It started in a jeep, on an ordinary ride home from school. Sixth grader Harrison Burgess sat in the car, with his dad listening to news reports about the deadly wildfires in Los Angeles. His heart sank. But unlike most moments that passed in his daily life, this one stayed with him.
“I told my dad I wanted to do something to help,” Harrison recalled. “People had lost everything. I couldn’t just sit with that.”
Years earlier, Harrison’s father had lost his childhood home to a house fire. Harrison remembered hearing how the Red Cross had stepped in when everything was gone. “That story made it real for me,” Harrison said. “I wanted to help people in the same situation my dad had been in.”
Harrison approached the principal of his school, Steve Ruthford, and together they created a plan to raise funds for the Red Cross. Still, Harrison had to face his own fear. “I have stage fright,” he admitted. “But I stood in front of my classmates and talked about the fundraiser anyway. My teachers were there for support, and that helped.”
With posters, morning announcements, and a donation jar in the office, the campaign took off. Slowly, coins and bills poured in — each one a testament (证明) to the generosity of students, teachers, and families who believed in the cause.
“I was really surprised by how much we raised,” Harrison said. What mattered most to Harrison was that many people joined him. “I wasn’t the only one who helped,” he said. “My parents, friends, and teachers — so many people made this happen. It took a community to do big things.”
“I don’t really know my role in the world yet,” Harrison said. “But this helps me figure it out. I know I want to have a positive impact.” To the families who may receive the money, Harrison would simply say, “I’m glad we could help you in a tough time.”
4. How did Harrison feel when he heard about the wildfires?
A. Distant. B. Curious. C. Concerned. D. Scared.
5. Why did Harrison decide to launch the campaign?
A. He was moved by the survivors’ courage.
B. He was inspired by his father’s experience.
C. He was encouraged by his teachers’ support.
D. He was amazed by the Red Cross’s kindness to Steve.
6. What did Harrison want to emphasize about the campaign in paragraph 6?
A. It was promoted through combined efforts.
B. It required plenty of careful planning.
C. It erased public doubt about him.
D. It enabled people to honor him.
7. What can we learn from the story?
A. A hardship can shape one’s character.
B. A shared goal has a short-lived effect.
C. A brave choice can affect one’s future.
D. A small act can make a big difference.

Cornell researchers have developed a new glove called EdemaFlex to reduce swelling for people suffering from edema (水肿). The glove has more than 30 actuators across the fingers and palm.
It’s the latest version of the technology from Cindy Kao, associate professor of human centered design in the College of Human Ecology, who previously developed KnitDema, which used gentle pressure to reduce swelling in one finger. Later, she developed MediKnit, a better way to make soft medical devices. “The lower extremities have always been part of our goal,” Kao said. “We’re also thinking about it in terms of women’s health and in other body locations. We definitely see a lot of potential.”
EdemaFlex works by giving pressure from the ends of the fingers toward the palm and wrist. This helps move fluid out of the swollen hand. The pressure can be changed to meet the needs of different patients. One challenge was deciding how to place the parts of the glove without affecting the systems that carry blood and fluid in the hand.
“Clinicians help to identify specific patient needs based on their individual condition and reason for hand swelling,” said Dr. Joan Stilling, a professor at Weill Cornell Medicine. “Dr. Kao and her team bring advanced techniques and testable prototypes (样机) with visual feedback to the clinic. Our strong partnership allows for the optimization of the devices that are easily used, effective and address real-world problems.”
The researchers tested the glove with seven people over three days, including a one-day home-based trial. Clinicians conducted fittings with each patient and sent measurements back to the lab via a software design platform. Over the course of the study, most participants experienced a 3% to 5% reduction in hand volume, although one participant had a 25% reduction.
“We got some results,” Kao said. “They responded very favorably in terms of thermal safety, and the ease of being able to just wear something and not have to go to a doctor’s office for treatment.”
8. What does the author try to explain in paragraph 2?
A. How doctors test EdemaFlex.
B. Why the treatment for edema is costly.
C. Why patients with edema prefer home treatment.
D. How the technology from Kao and her team has developed.
9. What does the underlined word “optimization” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Invention. B. Copy. C. Improvement. D. Failure.
10. Which can best describe the result of the test?
A. Amusing. B. Unreliable. C. Unexpected. D. Encouraging.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. A Smart Glove for Everyday Hand Care
B. A Soft-robotic Glove for Swelling Relief
C. A Medical Device for Better Blood Flow
D. A Creative Method of Caring for the Elderly
D 9. C 10. D 11. B

D
Hand gestures play an important role in conveying meaning, and their comprehension has attracted researchers. However, the investigation has been challenging because of the complexity of gestures: The meaning of gestures can depend on speech or can be independent of speech, and hand gestures can describe concrete meanings or abstract meanings, and social or non-social meanings. These variables have made it hard to explore how the brain understands these hand gestures.
Earlier studies found that several parts of the brain became active when people understood gestures. Some of these areas were also involved in understanding language and actions. This suggested that gestures and language might share some brain activity.
Still, the researchers knew they could not simply accept the results. Many earlier studies had only a small number of people, and the tasks were not always the same. In addition, fMRI, a way of looking at activity in the brain, does not measure brain activity directly. Other factors, such as breathing and body movement, can also influence the results. As a result, findings from earlier research might not give a complete picture.
The researchers therefore decided to look at many studies together. They used a method called activation likelihood estimation, or ALE. Instead of depending on one experiment, they compared results from a large number of experiments. This helped them find brain areas that appeared again and again during gesture comprehension.
The team also paid special attention to two things: gesture type and task demand. Some gestures, such as iconic gestures, usually go with speech, while others, such as emblems, can be understood on their own. In some tasks, people were asked to focus on gestures; in others, they were not. The researchers found that these differences could affect brain activity.
Their work gave scientists a clearer picture of how people understand gestures. More importantly, it showed that the way people communicate is closely connected with the way the brain works. The findings may also help future researchers study children and people with brain disorders.
12. Why is it difficult to study how the brain understands gestures?
A. Gestures may carry different kinds of meaning.
B. People respond to the same gesture differently.
C. Gestures are frequently used in communication.
D. Researchers lack ways to observe human actions.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The limits of earlier research findings.
B. The causes of different brain activities.
C. The methods used to improve fMRI studies.
D. The reasons for studying gestures with fMRI.
14. What is the main advantage of ALE?
A. It provides direct measures of brain activity.
B. It helps reduce the cost of experiments.
C. It combines evidence from different studies.
D. It makes fMRI experiments easier to perform.
15. What does the last paragraph suggest about the current research?
A. It benefits people with communication problems.
B. It may contribute to further research on brain problems.
C. It changes how people communicate with others.
D. It may prove gestures are more critical than speech.
A 13. A 14. C 15. B

These variables have made it hard to explore how the brain understands these hand gestures.(然而,由于手势的复杂性,相关研究一直面临挑战:手势的意义可能与语言相关,也可能独立于语言;手势可以描述具体或抽象的意义,以及社交或非社交的意义。
根据第三段“Many earlier studies had only a small number of people, and the tasks were not always the same. In addition, fMRI, a way of looking at activity in the brain, does not measure brain activity directly. Other factors, such as breathing and body movement, can also influence the results. As a result, findings from earlier research might not give a complete picture.(许多早期研究的受试者数量很少,而且采用的实验任务并不统一。此外,功能性磁共振成像(fMRI)虽然可以观测大脑活动,但无法直接测量大脑活动。呼吸、肢体运动等其他因素也会干扰实验结果。因此,早期研究得出的结论可能不够全面。)”可知,早期研究存在样本量小、实验任务不统一等问题,且fMRI无法直接测量大脑活动,容易受到其他因素干扰。因此,本段主要阐述先前研究成果存在的局限性。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Instead of depending on one experiment, they compared results from a large number of experiments. This helped them find brain areas that appeared again and again during gesture comprehension.(该方法不依赖单一实验,而是对比大量实验的结果。这有助于找到人们理解手势过程中反复被激活的大脑区域。)”可知,ALE方法不依赖单一实验,而是对比大量不同实验的结果,其主要优势在于整合多项研究的证据。
【15题详解】

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Let’s face it: The holidays aren’t always the most relaxing time of the year. You’re busy with buying presents, mailing cards, and attending events. And you’re often navigating complicated family dynamics while feeling pressured to create perfect memories. ____16____ That feeling is referred to as “functional freeze”.
People regard “functional freeze” as being “tired and wired” — anxiety mixed with exhaustion. Some say that “freeze mode” is similar to dissociating, escaping, or feeling like they’re in a fog. Others explain that though they might be participating in social activities, they aren’t enjoying themselves and feel emotionally numb (麻木的). ____17____ She indicates it gives people a language with a certain kind of dignity for describing what they’re experiencing, and that simply saying “I’ve lost my motivation” isn’t quite persuasive.
The word “freeze” suggests a survival instinct. So, maybe the most important text messages receive a reply. Work assignments get done. The children are fed. ____18____ The feeling may arise from being overwhelmed by the demands of everyday life. It could also be a product of information overload.
____19____ For example, if you are feeling emotionally numb, is there something in particular that you want to be numb to? If so, can you think about how to deal with that? For general feelings of stress and overwhelm, it’s suggested that you practice yoga, tai chi, or running to tune into your body and feel calmer.
Above all, avoid telling yourself that you’re unable to function, and therefore you can’t do things. Actually, you’re not powerless to change it. ____20____
A. An expert thinks highly of this wording.
B. You’d better ignore the emotional numbness.
C. You are able to adapt and move beyond adversity.
D. The result is great stress that leaves you emotionally worn out.
E. Instead, different people understand “functional freeze” correctly.
F. You can focus on your main concerns and address them one by one.
G. But you can hardly motivate yourself to do anything beyond the essentials.
D 17. A 18. G 19. F 20. C
由上文“You’re busy with buying presents, mailing cards, and attending events. And you’re often navigating complicated family dynamics while feeling pressured to create perfect memories. (你忙着买礼物、寄贺卡、参加活动。你还经常在处理复杂的家庭关系的同时,承受着创造完美回忆的压力。)”以及下文“That feeling is referred to as “functional freeze”. (那种感觉被称为‘功能性冻结’。)”可知,上文列举了假期中的各种压力和忙碌,下文则给这种感受命名,因此本空需要说明这些压力导致的结果/状态,从而引出“functional freeze”这个概念,D选项“The result is great stress that leaves you emotionally worn out. (结果是巨大的压力让你情感上疲惫不堪。)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“The result”指代上文的各种压力源,且该选项中的“emotionally worn out”与下文的“functional freeze”相呼应,表示压力导致的状态。
【17题详解】
由上文“Some say that “freeze mode” is similar to dissociating, escaping, or feeling like they’re in a fog. Others explain that though they might be participating in social activities, they aren’t enjoying themselves and feel emotionally numb (麻木的). (有人说“冻结模式”类似于解离、逃避或感觉像在雾中。其他人解释说,尽管他们可能正在参加社交活动,但他们并不享受,感到情感麻木。)”以及下文“She indicates it gives people a language with a certain kind of dignity for describing what they’re experiencing, and that simply saying ‘I’ve lost my motivation’ isn’t quite persuasive. (她指出,它为人们提供了一种带有某种尊严的语言来描述他们的经历,并且,仅仅说一句‘我失去动力了’是不太有说服力的。)”可知,上文是不同人对“freeze mode”的描述,下文出现了“她指出”,说明有一位女性对此发表了专业评价,A选项“An expert thinks highly of this wording. (一位专家对这个说法评价很高。)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“An expert”与下文的“She”相呼应,且该选项中的“thinks highly of this wording”与下文的“gives people a language with a certain kind of dignity”相呼应,表示专家认可“功能性冻结”这一术语的价值。
由上文“The word “freeze” suggests a survival instinct. So, maybe the most important text messages receive a reply. Work assignments get done. The children are fed. (“冻结”一词暗示了一种生存本能。所以,也许最重要的短信会得到回复。工作任务完成了。孩子们有饭吃。)”以及下文“The feeling may arise from being overwhelmed by the demands of everyday life. (这种感觉可能源于被日常生活的需求所压倒。)”可知,上文列举了仅能完成最基本生存任务的状态,下文则解释这种感觉的来源。因此本空需要进一步说明这种“生存模式”的局限,G选项“But you can hardly motivate yourself to do anything beyond the essentials. (但你几乎无法激励自己做基本需求之外的任何事情。)”能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“But”表示转折,承接上文的“survival instinct”和基本任务完成,且该选项中的“beyond the essentials”与上文的“most important text messages receive a reply. Work assignments get done. The children are fed”形成对比,表示只能完成最基本的事情。
由下文“For example, if you are feeling emotionally numb, is there something in particular that you want to be numb to? If so, can you think about how to deal with that? For general feelings of stress and overwhelm, it’s suggested that you practice yoga, tai chi, or running... (例如,如果你感到情感麻木,是否有某种特定的事情你想要对其麻木?如果是,你能想想如何处理吗?对于一般的压力和不知所措感,建议你练习瑜伽、太极或跑步,以此感知自身身体状态,让自己平复下来。)”可知,下文是具体的应对方法举例,先分析具体原因再给出解决方案。因此本空需要提出一个总体的应对策略,作为下文举例的总起。F选项“You can focus on your main concerns and address them one by one. (你可以关注你的主要问题并逐一解决。)”能引出下文,符合题意,该选项中的“focus on your main concerns”与下文的“is there something in particular”相呼应,且该选项中的“address them one by one”与下文的“how to deal with that”相呼应,表示应对功能性冻结的具体方法。

In my hometown, Green Hill Park is a beautiful park, which plays a vital role in the local ecosystem.
To protect it, joint efforts are needed. For one thing, visitors should be forbidden to pick flowers or feed wild animals. For another, it’s essential to keep the park tidy by sorting rubbish properly. In addition, taking part in tree-planting activities also makes a difference.
Let’s take action right now! Only when everyone does their part can we live in harmony with nature and pass on a greener world to future generations.

Over the years, Mom and I seemed to live on different schedules. I left early for school, stayed late for clubs, and disappeared into my room after dinner. Mom managed a neighborhood bakery and often came home smelling faintly of flour and coffee. We talked, of course, but mostly about practical things — homework, tests, and whether I had remembered my keys.
Lately, even those conversations had grown shorter. A new bakery had opened across the street from Mom’s shop, drawing away customers with its bright windows and fashionable desserts. Mom never complained, but I noticed the unopened bills beside her laptop and the tired way she rubbed her forehead at night. At first, I worried about her. Soon, however, school filled my attention again. Mom’s problems belonged to the adult world, I told myself.
That Friday, I stayed after school to help prepare for our spring arts festival. My job was to paint a huge paper backdrop (背景幕布) for the stage. Unfortunately, the sunset I had imagined turned into a mess of orange and purple. Frustrated, I carried the half-finished backdrop home, planning to hide it in the garage and start over the next morning.
Mom arrived while I was carelessly spreading it across the garage floor. She looked extremely tired. I expected her to walk straight inside. Instead, she stopped. For several seconds, she stared at my crooked (不直的) buildings and strangely colored sky. Then her expression softened. “I used to paint,” she said quietly.
I almost laughed, thinking she was joking. After we stepped into the house, Mom pulled open an old drawer in her bedroom and took out a dusty wooden box. Inside lay brushes, colorful paints, and a photograph of a much younger mom standing proudly beside a beautiful painting. I had never seen that part of her. She picked up one of the brushes, then hesitated. “It’s been years.” Something in her voice made me move aside and hand her a blue paint.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
Eventually, I persuaded Mom to help me make changes to the painting on the backdrop.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After the backdrop won recognition, we decided to paint on one window of the bakery together.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Eventually, I persuaded Mom to help me make changes to the painting on the backdrop. She knelt down on the garage floor, gently brushing new colors over my messy sunset. Her hands, usually busy with dough, moved steadily and skilfully. She softened the sharp lines of the buildings and blended the orange and purple into a warm, glowing sky. We painted side by side, and the ugly backdrop finally turned into a wonderful piece of art. When the backdrop was displayed at the arts festival, it received high praise from the teachers and students.
After the backdrop won recognition, we decided to paint on one window of the bakery together. We chose a lovely spring theme with flowers and soft sunlight. Customers stopped to watch us paint and praised our work. Many of them came into the shop to buy bread and desserts. Mom’s business slowly got better. More importantly, we no longer lived on different schedules. Painting brought us closer, and we began to share not only small daily matters, but also our dreams and worries.

C

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
Eventually, I persuaded Mom to help me make changes to the painting on the backdrop.
