Last spring, my neighbor Donna and I, both in our seventies, spent several hours in the glorious sunshine enjoying the new season. When it was time to sit down and relax, Donna pulled out her red metal chair from her garage, and I sat on an overturned plastic bucket. It was fun to catch up on the news that we had missed during the long winter indoors.
However, over the next few days, it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable. Donna decided we needed a bench. After ruling out unsuitable options from local stores, she found a perfect one online. The next day it arrived. Excitedly, she opened the box and started putting it together. We proudly highfived each other as the pieces joined up and the bench started to look like one. After a few minutes’ assistance from a neighbour, it was assembled. What’s more, it was ideal for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats.
Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna shouted back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually evolved — after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he declared it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating (冥想)”, adding yet another name.
Last fall, with the temperature falling, our outdoor days come to an end. We were faced with one dilemma — what to do about it in the winter? Well, we sat down and thought and meditated and decided to put it in Donna’s garage for the winter.
When I glimpsed it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes. But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm sunshine, and we neighbours are ready to welcome “The Bench” back into our lives.
24. Why did Donna decide to replace the chair and bucket?
A. To avoid unsuitable choices.
B. To get better seating for chats.
C. To attract more neighbors.
D. To adapt to warmer weather.
25. How did the bench get its various names?
A. From items placed on it.
B. From seasonal discussions.
C. From Donna’s creative ideas.
D. From users’ activities on it.
26. Why are pots and boxes mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To suggest the flowers would soon be planted.
B. To describe the bench’s practical use in winter.
C. To show the bench was not serving its purpose.
D. To explain why the bench needed winter storage.
27. What does“The Bench”represent at the story’s end?
A. A symbol of community bonds.
B. A solution to the aging problem.
C. A reminder of the past winter.
D. A memory of a valued online order.

The trademark lawsuit between Louis Vuitton and Molly Tea looks like a simple commercial conflict, yet it exposes our deep trouble of collective cultural aphasia (失语) and the loss of discourse power over traditional Chinese patterns. Though the court’s ruling follows the law, many Chinese people feel upset. It’s said that the four-petal floral pattern LV uses to protect its trademark may have come from Tang-dynasty treasure flower patterns and ancient persimmon calyx patterns, which have been Chinese public cultural treasures for thousands of years. However, they now become exclusive commercial symbols owned by an overseas brand.
Many netizens publicly consider it a “reverse exploitation”, which results from our long-time ignorance of traditional patterns. For centuries, treasure flowers, cloud patterns and Hui patterns decorate ancient paintings, porcelain and buildings, carrying Chinese beauty and good wishes. However, we have seldom systematically registered or protected them with IP (intellectual property) rights. Foreign brands have long absorbed inspiration from Chinese ancient patterns, made small changes and completed global trademark registrations. On the contrary, domestic brands use our ancestors’ patterns casually without awareness of property rights. They only realize these cultural symbols have been occupied by foreign capital when lawsuits arrive. This is typical cultural aphasia: we admire the beauty of ancient patterns, but fail to guard their legal rights; we love national trend aesthetics (美学), but lack a complete system to protect traditional culture.
Collective cultural aphasia may not merely allow foreign brands to privatize those symbols, but also block the development of domestic Chinese-style industries. If local brands face huge fines every time they use native ancient patterns, it will be hard to pass down traditional beauty. For a long time, we only enjoy the artistic heritage left by our ancestors passively, instead of actively registering patterns, building digital databases and perfecting relevant laws. As a result, precious cultural resources may fall into the hands of foreign businesses.
Joint efforts are essential to fix this problem. The government should build a public pattern database and clarify usage rules. Enterprises need to value traditional cultural IP and create original Chinese-style works. With enhanced cultural confidence, we can safeguard our unique cultural symbols and let Eastern aesthetics develop sustainably.
28.What does the underlined phrase “reverse exploitation” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Domestic brands use foreign classic patterns.
B.Chinese firms recover cultural symbols via lawsuits.
C.Courts fine foreign brands for copying local designs.
D.Foreign brands profit from Chinese cultural resources.
29.Why do domestic brands easily get into trademark trouble?
A.They simply copy foreign brands.
B.They lack IP protection awareness.
C.They fail to build digital databases.
D.They refuse to follow the new laws.
30.What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A.Foreign brands seize our traditional patterns.
B.Heritage is not appreciated or well-protected.
C.Cultural silence leads to multiple harmful outcomes.
D.High fines stop China passing down traditional beauty.
31.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Value of Traditional Floral Patterns
B.Ways to Register Traditional Chinese Patterns
C.Cultural Aphasia Reflected in the Pattern Lawsuit
D.Closure of the Conflict Between LV and Molly Tea

For decades, marine researchers have faced major obstacles in ocean conservation. Remote, dark coastal waters shelter rare marine species, largely inaccessible to human divers. Traditional cameras perform poorly in dim conditions, and costly human surveys cover less than 3 percent of global shallow marine areas yearly. To solve these problems, a modern AI bioacoustics (生物声学的) monitoring system has been developed to boost conservation efficiency.
Jointly created by environmental tech teams and marine reserves, this innovative system adopts low-cost underwater microphones to record complex ocean soundscapes. Equipped with advanced machine learning technology, it is able to identify various marine species according to their unique acoustic (声音的) features automatically. Compared with traditional approaches, it reduces survey costs by 62 percent and expands detectable sea areas by over 18 times. Inspired by dolphins’ echolocation, its bionic algorithm (算法) can block interference from waves and ship engines, accurately recognizing faint and mixed underwater sounds.
In a 12-month field study off Ghana’s western coast, Dr. Lena Marquez’s team placed 46 solar-powered hydrophones (水听器). The AI uncovered three locally extinct fish species, missed by human divers’ annual searches for five years. It also locates hidden seagrass and coral habitats overlooked by humans. Guided by its data, local fishermen adopted seasonal fishing bans, raising young fish populations by 41 percent in eight months.
Nevertheless, the system has two noticeable limitations. It fails to identify silent marine creatures such as shellfish with no acoustic signals. Additionally, its high-precision analysis demands steady internet access and basic digital training, which many remote island regions lack. To overcome these obstacles, researchers are optimizing offline data processing systems and offering free professional training for coastal residents in relevant regions.
This bionic AI technology marks a significant breakthrough in marine ecological protection. Rather than isolating technology from natural ecosystems, it learns and follows natural biological rules to repair damaged ocean habitats. As affordable hydrophones and open-source AI programs gain global popularity, local coastal communities are empowered to guard marine resources effectively, turning abstract ocean protection theories into practical daily action.
32.What is a key advantage of the new AI system?
A.It functions well in dark environment.
B.It can operate without any workers on site.
C.It makes marine surveys much more efficient.
D.It’s able to cover less than half sea area worldwide.
33.What can we learn about the field study in Ghana?
A.It improved adult fish population quickly.
B.It was influenced by local fishing activities.
C.It relied on human divers’ repeated searches.
D.It found some previously unseen local fish species.
34.What is one shortcoming of the bioacoustic system?
A.It cannot work in bright seawater.
B.It is unable to detect soundless sea life.
C.It ignores human fishing activities.
D.It needs no digital training for users.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.AI Technology Empowers Ocean Conservation
B.New Rules for Global Ocean Fishing
C.Hidden Marine Habitats Discovered by Divers
D.Advanced Ways to Improve Internet Service

How to Avoid Media Multitasking
When you study or work at home, have you grown used to keeping multiple screens on? TVs, laptops, phones — before you know it, you suffer from tired eyes, sore shoulders and mental exhaustion. Manoush Zomorodi, the host of TED Radio Hour, calls this media multitasking, which gives your brain too much information to process all at once. 36 .
●Practise single-tasking
Human brains cannot truly multitask. They just switch rapidly between activities, which consumes mental energy, lowers efficiency and causes errors. 37 . For deep-thinking tasks like reading or solving problems, this rule applies most.
● 38
Looking through news or short videos when tired does not refresh your brain — it adds to tiredness. A real break means stepping away from screens. For work that keeps you on screens, take a few minutes every 30 minutes to stand, walk, or stretch, which eases mental tension.
●Guarantee quality sleep
Poor sleep or regular late nights leave mental tiredness unrelieved, resulting in continuous distraction and exhaustion. 39 . To solve the problem, you need to develop healthy bedtime routines. Avoiding screens before bedtime and sticking to a regular sleep schedule help complete brain recovery.
●Rebuild deep concentration
40 . You can regain it through practice. Set fixed screen-free reading sessions. Don’t expect long focus at first; when your mind wanders, pause and return. Gradually extend your focus time. With steady practice, your brain will readapt to deep thinking.
A.Stop resting on phones
B.Set a time limit on phone use
C.She offers some science-based strategies to help accordingly
D.Therefore, finish one task entirely before moving on to the next
E.Constant information overload weakens your continuous attention
F.Adjusting sleep habits helps you instantly relieve mental exhaustion
G.Worse still, it will reduce the effects of other mental recovery strategies

“You’re all that I need…” A soft, melodic tune drifted from the bathroom, mixed with the sound of running water. Arav and Anaya, who were busy building blocks in the living room, froze for a second. They exchanged a puzzled look, then burst out laughing and started wiggling to the rhythm.
“Is Papa really singing that modern song?” asked seven-year-old Anaya, her big eyes wide with disbelief.
“Looks like our dad has finally upgraded his playlist!” grinned ten-year-old Arav.
This was a home where laughter never ran out. Arav was a curious boy — sometimes responsible like a little adult, sometimes mischievous (淘气的) enough to drive his mother crazy. Anaya, sweet as candy, was always bubbling with wild ideas. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows and family photos on the wall seemed to smile along.
As Papa came out, Anaya dashed over like a tiny rocket and hugged his leg. “Papa, you should have been a professional singer!” she declared.
Papa bent down, pinched her cheek, and gave a shy, gentle smile.
Just then, Mummy walked in from the kitchen with a plate of fruit. “Well, your father wasn’t just any singer — he was the star vocalist of the college band! Every campus festival ended with his solo performance,” she said, her eyes sparkling.
“Wow!” Arav’s eyes lit up. “Then you should join the community singing competition next month. You’d win for sure!”
Papa waved his hand, his tone light but with a faint trace of gloom. “Oh, son, that’s ancient history. Now it’s time for work.” He chuckled and got dressed.
Once Papa left for the office, the two children immediately surrounded Mummy, begging for more stories. Mummy told them how Papa once formed a band, wrote love songs, and even dreamed of a music career — but gradually set aside his microphone to support the family. Arav and Anaya listened, fascinated. A secret plan began to grow in their little hearts.
That night, tucked under their blankets, they whispered excitedly. “We have to make Papa sing again!” Arav said.
“But how?” Anaya asked.
