Hands-on experience instills steel, empathy in students
Chen Yijie, a 20-year-old finance student at Renmin University of China, still remembers her first baking class. For three Wednesdays in a row, she spent two to three hours in a school kitchen with two classmates, making a chiffon cake in a group of three. "It was really fun," she said. "It really developed team cooperation."
The class was not a club activity. In 2020, a guideline from China's Ministry of Education made labor education compulsory: every undergraduate must finish at least 32 class hours of it before graduation. Since then, universities have opened all kinds of courses. Some are taught in a kitchen; others take students outdoors. Students can learn to bake cakes, fix leaky faucets, prune trees, or harvest bamboo fungus, a local mushroom.
Do young people really want such classes? At Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Zhao Xiaoye, who helps run campus services, says yes. The cooking classes are among the most popular. "Every time we announce our cooking micro-classroom, the spots disappear within seconds," she said. Once, 70 places for a class on making qingtuan, a green rice ball eaten in spring, were taken in less than three minutes.
Outdoor work is just as popular. When the school opened a session of clearing stones and planting flowers and vegetables, more than 100 students signed up within five minutes. "They're curious, they want to learn," Zhao said.
For Zhao, the point is not the cake or the young tree. It is the moment when a student who has never held a tool learns what work is and begins to understand the people who do it every day. That, she believes, is where empathy starts.

Scottish wrens may be evolving into new species through island gigantism
On a few small Scottish islands, a very small bird is quietly becoming something new. The bird is the wren, one of the smallest birds in Britain. Researchers from the University of Birmingham studied four subspecies of the wren found on Shetland, Fair Isle, the Outer Hebrides and St Kilda. Their work appeared in the Evolutionary Journal of the Linnean Society.
The change is one of size. On islands, animals often grow larger than their relatives on the mainland. A wren on mainland Britain weighs about 7 to 10 grams. On St Kilda, the same kind of bird weighs 13 to 16 grams. The largest St Kilda wrens are more than twice the size of the smallest mainland ones. Scientists call this pattern island gigantism, and it is not rare: giant tortoises in the Galápagos and the dodo of Mauritius are famous examples. By one count, the St Kilda wren is among the top 25% of such cases worldwide.
Islands matter more than their size suggests. They cover only a small part of the earth, but hold about 20% to 30% of the world's species. Cut off from the mainland, animals there often change in their own way.
"We found that all four Scottish wren subspecies are genetically distinct from the wrens of mainland Britain," said Dr Michał Jezierski, the first author of the study. "It is likely they are on their way to becoming new species."
Not every island bird changes in the same way, however. The wrens on Fair Isle and the Outer Hebrides are still close to mainland birds in their genes. Two islands lying side by side can follow very different paths.

B.To compare birds with other kinds of animals.
C.To show how long island gigantism takes.
D.To give famous examples of island gigantism.
30.What does Dr Jezierski say about the four Scottish wren subspecies?
A.They may be becoming new species.
B.They have already become new species.
C.They are the same as mainland wrens.
D.They cannot live on other islands.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text?

Just 1,000 More Steps a Day Linked to Better Mental Health in Teens
Teenagers do not have to run for hours to feel better. A study of 5,515 adolescents in the United States found that walking just 1,000 to 2,000 more steps a day was linked to better mental health. The finding is good news for busy students. The work was done by researchers at King's College London and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
The teenagers all took part in a long-term study of brain development and health, the largest of its kind in the country. It follows them as they grow up, and it runs at 21 sites. At the age of 11 or 12, they wore a Fitbit for three weeks so that researchers could count their steps. A wearable device records far better than a questionnaire, in which people often forget or guess.
The results formed a clear line. Teenagers who took fewer than 5,000 steps a day had the most mental health symptoms. Those who took about 8,000 steps had fewer. The fewest were reported by those walking more than 12,000 steps a day.
The brain changed too, though only a little. Young people who walked more had a slightly thicker cortex in two areas — one has to do with movement, the other with controlling feelings. The difference was small, but the researchers saw it clearly. Interestingly, the number of steps showed no link with school performance.
"It is not an all-or-nothing situation," said Dr Amanda Paluch, an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, who worked on the study. "Adolescents don't need to be elite athletes to benefit." In other words, a small increase is already enough to make a difference.
32.How did the researchers count the teenagers' steps?
A.With a wearable device.
B.Through a questionnaire.
C.By counting steps at school.
D.By keeping a walking diary.
33.Which teenagers had the fewest mental health symptoms?
A.Those taking fewer than 5,000 steps a day.
B.Those walking more than 12,000 steps a day.
C.Those taking about 8,000 steps a day.
D.Those walking 1,000 extra steps a day.
34.What did the study find about the brain?
A.The whole brain grew much larger.
B.The cortex became much thicker.
C.Walking improved school performance.
D.Two brain areas grew a little thicker.
35.What does Dr Paluch mean by saying "It is not an all-or-nothing situation"?
A.Walking is useless without a coach.
B.Only long runs can really help.
C.Small increases can also help teenagers.
D.All teenagers must become top athletes.

Living with Roommates for the First Time
For many freshmen, senior high brings something new: sharing a bedroom with five or six classmates who were strangers a week ago. It can become one of the best parts of school life, or one of the hardest. You cannot pick your roommates, but you can decide how to live with them. 36
Talk about daily habits first.
Most fights between roommates start with small things — lights, noise, bedtime and tidiness. In the first week, sit down together and talk about them. 37 Write the answers on a piece of paper and put it on the door. Then nobody has to guess, and ten minutes of talk can save a term of small arguments.
Keep your things on your own side.
A room shared by six people gets untidy very fast. 38 It also means asking before you borrow anything, even a pen. Shoes left on the floor soon become everybody's problem, and a clean floor is everybody's job, not one person's.
39
Everyone has a different idea of "clean". Do not wait until you are angry. If one roommate never cleans the floor, suggest a cleaning list with names on it. Say what is wrong, not who is wrong. A list works better than a complaint, and nobody loses face.
Give each other some space.
Living together does not mean doing everything together. 40 Some students need quiet time after a long day, and a roommate who sits reading in silence is not being cold. Friendship grows faster when nobody feels watched all the time.
A.Try to solve small problems early.
B.Eating together is a good way to make friends.
C.A few simple rules can make it much easier.
D.Choose your roommates before term starts.
E.Ask everyone when they get up, study and sleep.
F.Start by keeping your own things in order.
G.It is fine to study or walk alone for a while.

21.D 【题型】细节理解 【依据】Book Swap Corner 段 "Open from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday in October"。A 是 Reading with a Teacher 的时间,B 取 Note 里的闭馆时间,C 把下午换成上午,三项均为同文干扰。
22.A 【题型】细节理解 【依据】One-minute Book Talk 段末句 "Sign up at the library desk by 20 October."。
23.B 【题型】细节理解 【依据】同段 "The best three talks will be put on the school website.",put on ≈ shown。
24.C 【题型】细节理解 【依据】第一段 "she spent two to three hours in a school kitchen with two classmates, making a chiffon cake in a group of three"。A、B 与"三人一组"矛盾,D 的 cooking show 由 cooking 一词派生。
25.B 【题型】细节理解 【依据】第二段 "every undergraduate must finish at least 32 class hours of it before graduation"。
26.A 【题型】细节理解 【依据】第三段引语 "the spots disappear within seconds",70 个名额 less than three minutes 抢光,即名额秒光。
27.D 【题型】推理判断 【依据】末段 "begins to understand the people who do it every day",即理解劳动与劳动者。
28.C 【题型】细节理解 【依据】第二段 "On St Kilda, the same kind of bird weighs 13 to 16 grams",远重于大陆的 7 to 10 grams。
29.D 【题型】写作目的(例子题) 【依据】第二段 "Scientists call this pattern island gigantism ... giant tortoises in the Galápagos and the dodo of Mauritius are famous examples",举例为支撑"岛屿巨型化"这一概念。
30.A 【题型】细节理解 【依据】第四段引语 "It is likely they are on their way to becoming new species",likely ≈ may,on their way ≈ becoming。
31.B 【题型】主旨大意 【依据】全文高频词为 wren / Scottish islands / gigantism / new species,标题句 "Scottish wrens may be evolving into new species through island gigantism" 已点明。
32.A 【题型】细节理解 【依据】第二段 "they wore a Fitbit for three weeks" 与 "A wearable device records far better than a questionnaire"。
33.B 【题型】细节理解 【依据】第三段末句 "The fewest were reported by those walking more than 12,000 steps a day"。
34.D 【题型】细节理解 【依据】第四段 "Young people who walked more had a slightly thicker cortex in two areas"。B 把 slightly 换成 much,程度过强;C 与末句 "showed no link with school performance" 相反;A 把两个区域说成整个大脑。
35.C 【题型】句意猜测 【依据】末段引语后紧接 "a small increase is already enough to make a difference",且下句说"不必是精英运动员"。
38.F 本段讲物品归位,F 与后句 "It also means asking before you borrow anything" 构成递进,且 Start by 与 also 呼应。
40.G 本段讲给彼此空间,G 的 study or walk alone 与 does not mean doing everything together 同向,并与后句 reading in silence 相接。
41.B run the third leg
42.D 由后半句 fell onto the track 可知接力棒没接住,missed his hand 意为"从他手中滑脱"。
For a second nobody moved 与下句 Then a boy ... ran past
44.C 捡起棒后追赶,rushed after him 与后句 "ran as if the ground was burning" 一致。looked after 是短语陷阱(照顾),walked 与追赶矛盾,shouted 与 picked up 不连贯。
long、deep 不与 gap 搭配,small 与 We finished fourth 矛盾。
won 相反,missed、broken 与 the race 搭配不当。
47.D never talk to me again
48.C 上文问 "Whose fault was it?",答 "Ours" 与"A relay is four people, not one"一致,故为名词性物主代词 Ours。
54.D 径赛成绩用 time,I don't remember our time 与后句"只记得那句话"构成取舍。
55.A 末句升华,the lesson I learned 回扣"four people, not one"。
at the age of 70 为固定搭配,句首大写。
be able to do 为固定结构。
learn to do 学会做(秭归刺绣)。
not just ... but ...
Dear Peter,
I'm writing to tell you about a volunteer activity I took part in last month.
It was held on a Saturday morning in the city library near our school. With ten classmates, I helped put about 2,000 books back on the shelves and guided readers to the right floor. We also read stories to a group of children.
The work was tiring but rewarding. I learned how to work with others and how to be patient. Helping people made me feel that even a small act can matter.
Have you ever done volunteer work? I'd love to hear about it.
Yours,
Li Hua
衔接上用 With ten classmates 交代同伴,用 tiring but rewarding 转折,用词控制在必修一范围(shelf, guide, patient, rewarding 加注即可)。
