Have you ever received letters from your parents? I believe 1 makes a family letter special is that it is full of love from our parents and serves as a bridge of communication between us and them.
Fu Lei’s Family Letters is a book of letters written by Chinese translator and writer Fu Lei to 2 elder son, Fu Cong, who is a famous pianist. Between 1954 and 1966, Fu Cong spent a lot of time away from home 3 as a piano player. As a result, writing letters became Fu Lei’s common way of communicating with his elder son. Fu Min, Fu Lei’s younger son, edited the letters and the book 4 in 1981.
The book displays Fu Lei’s family tradition and values. To Fu Lei, the purpose of education of a person, as shown in Fu Lei’s Family Letters, is to make that person useful to society. Fu Lei praised his son Fu Cong 5 winning a piano competition. Fu Lei wrote, “We are happy that you’ve made our country proud. I am so 6 when I think about your future. You will improve a lot and serve more people, encourage them and heal them.”
In the family letters, Fu Lei advised Fu Cong to make 7 his habit to read famous Chinese texts. When reading these books, Fu Cong was told to link ideas and feelings together, for that would help him become a better person. To Fu Lei, learning to be a good person comes 8 any academic (学业的) training. In 1954, Fu Lei wrote, “Otherwise, 9 he or she is very knowledgeable, the person will not achieve much.”
Fu Lei’s Family Letters has great influence on people in China. The book helps many young students understand 10 they should live their lives.

Everybody knows that Edison is a famous scientist who invented the electric light bulb. But maybe fewer people have 11 his being kind and forgiving towards others. The following is a true story about him.
At one point in his experiments, Edison had at last 12 a working bulb—the final result of hundreds of trials. It was the 13 electric light bulb that had ever been made, and Edison was full of pride and delight. He had dreamed of this moment for years. “Take it upstairs, Jimmy,” he said, handing it to his assistant, Jimmy Price. 14 there was a crash, and Edison turned around to see that his precious bulb had fallen to the ground and broken into pieces on the floor. Jimmy had let the bulb slip (滑落) through his fingers 15 .
Edison said nothing, but everyone can imagine what his thoughts were. He went back to his work table and set to work once more to make another 16 .
A few days later, a new bulb was finally ready. There it 17 on the table in front of its maker, fully completed. Then Edison did a very big thing. With a smile, he handed the new bulb to Jimmy. “Be careful this time,” he said. He was giving the young man another 18 . Jimmy did not break it, so we have millions of bulbs in the world today.
As a proverb says, “Not the power to 19 , but its very opposite, the power to forget, is a necessary condition for our existence.” Life is too short and no one is 20 . If we can forgive those who have hurt us, we will have a better life.

Under her favourite tree in her family backyard, Jamilla picked up a stick and scratched the ground. She was surprised because her scratching uncovered a small blue piece of clay.
Jamilla’s curiosity made her continue digging. Soon, she found five more pieces of clay. Carved into four of the six pieces was a pattern of lines with letters next to each line and the four pieces seemed to fit together but they didn’t spell anything.
“That’s quite a special treasure you found,” her grandfather passing by said. “Let me show you something special.” He brought Jamilla into the living room where he took out his family tree book.
“I had had this book before your mother was born! I have been tracing our family history in the front pages,” her grandfather explained turning the pages where the names of their family members were written.
“There is me!” Jamilla pointed to her name at the bottom when her grandfather reached the last page.
“Yes!” said her grandfather. “Now draw a line from the person at the top to you.”
Jamilla traced an invisible line in the book. Suddenly she thought of how the letters on the clay went in order: A, R, L, J. They were in the same order as the letters in the book!
“I made a pot on the day you were born,” her grandfather said, “and then I carved the initials (首字母) of our family members into it. Later, I planted seeds in that pot. The seeds grew into a tree—”
“Our weeping willow!” Jamilla exclaimed.
“Yes. But as the tree grew, that pot broke and you just found some of the pieces. You found the roots of your family at the roots of the willow tree.”

A little boy worked hard all day for his poor farming family. He did housework, fed animals, and helped his father in the field. He was often tired, but he never complained (抱怨) and kept working quietly.
Every evening, his father gave him an hour to relax. The boy would climb a nearby hill and look at a house far away. Its windows shone like gold and diamonds in the sun. He admired it deeply and thought it was the most wonderful place in the world. He often dreamed of leaving his simple home to live there.
One day, his father said, “You have worked so hard. You can take a day off today. Enjoy it, but remember to learn the true meaning of happiness.”
The boy set out excitedly to find the golden windows. He walked across fields, through small woods and over a river. He shared his bread with the birds and kept moving.
When he finally got to the far hill, he stood still. His smile flew away like a bird. The house only had glass windows—nothing shining at all.
A kind woman let him in and gave him milk and cake. Her daughter, kind and friendly, took him to a higher hill. As the sun set, the girl pointed to the distant hills.
“Look!” she said.
The boy was shocked. The golden windows he had dreamed of for so long were his own home!
The setting sun and warm lights from his house made the windows shine like gold.
He hurried home at once. When he returned, the warm lamplight and firelight shone softly. His mother kissed him, his sister hugged him, and his father smiled gently. The house was simple, but full of love and warmth.
“Have you learned your lesson?” his father asked.

Two Chinese Mathematicians Make History at the 2026 Fields Medal Ceremony
Known as “the Nobel Prize of mathematics”, the 2026 Fields Medals were announced on July 23 at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. Four young scientists got this world’s top prize for math.
Two winners, Deng Yu and Wang Hong, are Chinese and have caught great attention from media around the world. This is an important moment that has never happened before. For the first time, Chinese mathematicians won this award, ending Western countries’ control of this famous prize for many years. Both finished their college studies at Peking University and then went abroad to continue their research.
Given by the International Mathematical Union every four years, the Fields Medal is only open to scientists under 40. Every winner gets two official prizes: a 14-karat gold medal with a picture of Archimedes and 15,000 Canadian dollars. The prize honors important new discoveries in different areas of mathematics.
Deng Yu works as a professor at the University of Chicago. He showed great talent in math when he was young. He won a gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad during high school and studied for his bachelor’s degree at Peking University. His important research made great progress on a key problem in Hilbert’s Sixth Problem. He created strict mathematical models to connect tiny molecular movements and large fluid motion, linking pure mathematics and physics.
At the same time, Wang Hong is 35, the youngest winner. She entered Peking University when she was 16. Now she is a Silver Professor at New York University’s Courant Institute. She solved the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, a problem no one could work out for a hundred years. It sits at the crossing of harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory. She said her success came from teamwork. Her mathematical ideas help create new developments in cryptography and computer science.
The fact that they both studied at Peking University for college shows that China’s basic mathematics education has made great progress. Their historic success broadens worldwide top-level mathematical research and encourages young people to study basic science subjects.

六、回答问题
What makes a person from a small European country fall so deeply in love with Chinese culture? For Krasznahorkai, a famous Hungarian writer, the answer began with a trip in 1991.
Back then, he traveled to China as a reporter. He was so moved by what he saw. After he returned home, he didn’t just keep China in his memory—he brought Chinese culture into his daily life. He asked his whole family to eat with chopsticks. When they went out to eat, he always chose Chinese food. At home, he often listened to Beijing opera. Wherever he went, he collected books about China and followed news about China. He also often mentioned China in conversations.
His love grew even stronger over time. He became crazy about ancient Chinese culture. He read Laozi’s Tao Te Ching and fell in love with the poet Li Bai of the Tang Dynasty. He loves Li Bai for his courage and free spirit. To feel closer to him, Krasznahorkai took a long journey across China, following the very places Li Bai had once traveled to. He even gave himself a Chinese name, “Haoqiu”, which means “beautiful hill”. That name shows his respect for Confucius.
He has published many novels since his first novel came out in 1977. On October 9, 2025, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
In a 2017 interview, he thanked Chinese readers who love Hungarian books. His love for Chinese culture has truly brought the two literary worlds together. His story teaches us: When you truly love something, it becomes a part of who you are.

My Family Traditions
Every family has its own unique traditions, and mine are like warm sunshine in my life.
In my family, the most important tradition is having a big dinner together every Sunday. No matter how busy we are, we always sit around the table, share delicious food, and talk about our week. Another tradition is making dumplings during the Spring Festival. My grandparents teach me how to make them, and we always laugh a lot.
These traditions bring me great joy and a sense of belonging. They help me understand the importance of family and sharing. Whenever we are together, I feel truly loved and relaxed.
In my opinion, family traditions are very precious. They connect us and pass down love from generation to generation. I will definitely keep these traditions and pass them on to my future family.
