In a lagoon (泄湖),just 10 minutes by boat from Malé, the Maldivian capital, a floating (漂浮) city, big enough to house 20,000 people, is being constructed (建造)。 Designed in a pattern (模式) similar to brain coral (脑珊瑚),the city will consist of 5.000 floating units including houses, restaurants, shops and schools, with rivers running in between. Residents start to move in by early 2024, and the whole city is due to be completed by 2027. The project is not meant as a wild experiment: it’s being built as a practical solution to the reality of sea level rise. Containing 1.190 low-lying islands, the Maldives is one of the world’s weakest nations to climate change. Eighty percent of its land area is less than one metre above sea level, and with sea level projected to rise up to a metre by the end of the century, almost the entire country would go under the water. The units are constructed in a local shipyard, then pulled to the floating city. Once in position, they are joined to a large underwater concrete frame which is fixed to the seabed on telescopic (可伸缩的) steel poles that let it gently flow with the waves. Koen Olthuis, founder of Waterstudio, the company that designed the city, said that the possible environmental effect of the structure was assessed by local coral experts and permitted by government authorities before construction began. The aim is for the city to be self-sufficient and have all the functions as one on land. There will be electricity powered mainly by solar energy. As an alternative to air conditioning, the city will use deep sea water cooling, which involves pumping cold water from the deep sea into the lagoon, helping to save energy. 4. What is the purpose of building the floating city? A. To develop its tourism. B. To get more living space. C. To perform a wild experiment. D. To deal with the rising sea level. 5. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The feature of the city. B. The location of the city. C. The construction process of the city. D. The building materials of the city. 6. Where is the electricity mostly produced from? A. Wind energy. B. Solar energy. C. Water energy. D. Wave energy. 7. What can be learned from the last paragraph? A. The city is environmentally friendly. B. The city has no modern equipment. C. The life of the city is not very convenient. D. The government authorities love the life here. C High school students perform better on tests if they are in a classroom with a view(视野)of a green space, instead of a windowless room or a room with a view of built-up space, according to research from the University of Illinois Department of Landscape Architecture. “It is the first to show a relationship between studying with a green view and students performance, said William Sullivan head of the research team. It’s a significant finding that if you have a green view outside your window, you’ ll do better on tests.”Sullivan hopes the results of their research will lead to policy(政策)changes. Changes in school design, for example“would be a much better thing than any of the things we spend money on in secondary education today ,Sullivan said. The research included 94 students at five central Illinois high schools Students were randomly assigned(随机分配)to one of three kinds of classrooms-windowless, with a window looking out onto built-up space, or with a window looking out onto green space. Each kind of classroom had a similar size and layout. The students took part in one-on-one experiments in which they did 30 minutes of activities that included a proofreading exercise, a speech and a math exercise. Following the activities the students were given an attention test which asked them to repeat a series of(一连串)numbers. The findings: Students did better on both study activities and the attention test if they were in a classroom with a green view ,Sullivan said. The researchers suggest their findings can help planners and policymakers improve students' well-being and learning. For example planners can choose sites for new schools that already have trees and other vegetation, or they can plant many trees on the site;architects( 建筑师) can design classroom, dining room and hallway windows so they look onto green spaces. 8. What did the study find out about high school students? A. They like to have green plants in their classrooms. B. They will get better grades when studying in different classrooms. C. Changes in school design will influence their attitudes towards teachers. D. A green view through a classroom window can improve their performance. 9. What does the underlined word“ significant”in paragraph 2 mean? A. Traditional. B. Important. C. Necessary. D. Early. 10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. How the study was carried out. B. Why the study was different. C. The purpose of the study . D. The result of the study. 11. What do the researchers think of the study? A. It has drawn public attention to education. B. It can play a guiding role in school planning. C. It has encouraged students to get close to nature. D. It needs more support from high school teachers. D Scientists say they have developed a system that uses machine learning to predict when and where lightning will strike. Researchers report the system is able to predict lightning strikes up to 30 minutes before they happen within a 30-kilometer area. Lightning is a strong burst of electricity in the atmosphere. Since it carries an extremely powerful electrical charge, it can cause very deadly results. European researchers have estimated that between 6,000 and 24,000 people are killed by lightning worldwide each year. For this reason, climate scientists have long sought to develop methods to predict lightning. The system tested in the experiments uses a combination of data from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model that was trained to recognize weather conditions that were likely to cause lightning. The model was created with data collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data, related to four main surface conditions: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity (湿度) and wind speed, was placed into a unique machine learning algorithm (算法), which compared it to records of lightning strikes. Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens. The researchers test-ran the system several times. They found that the system made predictions that proved correct almost 80 percent of the time. “It can now be used anywhere,” the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology said in a statement. The researchers plan to keep developing the technology in partnership with a European effort that aims to create a lightning protection program. The effort is called the European Laser Lightning Rod project. Scientists working on the project are experimenting with a laser technology that could someday control lightning activity, transferring lightning charges from clouds to the ground. They hope that such technology can one day be used as protection against lightning strikes. Possible uses could be at stations, airports or places where large crowds gather. 12. Why was the system developed? A. To keep track of lightning deaths. B. To meet people’s curiosity about lightning. C. To protect people from lightning strikes. D. To take advantage of the energy of lightning. 13. What is special about the system? A. It collects data samples from around the world. B. It involves the use of a machine learning algorithm. C. It was test-run several times before being put into use. D. Its success owes greatly to a European effort. 14. What will the researchers do in the next stage? A. Prevent the formation of lightning. B. Get lightning striking under control. C. Inspire the study of a laser technology. D. Raise the accuracy of lightning prediction. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. A system of Controlling Lightning B. A Theory of Employing Lightning C. A Method of Forecasting Lightning D. A Model of Creating Lightning 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分;满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It is never too late to develop great study habits. However, starting making some changes is hard. A Model of Creating Lightning 【答案】12. C 13. B 14. B 15. (用it做形式宾语改写句子) ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Honestly speaking, I think it difficult to quit smoking. 【解析】 【详解】考查it作形式宾语。句意:老实说,我认为戒烟很难。原句是“主语+think+that宾语从句”,改写需用“主语+think+it+形容词+to do sth.”的结构,其中it作形式宾语,形容词用原句中的difficult,不定式to quit smoking作真正的宾语。故改写后的句子为:Honestly speaking, I think it difficult to quit smoking. 55. 昨天我的老师推荐我报名参加课外活动。(汉译英) _____________________________________________________________ 【答案】My teacher recommended me to sign up for after-school activities yesterday. 【解析】 【详解】句子陈述过去发生的事情,用一般过去时;主语“我的老师”表达为my teacher,“推荐某人做某事”可用recommend sb. to do sth.,recommend用过去式recommended,“报名参加”表达为sign up for,“课外活动”表达为after-school activities,时间状语是yesterday“昨天”。 第二节 应用文写作(满分20分) 56. 假定你是李华,你的英国笔友Sara来信说她和父母想来中国旅游,希望你能给她一些建议。请你给她回信,内容包括: 1. 写信目的; 2. 提出行程建议; 3. 表达祝福。 注意:1. 词数不少于100; 2. 可以适当增加细节,以使行文连贯。 ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear Sara, I am more than delighted to hear that you and your parents are planning to travel to China. Yours, Li Hua 【解析】 【导语】本篇书面表达属于应用文。考生的英国笔友Sara来信说她和父母想来中国旅游,希望你能给她一些建议。请考生给她回信。 【详解】1.词汇积累 快乐的:delighted→pleased 建议:suggestion→advice 展示:showcase→show 希望:hope→expect 2.句式拓展 同义句 原句:I am more than delighted to hear that you and your parents are planning to travel to China. 拓展句:Hearing that you and your parents are planning to travel to China, I am more than delighted. 【点睛】[高分句型1] For a comprehensive experience of China, I recommend you start from Beijing, the capital city.
