There must be few occasions when it would be really rude to refuse an invitation to hit someone you’ve just met with your fist! But I’m in one of those right now. I’m in a rehearsal room in a theatre with a group of actors, facing up to stage fighting director Kate Waters. She wants me to hit her with my fist. But fear not, this is all strictly pretend! Kate, known in the industry as Kombat Kate, is giving a lesson on how actors fight each other without getting hurt.
Already a passionate martial arts expert from childhood, Kate did drama at university, and one of her courses introduced her to stage fighting. When she made inquiries about the possibility of teaching it as a career, she was told about the register of stage fight directors and the qualifications she’d need to be accepted into it. It was no small order: as well as a certificate in advanced stage fighting, she would need a black belt in karate and skill in fencing, a sport she’d never tried before. But she rose to the challenge and finally successfully became one of only two women on the official register.
Of course, a stage fight is just smoke and mirrors. In our lesson, Kate shows me how an actor will stand with his or her back to the audience ahead of a planned slap. When the slap comes it makes contact not with the skin but with the air: the actor hits his chest or leg to make the sound of the slap.
In the rehearsal room, I can’t resist asking Kate how she thinks she would do in a real fight. Would she give her attacker a hard time? She laughs, “Oh, I’d be awful,” she says. “I only know how to pretend.” I can’t help thinking, however, that she’s just being rather humble.
24. Why does Kate ask the author to hit her?
A. To show actors stage fighting skills.
B. To teach actors to defend themselves.
C. To help actors rehearse an action scene.
D. To attract actors’ interest in martial arts.
25. What was a challenge Kate faced in becoming a stage fight director?
A. She could not find a female teacher.
B. She had no prior experience in drama.
C. She had to master an unfamiliar sport.
D. She had trouble obtaining a certificate.
26. What do the underlined words “smoke and mirrors” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. A difficult technique.
B. A dangerous situation.
C. A well-planned lesson.
D. A misleading performance.
27. What does the author imply about Kate’s real fighting ability?
A. She relies a lot on tricks.
B. She may lack confidence in herself.
C. She might be better than she admits
D. She excels more at performing than fighting.
C
When a Los Angeles hospital authorized handwriting courses for its doctors, it highlighted a modern contradiction: in an era of digital perfection, the simple act of writing by hand remains critically important. The chief of staff explained to Science Daily, “Many of our physicians don't write clearly.” The consequences can be severe, as seen in an unfortunate case where a chemist's misreading of a doctor’s prescription led to a patient’s death.
Even though many medical records are now stored on computers, physicians still spend a lot of their time writing notes on charts or writing prescriptions by hand. Clarity in handwriting isn’t merely an aid to communication. In some significant way, writing by hand primes the brain for learning to read. Psychologists Mueller and Oppenheimer found that “Laptop note takers’ tendency to write down lectures verbatim rather than processing information and reframing it in their own words has a negative effect on learning.” In their experiments, students typing notes processed information shallowly, while those writing by hand were forced to summarize, leading to better understanding. The slower pace of pen and paper acts as a cognitive filter, activating the brain for deeper comprehension.
Yet, the skill is fading rapidly. Researchers worry that abandoning the pen for the keyboard will lead to any number of unforeseen negative consequences. Anne Mangen, who studies how technology transforms literacy, notes that typing, being more “abstract and unconnected,” could have profound implications; this decline is similar to a form of cultural pollution, a loss of a fundamental human capacity.
A common misconception is that we have simply traded an inefficient tool for a superior one. However, like the loss of face-to-face interaction, this trade for efficiency comes at a hidden cost. We are sacrificing irrecoverable ways of learning and knowing. Ultimately, a child who masters the keyboard but cannot sign their name is not a symbol of progress.
Handwriting is not a relic; it is a vital thread in the fabric of our cognition, and its wearing demands our immediate attention.
28. Why did the hospital introduce handwriting courses?
A. To follow the latest handwriting trend.
B. To prevent potential medical accidents.
C. To improve doctors’ handwriting skills.
D. To promote the use of handwritten records.
29. What can we learn from Mueller and Oppenheimer’s research?
A. Typing facilitates meaningful understanding.
B. Note-taking blocks verbatim comprehension.
C. Keyboarding ensures higher learning efficiency.
D. Handwriting benefits deeper cognitive engagement.
30. What is the cost of abandoning handwriting?
A. The pollution of a traditional culture.
B. The decline in communication efficiency.
C. The over-reliance on modern technologies.
D. The fading of an essential cognitive ability.
31. What does the author suggest we do?
A. Preserve handwriting as a tradition.
B. Encourage keyboard use in education.
C. Value the crucial role of handwriting.
D. Introduce handwriting courses widely.
D
Human well-being depends on the ability to navigate the social world. Such social skill depends on reliable feedback: acts of kindness may be met with gratitude; on other occasions, a misstep brings about a friend’s disapproval and recognition that an apology is needed. These moments are crucial for deepening trust and personal growth. Social life is rarely frictionless, because people are not perfectly in tune with one another. Yet it is precisely through such social friction that relationships deepen and moral understanding develops.
Sycophancy is the opposite of this friction. Many users experience this when AI enthusiastically agrees with their ideas or writing. In academic contexts, the consequence may be investing more time in an average idea. But as AI systems are increasingly consulted for guidance about relationships and conflicts, affirmation of this kind may shape how people interpret their own actions and their perspectives of others, and in turn, how they respond to conflict and whether they take responsibility when things go wrong.
Now imagine a world where people routinely consult a sycophantic AI about interpersonal conflicts or moral dilemmas. They are repeatedly assured that they are right, that others are wrong, and that no apology is needed. Over time, this patterned sycophancy may reshape expectations about what feedback should feel like. Individuals may begin to anticipate the same constant affirmation from real human beings. The cumulative effect is a reduction in tolerance for the very social friction through which accountability, perspective-taking, and growth occur.
An AI companion that is always “on your side” may keep users engaged and dependent. But it cannot teach them how to handle real relationships—how to disagree respectfully, repair damaged trust, or accept being wrong. Although AI could be improved to promote long-term personal development, such goals conflict with systems built to maximize user engagement. Challenging users or presenting uncomfortable truths is a sure way to drive them away. This tension raises fundamental ethical questions: Should we prioritize immediate emotional comfort or long-term social health? Who gets to decide? Addressing these challenges will require interdisciplinary collaboration among computer scientists, social scientists, ethicists, and policy makers.
32. What role does social friction play in relationships according to the author?
A. It generates positive feedback.
B. It guarantees harmonious relationships.
C. It causes open disapproval or conflicts.
D. It enhances social bonds and moral growth.
33. Which of the following is NOT a consequence of sycophantic AI?
A. Misguided judgment about one’s actions.
B. Reduced tolerance for interpersonal friction.
C. Weakened willingness to take responsibility.
D. Increased ability to resolve real-life conflicts
34. What prevents AI systems from being improved to challenge users?
A. Lack of technical capacity.
B. Conflicts with commercial interests.
C. Unawareness of its potential harm.
D. Absence of interdisciplinary collaboration.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward current AI systems?
A. Strictly neutral.
B. Strongly opposed.
C. Cautiously concerned.
D. Mildly supportive.

Mark, a diligent college student, balanced his academic pursuits with a part-time job at a bustling coffee shop in downtown Chicago. It was a chaotic Friday evening; the smell of roasted beans mixed with the impatient murmurs of a long queue.
When the “Closed” sign was finally turned over, Mark’s muscles ached for hours of standing. He dragged his tired feet to the counter, wiping away the spilled coffee and counting the cash register.
While checking the cash register, his heart suddenly skipped a beat. There, nestled among the bills, was an extra one hundred dollars—crisp, unfolded, and clearly out of place.
The memory hit him instantly. Earlier, a distracted businessman in a sharp gray suit had paid for his order with a large bill. Overwhelmed by endless orders and urgent shouts, Mark had been in a hurry to serve the next customer and forgot to give him the full change. The man, preoccupied with his phone calls, had hurried out without noticing.
To an ordinary person, it was just a mistake. But to Mark, it was a lifeline. That crisp bill represented his overdue rent and several days of groceries. The shop’s daily earnings were already substantial, and his manager rarely double-checked the extra cash carefully. He could easily slip the money into his pocket, and the difference would likely disappear into the store’s unclear accounts, unnoticed by anyone.
However, a heavy sense of guilt quickly clouded his mind, weighing him down like a stone. He glanced up at the blinking red light of the security camera in the corner, feeling as though it were judging him. He thought of his parents, who had always reminded him of the value of honesty despite their own financial struggles.
Standing in the silent, dimly lit shop, Mark found himself trapped in a fierce internal battle: the desperate relief of financial security against the heavy, inescapable weight of his morality.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Taking a deep breath, Mark made a decision.

A week later, a familiar figure walked into the coffee shop.

Text 1
M: Do you have experience with children?
W: Yeah. I babysat my niece for two years. Also, I tutored math at a summer camp. And I love organizing educational games for kids.
M: Perfect! Our kindergarten needs someone creative.
Text 2
M: On June 19th, 2025, in the town of Sopo, Colombia, 1,185 people gathered to taste cheese.
W: That must have been an amazing sight!
M: Absolutely! The Guinness World Records confirmed that this event set the record for the world’s largest cheese tasting.
Text 3
M: Look at this old video. It was filmed 20 years ago at Aunt Francine’s 30th birthday party. We were just kids back then.
W: Yeah. I was only 5 years old at the time.
Text 4
M: Shanghai has started outdoor “walking smoking” control measures. Some smokers find these measures too strict.
W: I disagree. I think these measures should have been introduced much earlier. I sincerely hope they can be carried out nationwide.
M: Same here.
Text 5
W: Mr. Warren, your book about high school life is a bestseller. Is this your first work?
M: No. I actually wrote a book during college, but only two copies were sold. It took me a while to find the courage to write again after I started working.
Text 6
M: I highly recommend wooden fences. They have a natural feel and would beautifully decorate your garden.
W: Wooden fences are indeed more eco-friendly, but they don’t seem strong enough. My goal is to keep my neighbor’s dog from entering my garden and digging holes in the grass.
M: In that case, I’d suggest materials like stone or metal.
W: Metal fences tend to rust, so I’ll choose the other one.
Text 7
W: My neighborhood group is starting a “tool library” where people can borrow things like drills, ladders, or gardening tools instead of buying them. It’s a great way to save money and cut down on waste.
M: That’s a brilliant idea! At home, I catch the cold water that runs before the shower heats up and use it to water my plants.
W: That’s awesome! I also use a “freeze and reuse” trick. When I have leftover coffee, I freeze it in ice cube trays to use for iced coffee later, so it doesn’t go to waste
M: These are simple changes, but they make a big difference!
Text 8
M: The Times and Sunday Times Best Beach Guide has announced the UK’s best beaches.
W: Which beach won this year’s top spot?
M: Portstewart Strand was chosen as Beach of the Year 2025. It’s also the 2025 regional winner for Northern Ireland. The regional winner for Wales was Shell Island.
W: I know Shell Island. It’s home to one of Europe’s largest camping sites. Well, I guess Bude, a beautiful seaside town in Cornwall, took the regional title in Southwest England.
M: Exactly! How did you know that?
W: Bude is the birthplace of a famous beach cleaning event—the #2minutebeachclean campaign. I once took part in it. Alright, now tell me the regional winner for Scotland.
M: It’s Seacliff Beach, a private beach…
Text 9
W: Michael, do you remember that not long ago, the Royal Mint Museum held a short-story competition themed “Sustainable Futures”?
M: Of course. The winners would be selected by the famous host Michaela Strachan, with illustrations for the winning entry created by guest artist Bronwen James.
W: The winners have been announced! Myra Saindane has won first prize for her story Myra’s Green Awakening. Myra received a set of coins for herself and £5,000 worth of equipment and books for her school library.
M: That’s fantastic! So, what is the story about?
W: It follows the story of a little girl’s journey to India and how it inspires her reflections on sustainability.
M: It sounds very inspiring. I’m also curious about the second and third prizes.
W: The second-place story is The Last Dodo’s Dream, written by Johan Kaushal. The story is told from the first-person perspective of the last dodo, an extinct bird. The third prize went to Ethan Wilson for his story Bertie the Water Bottle.
M: I’m most interested in the second-place story. It’s a really creative way to talk about protecting animals, isn’t it?
W: Absolutely!
Text 10
Emerging research links chilli peppers to better health. “Data suggests spicy food can enhance feelings of fullness and help with weight control,” says Dr. Long Nguyen, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. A 2020 study conducted by Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine found that people who had lots of spicy chilli peppers were 25% less likely to die sooner than expected, compared to those who rarely or never ate them. Kiran Campbell, a famous dietitian, recommends people to have spicy meals 2 to 4 times per week. John Hayes, a professor of food science at Pennsylvania State University, found that when people experience spicy food, their behavior changes: They chew more slowly. Slowing down allows people to eat smaller portions, which can contribute to healthier weight. So how should chilli peppers be prepared to maximize their health benefits? Fresh chilli peppers are probably healthier than processed ones. Research shows that people who regularly have chopped-up fresh chilli peppers, instead of dried or ground versions, enjoyed lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Another study found that eating raw or lightly cooked chilli peppers is best for preserving their nutrients, such as vitamin C.

【答案】A
故选A。
【答案】C
【解析】推理判断题:最后一段中Kate说自己真实打斗能力“会很糟糕”“只会假装”,但作者说“I can’t help thinking, however, that she’s just being rather humble”,即作者认为她只是谦虚,暗示她实际打斗能力可能比她承认的更好。故选C。
【答案】D
【解析】细节理解题:根据第一段“Yet it is precisely through such social friction that relationships deepen and moral understanding develops”可知,作者认为社交摩擦的作用是加深关系、促进道德理解,即增强社交纽带与道德成长。故选D。
【答案】B
【解析】推理判断题:末段“such goals conflict with systems built to maximize user engagement. Challenging users or presenting uncomfortable truths is a sure way to drive them away”说明,挑战用户与追求用户参与度最大化的商业利益相冲突,因此阻碍AI改进。故选B。
35. What is the author’s attitude toward current AI systems?
A. Strictly neutral.
B. Strongly opposed.
C. Cautiously concerned.
D. Mildly supportive.

A. delivering接生、递送;B. adopting收养;C. appreciating欣赏、感激;D. naming命名。 故选A。
A. looking into调查;B. reporting on报道;C. responding to应对、处理;D. watching over照看。
A. community社区;B. salary薪水;C. entertainment娱乐;D. lifestyle生活方式。
A. fades消退、逐渐消失;B. spreads传播;C. returns返回;D. remains保持。 与后文“a longing for home takes hold”形成对比,兴奋消退、思家之情上升。故选A。
A. control控制;B. choose选择;C. purchase购买;D. borrow借。
When dusk falls over Qingyun Hutong, pushing open a weathered wooden door ____56____ (produce) a subtle but decisive shift in time. Outside, the steady rhythm of the modern city remains, while inside, history takes over. Cold light slides down beams that have stood for more than four ____57____ (century), and a layered soundscape echoes through the corridors. Audiences become participants in the story unfolding around them.
The scene is part of Mysterious Cases of the Ming Wanli Era, ____58____ immersive theater production currently ____59____ (stage) at the Beijing Print Guild Hall. It has attracted growing attention and is scheduled to continue through the end of 2026. Written and directed by Miao Jiuling, the production enters China’s ____60____ (rapid) expanding immersive theater market with an ambitious creative vision and a spatial strategy ____61____ (redefine) the relationship between performer and audience.
The venue is not merely a background ____62____ an active narrative component. The Ming Dynasty Guild Hall, with its “temple-front, hall-rear” layout and three-courtyard arrangement, generates a layered progression of space ____63____ signals narrative shifts. Historically, it functioned ____64____ a ceremonial space and a performance venue.
Miao says what first drew him was not the ____65____ (architecture) form but “density of information”. “This is not a stage,” he says. “It is a system that has hosted countless acts.” In this sense, theater becomes not the use of space, but the reactivation of its internal logic.
此处考查not merely... but...
63 【答案】which/that 【解析】考查that/which 定语从句关系代词。

Dear Jenny,
I really like the idea of the English short-video competition. My choice falls on “The joy of travelling”.
Travelling, which opens doors to diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes, never fails to inspire creativity. By capturing fleeting moments—a local festival or a sunrise over mountains—we can share stories that words alone cannot tell. Moreover, such videos encourage viewers to embrace curiosity and connect with the world emotionally.
I believe this theme promises both visual appeal and profound meaning. I would be glad if you could consider my suggestion. Looking forward to your decision!
Yours,
Li Hua
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Taking a deep breath, Mark made a decision.

Taking a deep breath, Mark made a decision. Instead of pocketing the money to cover his rent and living costs, he resolved to return the hundred dollars to its owner. He searched through the store’s sales records and the surveillance footage, carefully noting down the time the businessman placed his order. He then reported the whole incident to his manager right away. Moved by his honesty, the manager helped him post a notice outside the shop with detailed information to look for the customer. Though still worried about his tight budget, Mark felt a huge load lifted off his chest, proud that he stuck to his principle.
A week later, a familiar figure walked into the coffee shop. It was exactly the businessman in the gray suit. He had realized he never received his full change days ago and came to check the shop. Mark greeted him warmly and handed back the one hundred dollars, explaining the whole accident. Deeply impressed by Mark’s integrity, the businessman praised him sincerely. What’s more, he offered Mark a well-paid weekend tutoring job for his child. Honesty not only brought Mark peace of mind but also rewarded him with a brighter way to ease his financial trouble.
1. To an ordinary person, it was just a mistake. But to Mark, it was a lifeline.(To... it was... But to...
2. He glanced up at the blinking red light of the security camera in the corner, feeling as though it were judging him.(feeling 现在分词作伴随状语,as though 后用虚拟语气,把心虚与自我审判写活)
3. Mark found himself trapped in a fierce internal battle: the desperate relief of financial security against the heavy, inescapable weight of his morality.(find oneself trapped in...
4. Honesty not only brought Mark peace of mind but also rewarded him with a brighter way to ease his financial trouble.(not only...but also...
