Best Walking Tours in London
London is one of the most walkable capital cities in the world. Walking through its streets lets you feel the city’s history, culture, and charm. So, lace up your sneakers — here are London’s best walking tours for your next visit.
Tour for Muggles
This is a can’t-miss trip in England. The tour starts near London Bridge subway station and moves on to locations used in the Harry Potter films (and several book locations). There’s one subway ride (London Bridge to Westminster) but otherwise it’s all on foot. Groups are limited to 20 and accept tourists of all ages.
East End Walks
East End Walks is a collection of 15 tours run by one man, David Rosenberg. The tours cover the social history of the traditionally working class area. There can be up to 30 in each group. You meet near the subway station. Rosenberg, whose grandparents moved to the East End as children, loves the area and its social history a lot — it holds the story of the working class.
Historic Pubs, Food & Beer Tour
Think of this as a walk with friends rather than a tour (groups are limited to 12). You meet at a best selfie spot — at Rotherhithe, overlooking the Thames — then catch the overground train to the pubs. By reservation only. Five of London’s most historic pubs in four hours is not an easy but worthwhile task.
Jermyn Street Fashion Walk
A seriously professional private tour to match your preferences. Groups are recommended no larger than eight, and it’s all done on foot. Most of the guides, who lead the Jermyn Street walk, have a background of art, history or fashion, and one even trained as a tailor.
1. Which tour best suits people who are interested in the history of the working class?
A. Tour for Muggles. B. Jermyn Street Fashion Walk.
C. East End Walks. D. Historic Pubs, Food & Beer Tour.
2. What do the four walking tours have in common?
A. They limit the number of a group. B. They have professional guides.
C. They are private tours to your preference. D. They recommend reservation in advance.
3. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. News report. B. Travel brochure. C. History textbook. D. Geographic magazine.
B
For many, Chinese characters seem like complex symbols. However, Lena, a 20-year-old American college student, views them in a unique way. To her, each character has its own story. She pictures “ren” (person) as a cat’s face, and “ceng” (once) as an angry robot.
Lena gained popularity when she spent only 30 minutes drawing “ceng” and posted it on Xiaohongshu. Amazingly, this simple drawing got 40,000 likes overnight. Now, her creative artworks raise discussions about language, art, and cultural exchange.
Growing up in a diverse community with many Asians, Lena was surrounded by different languages and cultures. “As a child, I had Chinese friends. I was fascinated by seeing their names on lunch boxes. This language was so new to me, completely different from Western languages,” Lena remembered. This early curiosity remained with her and reappeared in college during a US-China relations course, which deepened her interest in modern Chinese culture.
Deep in Xiaohongshu, Lena noticed more characters that looked like various objects. She describes herself as imaginative and highly perceptive, often spotting details others miss.
Besides drawing, Lena translates all her posts into Chinese to show respect to her followers. Her efforts have helped her make Chinese friends online, chatting about daily life and food. Some followers said Lena understands the beauty of Chinese characters better than many Chinese. “It’s because you’re used to them,” Lena replied, adding the opposite is also true. For example, she learned from Chinese friends that “orz” looks like a person bowing in apology, but it means nothing in English. “It’s something I never thought of. That’s the result of a non-native looking at unfamiliar characters,” she said.
As Lena plans to share more character-inspired art on Xiaohongshu, her story shows a truth: language is more than words; it’s about connection and understanding the world from others’ perspectives.
4. How did Lena become popular on Xiaohongshu?
A. By sharing her daily life in China.
B. By translating English articles into Chinese.
C. By having online chats with Chinese netizens.
D. By posting creative drawings of Chinese characters.
5. What deepened Lena’s interest in modern Chinese culture?
A. Her Chinese friends. B. A US-China relations course.
C. Using Xiaohongshu. D. Drawing Chinese characters.
6. Why did Lena mention the example “orz”?
A. To explain learning difficulty. B. To prove followers’ over-praise.
C. To show non-natives’ unique views. D. To analyze grammar differences.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Lena gains popularity on Xiaohongshu.
B. Diverse background fuels Lena’s interest.
C. Chinese characters: more than simple symbols.
D. Creative characters bridge language and culture.
C
Think necessity is the mother of invention? Not always. There is a very thin line between brilliant innovation and absolute failure, as some of the inventors famously found out.
Some of the most popular products we use today were accidents found by scientists — cooks who spilled things, and misguided inventors who — in the case of the glue used on Post-it notes — were trying to create the opposite of what they ended up with. But we can all take comfort in knowing even some huge mistakes can come with great ideas. And sometimes, even forgetting to wash your hands has its advantages.
You know how when you’re done with a Post-it note, you throw it in the wastebasket? Yeah, that was pretty much what Spencer Silver almost did when he was trying to develop a super strong adhesive (粘合剂) for 3M labs in 1968 and failed to find any wise way. Instead, he had invented the opposite: an adhesive that stuck to objects but could be easily lifted off.
Silver marketed the possible uses of his new, sort-of-weak glue around 3M for years, all to deaf ears. Finally, a colleague named Art Fry attended one of Silver’s seminars (研讨会) in 1974 (3M has long been known for encouraging employees to step outside of their own departments to see what people in other areas of the company are doing). Fry saw a use where no one else did: holding his page in his book, which his bookmarks kept falling out of. And when you added Silver’s mild adhesive to paper bookmarks, a first Post-it note was born. Not to let you think this is just silly company legend, even the Web fact-checker Snopes.com gave this a “True” rating.
3M finally agreed to distribute the Post-it notes nationwide in 1980, a decade after Silver had first happened to find the use. Forty years later, they’d be as important to the American office as the stapler (订书器) and the fax machine.
8. Silver invented Post-it notes when he ______.
A. attended a seminar B. put his bookmark in his book
C. talked to his colleague Art Fry D. tried to invent a super strong adhesive
9. Why did Art Fry go to Silver’s seminar?
A. To borrow a Post-it note. B. To see what Silver was doing.
C. To help market Silver’s mild glue. D. To find out the use of Silver’s glue.
10. What can we learn from the text?
A. Silver’s Post-it note was accepted as soon as it was invented.
B. Art Fry made Silver’s invention popular around America.
C. Post-it notes are not widely used in the American office.
D. Silver was not a man to give up easily.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Wonderful Inventions Made by Mistake B. Big Inventors, Small Inventions
C. Inspiration and Inventions D. A Great Inventor

【答案】Dear Tom,
Thank you for writing to me. In your last letter, you asked me about my Senior High school life. Now I will tell you. We learn more after entering Senior High school. In other words, learning is more difficult now because what we learn in class covers more than that in the class of Junior High school. However, we all take serious attitudes towards all the subjects and our teachers give us careful instructions in class. What’s more, our after-class activities are divided into many kinds. In my opinion, our Senior High school life is far from boring and dull.
Would you like to tell your school life to me? Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
