Bus driver kind, patient, responsible Boys 1, 2, 3 A large girl unfriendly, indifferent, arrogant, rude, prejudiced 03. Appreciation Appreciation Appreciate through lines. L21. Forrest begins to walk down the bus. L42. My legs are just fine and dandy. Let’s talk about our understanding of these lines. It means walking towards the back seats of the bus. There’s nothing wrong with his legs. Appreciation L53. Momma says stupid is as stupid does. L57. From that day on, we was always together. Forrest may be stupid in others’ eyes, but his mom thinks he is no different and tries her best to protect and encourage him. She tells him that only those who do stupid things are stupid and he is not. This line shows his mom’s love and wisdom, which inspires and encourages Forrest a lot. The grammatical mistakes reflect Forrest’s low IQ, which makes the character true and vivid. Appreciation L58. Jenny and me was like peas and carrot. “Peas and carrots” is an American idiom, which means keeping each other’s company very often as peas and carrots are two ingredients the western people always mix to decorate dishes when cooking, which people think can’t be separated. This phrase is used to indicate the friendship between Forrest and Jenny. What are your favorite lines from the script? Share your reasons. Appreciation A Sample Reason: When Jenny, as well as others, questions his stupidity, he always responds without hesitation, with the same answer. His IQ is lower than most people, so they perceive him to be stupid, but he never takes notice of this. And it does not affect his belief in himself. He lives in his own world, comfortable in his own reality, but at the same time he impresses those he meets in very surprising ways. I admire his determination and confidence. What are your favorite lines from other films? Explain why you like them. My favorite lines are from Gone With the Wind: “After all, tomorrow is another day!” I love this saying because it gives me courage and hope in times of difficulty and failure. By telling myself that tomorrow is another day and that everything will turn out just fine, I will cheer up and work hard to realize my goal. Appreciation A Sample 04. Project Project If we want to perform these classic lines vividly just like movie actors, we need to learn a super fun skill—dubbing. What is dubbing? Dubbing is the process of adding new dialogue or other sounds to the sound track of a film that has already been shot. Project What are the differences between voice-over and dubbing? Voice-over and dubbing are both techniques for interpreting a message to a new audience. However, while voice-over is narrative by nature and lacks the emotion and tonality of the original audio, dubbing is much more precise as it maintains the tonal, emotive, and technical richness of the original soundtrack. Project What requirements does dubbing a film scene need? Simulating the voice of the character in the video; Using the body language; Acting; Expressing the character’s emotions; ... Project Step1: Choose one film scene. A As a class, discuss some film scenes that you like. Use the ideas below to help you. Then in groups, choose a film scene you are going to dub. Are there enough characters in the scene in your group? Are the words clear to understand? Do the characters speak more or less the same amount? How long does the scene last? Project Are there enough characters in the scene for everyone in your group? It does not matter if there are more characters than group members: one person can play more than one character. Do the characters speak more or less the same amount? Try not to choose a scene where one person will have to do most of the speaking. Are the words clear to understand? Try not to choose a scene where characters are talking too quickly or using language that is too difficult. How long does the scene last? A scene that lasts two or three minutes is preferred. Project Step 2: As a group, practise dubbing the chosen film scene together. Tip — Voice acting Speak clearly and try to stay in time with the character speaking in the film. Use your body language to get into character and help the feelings come naturally. Even though only your voice will be heard, you need to act with your whole body. Project Step 3: As a group, present your dubbing to the rest of the class. You can present your dubbing in different ways: Record both your dubbing and the film scene, and present the video in class. Record your dubbing and present the audio in class. Perform your dubbing in class, without recording in advance. 05. Language points lead 1. I’m excited to learn about the coming English Dubbing Contest, and I’d like to share a suggestion about its form. I suggest allowing students to form small teams of 2-4 members instead of competing alone. My reasons are simple. First, teamwork can reduce stage fright and help students learn from each other. Second, group dubbing often sounds more natural and lively, which will make the contest more enjoyable for both the participants and the audience. In my opinion, a team-based contest would encourage more students to join and show their talents. Thank you for considering my idea. Good morning, everyone! ____________________________________________________________________ Thank you!
