When I arrived in Sofia, Bulgaria, as an exchange student, I thought I knew everything about making friends. I had studied English for eight years, and I could talk about almost anything. What I did not know was that my hands, my head and even my eyebrows could get me into trouble.
On my first morning at school, a girl named Elena asked me whether I wanted to join the school choir. I had no interest in singing at all, so I shook my head. To my surprise, Elena’s face lit up. “Wonderful! I’ll tell the teacher,” she said and hurried away. I stood there, completely confused.
At lunch, I asked my host brother why Elena had been so happy. He laughed. “Here in Bulgaria, shaking your head means ‘yes’,” he explained. “If you want to say ‘no’, you nod.” I could hardly believe it. All those years of English classes had taught me thousands of words, but nobody had ever told me that a simple movement of the head could mean the opposite of what I intended.
That evening I decided to watch before I judged. I noticed that my classmates stood much closer to each other than my friends at home did, that they kissed each other on the cheek when they met, and that they used their hands far more when they spoke. None of this was “wrong”; it was simply different.
By the end of the term, I had joined the choir, and I had learned something more valuable than any grammar rule. Words are important, but they are only half of the conversation. The other half is written on our faces and in the way we move. When we travel, we should not only learn a language; we should learn how to listen with our eyes.
14. What happened when the author shook his head that morning?
A. Elena was angry with him. B. Elena thought he agreed to join the choir.
C. Elena asked him to sing a song. D. Elena decided to leave Bulgaria.
15. What does the underlined word “lit up” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Turned red with anger. B. Became pale with fear.
C. Became bright with joy. D. Turned cold with doubt.
16. What is the best title for the text?
A. Listening with Your Eyes B. My First Day at a Bulgarian School
C. Why Bulgarian Students Love Singing D. How to Join a School Choir

Chimpanzees are disappearing from Africa’s forests, and scientists have been studying this problem for many years. At Gombe National Park in Tanzania, where researcher Jane Goodall began her famous work in the 1960s, the forest has become much smaller. There were about a million chimpanzees in the early 20th century, but today there may be only 170,000 to 300,000 left.
The reasons are clear. As local people need more land to grow food and sell wood for money, they have cut down many trees. Over the years, the forest has been broken into small pieces. With these pieces cut off from one another, chimpanzees can no longer move freely or meet other groups, which makes it harder for them to survive.
However, scientists have not given up hope. At Gombe, Goodall started a program that gives small loans to help villagers begin new businesses and teaches farmers how to grow crops without harmful chemicals. Using a simple phone app, villagers can now report illegal tree cutting by taking photos of fallen trees. What began in 12 villages has now spread to over a hundred villages in Tanzania.
These efforts are working. Today, Gombe’s chimpanzees are again connected to groups in nearby countries and are more likely to survive. “It’s not too late to save them,” says Goodall. “Every one of us can choose what kind of influence we make on this planet.”
17. What do we know about chimpanzee numbers?
A. They have dropped a lot over the years. B. They have stayed the same for decades.
C. They have risen slowly since the 1960s. D. They are no longer recorded by scientists.
18. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Why the forest has become smaller. B. How scientists help local people and wildlife.
C. When Goodall began her research at Gombe. D. What the phone app is used for.
19. What is Dr. Goodall’s attitude towards chimpanzee protection?
A. Doubtful. B. Hopeless. C. Positive. D. Unconcerned.
20. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Phone App That Saves the Forest B. A Warning from Africa’s Broken Forests
C. How to Protect Wild Animals D. Jane Goodall and Her Famous Work
