Pop Mart: The Mystery Behind Blind Boxes
In the past decade, Pop Mart has revolutionized toy collecting through its innovative blind box concept. These small, sealed packages containing random collectible figures have created a global craze, particularly among teenagers and young adults.
The Blind Box Phenomenon
Standard blind boxes are priced at ¥59-69 ( $8-10 ) in China, while international markets see higher prices—up to $15 in the US and £12 in the UK. Song Yingxing was a Chinese scientist and encyclopedist (百科全书编纂者) in the late Ming Dynasty. British scholar Joseph Needham praised him as “The Diderot of China”.
Born in Jiangxi Province in 1587, Song Yingxing took the senior imperial (科举) examinations six times but failed repeatedly. Finally, he abandoned official exams and turned to practical natural science.
Then Song Yingxing spent four years teaching his students in his hometown. Although it was a job like teaching, it was a very important stage in Song Yingxing’s life, because many of his works were written here. And he chose a secluded (隐居的) life and refused to serve as a government official, leading a poor life in his old age.
Song’s greatest masterpiece is Tian Gong Kai Wu, a technical encyclopedia of great value. As Needham has observed, the vast amount of accurately drawn illustrations in this encyclopedia dwarfed the amount provided in previous Chinese encyclopedias, making it a valuable written work in the history of Chinese literature. The book systematically summarizes ancient Chinese agricultural experience and technological achievements, covering almost all technical fields of the mid-Ming Dynasty.
Many production techniques recorded in it are still practical today. Meanwhile, Tian Gong Kai Wu broke from Chinese tradition by rarely referencing previous written work. It was instead written in a style strongly suggestive of personal experience. Translated into many foreign languages, the book gained great popularity in Europe and Japan.
4. What can we learn about Song Yingxing from the text?
A. He received a science education.
B. He dreamed to be a great scientist.
C. He adjusted the direction of life.
D. He passed imperial examinations.
5. Which of the following best describes Song’s teaching life?
A. Significant and rewarding. B. Busy but satisfactory.
C. Comfortable but worthless. D. Challenging and intolerant.
6. What’s the possible meaning of the underlined word “dwarfed”?
A. Apply something to practice. B. Make something seem smaller.
C. Provide evidence of something. D. Take advantage of something.
7. What is one of the features of Tian Gong Kai Wu?
A. It largely referenced previous encyclopedias.
B. It was written in multiple foreign languages.
C. It focused merely on agricultural technology.
D. It provided abundant first-hand experience.
C
Greenland sharks, the mysterious giants lying low in the deep, cold waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic, are known for their extraordinarily long life — some can live for over 400 years. Scientists have long wondered how these creatures manage to outlive all other vertebrates (脊椎动物). Through a series of studies, they desire to reveal the secrets behind their long life.
Lily Fogg, a biologist at the University of Basel in Switzerland, and her team focused on the sharks’ eyes. Examining tissue from ten Greenland sharks, including some up to 150 years old, they found that these animals possess all the necessary cellular structures for vision in the deep sea’s dim light. Surprisingly, the eye tissue showed little sign of aging. Fogg suggests this may be due to highly active DNA repair mechanisms that prevent cell death and tissue degeneration. A separate study of the sharks’ sets of genes also pointed to enhanced DNA repair functions.
However, not all organs benefit from such protection. Alessandro Cellerino, an Italian physiologist, led a study on the sharks’ hearts. Examining six Greenland sharks, his team discovered that their hearts accumulate tough scars and cellular damage over time. In humans, similar scarring would indicate cardiovascular disease, hardening the heart and reducing its pumping efficiency. Yet, despite this damage, the sharks’ hearts continue to function effectively. Researchers suspect that protective hormones may help their hearts stan up to some age-related injuries.
Catherine Macdonald, an ecologist at the University of Miami, finds these findings fascinating. She notes that any animal with such a long lifetime must possess both repair and maintenance abilities. While studying living Greenland sharks is difficult owing to their deep-sea habitat — they can dive to 2,200 meters, Macdonald believes that understanding their long life can offer valuable insights into human aging. However, she cautions against drawing quick conclusions on human health, emphasizing that these discoveries are just the beginning of a much longer scientific journey.
8. What is the scientists’ attitude to Greenland sharks’ long life?
A. Shocked. B. Curious. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
9. What can be inferred about Greenland sharks’ hearts?
A. They stop functioning at an old age. B. They age faster than their eyes.
C. They are free of age-related injuries. D. They can repair damage thoroughly.
10. What does Macdonald think of the findings?
A. They are difficult to understand. B. They lack corresponding evidence.
C. They offer conclusions on human health. D. They are invaluable for further study.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. How Greenland Sharks Resist Aging B. How Greenland Sharks Live in the Sea
C. How Greenland Sharks Get Genetic Protection D. How Greenland Sharks Keep Healthy for Long
D
Deep within the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, wonderful ancient murals (壁画) have whispered stories of faith for centuries. However, these national treasures face the constant threat of natural damage. Today, a new “guardian” has arrived to protect them: Artificial Intelligence (AI). Wang Wanfu, a senior researcher at the Dunhuang Academy, is leading this great change. To him, AI is a bridge connecting ancient art with modern science.
The protection begins with a close watch on the environment. Wang’s team uses AI to monitor temperature and humidity (湿度). While human eyes might overlook tiny changes, AI can study tens of thousands of high-definition photos to find the tiniest breaks. “The key is determining whether the worsening is active,” Wang explains. “If risks are found, we step in immediately with targeted techniques before the damage becomes irreplaceable, ensuring the best possible outcome for these precious relics (遗迹).”
The power of AI was evident during the repair of a “flying ribbon” from a Dunhuang painting. By studying various artistic styles across different dynasties, AI’s massive computing ability processed thousands of patterns and generated several repair options for the team. This task would have taken humans months or even years to complete. Then, scientists and art historians stepped in to select the most historically accurate plan. This human-machine partnership ensures that technology respects history. “Technology brings relics to life, but we must ensure they are passed down in their original forms,” says Wang.
Looking ahead, Wang highlights that conservation is becoming a cross-subject field, drawing on areas from microbiology to computer science. He is calling for more young talents to join the mission. “Whatever your background, if you’re passionate about heritage, there’s a place for you here,” he says. With AI’s assistance, Wang is confident that the glory of Dunhuang will continue to inspire the world, proving that the past can indeed have a bright future.
12. What is Wang Wanfu’s view of AI?
A. It replaces human staff. B. It restores cave structures.
C. It combines art and science. D. It has massive computing ability.
13. How does AI help in monitoring the murals?
A. By controlling temperature. B. By discovering potential risks.
C. By decreasing natural damage. D. By partly adjusting humidity levels.
14. What was the role of humans in the “flying ribbon” repair?
A. Providing repair options. B. Developing artistic styles.
C. Processing massive patterns. D. Choosing the best repair plan.
15. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To compare human and AI abilities in art repair.
B. To explain the historical value of Dunhuang murals.
C. To introduce a new method of preserving ancient art.
D. To showcase the advantage of AI over human experts.

I was an arrogant (傲慢的) high school boy full of blind self-confidence, firmly believing that I was more capable than all my classmates at managing group tasks. When our teacher formally announced that our school would hold a lively campus charity fair to raise money for poor children in remote villages, I volunteered without hesitation to take charge of the second-hand book stall. I also actively persuaded nearly ten warm-hearted classmates to donate their unused books to support my booth.
My thoughtful classmate Lina had kindly reminded me in advance to classify different kinds of books, mark clear and reasonable prices, and design simple promotional posters to attract visitors. However, I rudely turned down her sincere advice and even laughed openly at her for being overly cautious. I gathered large piles of various books, including interesting storybooks, popular magazines and practical exam reference books. Without any careful arrangement, I stuffed these mixed books randomly into several rough cardboard boxes.
On the official day of the charity fair, while other groups devoted plenty of time and energy to decorating their stalls with colorful ribbons and beautiful handwritten signs, I did almost no preparation at all. I just laid all my books in a total mess on the table and wandered around the campus casually, firmly convinced that high-quality books alone would naturally draw a large number of buyers.
As noon slowly rolled around, all the neighboring stalls were packed with busy and energetic students. In sharp contrast, almost no one stopped or spared a glance at my book booth. Worse still, several reference books accidentally slipped off the table and got badly stained by the fruit juice spilled by passing students.
Standing alone beside my cold booth, I watched Lina’s handmade toy stall become extremely popular and listened to their cheerful and merry laughter. Strong regret and great embarrassment wrapped me tightly. I fully realized that my stupid arrogance and laziness had wasted my classmates’ kind donations. Just as I sank into deep self-blame and despair, Lina finished her temporary work and walked straight towards me.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Seeing my depression, Lina didn’t mention my previous rudeness but proposed a plan.

When the charity fair drew to an end, our book stall unexpectedly topped the donation list.

【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. D

【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. C

【答案】Dear editor,
I’m writing to introduce my favourite singer, Taylor Swift. She is a famous American singer-songwriter who has won numerous music awards worldwide. Besides singing, she writes most of her songs on her own.
I admire her for two main reasons. For one thing, her songs are filled with genuine feelings and beautiful lines. Whenever I feel stressed from schoolwork, listening to her songs cheers me up. For another, she keeps trying new music styles and never gives up in the face of difficulties. Her behavior inspires me a lot.
I hope more students will enjoy her music.
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When the charity fair drew to an end, our book stall unexpectedly topped the donation list.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One Possible Version
Seeing my depression, Lina didn’t mention my previous rudeness but proposed a plan. Eager to make amends, I nodded gratefully and we set it in motion. Our forces joined, we split the messy pile into three categories: fairy tales, novels, and review materials. Lina set about creating eye-catching price tags with colorful pens, whereas I humbly borrowed long, elegant ribbons to decorate our table. Knowing students hunted for cheap books, we wiped the juice-stained copies clean and shouted warm promotions. Gradually, as a steady stream of curious buyers gathered, my face flushed with profound guilt for mocking her careful suggestions before.
When the charity fair drew to an end, our book stall unexpectedly topped the donation list. To our immense thrill, the collected cash far exceeded our expectations. The heavy donation box in my hands, I turned to Lina with red-rimmed eyes. Not only did I formally apologize for my unbearable arrogance, but I also thanked her for saving the day. She accepted it softly, a forgiving smile washing away my lingering guilt. Ultimately, this unforgettable experience engraved a priceless truth in my mind: true success is rooted in collaboration rather than blind pride. From then on, I swallowed my ego, always ready to embrace others’ valuable advice.
