In Britain all children have to go to school between the ages of 5 and 16. In the US children must go to school from the age of 6 to the ages between 14 and 16, depending on the state they live in.
Subjects
In England and Wales the subjects taught in schools are laid down by the National Curriculum, which was introduced in 1988 and sets out in detail the subjects that children should study and the levels of achievement they should reach by the ages of 7,11,14, and 16, when they are tested. The National Curriculum does not apply to Scotland, where each school decides what subjects it will teach.
Examinations
At 16, students in England and Wales take GCSE examinations. These examinations are taken by students of all levels of ability in any of a range of subjects, and may involve a final examination, an assessment of work done during the two-year course, or both of these things. At 18 some students take A-level examinations, usually in no more than three subjects. It is necessary to have A levels in order to go to university.
In Scotland students take the SCE examinations. A year later, they can take examinations called Highers, after which they can either go straight to a university or spend a further year at school and take the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies. In Scotland the university system is different from that in England and Wales. Courses usually last four years rather than three, and students study a large number of subjects as part of their degree.
21. In which parts of the world are the subjects taught only decided by the nation?
A. England and Wales. B. England and Scotland.
C. US and Britain. D. Wales and Scotland.
22. Which of the following has nothing to do with students in Scotland?
A. GCSE. B. SCE.
C. Highers. D. The Certificate of Sixth Year Studies.
23. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. In the US, only local government can decide the subjects.
B. In Scotland, students can take either the SCE examinations or the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies.
C. In England and Wales, one cannot go to university without A levels.
D. As for a 16-year-old student in England and Wales, he has to take both GCSE examinations and a final examination.

It was a normal school day for senior Solymar Solis until an unexpected visitor arrived. Her dad, Sgt Carlos Solis Melendez, surprised her by coming home early from Kuwait and visiting her unannounced at Spring Valley High School in South Carolina.
After serving in Kuwait for nine months, Melendez returned home a week earlier than his daughter expected. He held balloons and flowers in a classroom as he sat at a student’s desk to blend in with the crowd. “It came across my mind like, ‘How is she going to react?’,” he recalled the heartwarming moment. “Is she going to be happy and run to me and hug me, or cry? That was all going on through my mind.”
As unsuspecting Solymar entered the classroom, she sat down and took out her books. But at the sight of her father, she was soon overcome with emotion, immediately bursting into tears and covering her mouth. She didn’t talk. She was just crying. She was overwhelmed with everything. She thought it was a dream.
Melendez was a single parent so while he was deployed(调度), he got his sister to live with his daughter. When he was coming back and talking to his sister, both of them came to the conclusion that they should do something special for his daughter. Melendez and his sister got in touch with the school, and they planned the whole being-in-the-classroom thing, and it turned out perfect.
The two are very much looking forward to some good daddy-daughter time now that he’s home. “It means everything,” Melendez said of being able to surprise his daughter this way. “After all the sacrifices she’s made, she deserves all the special arrangements and special occasions and celebrations. I’ll do anything for my daughter. I believe I’m doing good parenting.”
24. How did Solymar feel at first when entering the classroom?
A. She was eager to hug her father. B. She felt everything was as usual.
C. She got excited at seeing her father. D. She was surprised by what she saw.
25. What was Melendez’s attitude to the surprise?
A. Satisfied. B. Astonished. C. Touched. D. Upset.
26. Why did Melendez plan the surprise for Solymar?
A. To get involved in her school life. B. To show his concern for her in a special way.
C. To build a strong emotional bond with her. D. To make up for what she lost in her growth.
27. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. An unexpected visitor B. Girl expecting the return of her dad
C. Girl surprised at school by her dad’s return D. Father and daughter’s long-time separation
B 25. A 26. D 27. C

根据第四段中“Melendez and his sister got in touch with the school, and they planned the whole being-in-the-classroom thing, and it turned out perfect.(Melendez和他的妹妹联系了学校,他们计划了整个在教室里的事情,结果非常完美。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“The two are very much looking forward to some good daddy-daughter time now that he’s home. “It means everything,” Melendez said of being able to surprise his daughter this way. “After all the sacrifices she’s made, she deserves all the special arrangements and special occasions and celebrations. I’ll do anything for my daughter. I believe I’m doing good parenting.”(现在他已回家,父女俩都十分期待共度美好的亲子时光。Melendez谈到能以这种方式给女儿一个惊喜时说:“这意义非凡。”“她做出了那么多牺牲,她值得拥有所有特别的安排、特别的时刻和庆祝活动。为了女儿,我愿意做任何事。我觉得自己做得不错,是个好家长。”)”可知,Melendez为Solymar策划这个惊喜是为了弥补她在成长中失去的东西。故选D。
27. 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“It was a normal school day for senior Solymar Solis until an unexpected visitor arrived. According to research, the average person has 3 to 5 very close friends, 10 to 15 people in their circle, and 100 to 150 acquaintances(认识的人) in their social network. Naturally, these numbers can vary widely based on your personality, career, location, and social skills.
It’s a common misunderstanding that you need to have tons of friends to be happy. Studies have revealed that it isn’t the number of friends, but the quality of friends, that leads to true happiness. Close friends are far more likely to bring real social satisfaction than a bunch of casual connections.
This even holds true in the celebrity(名人) world, where one would imagine that famous people have loads of friends… Nope! Oprah Winfrey openly shares that she has only 3 close friends. Instagram star and singer Selena Gomez says the same; she only has 3 good friends she feels she can tell everything to. Actor Matthew McConaughey says, “I’ve got only a few really close friends in the 28 years of acting that I keep up with all the time.”
Nearly half of the American population reports an average of 3 close friends. About a third of people report having 4 to 9 close friends. The other proportions include people with 10 or more close friends (about 13%) and those who report no close friends at all (12%). Oxford anthropologist Robin Dunbar calculated that you could only maintain a social network of 150 to 200 people, most of whom are casual acquaintances. Most people have a smaller group of about 15 friends that they can open up to. And Dunbar estimates that we only realistically keep an inner core circle of 5 or fewer friends.
Compared with 1990, Americans are becoming more socially isolated over time. The number of close friendships Americans have is dropping. And a bunch of surface-level acquaintances just don’t cut it for satisfying our social bonding needs. Even if you know many people, maintaining a handful of close quality friendships could be the key to true social connectedness.
28. What mistaken belief do many people hold commonly?
A. People with better social skills own more friends.
B. A perfect social circle contains 100 to 150 contacts.
C. Owning lots of friends makes people happy.
D. Common acquaintances cannot bring real joy.
29. How does the author stress close friends’ importance to true happiness?
A. By listing famous people’s cases.
B. By referring to social media videos.
C. By reviewing classical movies.
D. By providing scientific reports.
30. What is the realistic size for a person’s circle of close friends in Dunbar’s opinion?
A. About 200 people. B. More than 150 people.
C. About 15 people. D. No more than 5 people.
31. What results in Americans’ increasing social loneliness after 1990?
A. Lack of enough ordinary acquaintances.
B. Misunderstanding the secret of real happiness.
C. The falling number of close friends.
D. Making friends only through social platforms.
C 29. A 30. D 31. C
根据第二段“It’s a common misunderstanding that you need to have tons of friends to be happy.(人们普遍存在一个误解,认为需要拥有大量的朋友才能获得快乐)”可知,许多人错误地认为朋友越多越幸福。
根据第三段“This even holds true in the celebrity (名人) world, where one would imagine that famous people have loads of friends… Nope! Oprah Winfrey openly shares that she has only 3 close friends. Instagram star and singer Selena Gomez says the same; she only has 3 good friends she feels she can tell everything to. Actor Matthew McConaughey says, “I’ve got only a few really close friends in the 28 years of acting that I keep up with all the time.”(这一点甚至在名人界也成立,人们会想象名人有很多朋友……不!奥普拉·温弗瑞公开表示,她只有三个亲密的朋友。Instagram明星兼歌手赛琳娜·戈麦斯也这么说;她只有三个可以倾诉一切的好朋友。演员马修·麦康纳说:“在我28年的演艺生涯中,我只有几个真正亲密的朋友,我一直在和他们保持联系。”)”可知,作者通过列举多位名人的案例来强调密友对真正幸福感的重要性。
30. 细节理解题。根据第四段“Oxford anthropologist Robin Dunbar calculated that you could only maintain a social network of 150 to 200 people, most of whom are casual acquaintances. Most people have a smaller group of about 15 friends that they can open up to. And Dunbar estimates that we only realistically keep an inner core circle of 5 or fewer friends.(牛津大学人类学家罗宾·邓巴计算出,你只能维持一个150到200人的社交网络,其中大多数是泛泛之交。大多数人有一个更小的群体,大约15个可以敞开心扉的朋友。而邓巴估计,我们实际上只能维持一个由5个或更少朋友组成的内核圈子)”可知,在邓巴看来,一个人亲密朋友圈的现实规模是不超过5人。
31. 细节理解题。根据第五段“Compared with 1990, Americans are becoming more socially isolated over time. The number of close friendships Americans have is dropping. And a bunch of surface-level acquaintances just don’t cut it for satisfying our social bonding needs.(与1990年相比,随着时间的推移,美国人正变得越来越与社会隔绝。美国人拥有的亲密友谊数量正在下降。一堆表面层次的熟人根本无法满足我们的社交联结需求)”可知,导致美国人日益孤独的原因是亲密朋友数量的减少。

Do you want a better memory(记忆力)? If there were an app on your phone that could improve your memory, would you try it? After all, our memory can be easily damaged by diseases, injuries, bad mental health conditions and, most particularly for all of us, aging.
Nowadays, there are a large number of apps that provide memory training. Can they help you remember to take medicine, do better on a school exam, remember the name of the person whom you met yesterday? Some scientists question whether this is possible. Undoubtedly, many of the brain training companies today boast the benefits of using their apps.
Scientists have provided proof that brain training does not benefit everyone in the same way. It is suggested that little consideration has been given to who would benefit most from those brain training apps. Will they only be those who have some forms of memory impairment(缺陷), or those eager for self-improvement even though they are already functioning very well?
To overcome these limitations, our team has started a new study aiming to find 30,000 volunteers to help us decide which form of training may be the best for individuals. Our goal is to avoid a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead of focusing on the simple question of whether brain training works, we are considering covering the whole population in a new challenge to test for whom brain training works, and under which conditions.
32. What damages our memory the most according to paragraph 1?
A. Growing old. B. Being sick.
C. Getting injured. D. Suffering from mental problems.
33. What does the underlined word “boast” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Describe. B. Show. C. Self-praise. D. Recommend.
34. What’s the scientists’ attitude toward the memory training apps?
A. Uncaring. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Supportive.
35. Why does the author’s team do the study?
A. To see if brain training works.
B. To prove one-size-fits-all is best.
C. To explain why apps fail for some people.
D. To find the best training for different people.
A 33. C 34. B 35. D
根据第一段“After all, our memory can be easily damaged by diseases, injuries, bad mental health conditions and, most particularly for all of us, aging. (毕竟,我们的记忆力很容易被疾病、伤害、不良心理健康状况所损害,而对我们所有人来说,最特别的是衰老)”可知,衰老对记忆力的损害最为显著。
33. 词句猜测题。根据第二段“Undoubtedly, many of the brain training companies today boast the benefits of using their apps. (毫无疑问,如今许多大脑训练公司都boast使用其应用程序的好处)”可知,公司对自家产品的好处进行宣传、吹嘘,boast在此处意为“自夸、吹嘘”,与Self-praise意思相近。
34. 推理判断题。根据第三段“Scientists have provided proof that brain training does not benefit everyone in the same way. It is suggested that little consideration has been given to who would benefit most from those brain training apps. (科学家已经提供了证据,证明大脑训练并非对每个人都有同样的益处。有人认为,很少有人考虑过谁最能从这些大脑训练应用程序中获益)”可知,科学家认为大脑训练应用并非对所有人都有效,态度是消极的、否定的。
35. 细节理解题。根据第四段“To overcome these limitations, our team has started a new study aiming to find 30,000 volunteers to help us decide which form of training may be the best for individuals. Our goal is to avoid a one-size-fits-all approach. (为了克服这些局限性,我们的团队已经开始了一项新研究,旨在找到30000名志愿者,帮助我们确定哪种训练形式可能最适合个人。我们的目标是避免一刀切的方法)”可知,作者团队做这项研究是为了找到适合不同人的最佳训练方式。

How to Balance Study and After-school Activities
After-school club activities equip teenagers with precious social experience. Nevertheless, numerous high-school students struggle to strike a proper balance between academic duties and extra-curricular commitments. The following advice may shed light on this common dilemma(困境).
36 Prior to signing up for any club programme, objectively assess your current academic burden. Refrain from committing yourself to too many activities which eat up the bulk of your study and recovery time.
Make a realistic weekly schedule. Record both homework assignments and club activity time clearly. 37 Place urgent academic tasks at the top of your agenda so you will not fall behind your classmates.
Learn to turn down invitations properly. You may feel drawn toward multiple clubs simultaneously. 38 Over-participation will result in exhaustion and weakened academic performance.
Make full use of fragmented spare time. Short intervals such as class breaks can be applied to rapid review of class notes. 39 Complex, demanding assignments are not suitable for these limited time slots.
40 If you are buried under unbearable stress, scale back some activities temporarily. Academic progress and physical well-being deserve the highest priority.
A. Evaluate your academic load before joining clubs.
B. Yet it is unrealistic to get involved in every appealing activity.
C. It is acceptable to stay up late to finish delayed school assignments.
D. Keep study and activity arrangements visible on your schedule.
E. Short time blocks are intended for light, quick revision work.
F. Once you join one club, you must stick to it no matter what happens.
G. Cut down activities temporarily when suffering from heavy pressure.

39. 上文“Short intervals such as class breaks can be applied to rapid review of class notes.(像课间这样的短间歇可以被用于快速复习课堂笔记)”说明零碎时间可用于快速复习,下文“Complex, demanding assignments are not suitable for these limited time slots.(复杂的、要求高的作业不适合这些有限的时间段)”指出复杂作业不适合这类有限的时间段。E选项“Short time blocks are intended for light, quick revision work.(短时间段是用于轻松的、快速的复习工作的)”与上文的Short intervals以及rapid review构成同义复现,并与下文形成对照。
下文“If you are buried under unbearable stress, scale back some activities temporarily. Academic progress and physical well-being deserve the highest priority.(如果你被难以承受的压力所淹没,暂时缩减一些活动。学业进步和身体健康值得拥有最高的优先权)”说明压力过大时应暂时减少活动。G选项“Cut down activities temporarily when suffering from heavy pressure.(在承受沉重压力时暂时减少活动)”准确概括本段主旨。

The Silent Strength
It was the school’s handcraft show week. Our art teacher assigned a special task: each student should carve a wooden puppet for the coming exhibition, where we would put on short puppet performances on the stage. Most classmates finished their puppets quickly. They polished and painted neat facial features and bright smiles in a short time, and all the fancy, eye-catching works won plenty of warm admiration from the whole class.
I also devoted all my spare time to carving my puppet. I measured and cut the wood again and again, spending far more time than any other student. However, my work turned out strangely. Its mouth twisted to one side and its eyes were uneven It looked awkward and ugly at first sight. My desk mate glanced at it and shook his head. “No one will like this funny-looking puppet. Why not give it up and make a new one?” he suggested. Even the teacher told me that because of its strange look, my puppet would not be included in the stage show. It could only sit quietly on the display shelf for visitors to view.
Still, I couldn’t bear to throw it away. Every cut on the wood carried my time and patient effort. I chose thick, solid wood and fitted each joint carefully so that it could move freely. I kept smoothing its rough surface quietly in my free moments. No matter what others thought of its appearance, I decided to take this imperfect puppet to the exhibition anyway. Deep inside, I believed its strong structure might surprise everyone someday.

As our puppet show got underway, trouble began to appear. Many beautifully-made puppets developed loose joints during the performance. Their thin, delicate parts could hardly stand steady on the stage and some even fell over. Panic spread backstage. Glancing at my sturdy puppet, the teacher turned to me, asking whether I could be the last-minute replacement. Before I could fully digest the surprise, I nodded, ready to bring my puppet onto the stage.
Standing under the spotlight, my hands trembled slightly. I took a deep breath and guided my puppet to move gently. Though its twisted face looked unusual, it held every pose steadily. I focused on the slow, smooth movements, forgetting the audience’s stares. When the performance ended, warm applause burst out. In that moment, I sensed the silent strength hidden not in polished paint, but in the solid foundation built with patience and care.

Their fragile joints slipped apart one after another, falling onto the stage floor. Chaos swept through backstage whispers. Casting a quick glance at my athletic puppet resting on the shelf, the teacher rushed over, begging me to fill in as an emergency substitute. A surge of astonishment washed over me, yet I gave a firm nod.
Standing under the spotlight, my hands trembled slightly. My heart thumped wildly in my chest as I controlled the puppet’s limbs. Despite its uneven features drawing curious glances, it moved without the slightest shake. Gradually, my anxiety melted away. I immersed myself in the performance, breathing in rhythm with every gesture. As the show concluded, waves of applause rolled across the hall. It dawned on me that silent strength never lies in gleaming surfaces, but in solid, painstaking craftsmanship beneath.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
