Tom knew every tree, river and secret path in the woods. But he was not one of them. As he grew older, he began to wonder about the world of human beings. One cold morning, Tom walked along a river for a long time until he arrived at a small town. Some children were playing games. When they saw the strange boy in animal clothes, they were surprised and ran away quickly. Then a farmer walked out, and Tom opened his hands to show that he was hungry. The farmer hurried back and called many other people. “Look,” one old man said, “this boy has lived in the forest for years.” And a lady called Anna walked closer. “He looks just like my son who got lost three years ago.” “Take him home, Anna,” other people said. “Maybe this is a gift from the forest.” So Anna took Tom to her house and gave him some food. It was Tom’s first time staying inside a house. He did not feel happy. The small room felt like a cage. He could not run freely as he did in the forest.” But I need to get used to human life,” Tom said to himself. “I should learn to talk and live like other people.” He was good at learning, and soon he picked up lots of new words from Anna. However, that night, Tom could not fall asleep indoors. He jumped out of the window and slept on the grass outside. Before he closed his eyes, a soft deer nose touched his face. It was Little White, one of his deer family members. “Wake up, my friend,” Little White said. “I bring bad news. The wolf group is coming near. They will look for you later.” “I know the danger,” Tom said. “Thank you for telling me. Will you keep sending me messages?” “Of course. C Chinese researchers have developed a new system that can gently stop hundred-ton aircraft during emergency (紧急的) landings on the runway. The system has recently received a national creation award. The researchers developed a new material called foam (泡沫) concrete (混凝土). It looks like common concrete but weighs just 200 kg per cubic metre—about a tenth of the weight of standard concrete. When an aircraft runs into it, the material creates a “soft stopper” that takes in energy through controlled breaking. This allows the plane to slow down smoothly and finally stop safely. Landing is one of the most dangerous periods of flight. International air travel rules require a safety area of at least 90 metres beyond runways. In the past, the area was filled with water, grass, soil, or sand. All of them had disadvantages: Water could become hard ice or attract wildlife, while soil strength changed with weather. The key challenge is controlling how the foam concrete breaks down. It must have enough strength to support aircraft wheels but be weak enough to collapse when hit. For example, for large passenger planes, its strength must fall exactly between 0.30 and 0.35 megapascals (兆帕). Unlike earlier foreign designs that depended on expensive but not long-lasting concrete, the Chinese team developed a method that made the system cheaper and more lasting. They also developed methods to put millions of bubbles into the material and control the way it turns hard, making sure it works well even after being used in the open air for a long time. The system has now been used at 14 airports across China. Tests show that after one year, the material’s properties (性能) change by only 3%, proving its high quality. 9. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. What the material looks like. B. How the material is made. C. What makes the system work well. D. How the system is developed. 10. What does the underlined word “collapse” most probably mean? A. Break. B. Form. C. Appear. D. Burn. 11. What is the key advantage of the system? A. It can stop an aircraft in a shorter time. B. It can slow down an aircraft smoothly. C. It can create a safety area of over 90 metres. D. It can be used in the open air. 12. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To introduce a new runway safety system. B. To explain a new flying technology. C. To describe some possible landing methods. D. To compare two different safety materials. D ①We’ve all been there—sitting in a meeting, classroom, or workshop, not understanding a concept (概念) but too afraid to ask questions. The fear of sounding silly keeps us silent. We tell ourselves that everyone else must already understand, that our question is “stupid”, and that it’s better to nod along than risk embarrassment (窘迫). ②But what if those “stupid” questions are the most valuable ones? What if they’re the key to encouraging creation, increasing confidence and connecting more meaningfully with others? ③There are no stupid questions. What we consider as “stupid” questions always challenge fixed thinking and cause great breakthroughs. Many new possibilities come from such questions, like Newton thinking about why apples fall to the ground and ancient thinkers questioning why the sun rises and sets. These questions break traditional thinking and lead to creative discoveries. ④Moreover, asking such questions builds personal confidence and connection between people. Each time we ask a “stupid” question, we’re reducing the fear of losing face. We become more and more confident. At the same time, by asking “stupid” questions, we invite real conversations. When we ask “stupid” questions, we allow others to ask their own. We tell others it’s okay not to know everything, creating a culture of openness and curiosity. This leads to deeper and more honest connections. ⑤In short, in a world that doesn’t give value to true curiosity but to appearing knowledgeable, asking “stupid” questions becomes a superpower. So, the next time you think of a “stupid” question, just ask it. Remember: It is not a sign of silliness, but a sign of courage and true learning. 13. What stops people asking questions about a concept that they don’t understand? A. The difficulty of the concept. B. The value of the concept. C. The worry about embarrassing others. D. The fear of losing face. 14. What does the writer think of “stupid” questions in the passage? A. They often lead to creative discoveries. B. They are often caused by fixed thinking. C. They often increase people’s fear of feeling silly. D. They are often asked by stupid people in conversations. 15. What is the best structure (结构) of the passage? A. ①/②/③④/⑤ B. ①②/③/④⑤ C. ①/②③/④⑤ D. ①/②③/④/⑤ 16. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Way of Asking “Stupid” Questions B. The Types of “Stupid” Questions C. The Power of Asking “Stupid” Questions D. The Cost of “Stupid” Questions 阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的六个选项中选出四个可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Horses were domesticated (驯养) in China thousands of years ago. For this reason, people are paying less attention to handwriting. As a result, they can’t even remember exactly how to write a given character sometimes. This is called “character amnesia (提笔忘字)”. To change the situation, the TV program named Chinese Character Dictation (听写) Competition came out. Meng Man, who teaches at Minzu University of China, took part in the competition as a judge. “I was surprised by some competitors because I couldn’t even remember how to write certain characters, but they could,” she said. “Now many adults have trouble writing Chinese characters. The program is really great, since it draws people’s attention to this problem.” When typing or texting, most people use a system where they type out the pinyin of a character and then get a list of all possible Chinese characters. They just need to choose the one they want from the list. The bad thing about the system is that it stops people from thinking about how a Chinese character is formed. “Chinese characters are usually square. They teach people to be upright (正直的). Typing or texting will influence people’s understanding of the traditional culture behind the Chinese characters,” Meng said. To solve the problem of “character amnesia”, experts suggest that people change their mobile phone texting way from pinyin to handwriting. In this way, they can avoid forgetting how to write characters. 41. What problem do some people face according to Paragraph 1? ____________________________________________________ 42. Why is the typing system bad for people when they write Chinese characters? ____________________________________________________ 43.
