Spring is one of the best times for hiking in national parks. Here are four parks offering some of the best trails (步道) this spring.
Zion National Park, Utah
Zion shines in spring with cool valley temperatures, a flowing Virgin River, and early cottonwood green. The famous Angels Landing is a 5.4-mile challenging hike with chains and exposed peaks, and a permit is needed. The Narrows is a river hike best done in spring when water levels are lower. For an easier walk, try the Emerald Pools and check its river conditions in advance.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee/North Carolina
With over 800 miles of trails, the Smokies are especially beautiful in spring when wildflowers like trillium and geranium cover the forest floor from late March through May. Popular hikes include the Alum Cave Trail, the challenging 8-mile Ramsey Cascades to the park’s tallest waterfall, and the accessible Laurel Falls trail. Arrive before 8 a.m. on weekends to avoid crowds.
Olympic National Park, Washington
Olympic offers three different hiking environments. The Hoh River Trail is a flat walk through old-growth forest. Second Beach is a short hike along the coast to tide pools and sea cliffs. Hurricane Ridge opens for mountain hiking as snow melts by late spring. Check mountain trail conditions online, while rainforest and coastal trails remain accessible all spring.
Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
Shenandoah offers many day hikes. Among them, Old Rag Mountain is a difficult 9-mile circuit with a rocky climb and 360° views. Easier options include Stony Man Trail and Dark Hollow Falls, a short walk to a waterfall best seen in early spring. Watch for icy or muddy sections on Shenandoah’s trails at this time of year.
21. What is required only for Angels Landing?
A. Arriving before 8 a.m. B. Getting a permit.
C. Checking river conditions. D. Purchasing chains.
22. Which park offers coastal hiking?
A. Zion National Park. B. Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
C. Olympic National Park. D. Shenandoah National Park.
23. What do we know about Shenandoah?
A. It offers hikes of varying difficulty.
B. It features wildflower blooms.
C. It is crowded in early spring.
D. It is best known for its waterfalls.
B
A few years ago, teenager Mia Heller read a newspaper article about water quality problems in her hometown of Warrenton, Virginia. Tests showed that the local water supply was heavily polluted with microplastics — tiny plastic particles that can harm human health. Worse still, the government would not fund water filtering (过滤) for the area. “It was up to people to provide their own filtration,” Mia recalled.
Soon after, Mia’s parents bought an advanced water filter for their home. But it needed constant upkeep. Watching her mother replace the filter membranes (滤膜) again and again, Mia had an idea, “I wanted to design a filter without membranes, to bring down costs and maintenance.”
Mia turned to ferrofluid (铁磁流体), a magnetic oil that can attach to microplastics. She started working on her idea in the summer of 2024. After many experiments in her garage and kitchen, she developed a model: a container with a spinning tube. The tube uses a magnetic liquid to remove tiny plastic pieces from water. It worked, but the ferrofluid couldn’t be reused — meaning the system still required frequent maintenance.
Unwilling to give up, Mia kept experimenting. After five rounds of redesign, she finally created a self-recycling system about the size of a flour bag. It contains three components: one for dirty water, one for the ferrofluid, and a small core unit where a magnet pulls microplastics out while recovering and reusing the ferrofluid. Her test results were impressive: this system removed 95.52% of microplastics and recycled 87.15% of the ferrofluid — outperforming many traditional treatment plants.
Her innovation earned her a place as a finalist at the 2025 Regeneron ISEF, the world’s largest high school science competition, where she received a special award for her low-cost, efficient design. “She is doing something that has to be done,” says toxicologist Matthew J. Campen, who believes with more investment, her system could improve even further.
24. What directly inspired Mia Heller to design water filter?
A. A newspaper article. B. The replacement of membranes.
C. The high cost of filters. D. A science competition.
25. What was the problem with Mia’s first model?
A. It failed to remove microplastics.
B. It depended on a costly spinning tube.
C. Its use was limited to her garage.
D. Its ferrofluid was non-reusable.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Mia’s breakthrough in the filter system.
B. Mia’s five rounds of redesign.
C. Mia’s opinion about treatment plants.
D. Mia’s next research plan.
27. What does Campen think of Mia’s filtration system?
A. It has already replaced traditional plants.
B. It is not affordable for poor families.
C. It needs more investment to reach its potential.
D. It is too difficult to put into practice.

In recent years, cities worldwide have been building wildlife corridors (廊道) — green passages that connect parks, forests, and wetlands to give animals safe routes through urban areas. Singapore has linked nature reserves with special paths for monkeys. The Netherlands has built hundreds of wildlife tunnels under highways. These projects reflect a simple, appealing idea: help wildlife move freely, and biodiversity will thrive.
But a paradox has emerged from recent researches. While corridors have helped certain target species increase by 20 to 40 percent, ecologists are now uncovering unintended consequences. Maya Rodriguez, an ecologist at Cornell University, found that corridors also serve as highways for invasive species. “We saw Japanese knotweed and aggressive ants spreading through green passages into areas they could never have reached on their own,” she said.
A 2023 European study covering over 40 urban corridors revealed an even more surprising finding. Roads with green crossings recorded four times as many animal deaths as similar roads without them. Hedgehogs and foxes drawn to the corridors were guided straight into traffic at crossing points where natural cover was insufficient. “The very passage meant to protect them became a path to danger,” said researcher Lena Fischer in Berlin.
Another concern is disease transmission. Connecting animal populations also connects their diseases, allowing infections to spread more rapidly than they would naturally. In Britain, grey squirrels (松鼠) expanded their range through a corridor — but so did squirrelpox, a virus harmless to grey squirrels yet deadly to native red squirrels. Within two years, the local red squirrel population had declined by nearly 60 percent.
Corridor designers are not abandoning the concept. “The problem isn’t the idea; it’s the application,” says planner James Whitfield. He argues corridors must be wider, include more native plants, and combine with wildlife health monitoring. With careful design, he believes corridors can still fulfil their original promise — connecting habitats, not threats.
28. What does the author point out at the beginning of the text?
A. Wildlife corridors are widely adopted. B. Biodiversity is increasing in urban areas.
C. Green passages are a simple solution. D. Cities prefer tunnels to nature reserves.
29. What does the underlined word “paradox” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. An unknown scientific theory.
B. A statement that seems self-contradictory.
C. A solution to a difficult problem.
D. A benefit that has been clearly proven.
30. Why is the example of squirrelpox in Britain mentioned?
A. To prove invasive species are major threats.
B. To reveal corridors help squirrels expand.
C. To show corridors fuel the spread of diseases.
D. To stress red squirrels need protection.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The concept of corridors itself is problematic.
B. Monitoring plants is key to corridor success.
C. Designers are pessimistic about corridors’ future.
D. Corridors may still work if better designed.

Autocomplete suggestions are among the most annoying “useful” tools for writing. Integrated into online text input, they use AI to suggest what to write. They are meant to save time, but many find assessing and rewriting the suggested text takes longer than writing it yourself. More importantly, they can change how you express yourself — and even how you think.
A study was conducted by Cornell University. Researchers asked participants to fill in an online survey about hot social issues. Some were given an AI autocomplete answer deliberately biased toward one side. For example, participants were asked whether they agreed that self-driving cars should be allowed on roads. They might then receive an AI clue that disagreed with them. Across all topics, participants who saw the AI clues reported attitudes more in line with the AI’s position — including people who didn’t use the suggested text at all. Overall, those who saw the biased AI text shifted their positions toward those held by the AI.
Most strikingly, people didn’t tend to think the AI suggestions were biased, or notice that they had changed their own thinking. Warning them that they might be exposed to misinformation by the AI didn’t weaken the persuasive effect either. “We told people before, and after, to be careful, that the AI is going to be biased, but nothing helped. Their attitudes still shifted,” said Naaman, a professor of information science. “That is deeply troubling and a risk we need to take very seriously.”
The findings raise important questions about the power of AI writing tools. If simply seeing a biased suggestion can shift a person’s beliefs, what does that mean for a world where billions use AI writing assistants every day? And who decides what positions these tools will subtly promote? The study adds to research showing technology doesn’t just extend our abilities — it can reshape them.
32. What is the function of autocomplete tools in online text input?
A. To give writing tips. B. To collect writing expressions.
C. To assess writing content. D. To change writing styles.
33. Why were some participants given biased AI autocomplete answers?
A. To prove AI clues were biased.
B. To test AI clues’ impact on opinions.
C. To study AI autocomplete’s reaction speed.
D. To compare different AI systems.
34. How does Naaman feel about the effect of AI autocomplete?
A. Disappointed. B. Astonished. C. Concerned. D. Confused.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Study of AI Bias in Online Surveys
B. AI Autocomplete: A Time-Saving Tool Going Wrong
C. Why We Should Avoid AI in Online Text Input
D. How AI Autocomplete Quietly Shapes Our Opinions

Landslides can strike suddenly, posing serious threats to life and property, especially in hilly or mountainous areas. 36 Here are several effective preparedness strategies.
• 37
Those living in high-risk areas should familiarize themselves with local warning signs. Common signs include cracks in soil, unusual drainage (排水) changes, and increased rainfall. Residents should register for emergency alerts from local authorities, which ensures timely updates during heavy rain or geological events. Understanding the signs and risks allows for quicker reactions in emergencies.
• Develop an evacuation (疏散) plan.
An evacuation plan is vital for safety during a landslide. 38 These routes may vary depending on conditions like heavy rain or earthquakes. It’s essential to practice the plan regularly, which helps everyone remember what to do and where to go. That way, if a landslide occurs, people will take immediate action rather than behaving out of reaction.
• Create an emergency kit.
An emergency kit should include essential items for survival. Key supplies contain water, shelf-stable food, a flashlight, batteries, medications, copies of personal documents and cash. The kit should be kept in an easily accessible location at home. 39
• Make landscape and structural changes.
Carrying out landscape and structural improvements can lessen the risk of landslides. Techniques may include improving drainage systems and removing rock fragments from slopes. Proper landscaping can also help stabilize soil. Growing plants can aid in preventing soil loss. 40 This helps reduce the chances of movement. Additionally, retaining walls can be beneficial in steep areas. These structures help manage water runoff and support the ground.
A. Stay informed about the risks.
B. Strong root systems hold the soil together.
C. Being prepared is the first step toward ensuring safety.
D. Storing extra supplies can be helpful during extended emergencies.
E. To survive a landslide, it is crucial to understand the risks involved.
F. Residents at the base of a hill should identify multiple escape routes.
G. Regularly check and update its contents to ensure everything is in working order

Like millions of devoted fans, I had rushed to book my ticket for Spider-Man: Brand New Day months before its release, and made careful preparations to enjoy the film on Friday.
The day finally came. Filled with excitement, I arrived at the theater an hour early. After collecting my ticket, I found a seat in the waiting area. More and more moviegoers arrived, and soon there were no empty seats left.
Not far away, a boy in a school uniform was holding a Spider-Man toy, talking excitedly about the superhero, while an elderly lady stood beside him, smiling politely, clearly knowing little about such movies.
When I got up to buy my favorite snacks and drinks, I left my pen on the chair to mark it as taken. But when I returned, my seat — the one I had left with my pen still on it — was taken by the boy with the Spider-Man toy.
“Excuse me, little guy. This is my seat — I left my pen here,” I said, my voice firm. The boy looked up at me, biting his lip, but did not rise. The elderly lady hurried over at once, and on learning what had happened, she apologized to me and took the boy’s hand to leave. Yet the boy wouldn’t move. “But Grandma is tired from standing so long,” he murmured, his eyes fixed on the floor. “I just wanted her to sit down for a minute.”
His grandmother sighed softly and explained to me that the boy’s parents were at work today, so she had to accompany him here. He had been looking forward to this movie for a long time.
Hearing this, I felt my annoyance melt away. Smiling, I told them to keep the seat, handing the boy one of my snacks as a peace offering. We chatted happily about the movie until the ticket check began.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
