Sport Changes Us
Lin Yue is a Grade Nine student whose attitude towards sport has changed a lot.
She joined the school badminton club last year. At first, she made many mistakes and avoided practising with others. Her coach encouraged her to set small goals. She then trained twice a week and listened carefully to her partner’s advice.
This term, she won a school match. Afterwards, she thanked her partner and helped new members practise. Her success grew from regular effort and a willingness to learn.
Her experience reminds me that progress takes time. We should accept useful advice and remember the people who help us improve.

At our first dragon boat lesson, I chose a seat near the front. I was one of the strongest swimmers in our class, so I expected paddling to be ____1____. Our coach, Ms Lin, checked our life jackets and explained the movements before we left the bank.
Once we were on the water, I pulled as hard as I could. Yet our boat moved from side to side, and water splashed over my shoes. I looked back, hoping to find someone else to ____2____. Then Ms Lin asked us to stop.
“Watch the pair in front of you,” she said. “Your strength cannot help the crew if your movements do not ____3____ theirs.” I had been lifting my paddle while they were still pulling. The problem was not a lack of effort, but a lack of ____4____.
We began again at a slower speed. This time, I listened to the count instead of trying to set my own pace. When a classmate missed a beat, I was tempted to ____5____ him. But shouting would make the count harder to hear. I kept my voice low and helped him find the rhythm.
Little by little, the boat began to move ____6____. I no longer needed to pull harder than everyone else. I needed to pull at the right ____7____. For the first time, I could feel how my movement affected the whole crew.
Back on the bank, Ms Lin asked what had changed. “We stopped working ____8____,” I answered. We had not become stronger during that short lesson. We had learnt to ____9____ one another. I still wanted our boat to be fast, but I now understood that going all out sometimes means ____10____ your own actions to help the group.

A
Trying a sport should not always begin with buying new equipment. The school’s Sports Kit Library lends basic equipment to students who want to try an activity before deciding whether to continue. It opens beside the gym from 12:20 to 12:50 on school days. Borrowing is free, but students must show their school card and complete a short record.
A student may borrow one kit at a time. A badminton kit contains two rackets and three shuttlecocks; a table tennis kit contains two bats and four balls. Kits must stay on the school grounds. They may be borrowed at lunchtime and kept until the end of the following school day. A kit borrowed on Friday must therefore be returned by the end of Monday, unless Monday is a school holiday. Return kits to the gym’s drop-off desk, which stays open until the end of each school day.
Check the contents with a library helper before taking a kit away. If a racket is already damaged or a ball is missing, ask the helper to record the problem. Do not try to hide it. A student who reports existing damage will not be blamed for causing it. If something breaks while you are using it, stop using that item and tell a helper when you return the kit.
Equipment can also be reserved through the school website. A reservation holds a kit until 12:40 on the chosen day. After that, it becomes available to other borrowers. Students who cannot collect a reserved kit should cancel online so someone else can use it.
The library welcomes clean, usable donations, but not every donated item goes straight onto the shelf. A PE teacher checks it first. The purpose is to make trying a new sport affordable while teaching students to care for things that other people will use next.
11.Who is the library especially intended to help?
A.Students selling equipment to raise money.
B.Players leaving school for an away match.
C.Students trying a sport before buying equipment.
D.Teachers choosing prizes for a competition.
12.A student borrows a kit on Friday. Monday is a normal school day. When is it due?
A.By the end of Monday.
B.Before lunchtime on Friday.
C.By the end of Tuesday.
D.At 12:40 on the following Friday.
13.What should a student do on finding a damaged racket before borrowing it?
A.Take it home and repair it.
B.Replace it without telling anyone.
C.Leave without completing a record.
D.Ask a helper to record the damage.
14.What happens to a reserved kit not collected by 12:40?
A.It is given to the PE teacher as a donation.
B.Other students may borrow it.
C.It is kept for that student all afternoon.
D.The reservation moves automatically to Friday.
15.Why are donated items checked before being lent out?
A.To keep only the newest brands.
B.To make every borrower buy a new kit.
C.To ensure the items are suitable for use.
D.To stop students from trying unfamiliar sports.

The notice beside the school long-jump pit was clear: a jump would not count if the jumper’s foot crossed the take-off line. Daniel knew the rule. He had practised all month, and this was his last attempt in the class competition.
He ran towards the pit, pushed off and landed farther than he had expected. His friends cheered. The volunteer near the line was reaching for a fallen clipboard and had not seen the take-off clearly. She raised the flag to show that the attempt counted. Another helper began measuring the jump.
Daniel walked back past the line. In the soft ground beside it, he could still see the front of his shoe print beyond the mark. He remembered feeling his toe cross it as he jumped. For a moment, he said nothing. The distance might put him in first place. The volunteer had already accepted the attempt; surely the decision belonged to her?
Then Daniel pictured the next practice. How could he use this distance as a target when he knew it had not come from a valid jump? He approached the volunteer and explained what had happened. After checking the mark with the PE teacher, she corrected the record. Daniel’s earlier, shorter jump remained his best, and he finished third.
His friend asked whether he regretted speaking up. Daniel looked at the result sheet. He would have liked to see his name at the top, but he did not want a distance he could not honestly claim. He circled his earlier result. That was the number he would try to improve next time. The next challenge now felt clear.
16.Why did the volunteer accept Daniel’s last attempt at first?
A.She wanted Daniel to win the competition.
B.She did not see the take-off clearly.
C.She decided to remove the take-off rule.
D.She had measured every earlier attempt.
17.Which detail helped Daniel confirm that his foot had crossed the line?
A.His friends’ loud cheering.
B.The place of his name on the notice.
C.The length of the measuring tape.
D.The shoe print beyond the mark.
18.What does the underlined word “valid” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Accepted under the rules.
B.Longer than all other jumps.
C.Performed without any practice.
D.Recorded by a close friend.
19.Which is the correct order of events?
① Daniel explained the mistake. ② A helper began measuring.
③ Daniel circled his earlier result. ④ The record was corrected.
A.①—②—④—③
B.②—④—①—③
C.②—①—④—③
D.③—①—②—④
20.What does Daniel’s action of circling his earlier result suggest?
A.He wanted the volunteer to restore first place.
B.He would use an honest result as his starting point.
C.He planned to stop attending long-jump practice.
D.He believed that third place was better than first.
C
Being able to perform a sports skill and being able to teach it are different things. A student who serves well in badminton may find it surprisingly hard to explain the movement to a beginner. The action feels natural to the experienced player, but the beginner has not yet learnt what to notice.
One difficulty is the amount of advice. A helpful partner may point out the feet, the elbow, the wrist and the racket all at once. Each comment may be correct, yet the learner cannot attend to everything at the same time. Choosing one point for the next attempt gives the learner a clearer task. Other details can wait.
Timing matters as well. If advice arrives during the movement, the learner may stop halfway through to listen. It is often more useful to watch a complete attempt, pause and then discuss it. A demonstration can help when words alone are unclear, especially if the learner watches from a position where the important movement is visible.
Good peer teaching also leaves room for the learner’s ideas. Ask what felt difficult before deciding what to explain. Two students who make similar-looking mistakes may be struggling with different parts of a movement. The first may not understand where to stand; the second may know the position but forget it when nervous. These calls for help need different responses.
Finally, a partner should avoid judging a lesson only by the very next shot. A learner may understand a point but still need several attempts to put it into action. Ask the learner to explain or demonstrate the chosen point, then allow time for practice. Teaching someone else can deepen our own understanding too: we discover which parts of a familiar skill we have never really thought about.
21.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.Every technical detail should be explained immediately.
B.Correct advice always leads to a successful attempt.
C.Beginners should avoid asking experienced players for help.
D.A learner can benefit from focusing on one point at a time.
22.Why may advice during a movement be less useful?
A.The learner may interrupt the movement to listen.
B.The teacher will forget all the other sports skills.
C.A demonstration can only be given before a lesson.
D.The learner will never need advice again.
23.What does “These calls for help” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Requests to choose the strongest player.
B.Questions about buying a new racket.
C.The two learners’ different difficulties.
D.Instructions given by nervous coaches.
24.Which action best follows the writer’s advice?
A.Correcting every mistake while a beginner is serving.
B.Discussing one difficulty after an attempt and allowing practice.
C.Deciding a beginner has learnt nothing after one missed shot.
D.Showing a movement from a place the beginner cannot see.
25.Which title best fits the passage?
A.Why Experienced Players Never Need Lessons
B.A Quick Way to Win Every Badminton Match
C.How to Select a Professional Sports Coach
D.Helping a Sports Partner Learn More Effectively
Winning several matches in a row can be exciting for a school team. It can also create a new worry: what if the next result breaks the winning run? ____26____ The team needs a way to keep success from becoming a burden.
Before the next match, name something the team can actually control. It might be getting back into position quickly or making sure everyone knows the plan. ____27____ A victory depends partly on the other team, but these actions do not.
Be careful with promises. Saying “We will never lose” may sound confident, but no player can guarantee that. ____28____ This is a commitment the team can keep even when the score is disappointing.
During the match, bring attention back to the present. If someone makes a mistake, talk about the next useful action instead of the old winning record. ____29____ The next pass or move still needs a clear mind.
Afterwards, discuss what the team did well and what needs work, whatever the result. A win can hide a problem, and a loss can contain real progress. ____30____ Keeping that habit helps players face both success and disappointment.
A.Try promising to prepare carefully and keep trying instead.
B.Players should avoid discussing any result with one another.
C.Such a task gives the players a focus beyond the final score.
D.Some players may start fearing a mistake more than enjoying the game.
E.Neither result removes the need for an honest review.
F.Thinking about past victories will not repair that mistake.

A
Trying a sport should not always begin with buying new equipment.
【答案】11.C 12.A 13.D 14.B 15.C

B
【答案】16.B 17.D 18.A 19.C 20.B

避免做某事;encourage sb. to do sth.鼓励某人做某事;twice a week每周两次;listen to one’s advice听取某人的建议。
Her experience reminds me that progress takes time.
