I was in terrible pain last week when I could hardly turn my head. My neck and shoulders were extremely painful and my head was locked. I walked into this tui na clinic right by where I am staying and was willing to let anyone massage (按摩) my neck. In walked Wu Shifu.
I was head down on the table and before I even spoke, he said, “You have a problem with your vertebra (脊椎),” pointing to my C7. “It is completely locked. Your qi is not flowing. You are in pain all over.” He started massaging my neck, shoulders and head, pulling my neck and my arms in such a way that it was painful but good.
He later asked me to sit up and moved on to adjusting my C7. That was scary. The thought of “Would he break my neck?” repeatedly crossed my mind when he did his things, which included using my own body weight to stretch my back, kneeling on my back to apply pressure to my vertebrae and pulling my head up using a towel. All seemed very scary and risky to me. But I didn’t say a word from beginning to end because it felt right and good.
The Chinese word for beautiful is piao liang; the literal translation is pretty for piao and bright for liang. This man said to me, “You may be pretty but you are not liang because your qi is not flowing and not brightening your face.” It shook me — and made me question everything I thought I knew about what “looking good” really means.
I was loosened and felt so much better afterwards. I was a puppet (木偶) with messy strings before I saw Wu Shifu. Afterwards, I could walk and turn, and I felt I was flexible again. I wish I could bring him back home with me to New York. I take my hat off to all Chinese masters for their devotion to this medicine!

6. What did the author say about Wu’s explanation of piao liang?
A. It raised her awareness of her health. B. It overturned her standard for beauty.
C. It made her ashamed about her figure. D. It expanded her knowledge of Chinese.

The bright yellow Big Lemon buses are a familiar sight on the roads of Brighton. For nine years the company has run all its vehicles on waste cooking oil from local restaurants, recycled into biofuel, but now it wants to go one step further.
The Big Lemon wants to add solar panels to the roof of its east Brighton garage, storing the energy in batteries and charging buses overnight. It is working with the Brighton Energy Cooperative (BEC) towards a vision of zero-emission bus services in every UK community by 2030.
The key thing about The Big Lemon idea is that the energy will be generated on site. “If we run on mains electricity then we still have a large carbon footprint,” says Tom Druitt, managing director of The Big Lemon.
The Big Lemon has decided to convert (改造) its current buses to run on electric power, instead of buying new electric buses. Work has begun on the first buses. Druitt estimates that The Big Lemon will save around £20,000 a year in fuel costs and achieve a reduction in maintenance costs. “We’ve estimated that there’s a six-year payback on these buses and we’re calculating for an eight-year working life, so essentially we get two years free,” he explains.
How easy will this idea be to reproduce elsewhere? Will Cottrell, chairman of BEC, says that in theory it should be easy. “I think the main issue will be whether you can get enough energy from the solar to fully power the vehicles,” he says. “Not feeding it into the grid (电网) makes it a bit more difficult as you come across this common issue with renewables: they’re unstable. You need to think quite hard about how it works technically,” he adds, explaining that getting the right size battery and overall system is key to providing the right level of supply.
“But this is the way it’s got to be,” Cottrell says. “To move us away from a centralised energy system we need to move away from a centralised grid as well, so we need to understand the technology that is going to enable us to do that.”
8. What is the purpose of The Big Lemon’s new plan?
A. To provide nationwide bus services. B. To offer fully green transportation.
C. To cut reliance on local restaurants. D. To replace its outdated biofuel buses.
9. What do the statistics in paragraph 4 show about the new plan?
A. It is fairly cost-effective. B. It is readily profitable.
C. It is technically innovative. D. It is largely self-sufficient.
10. What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Making the renewables stable. B. Designing right-size batteries.
C. Having a decentralised energy system. D. Generating energy wherever it is needed.
11. What is Cottrell’s attitude to The Big Lemon idea?
A. Supportive. B. Disapproving. C. Uninterested. D. Ambiguous.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. A

【导语】本文介绍英国大柠檬公交公司以屋顶太阳能为电动公交供电、实现零排放运营的新计划及业内看法。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“For nine years the company has run all its vehicles on waste cooking oil from local restaurants, recycled into biofuel, but now it wants to go one step further.(九年来,该公司一直使用来自当地餐馆的废弃食用油 —— 再循环制成生物燃料 —— 来运营其所有车辆,但现在它想更进一步)”以及第二段“The Big Lemon wants to add solar panels to the roof of its east Brighton garage, storing the energy in batteries and charging buses overnight. It is working with the Brighton Energy Cooperative (BEC) towards a vision of zero-emission bus services in every UK community by 2030.(大柠檬想在其东布莱顿车库的屋顶上加装太阳能电池板,将能量储存在电池中,并在夜间为公交车充电。它正在与布莱顿能源合作社合作,朝着到2030年在每个英国社区实现零排放公交服务的愿景而努力)”可知,新计划用太阳能发电给电动公交充电,目标是零排放,即提供完全绿色的交通。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Druitt estimates that The Big Lemon will save around £20,000 a year in fuel costs and achieve a reduction in maintenance costs. “We’ve estimated that there’s a six-year payback on these buses and we’re calculating for an eight-year working life, so essentially we get two years free,” he explains.(Druitt估计大柠檬每年将节省约2万英镑的燃料成本,并实现维护成本的降低。“我们估计这些公交车有六年的回收期,而我们计算的是八年的工作寿命,所以本质上我们有两年是免费的,”他解释道)” 可知,改造后每年省燃料费、维护费下降,六年回本、八年寿命相当于白用两年,这些数据说明新计划相当划算、具有成本效益。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段““But this is the way it’s got to be,” Cottrell says. “To move us away from a centralised energy system we need to move away from a centralised grid as well, so we need to understand the technology that is going to enable us to do that.”(“但这是它必须走的路,”Cottrell 说。“为了让我们摆脱集中式能源系统,我们也需要摆脱集中式电网,所以我们需要了解将使我们能够做到这一点的技术 ”)”可知,this后一句紧接着解释要“摆脱集中式能源系统和集中式电网”,即this指的是走向分散式的能源系统。
【11题详解】

The voice is the music of the soul, linked to a person’s character and inner life. In fact, the sound of your voice may reveal more than you realize — for instance, details of your physical and mental health, your cultural and educational backgrounds, and even your political preferences.
Scientists are increasingly learning how to use computers to track these speech patterns, but some scholars are sounding the alarm. Today, speech-recording devices are everywhere, in smart speakers and phones and in the voice control systems in TVs, cars, and appliances. Some of these systems can monitor surrounding sounds so they can recognize specific wake-up words.
The recordings of your voice that the systems collect could one day be used against you, warns Tom Bäckström, professor of speech and language technology at Aalto University in Finland: to tailor ads to your interests, needs or emotional states, or to screen you for certain jobs.
To deter abuse, Bäckström and his teammates are working to develop protective measures and technologies. They recently published a paper in the Proceedings of the IEEE that reviews the potential risks posed by speech-recording technologies and the measures that could be taken to protect against those risks.
The team built a metric (度量标准) which is the first, they claim, that can capture how much is revealed in any one audio (声音的) recording of a voice. Bäckström says the technology could be used specifically to help people understand how much of their privacy is at risk when they use certain speech-recording technologies. The team is also working to build technologies that can shorten, change speech, or hide the identity of the speaker, so that only the essential information gets conveyed when a person uses a speech-recording technology.
The speech technology privacy field is in its early stages, and many open questions for study still remain. Ultimately, much of the responsibility will lie with the companies that make speech-activated technologies. The ethical (合乎道德的) thing to do is build systems that minimize what they hear, record, remember, and infer. Because the machines are learning to listen — in ways that a human never could.
12. What are some scholars worried about?
A. Privacy risks revealed through our voice.
B. The huge loss of uniqueness in our speech.
C. Our health problems caused by digital devices.
D. Our reduced ability to communicate effectively.
13. What does the underlined word “deter” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Delay. B. Study. C. Explain. D. Prevent.
14. What has Bäckström’s team already developed?
A. A tool to enhance voice clarity. B. A method for transposing speech.
C. A way to quantify information exposure. D. An approach to assessing speakers’ identities.
15. What does the author expect the technology companies to do?
A. Develop more complicated machines. B. Limit the data their systems collect.
C. Prioritize ethical principles over profit. D. Inform the public about data protection.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. B

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My neighbor, Mrs. Gable, treats her garden like an art gallery. She has spent years planting roses and daisies (雏菊).
Last month, she had to go away for two weeks to visit her sister who had fallen ill. Before she left, she came to our door with a gentle smile and a small request. “Could you please water my flowers every evening?” she asked. “They don’t need much, just a little care.”
I agreed immediately. For the first few days, I took the responsibility seriously. Each evening at sunset, I carried the watering can across the street and made sure every plant had enough water. However, during the second week, my life became unusually busy. I had three important exams at school, a part-time job in the afternoons, and piles of homework waiting every night. One evening, I came home exhausted and forgot about the garden. The next evening, I remembered — but I was too tired to go outside. I told myself, “The plants are strong. They can wait one more day.”
But the weather didn’t wait. That week turned out to be extremely hot. When I finally remembered and rushed over with the watering can, my heart sank. The roses looked weak, their leaves hanging low. The daisies were turning brown. I tried to water them quickly, hoping it wasn’t too late, but deep down I knew the damage had been done.
I felt a sharp pain of guilt in my chest. The next morning when Mrs. Gable returned, I stayed inside. From my window, I watched her walk into her garden. When she saw the flowers, she stood there for a long moment. However, she didn’t call my name or knock on my door.
Another afternoon, I saw her outside, cutting away the dead leaves. I wanted to apologize, yet I thought, “Maybe she isn’t that angry,” or “Maybe she thinks it was just the heat.” But my conscience (良心) wouldn’t let me rest. I remembered how she always brought us extra vegetables from her garden and how she had trusted me.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I decided I had to make it right.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Over the next few weeks, I helped her in the garden whenever I could.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I decided I had to make it right. That afternoon, I went to the local nursery and bought new seedlings. Taking a deep breath, I knocked on Mrs. Gable’s door and told her everything — the exams, the exhaustion, and most importantly, my failure. My voice shook as I apologized. She listened quietly, then surprised me by smiling softly. “Plants can be replaced,” she said. “What matters is that you cared enough to come and tell me.” Together, we planted the new flowers, our hands muddy and our conversation gentle, like old friends starting again.
Over the next few weeks, I helped her in the garden whenever I could. With watering can in hand, I leaned forward. Water flowed out steadily, soaking the dry soil bit by bit. Slowly, green shoots appeared, and life returned to the soil. As I watched the new plants grow, I realized Mrs. Gable’s garden was no longer just something beautiful to look at. It had taught me something deeper than responsibility. It became a living reminder that trust, like a delicate plant, once wounded, can heal and regrow with honesty, effort, and a caring heart.

4. How did Wu identify the author’s C7 problem?
A. By talking with her. B. By reading her body.
C. By pulling her arms. D. By massaging her neck.
5. Why did the author keep silent during her C7 treatment?
A. She felt too scared. B. She was asked to do so.
C. She was in too much pain. D. She trusted Wu’s methods.
6. What did the author say about Wu’s explanation of piao liang?
A. It raised her awareness of her health. B. It overturned her standard for beauty.
C. It made her ashamed about her figure. D. It expanded her knowledge of Chinese.
7. Which word best describes the author’s overall experience?
A. Eventful. B. Frightening. C. Transformative. D. Embarrassing.

D. Ambiguous.

A Guide to Litter Picking
Litter picking is a great way to have an immediate impact on your neighbourhood environment. ________16________ However, it’s important to be careful when picking up rubbish. Here are our top tips for staying safe while litter picking!
Think about your location.
Beaches, woodland paths, city streets… you can find rubbish almost anywhere that humans have been! However, often the places where you find the most litter are the ones that we use the most regularly, such as areas near roads. While you can achieve great results from litter picking along roadsides, this can also be very dangerous. Make sure you stay away from busy highways. Ensure you wear something bright so you can be easily seen. __________17__________
Stay safe.
While litter picking, you often find items that aren’t particularly clean. Many times, the rubbish has sat there for so long that it’s covered in dirt and bacteria. That’s why it’s very important to stay safe and healthy when picking up rubbish. ________18________
You don’t want to be using your bare hands. Always make sure you have a bottle of hand sanitiser (洗手液) in your pocket for when you’re done!
________19________
Just imagine, you’ve finished picking up for the day, and you’ve got a full bag of rubbish that you’re taking to the bin! And then — disaster! Your bag is broken, and everything has fallen back onto the floor. To avoid this happening, don’t pick up anything sharp. If something looks likely to tear your bag open, then just leave it. __________20__________
A. Be careful what you collect.
B. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
