Most students have 10-minute breaks between classes. They can do some exercise, talk with each other and relax during the time. However, to keep their students safe, some schools don’t let them leave the classroom during breaks—unless they need to go to the toilet. “They cannot go outside to play and relax”, a parent says in an interview (采访).
To give students a real rest, primary and middle schools began to add five more minutes to break time between classes from this autumn term.
According to the new rule, each school should have a 30-minute big break in the morning and another in the afternoon. Students should have at least 90 minutes of break time each day in primary schools and at least 105 minutes in middle schools. With the new rule, students will have more time to relax, rest, and play outside. This can help them keep healthy and avoid myopia (近视).
To help students use their break time better, many schools in Beijing are working hard. For example, Dianchanglu Primary School sets a climbing wall for its students. Qianjiadian Central Primary School builds a “Happy Farm” for students to do some farm work. Huashi Primary School holds an art show in the hallway. Students can enjoy great paintings during the break.
What do you think of these activities? Do you have more great ideas for break time?

Taking notes is an important part of learning. Students listen to the teacher. They write down the important things. Or they use a computer. These days, many students take a computer to class to type (打字) their notes.
Some people think that using a computer is better. People type faster than they write. That means they can take more notes. If you can type fast, you can type every word the teacher says.
Computers are becoming very common in classrooms. Almost every student in university has a computer small enough to take to class in order to type notes. Fewer students write things down. So there is a trend in schools now to spend less time on teaching kids how to write. Schools are moving away from teaching younger students how to write by hand. Many people see no need for writing by hand.
However, studies advise that it is good to write things down. When people can’t write every word, they have to think about it more. They have to pick out what is important. And the act of writing seems to help them to remember. Studies show that people who write down their notes remember the information better. A new study, done by Princeton University and University of California, found that students who took notes by hand learned more than those who used a computer. In the study, 65 university students listened to the teacher and took notes with pens or computers. Then they did tests about how well they remembered and understood the lesson. Results show that pen users do better than those who take notes with their computers.
18.People think it’s better to use a computer to take notes because they can __________.
A.type faster than they write B.find everything on computer
C.get more useful information D.get every word the teacher says
19.If we say something is a “trend”, we may mean it is “becoming __________”.
A.impossible B.simple C.popular D.unnecessary
20.How does the writer tell us it is good to write things down?
A.By telling us an interesting story. B.By asking and answering questions.
C.By giving us a piece of advice. D.By showing the results of a study.
21.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Schools won’t teach students how to write by hand.
B.Writing things down can help us to remember.
C.Students need to take a computer to class in university.
D.It’s important for students to take notes on their computers.

DIY, which means Do It Yourself, is quite popular in the UK. Lots of stores and supermarkets sell DIY things. TV programmes show people how to DIY.
English people like DIY. There is a saying in the UK— “An Englishman’s home is his castle”. Huge numbers of people spend their holidays making their homes beautiful “castles”. If there is anything that needs fixing around their houses, such as painting the walls or putting in a new shower, they will do the jobs themselves. They share DIY experiences with their friends. More and more people have discovered the joy of DIY. Sometimes people also DIY for saving money. With the economic downturn at present, many people can not afford to buy a bigger house. They are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. It is not surprising that DIY is so popular.
DIY can be difficult. There is a huge market for DIY furniture which people need to put together themselves with a few basic tools. However, people often find it not easy to build a piece of furniture because they can’t understand the instructions. Sometimes the instructions are simple and clear, but the furniture itself is difficult to build. One thing is for sure, though most DIY projects are started with the best intentions, many of them may not get finished. DIY can also be dangerous. For example, anything electrical should be done by a professional worker. Unluckily, many people don’t care about this warning and put themselves in danger. It is reported that in just one year over 230,000 people were hurt while doing DIY in the UK, including 41,000 who fell off ladders.
Therefore, DIY can bring us fun and help us save money, but it is not always as easy as it is thought to be if we bite off more than we can chew. Maybe factories should make products that are easier and safer for us to DIY.
22.How do many English people spend their holidays according to the passage?
A.Making their homes beautiful. B.Visiting their friends.
C.Travelling all over the world. D.Making a lot of money.
23.Why do English people like DIY?
A.Many stores sell DIY things. B.DIY can bring them fun.
C.TV programmes teach them to DIY. D.All DIY projects are easy.
24.What can we learn from the passage?
A.DIY is a waste of money. B.It is always difficult to DIY.
C.We should be careful while doing DIY. D.It’s very safe for us to DIY.
25.In the passage, “we bite off more than we can chew” probably means ___________.
A.we can eat everything we like B.we should do something difficult
C.we do something that is too difficult D.we eat too much food that is not safe

DIY projects let you design your house, providing a way to save money, but even with step-by-step instructions, DIY doesn’t always go as planned. Nearly 80% of homeowners make a mistake while doing DIY. 26
Taking on Too Much
More than 40% of people find DIY projects more difficult and expensive than they thought. Bailey Carson, a home care expert, said, “ 27 It’s important to think about why you want to DIY, and what you hope to get out of it. Without the time, tools, and skills to do it correctly and safely, mistakes may cost you more than simply paying others to help.”
28
A third of people used the wrong tool for a DIY project. Many tools are designed for special uses and materials, so if you use them for other tasks, you may get hurt. Always use the proper tools for each project, and make sure you know how to use them.
Not Safety First
29 Of the people surveyed who once made a big mistake during their DIY projects, 47% said that the mistake led to serious problems; for example, 44% reported incidents such as starting a fire or falling off a roof or ladder. Take your time and follow all safety rules when using tools to protect yourself.
Skipping(跳过)Important Steps
Skipping a key step can end your whole DIY project. And you might not know it until much later. In the survey, 47% of people said that they had finished a DIY project before knowing it was done wrong. 30 And make sure you have the necessary(必要的)skills to complete each step.
A.Using the Wrong Tools
B.Not Attending DIY Lessons
C.You may need to think twice.
D.DIY mistakes can also be dangerous.

Gardening as part of the school curriculum (课程) began in the United States in the early 1900s and school gardening has become very popular during these years. Parents and teachers say these hands-on lessons can be used to teach many subjects.
Susan Hobart is a school teacher at Lake View Elementary School in Madison. She and her students look after the school’s large garden with 12 raised beds. “Gardening is a great way to get kids outside with a purpose. With the school gardens, kids can see a beginning, a middle and an end to their project. If they just sat at desks, they wouldn’t have this experience,” Hobart says. She adds that the gardens help calm the kids and give them a different viewpoint on soil and food.
“If we had to buy the seedlings, they’d cost $3 each and we could never afford that,” Hobart says. “But there are plenty of creative ways to find help. We find seeds and seedlings from local botanical gardens (植物园) and our communities.” Each spring, the school’s children plant seeds and seedlings in the garden. Over the summer, teachers and young children take care of the garden together.
Hobart says that gardens do not have to take up a large area outdoors. For schools without space for even a small garden, turning to local botanical gardens and parks can sometimes be a good choice.
In the school garden, teachers can teach students how to grow food and flowers. They can also teach science, social studies and even art there. “Giving kids the opportunity to move outside and find worms—especially if their teachers are excited about it— is important,” Hobart says.
“Having a garden in a school is just as important as any other education,” Hobart says. “The act of gardening teaches you where food comes from and teaches you to have a feeling of great respect for soil. If kids have a reverence (尊敬) for soil, it’s a life skill. I see this as one of the most valuable lessons of humanity.”
54.Where do the students at Lake View Elementary School find seeds and seedlings?
55.What can schools do without garden space?
56.What do you think of doing gardening in your school? Why?

【答案】18.A 19.C 20.D 21.B
