old benefit less than the young when economies grow, they have proved less keen on pro-growth policies, especially housebuilding. Creative destruction is likely to be rarer in ageing societies, restricting productivity growth in ways that compound into an enormous missed opportunity. Eventually, therefore, the world will have to make do with fewer youngsters—and perhaps with a shrinking population. With that in mind, recent advances in AI could not have come at a better time. A productive AI economy might find it easy to support a greater number of retired people. Eventually AI may be able to generate ideas by itself, reducing the need for human intelligence. Combined with robotics, AI may also make caring for the elderly less labour-intensive. Such innovations will certainly be in high demand. If technology does allow humanity to overcome the baby bust, it will fit the historical pattern. Unexpected productivity advances meant that demographic time-bombs (人口定时炸弹) failed to explode. Fewer babies mean less human genius. But that might be a problem human genius can fix. 48. What can be learned from the first paragraph? A. The collapsing fertility rate is to blame for the shrinking population. B. Black Death marked the shrinking number of people for the first time. C. Industrial Revolution weakened the increase of the world’s population. D. The public are familiar with the extent and the influence of the baby bust. 49. What makes it harder to support the world’s pensioners? A. Close relatives have refused to take care of the old without being paid. B. The output of the working-aged which the old can draw on is shrinking. C. The old have cashed in savings to cover expenses of goods and services. D. The government has requested taxes on younger employees to pay pensions. 50. Why does “fluid intelligence” (in Paragraph 3) suffer in ageing societies? A. Because older workers boast more accumulated knowledge. B. Because the old benefit less than the young in creative destruction. C. Because collapsing fertility results in low proportion of workers to pensioners. D. Because restricting productivity growth compounds into a missed opportunity. 51. The best title for the passage is probably _____. A. The Old Pensioners Make a Comeback B. Artificial Intelligence Leads to a Bright Future C. The Measures to Overcome the Baby Bust D. The Effect of the Baby Bust on Economy 【答案】48. A 49. B 50. B 51. D 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了婴儿荒的原因和对经济的影响。 【48题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第一段中“The root cause is not an increase in deaths, but a drop in births. (根本原因不是死亡人数的增加,而是出生率的下降。)”可知,不断下降的生育率是造成人口减少的原因。故选A。 【49题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第二段中“The obvious one is that it is getting harder to support the world’s pensioners. Retired folk draw on the output of the working-aged, either through the state, which requests taxes on workers to pay public pensions, or by cashing in savings to buy goods and services or because relatives provide care unpaid. (退休人员利用适龄工作人员的产出,或者通过国家向工人征税来支付公共养老金,或者通过将储蓄兑换成现金来购买商品和服务,或者因为亲戚提供无偿照顾。)”可知,老年人可以利用的劳动年龄的产出正在减少,让养活世界上的养老金领取者变得更加困难。故选B。 【50题详解】 推理判断题。由文章第三段中“Younger people have more of what psychologists call “fluid intelligence”, the ability to think creatively so as to solve problems in entirely new ways. 通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段中“The root cause is not an increase in deaths, but a drop in births. Across much of the world the fertility rate, the average number of births per woman, is collapsing. Although the trend may be familiar, its extent and its consequences are not. Even as artificial intelligence (AI) leads to optimism in some quarters, the baby bust hangs over the future of the world economy. (根本原因不是死亡人数的增加,而是出生率的下降。在世界大部分地区,生育率,即每个妇女的平均生育数量,正在急剧下降。虽然这种趋势可能很熟悉,但其程度和后果却不为人所知。尽管人工智能(AI)在某些方面带来了乐观情绪,但婴儿荒仍笼罩着世界经济的未来。)”可知,文章主要介绍了婴儿荒的原因和对经济的影响。故选D。 Section C Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentence than you need. Most people look forward to retirement as a time when they can finally take up activities that they never had the time or energy to pursue before. ____52____ They suggest that retirees are more likely to suffer from depression and possibly higher rates of other diseases such as heart disease and high blood pressure. That’s why a new study of French workers is welcome news. Led by Hugo Westerlund, a professor of psychology at Stockholm University, the study of more than 14,000 workers found lower rates of depression and fatigue in people after they got retired than while they were still employed. ____53____ They found in the year immediately after retirement, the volunteers reported 40% fewer depressive symptoms than they had in the year before their retirement. The researchers also found an 81% drop in reports of both mental and physical fatigue over the same time period. ____54____ The decline in depressive symptoms suggests that retirement may be having a positive mental effect, too, which may have a lot to do with the generous pensions that French workers enjoy. Most retirees in that country still benefit from about 80% of their yearly salaries. “The economic or financial situation in retirement is very important,” Westerlund says. “We don’t know if the decrease in fatigue and depressive symptoms is because of the removal of something bad while in work or the addition of something good while in retirement. But no matter the reason, if life in retirement is not comfortable, then we won’t see the improvements we did.” ____55____ With less of a financial safety net, workers may no longer seem so mentally and physically happy to be out of work. A. But some recent studies on people in their golden years are disturbing. B. However, in European nations like France, governments are considering changes to pension (养老金) plans, which may affect retirees’ health after they leave their jobs. C. Clearly, said Westerlund, much of the decrease in physical and mental fatigue (疲倦) can be traced back to relief from the stresses of work. D. Those who don’t have good social networks may not be able to get assistance if they become ill. E. The scientists followed the employees of the French national gas and electric company for 14 years. F. But for many, retirement means a sudden loss of many work-related social ties and a drastic (急剧的,大幅的) decrease in activity levels. 【答案】52. A 53. E 54. C 55. Security first: If you connect to your company’s internal systems or email through a Virtual Private Network or other secure tunnel, make sure you’ve tested it and that it ____19____ from where you plan to work. Also, have a backup plan in the event your connection experiences disturbance. The same advice applies to internet ____20____. To do this, make sure you have the right wireless plan, especially if you handle large files. The ability to communicate quickly and ____21____ is the most priceless quality a remote employee needs to succeed. Do ____22____ your manager or boss frequently. Reading Comprehension Section A Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. It is one of the great puzzles of evolution. However, scientists are finally beginning to ____26____ the secrets of language. New research suggests that as many as 500,000 languages have lived and died since modern humans first evolved. Each language shows who is a member of the group and who isn’t.” For this reason, about 60% of the world’s languages are now found across equatorial Africa and the Pacific islands. ____35____ also influences the way in which sound is used in language. Every language on Earth is equally good at being a human language. There are no languages that are ____40____ others. There are just lucky ones.” 26. A. guard B. learn C. share D. unlock 27. C. Climbing up a high tree. D. Being bitten by leeches. 43. It can be learned from the passage that the sweat bees in the Congo may feed on________. A. flowers B. tears C. human faces D. human arms 44. While in jungles, Charlotte missed ________most. A. her family B. her favourite restaurant C. clean water D. enough food supplies (B) Can you play golf without a ball? 45. What is the passage mainly about? A. Creative sports of the 21st century. B. Our favourite traditional sports. C. Questions about new sports. D. New ways with old sports. 46. How is disc golf different from traditional golf? A. The former no longer requires hands. B. The former costs much less. C. The former is played indoors. D. The former has a longer history. 47. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. Some people use Wii Sports as a way of socializing. B. Wii Sports cause more damage to our health than real sports. C. Players are not allowed to use their hands in freestyle football. D. John Farnworth won the London Marathon with a ball in his hands (C) In the roughly 250 years since the Industrial Revolution, the world’s population, like its wealth, has exploded. The Effect of the Baby Bust on Economy Section C Directions: Read the following passage. 第二卷 Ⅴ.
