A new study shows cats are smart little animals with great memories.
Scientists wanted to know how well cats can remember things, so they did an experiment with 50 friendly house cats of different ages. All of them loved tasty food.
The scientists put four bowls of the same type in a quiet room. Two bowls were full of the cats’ favourite snacks, and the other two were empty. Then the scientists let the cats into the room to eat. After they finished eating, the scientists took them out. Fifteen minutes later, the scientists changed all the bowls to clean, empty ones. When the cats went back, they spent much more time around the bowls that had food before! They smelt the bowls with their little noses and touched them with their paws (爪子).
This tells us cats can remember “what” and “where”. They seem to have good short-term memories. However, another study in 2006 showed something different: most cats couldn’t find hidden things after 30 seconds. The study opens the door to further research on how long cats’ memories can be.
21. Scientists did the experiment with 50 cats of the same age.
22. There were four bowls filled with snacks in the room at first
23. The scientists waited fifteen minutes before bringing the cats back to the room.

The small river behind my grandmother’s house was my childhood paradise (乐园). Every day after school, my friends and I would play by it. We loved watching small fish swim near the shore and listening to birds sing in the trees. The river smelled like wet earth and green grass — a smell I can still remember when I close my eyes.
One special memory shines brightest. On my tenth birthday, Grandpa taught me to fish using just a bamboo pole and some bread. The sun was warm on our backs as we waited quietly. When I caught my first fish, Grandpa smiled and said, “Good job!” That night, we let the fish go back into the water.
Now my hometown has changed greatly. The small and old road is gone. There are very wide and new roads. Standing by the roads are many tall buildings. It is quite different from the hometown in the past. I feel a little upset, but when I recall my childhood days, I still feel happy and warm.
I always think of what my Grandpa taught me: Life keeps changing like this river, but happy memories stay with us forever. When I feel sad or worried, I think of those sunny afternoons by the water. The river reminds me to be thankful for the past but keep looking forward to the future.

A. The small river. B. My grandmother’s house.

A. Be thankful for the past.
B. Life is always the same.
C. Forget the past.
D. Life is like the new buildings in his hometown.

The Feynman Technique (费曼学习法) was created by a famous physicist named Richard Feynman. It is a way of studying that helps students learn by teaching someone else. This method helps you truly understand a topic, not just remember facts. Unlike simply reading textbooks again and again, it makes you take an active part in learning. If you want to try the Feynman Technique, here’s how to do it:
Step 1, choose one topic you want to learn. It’s better to focus on one thing at a time. If you try to learn too many things, you may not understand any of them well.
Step 2, try to explain the topic in simple words, as if you were teaching a primary school student. Use easy language and examples. This step helps you break down big ideas into small parts.
Step 3, look back at your explanation. See if there is any part that is still difficult or unclear. It can be useful to ask a friend or family member to listen and tell you what they don’t understand.
Step 4, improve your explanation based on what you found in Step 3. Make everything as clear as possible.
Step 5, repeat all the steps. Doing it once is often not enough. The more you repeat, the better you will understand.
When you feel you’ve learned the topic well, don’t forget to reward yourself. You can eat something you like, listen to music, or just relax!
36. What is the main advantage of the Feynman Technique?
A. It helps students read textbooks faster.
B. It makes students remember facts easily.
C. It helps students truly understand a topic.
D. It allows students to learn without teachers.
37. In Step 2, who do you imagine teaching when you explain the topic?
A. A high school student. B. A famous scientist.
C. A 10-year-old girl. D. A family member.
38. Which of the following is the correct order for the Feynman Technique?
①Pick a topic to learn. ②Improve the weak areas.
③Explain it in the simplest words. ④Repeat the steps until you really learn it.
⑤Find the “imperfect part” of your explanation.
A. ①-③-⑤-②-④ B. ①-⑤-②-③-④ C. ⑤-②-①-③-④ D. ③-⑤-②-④-①
39. What does the underlined word “reward” mean in the last paragraph?
A. To forget something. B. To give oneself a prize.
C. To repeat the steps again. D. To find a difficult part.
40. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The story of physicist Richard Feynman.
B. What the Feynman Technique is and its five steps.
C. How to explain knowledge to little kids.
D. Ways to relax after studying hard.

Do you often forget where you left your glasses? Have you failed to remember the English words you learned yesterday? Memory problems are quite normal in daily life. These are some helpful tips to improve your memory.
Use your different body senses. Your eyes, ears and nose can help you remember things well. Take your glasses as an example. You often forget where you put them because you don't notice the things around them. Next time you put them down, look at the colour of the table, listen to the sound of the room, or even notice the smell nearby. These small details will help you recall the place quickly later.
Connect new things with what you know. When you learn new knowledge, your brain naturally connects it with what you have already learned. So it is wise to connect new information with your own life experience. You can do this by using personal examples or telling short stories. For example, if you learn the new word “generous”, you can use the word “kind” to understand the similar meaning.
Teach what you’ve learned to others. It's also a good way to teach what you’ve learned to others if you want to make your memory better. When you explain a difficult lesson to your classmates or family, you have to organize your ideas. This process helps you find out what you don’t fully understand and develop your memory.
In a word, these tips are good for improving memory. If you keep using these good ways, your memory will get better step by step.

A. Be thankful for the past.
B. Life is always the same.

A. A Special Birthday Gift for Me B. My Happy Childhood by the River
