“Keep your words soft and gentle,” goes an old saying, “because tomorrow you may have to eat them.” I learned exactly what this meant in high school — the hard way.
One afternoon, my friend Megan and I were making preparations for our school musical. Out of nowhere, she asked about my date with Mike, a quiet boy from our grade. Without thinking, I said, “I only went because I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. I’m not really interested in going out with him again.”
The moment the words left my mouth, I felt an ache in my hand — as if I’d hit something hard. I looked up and there stood Mike in the doorway, his face pale, eyes wide with shock. He turned and ran. I wanted to run after him, but my feet felt like lead.
All week I avoided Mike in our shared classes. I kept asking myself: Am I embarrassed(尴尬的) because I look bad, or because I hurt him? Until I could answer that honestly, I couldn’t apologize(道歉).
Then came speech class. Mr. Kincaid handed out topics for speeches. My paper read: “Tell about your most embarrassing moment.” My heart dropped, but I knew what I had to say. Standing before thirty classmates who thought I was “Miss Perfect”, I confessed(坦白) my careless words and wished I had never said those words — without naming Mike or adding more information that might embarrass him further.
When I finished, the silence was heavy. Then someone clapped. Then another. Soon the whole class were clapping their hands. I didn’t feel proud — I felt thankful.
Mike moved away that summer. We never spoke about it directly, but years later, through the Internet, we reconnected. He’d seen my apology for what it was: honest and sincere.
Mr. Kincaid gave me an A, but the real lesson cost more. Before speaking about anyone, I now run my words through four filters(过滤): Is it true? Helpful? Kind? Necessary? If it doesn’t pass all four, I keep it to myself.
Forty years later, I’m still glad we’re friends. And I’ve never forgotten: words can wound deeply — but they can also repair broken hearts.
24. Why did the author go out on a date with Mike?
A. She liked him a lot.
B. She was his only friend.
C. She didn’t want to hurt him.
D. She needed him for the musical.
25. Why did the author avoid Mike in shared classes?
A. She didn’t truly care about Mike’s feelings.
B. She was waiting for Mike to apologize first.
C. She wanted to apologize but didn’t know how.
D. She needed to understand her own feelings first.
26. What can be inferred about the author’s speech in the class?
A. It was made to protect her “Miss Perfect” name.
B. It was an easy and direct way to apologize to Mike.
C. It was meant to win a high grade from Mr. Kincaid.
D. It was designed to apologize without hurting Mike more.
27. What lesson did she learn from this experience?
A. Friendships don’t last. B. Public speaking is hard.
C. Think twice before speaking. D. True apologies need time.
C
Two friends are seated in a busy restaurant. They acknowledge it has been “too long” since they last caught up. Then a tense silence follows. One friend asks, “So, how are you?” Such a simple question weighs heavily on the other. She forces a smile and replies, “I’m fine. How are you?”
The strange part is that she doesn’t say it intentionally. “Fine” seems to arrive on its own before she even questions if it’s true. For many of us, being “fine” is a reflex, like pulling our hands back from something hot before we feel the pain. This behavioral pattern sticks because it works, at least on a surface level. It keeps the childhood dinner table calm, or a boss from further asking personal questions. “Fine” creates a boundary without us having to voice the need for space.
There is a trade-off, of course. “I’m fine” isn’t so much a lie. Rather, it’s a stand-in for something more authentic(真实的) and complicated. Often we lack the time, safety or language to name what is under “fine”. The reflex to be “fine” becomes so automatic that rarely does anyone get a real answer, including ourselves.
This “I’m fine” reflex is seldom built in a single event. Instead it’s incubated in moments when “fine” keeps things working: with easily stressed parents, or in a household where no one truly cares to listen when asking “how are you”. None of the exchanges has to be dramatic to leave a mark; enough repetition tells the nervous system that honesty here is unsafe or unwanted.
Fortunately, once identified, the reflex can be changed — just a brief pause(暂停) before saying “fine”. In that pause, you don’t even have to voice the truth to break the habit; start simply by noticing the gap between the automatic answer and the real one. Then start with one low-pressure person, like a friend, to practise honest replies before opening up to others.
28. Why does the author mention the two friends in paragraph 1?
A. To share communication skills. B. To give a reason for small talk.
C. To introduce a response pattern. D. To illustrate the safe social distance.
29. What can we infer about the “I’m fine” reflex?
A. It allows people some personal space. B. It is a white lie meant to hide bad moods.
C. It does more harm than good in daily life. D. It efficiently expresses complicated emotions.
30. What does the underlined word “incubated” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Hidden. B. Replaced. C. Developed. D. Discovered.
31. What is suggested in the last paragraph?
A. Questioning the honesty of others. B. Sharing pressure with trusted friends.
C. Avoiding simple answers in conversations. D. Examining automatic replies before speaking.
D
Like many people, I’m always trying to balance tough work deadlines, cleaning the house, and the endless messages on my phone. Last month, I felt really tired all the time. When I went for a regular(常规的) health check, I found out my blood pressure was getting too high. The doctor suggested that I take a few days off to go on a vacation.
Modern life is often busy, which makes many people feel stressed(有压力的). Studies show that stress is a common problem around the world. The World Health Organization says it affects millions of people everywhere.
Planning a trip can be a good way to relax and feel better. Dr. Jane Smith, a psychologist from Cornell University, says, “You don’t need to travel far or stay away for long. What’s important is to step away from your routine(日常事务) and take a break. Visiting new places and trying new things can make you happy and excited.”
Dr. Smith and her team carried out a study involving over 400 participants(参与者) who took short vacations. They assessed the participants’ energy levels both before and after their trips through detailed questionnaires(调查表). The results showed that 94% of the participants reported feeling more energetic after their vacations. This suggests that taking time off, even for short periods, can greatly improve one’s focus and creativity upon returning to work.
“Taking a trip is important, no matter how busy life gets. It’s good for your mind and body,” Dr. Smith says.
32. What does the author want to show by telling his story?
A. People seldom see a doctor.
B. People get tired after a trip.
C. People hardly go on a vacation.
D. People suffer stress from their busy life.
33. What is important for a trip according to Dr. Smith?
A. Finding a quiet city.
B. Choosing a faraway place.
C. Staying away for a long time.
D. Stopping regular activities for a while.
34. What were participants asked to do during the study?
A. Answer questions.
B. Record their daily life.
C. Pick their travelling places.
D. Visit the hospital for checks regularly.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Modern Life Is Stressful
B. What You Should Do During a Trip
C. Mind and Body Can Be Freed by a Trip
D. How People Balance Life and Work

How to Become Confident
For most of us, self-confidence isn’t just something that falls out of the sky. 36 Fortunately, by following specific habits and practicing certain beliefs, you can improve your self-esteem and go through life with higher self-confidence.
● 37
Truly confident people never pretend to be the wisest person around them. Instead of showing off their knowledge to impress others, they keep curious, ask questions actively and keep learning all the time. This humble attitude makes them more popular and helps them become wiser in the process of communication and study.
●Make more eye contact
A scientific study has proved the close link between self-confidence and eye contact. People with low self-esteem often avoid continuous eye contact during communication. 38 Proper eye contact shows one’s sincerity and concentration, creates effective emotional communication, and greatly strengthens interpersonal trust between people.
●Practice open body language
Body language is a direct and obvious reflection of one’s inner confidence. Confident people always keep open and relaxed body gestures, while insecure people tend to make themselves look small and reserved. Body language and confidence influence each other mutually. Simple practice of open gestures can greatly help people rebuild inner confidence gradually. 39
●Don’t care much about other people’s opinions
40 It is from being afraid of others’ thought. We care too much about other people’s opinions. Highly confident people, on the other hand, don’t care much about the opinions of others. They aren’t bothered with trying to impress others. They don’t care much if someone thinks what they wear, say, or do is stupid.
A. Try to bravely bring out the best in you.
B. Stop forcing yourself to be perfectly right.
C. Lack of confidence influences many aspects of our daily life.
D. But improper behaviors will slowly damage your confidence.
E. Instead, confident people usually keep looking at you while talking.
F. Low confidence is not mainly because we think poorly of ourselves.
G. However, active communication is the key to building personal confidence.

Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had a dislike to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things related to math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.
Mr. A always greeted us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed, although I still hated the subject itself. From then on, I had spent countless hours studying, but with so many difficulties to cover, I was overwhelmed. The pressure of the subject was weighing heavily on my shoulders. I had always been a hardworking and dedicated student, but the stress seemed unbearable. No matter how much effort I put into math, I couldn’t seem to keep up. As the mid-term exams approached, I felt a sense of dread. The fear of failure consumed me, and I began to doubt myself again.
One day after school, I found myself walking alongside Mr. A on the empty playground. He could tell that something was bothering me, and he asked if everything was alright. I hesitated for a moment, unsure of whether to share my struggles.

C 25. D 26. D 27. C
根据第二段“I only went because I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. I’m not really interested in going out with him again.(我去约会只是因为不想伤害他的感情,我其实并不想再和他约会了。)”
根据第四段“All week I avoided Mike in our shared classes. I kept asking myself: Am I embarrassed (尴尬的) because I look bad, or because I hurt him? Until I could answer that honestly, I couldn’t apologize (道歉).(整整一周我在共同课堂上避开迈克。我不断自问:我尴尬是因为自己难堪,还是因为伤害了他?在诚实想明白前,我无法道歉。)”可知,作者需要先理清自己的内心感受。
26. 推理判断题。根据第五段“I confessed (坦白) my careless words and wished I had never said those words — without naming Mike or adding more information that might embarrass him further.(我坦白了自己轻率的话语,懊悔说出那些话,全程没有提及迈克姓名,也没有补充更多会让他更加难堪的信息。)”
根据第八段“Before speaking about anyone, I now run my words through four filters(过滤): Is it true? Helpful? Kind? Necessary? If it doesn’t pass all four, I keep it to myself.(如今在评价他人前,我会用四个标准过滤话语:是否真实、有益、善意、必要?不符合就闭口不谈。)”可知,作者学会了说话前三思而后行。
C 29. A 30. C 31. D
根据第一段“One friend asks, “So, how are you?” Such a simple question weighs heavily on the other. She forces a smile and replies, “I’m fine. How are you?”(其中一位朋友问道:“那你怎么样?”这个简单问题让对方感到沉重。她强挤出一丝微笑,回答道:“我挺好的,你呢?”)”可知,作者在第一段中提到两位朋友的原因是为了介绍一种回应模式。
29. 推理判断题。根据第二段“It keeps the childhood dinner table calm, or a boss from further asking personal questions. “Fine” creates a boundary without us having to voice the need for space.(它能让童年时的餐桌保持平静,也能让上司不再追问私密问题。“挺好的”创造了一种界限,而我们无需明确表达自己需要空间。)”可知,“我很好”这一句回答为人们提供了一些个人空间。
30. 词句猜测题。根据第四段“This “I’m fine” reflex is seldom built in a single event.(这种“我挺好的”的反应,通常并非源于单一事件。)”和“moments when “fine” keeps things working: with easily stressed parents, or in a household where no one truly cares to listen when asking “how are you”(那些说“很好”就能让事情维持运转的时刻:面对容易焦虑的父母,或是在一个问“你怎么样”却没人真正愿意倾听的家庭里)”可知,“I’m fine”这句话不是在单一事件中养成的,而是在“说‘很好’就能让事情维持运转”的时刻养成,incubated的意思是“养成”,和developed意思相近。
根据最后一段“In that pause, you don’t even have to voice the truth to break the habit; start simply by noticing the gap between the automatic answer and the real one. Then start with one low-pressure person, like a friend, to practise honest replies before opening up to others.(在那个停顿里,你甚至不必说出真相就能打破这个习惯;先从留意自动化回答和真实回答之间的差距开始。然后从一个让你感到压力小的人(比如朋友)开始,练习诚实的回答,之后再向其他人敞开心扉。)”可知,最后一段建议在说话前检查自动化回答。
D. How People Balance Life and Work
D 33. D 34. A 35. C
根据第一段中“Like many people, I’m always trying to balance tough work deadlines, cleaning the house, and the endless messages on my phone. Last month, I felt really tired all the time.(像许多人一样,我总是在努力平衡紧张的工作期限、打扫房子和手机上无休止的信息。上个月,我一直觉得很累)”以及第二段中“Modern life is often busy, which makes many people feel stressed (有压力的). (现代生活往往很忙碌,这让很多人感到压力)”可知,作者通过讲述自己的故事想要说明人们因忙碌的生活而遭受压力。故选D。
33. 细节理解题。根据第三段中Jane Smith博士说的话“You don’t need to travel far or stay away for long. What’s important is to step away from your routine (日常事务) and take a break.(你不需要走很远或离开很长时间。重要的是远离日常事务,休息一下)”可知,Smith博士认为,旅行重要的是暂时停止常规活动。故选D。
34. 细节理解题。根据第四段中“Dr. Smith and her team carried out a study involving over 400 participants (参与者) who took short vacations. They assessed the participants’ energy levels both before and after their trips through detailed questionnaires (调查表).(Smith博士和她的团队对400多名参加短途旅行的参与者进行了研究。他们通过详细的调查表评估了参与者旅行前后的精力水平)”可知,在研究过程中,参与者被要求回答调查表上的问题。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段中““Taking a trip is important, no matter how busy life gets. It’s good for your mind and body,” Dr. Smith says.(Smith博士说:“无论生活有多忙,旅行都很重要。它对你的身心都有好处。”。)”可知,文章主要讲当今人们面临诸多生活压力,建议通过旅行来放松其身心。C选项“Mind and Body Can Be Freed by a Trip(旅行可以解放身心)”最符合文章主旨,可以作为最佳标题。
36. 由上文“For most of us, self-confidence isn’t just something that falls out of the sky.(对我们大多数人来说,自信不会凭空而来)”以及下文“Fortunately, by following specific habits and practicing certain beliefs, you can improve your self-esteem and go through life with higher self-confidence.(幸运的是,通过养成特定习惯、践行特定信念,你就能提升自尊,以更强的自信度过人生)”可知,空格承接上文自信难以凭空获得,引出后文提高自信的办法。C选项“Lack of confidence influences many aspects of our daily life.(缺乏自信会影响我们日常生活的方方面面)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中“Lack of confidence”与上文“self-confidence”、与下文“higher self-confidence”相呼应,“many aspects of our daily life”与下文“go through life”相呼应,逻辑通顺。
37. 由下文“Truly confident people never pretend to be the wisest person around them. Instead of showing off their knowledge to impress others, they keep curious, ask questions actively and keep learning all the time.(真正自信的人从不会装作身边最博学的人。他们不会卖弄学识来博取他人好感,而是始终保有好奇心、主动发问,坚持不断学习)”可知,本段讲述的是真正自信的人从不炫耀,始终保持谦逊、求知、持续学习。B选项“Stop forcing yourself to be perfectly right.(不要强求自己事事完美正确)”能概括本段谦逊不自满的主旨,作为本段小标题贴合段落内容;该选项中“Stop forcing yourself to be perfectly right”与下文“never pretend to be the wisest person”、“keep curious”、“ask questions”、“keep learning”形成呼应。
38. 由上文“People with low self-esteem often avoid continuous eye contact during communication.(自卑的人交流时常回避持续的眼神接触)”以及下文“Proper eye contact shows one’s sincerity and concentration, creates effective emotional communication, and greatly strengthens interpersonal trust between people.(恰当的眼神交流能够展现一个人的真诚与专注,促成高效的情感沟通,还能极大增进人与人之间的信任)”可知,空格对比自卑人群,讲述自信者的眼神习惯。E选项“Instead, confident people usually keep looking at you while talking.(相反,自信的人交谈时通常会直视对方。)”
39. 由上文“Simple practice of open gestures can greatly help people rebuild inner confidence gradually.(练习舒展的肢体动作能逐步重塑内心自信)”可知,前文讲舒展肢体语言的好处。D选项“But improper behaviors will slowly damage your confidence.(但不当行为会慢慢损害你的自信)”转折说明不当肢体动作的负面影响,能承接上文,符合题意,该选项中“improper behaviors”与上文“open gestures”形成正反对照。
40. 由下文“It is from being afraid of others’ thought. We care too much about other people’s opinions.(根源是害怕他人的看法,我们过度在意别人评价)”可知,后文解释不自信的真正成因,空格提出观点:自卑的主要原因并非自我否定。F选项“Low confidence is not mainly because we think poorly of ourselves.(缺乏自信,主要并非因为自我否定)”能引出下文解释原因的内容,符合题意,该选项中“Low confidence”与下文“care too much about other people’s opinions”构成逻辑呼应。

But there was something in his kind eyes that made me open up. I poured out my frustrations, explaining how hard I had been working and how little progress I was making. Tears welled up in my eyes as I admitted that I was afraid of failing the exams. To my surprise, Mr. A didn’t offer words of sympathy or pity. Instead, he shared his own experiences as a high school student and the challenges he faced during his final year. He told me about the countless nights he spent studying, the moments of self-doubt, and the overwhelming pressure.
Something different seemed to have shifted in my study and life. Instead of letting the stress consume me, I started looking for ways to manage the study pressure more effectively. The day of the exam came. I answered the questions as best as I could. Finally, the exam ended, and I walked out of the classroom, with a sense of relief. Next week, I anxiously scanned the paper for my score. My eyes widened in disbelief, I had received an A! I could hardly contain my excitement so I happily ran to Mr. A’s office to tell him the good news. I saw Mr. A wearing a smile with thumbs up. The golden sunlight poured into the office, like Mr. A lighting up my life as well as the path to pursue my dream.
