That little “a” with a circle running around it is found in email addresses, which is most commonly referred to as the “at” symbol. There are dozens of strange terms to describe the @ symbol. Many countries associate this symbol with either food or animal names.
Before it became the standard symbol for email, the @ symbol was used to represent the cost or weight of something. For instance, if you bought 6 apples, you might write it as 6 apples @ $1.10 each.
With the introduction of email came the popularity of the @ symbol. The @ symbol or the “at sign” separates a person’s online user name from his or her mail server address. For instance, joe@uselessknowledge.com. Its widespread use on the Internet made it necessary to put this symbol on keyboards.
The actual origin of the @ symbol remains unknown. History tells us the @ symbol came from the tired hands of the medieval monks (僧侣). During the Middle Ages before the invention of printing press, the monks that performed these copying duties looked for ways to reduce the number of words being repeated. Although the word “at” is quite short to begin with, it was a common enough word in texts that they thought it would be quicker and easier to shorten the word “at”. As a result, the monks looped (使绕成圈) the “t” around the “a”.
4. Which is true of the @ symbol?
A. It is only used to describe a pig. B. It is not widely used.
C. It was used as unit of measurement. D. It could be found in every language.
5. The copying performed by monks must have been _______.
A. easy B. less important C. tiring D. comfortable
6. Why has the symbol been put on keyboards?
A. Because it can be found in any language. B. Because it is widely used on the Internet.
C. Because it looks much cooler on keyboards. D. Because many tired monks ask them to do it.
7. The actual origin of the @ symbol _______.
A. still remains unknown B. can’t be known forever
C. came from the Internet D. came from the medieval monks’ tired hands

As AI art generators (生成器) take the world by storm, some people wonder if their works should count as art at all. The technology is still developing and has some wrinkles to iron out, which means there are indeed flaws to consider alongside the outstanding artwork artificial intelligence can produce.
Art is classed as the product of imagination, skill, experience, and emotion, usually meant to represent something for the public to enjoy. Artists spent time and effort putting their inner worlds onto these works. Machine intelligence also puts a lot of work into sorting through tons of data, linking someone’s prompt to data sets, and trying to represent it as best as possible. The difference is that AI is driven by commands instead of an emotional desire to express itself.
AI painters can produce over 1,000 original works of art with every tap on the Enter key on a keyboard. But a mass-produced print of the Mona Lisa is worth less than the actual Leonardo da Vinci’s painting. Why? Scarcity — there’s only one original. Should anyone pay for these things? And if an artist puts AI masterpieces up for sale, what should the price be?
AI art mostly relies on programs that employ mimicking (模仿) techniques to recreate the work of existing artists, based on human requests. But who made the artwork, the machine or its user? And can the original artists sue for a copyright (版权) violation? Such questions complicate the merging of artificial intelligence and the art industry while fueling arguments against recognizing AI-generated art as marketable artistic products.
Once we’ve answered those questions, we can tackle the really big one: When an AI-generated painting wins an award, who gets the prize?
8. What does the underlined phrase “take the world by storm” most probably mean?
A. become popular rapidly B. cause terrible storms worldwide
C. bring heavy economic losses D. destroy traditional art completely
9. According to Paragraph 2, what makes human art different from AI art?
A. Human art is created to satisfy public’s need for entertainment.
B. Human works reflect creators’ inner emotional world.
C. Human artists spend less time creating their artworks.
D. Human art depends on large amounts of data resources.
10. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. AI art works are sure to sell at a high price because of shortage.
B. It has been clear who should receive awards for AI art.
C. Many unsolved questions stand in the way of AI art entering the art market.
D. Original artists have already won many lawsuits against AI programs.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. AI art generators have completely replaced human artists.
B. Debates and puzzles are arising over AI-generated art.
C. AI-produced works are widely accepted as real art worldwide.
D. Copyright violation is the only problem of AI art.

In the modern era, technology has improved the way we monitor and protect endangered species. However, a recent study from the University of Cambridge highlights both the benefits and limitations of these technological advancements in wildlife conservation.
Traditional tracking endangered species methods were often limited by the size of the areas that needed to be monitored and the difficulty in accessing remote habitats. Today, satellite imagery, drones, and GPS collars have become the conservationist’s essential tools, providing real-time data on animal movements, population sizes, and habitat use:
“Technology has undoubtedly enhanced our ability to monitor endangered species,” said Dr. Emily Carter, lead author of the study. “But it’s not without its challenges.” The study, published in the journal Conservation Biology, compared data collected from traditional methods with that obtained through modern technology. Researchers found that while technological tools provided more extensive coverage and finer detail, they also introduced new prejudice. For instance, GPS collars are more likely to be employed on larger, more accessible animals, leaving smaller or more hidden species insufficient in the data.
Moreover, the study revealed that technological data often pay more attention towards certain regions. “We found that areas with better infrastructure and funding, such as North America and Europe, are overrepresented in the data,” Dr. Carter explained. “This creates a gap in our understanding of species in less-developed regions, which are often the most critical for conservation efforts.”
Despite these limitations, the study emphasizes the importance of integrating traditional and technological methods to create a more balanced and comprehensive dataset. “By combining the strengths of both approaches, we can reduce the prejudice and fill in the gaps,” said Dr. Carter. The researchers also highlighted how valuable public participation can be, Dr. Carter noted. “Encouraging more people to contribute observations, especially in underrepresented regions, can help balance the data and improve our conservation strategies.”
In conclusion, while technology has significantly advanced our ability to track and protect endangered species, it is not perfect. By combining traditional methods with modern technology and encouraging public participation, we can create a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of the world’s endangered species.
12. What is the central argument of the passage?
A. The use of GPS collars and drones has led to overprotection of large animal species.
B. Public participation is the most effective way to address data limitations in conservation.
C. Technology has revolutionized wildlife conservation and should replace traditional methods.
D. While technology offers advantages in tracking endangered species, it also introduces prejudice and regional gaps.
13. What are the shortcomings of modern technology in monitoring endangered animals according to the passage?
A. It often pay more attention on richer area.
B. It often focus on smaller or more hidden species.
C. It often has the difficulty in accessing remote habitats.
D. It is often limited by the size of the areas that needed to be monitored.
14. What is one suggested solution to balance data collection in underrepresented regions?
A. Reducing the use of traditional methods.
B. Focusing on satellite imagery and drones.
C. Encouraging public participation in observations.
D. Increasing funding for technology in developed countries.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards technological advancements in conservation?
A. Indifferent. B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Doubtful.

Cooking is one of the most pleasant and important human activities. However, preparing meals is more of a trouble now than a way to celebrate being alive. ___16___
Start with a plan, which you can find online. Choose whichever day of the week works best for your schedule to buy groceries, and use that as your starting point each week. Remember, it doesn't have to be Sunday or Monday. ___17___ Avoiding the two days will save you a great amount of time and gas money.
___18___ With this in mind, you'd better check what you have in the fridge and use those as a base to work around first to prevent them from going bad! Save your weekly grocery trips for fresh stuff like tomatoes, eggs, and other things that will go bad more quickly.
Make the most of money. Buy ingredients(原料) that can be used in many meals. ___19___ Plus, it’s kind of a fun puzzle to see how many ways you can use one ingredient. For example, I love Latin and Asian foods, so I keep things like rice, bell peppers, garlic, and hot sauce on hand at all times.
Cook with others. Who said you had to make all the preparations yourself? Get a group of friends to each make a different dish. You’ll try something new and get meal inspirations. The goal here is to make life easier. ___20___
A. Use fresh ingredients first.
B. Try to avoid wasting food.
C. The traffic is too heavy on the two days.
D. Buy items you often use in great amounts.
E. This will keep your taste satisfied and your wallet happy.

G. Thankfully, there are lots of small ways you can make cooking easier.

One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat dirty. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast.
We carefully began a conversation and spoke about a lot of things. We never introduced ourselves. I was concerned that he might have no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked,
“May I get you something?”
“A coffee would be nice.”
Then I bought him a cup of coffee. We talked more, and he accepted another cup of coflee. Finally, I rose to leave, wished him well, and headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked,
“How did you get to know Mr. Galbreath?”
“Who?”
“The man you were sitting with. He is chairman of the Board of Churchill Downs.”
I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast, and feeling pity for one of the world’s richest and most powerful men!
Paragraph l:
My few minutes with Mr. Galbreath changed my life.
