It was thirty years ago. In my family we were two children, one employed adult, and Christmas was coming. My parents were managing, but only just, and they had started preparing us for a simpler Christmas.
So they told me, their 5-year-old daughter, well in advance that Santa Claus had received so many letters that winter that he had run out of presents. Santa is generous, they explained, but Santa is not bottomless. Everybody knew, of course, that Santa did not actually manufacture (大量生产) the gifts. He bought them, like anyone else.
For a 5-year-old, this was a disaster. But children often have an unnerving ability to solve problems before the adults around them notice. I went to my room, found old toys, and wrapped them carefully. One for my mother, one for my father, one for each of my grandparents, and some for myself and my brother. By the morning, I had become, in my own mind, the hero of Christmas. There would be presents under the tree. There would be the best part of Christmas, the opening. I had solved the first money problem of my life and brought joy to my family.
The ending was happier than I expected. Santa, it turned out, had found gifts for the young family after all. The old toys were quietly returned to my bedroom.
And yet, that Christmas has stayed with me my whole life. It is a memory about adapting to something a child has a hard time understanding. It is also a memory about something common, the kind of relative shortage and insecurity that exists in many families. That memory, and the dozens that followed, quietly built a way of thinking I never noticed I had. I came to believe that whether we had plenty of money or just about enough, we would manage, and our problems would be temporary.
24. Why did the author’s parents mention Santa Claus in advance?
A. To encourage her to share presents. B. To explain their financial difficulties.
C. To introduce how Santa Claus worked. D. To lower her expectations for Christmas.
25. What does the underlined word “unnerving” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Limited. B. Incredible. C. Insufficient. D. Trained.
26. Which of the following best describes the author as a kid?
A. Curious and patient. B. Honest and sensitive.
C. Creative and generous. D. Reliable and determined.
27. What influence did that Christmas memory have on the author?
A. It helped her accept family insecurity. B. It increased her love for Christmas gifts.
C. It taught her to avoid money-related troubles. D. It helped her form a positive view of hard times.

For decades, the value of a great sporting event has been measured in scale. Host cities compete to build the tallest cauldron (主火炬台), and the opening ceremony is where that rivalry peaks. So when the twentieth Asian Games opened in Nagoya on 19 September, the most striking feature was what the ceremony left out: no wall of lasers, no long celebrity programme, and a running time kept under two hours.
Most of that time went to the athletes themselves. Rather than filling the evening with spectacle (宏大场面), the organisers handed the stage to the parade of competitors and to the lighting of the cauldron, where a father and son who had both thrown the hammer carried the flame together.
The restraint was not limited to the clock. Medals were struck from recycled metal. Stage structures were built from materials that could be recovered and used again, and several venues were designed so that their parts could be taken down or rebuilt later. Even the torch refused to hide its workings: the design leaves the internal frame on show, a tribute to the region’s identity as a centre of manufacturing.
The flame had three sources — Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagoya — a reminder that this is the third time the country has hosted the Games. Over the following fortnight, some 11,000 competitors from 45 delegations take part in 469 events across 43 sports at 54 venues, with the first gold medals awarded on 20 September.
Why would a host city choose to do less? Money is part of the answer: the cost of staging a global event has risen faster than the appetite for paying for it, and recent hosts have found it harder to persuade taxpayers that the bill is worth meeting. Climate promises are another part — a city that has pledged to cut emissions cannot easily ignore the concrete, the flights and the temporary arenas that a spectacular ceremony demands. Audience fatigue plays a role too: viewers who have watched a thousand light shows may respond warmly to something plain.
Whether this points to a lasting change is a different question. A plainer ceremony costs less, but it also produces fewer images for broadcasters to sell, and host cities still expect visitors to arrive and spend. What Nagoya suggests is narrower and more useful: the question of how large such an event should be no longer has a single answer.
28. What is the most striking feature of the Nagoya Games?
A. Its opening ceremony lasts longer than usual.
B. It cut down construction costs dramatically.
C. Its opening ceremony chooses simplicity over spectacle.
D. It invites many celebrities to perform at the ceremony.
29. The word “restraint” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. a rule set by sports officials B. a shortage of money in the host city
C. the unwillingness of athletes to perform D. a deliberate decision to keep things modest
30. Which is one of the reasons for Nagoya to do less?
A. Audiences in Nagoya are tired of sports events.
B. Viewers have lost interest in grand opening ceremonies.
C. It strives to set a global example in climate action.
D. Expenses have grown faster than citizens’ willingness to cover them.
31. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Nagoya’s mode brings a lasting change.
B. Nagoya offers another reference for hosts.
C. Simpler ceremonies will become mainstream.
D. Plainer ceremonies will attract broadcasters and tourists.

Language is not merely a communication tool but something that shapes our thinking. The Sapir‑Whorf hypothesis holds that language structures influence our world view. If so, AI writing tools do more than assist writing — they affect our cognitive processes.
Research on AI language standardization shows a paradox(悖论). AI can help people learn languages, enlarge vocabulary and preserve endangered languages with cheap translation tools. However, mainstream AI systems often produce polished, plain global English, diluting the diversity of dialects and various expressions.
When these AI tools become the default(默认)choice, Western writing styles spread to other cultures. Algorithms tend to favour professional Western writing, smoothing out unique cultural metaphors. Poetic local proverbs turn into dull official statements, and indirect polite requests are changed into direct American-style orders. Gradually, it reshapes people’s ideas about social manners and interpersonal relationships.
AI brings a standardizing effect on collective creativity. As everyone draws inspiration from the same algorithm source, creative diversity declines. Innovation calls for cognitive diversity, including different ways to analyze problems and varied thinking patterns. Once AI removes such differences, we may lose the source of creative breakthroughs.
AI is a cognitive tool, which may cause dependency or help us explore new ideas. The result depends on human users rather than the tool itself. The risk lies in passively accepting its default outputs. If we treat AI as a partner for creative discussion instead of simply using its ready-made answers, we can keep our unique viewpoints. As the generation familiar with life before ChatGPT, we should teach young people that algorithms provide structure, yet it is humans that supply soul.
32. What does the underlined word “diluting” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Weakening. B. Emphasizing.
C. Enhancing. D. Maintaining.
33. How does the author demonstrate Western style’s influence on other cultures?
A. By predicting results. B. By exploring reasons.
C. By providing examples. D. By making comparisons.
34. What is an unavoidable result of using AI tools according to the author?
A. The loss of diversity.
B. The decline in human intelligence.
C. The boost in critical thinking.
D. The disappearance of human‑created works.
35. What is the author’s idea regarding using AI?
A. Avoiding employing AI tools. B. Acquiring AI skills effectively.
C. Integrating different AI tools. D. Being the master of AI tools.

Some cards would say something simple like, “We took a family walk after dinner tonight.” Others would say something important like, “____39____” As the cards were read, we would make comments like, “That was an amazing day.” After that evening, I continued writing on cards and on New Year’s Eve, we read them together.

Emma had always dreamed of becoming an engineer. But now, sitting in her room with her third failed math test in her hands, that dream seemed further away than ever. Tears streamed down her face as she stared at the red marks on the paper.
Her mother knocked softly and entered. “Emma, dinner is ready,” she said gently. Emma didn’t respond. Her mother sat on the edge of the bed. “I know you’re upset. But giving up is not who you are.”
“Maybe it should be,” Emma whispered. “Maybe I’m just not cut out for math.”
Her mother was quiet for a moment. Then she said, “When I was your age, I wanted to be a doctor. But I failed my biology exam twice. I was ready to quit. But my father-your grandfather-told me something I’ve never forgotten.”
Emma looked up, curiosity replacing some of the sadness in her eyes.
“He said, ‘Success is not about never falling. It’s about getting up every time you fall.’ So I kept trying. I found a tutor, studied twice as hard, and eventually passed. I didn’t become a doctor-I became a nurse, which I love-but I never regretted not giving up.”
Emma wiped her eyes. “But what if I try and still fail?”
“Then you try again,” her mother said firmly. “As long as you keep moving forward, you haven’t really failed.”
That night, Emma thought long and hard about her mother’s words.

M: Good evening, gentlemen and boys! Thank you for being here this evening. We’re here to congratulate the top achievers of this year. The boys here have worked hard in order to be a part of this ceremony. Recognition of achievement can make us push ourselves and reach our full potential. The prizewinners are a true representation of everything that we value here at Hampton School. I have every confidence that you young men will be precisely the kind of young people who will make a positive difference to the country and the world. Your success will be built on being true to yourself. You should recognize your problems and doubts as well as your positive qualities. I remember listening to an interview with Andy Murray, one of the top tennis players in the world. After he was defeated in the first round of a tournament by a much lower-ranked player, the media went crazy. However, Murray was straightforward and wise. “Nobody died here,” he said, “I only lost a tennis match, nothing more.” We are proud of our prizewinners today. They should be proud of themselves. But let’s be clear, if you link motivation to winning prizes in life, you set yourself up for disappointment. The greatest prize of all is that you can look yourself in the eye and say, “I tried.”

B
D 25. B 26. C 27. D

根据第一段“My parents were managing, but only just, and they had started preparing us for a simpler Christmas.(我的父母勉强维持生计,他们开始让我们做好过一个简朴圣诞节的心理准备)”以及第二段“So they told me, their 5-year-old daughter, well in advance that Santa Claus had received so many letters that winter that he had run out of presents.(于是他们提前告诉我这个五岁的女儿,那个冬天圣诞老人收到太多信件,礼物已经用光了)”可知,父母提前提起圣诞老人是为了降低孩子对圣诞节的期待。
根据第三段“But children often have an unnerving ability to solve problems before the adults around them notice.(但孩子常常拥有一种惊人的能力,能在身边大人察觉之前就想出解决办法)”以及后文小女孩自己找出旧玩具包装成礼物的举动可知,unnerving此处含义是令人吃惊的、不可思议的,和incredible同义。
根据第三段“I went to my room, found old toys, and wrapped them carefully. One for my mother, one for my father, one for each of my grandparents, and some for myself and my brother. By the morning, I had become, in my own mind, the hero of Christmas. There would be presents under the tree. There would be the best part of Christmas, the opening. I had solved the first money problem of my life and brought joy to my family.(我跑回自己房间,找出旧玩具,仔细地包好。一份给妈妈,一份给爸爸,爷爷奶奶每人一份,还有几份留给我自己和弟弟。到第二天早上,在我心里,我已经成了圣诞节的小英雄。树下会有礼物,还会有圣诞节最美好的环节——拆礼物。我解决了人生第一个缺钱难题,给家里带来了快乐)”可知,小时候的作者很有想法、愿意主动为家人付出,富有创造力且大方。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“That memory, and the dozens that followed, quietly built a way of thinking I never noticed I had. I came to believe that whether we had plenty of money or just about enough, we would manage, and our problems would be temporary.(那段记忆以及之后许多类似的经历,悄悄塑造了我不曾察觉的思维方式。我慢慢相信,无论我们家境宽裕还是勉强糊口,我们都能撑过去,困难只是暂时的)”可知,这段圣诞回忆帮助她形成了面对困境的积极心态。
C
C 29. D 30. D 31. B

根据第一段中的“So when the twentieth Asian Games opened in Nagoya on 19 September, the most striking feature was what the ceremony left out: no wall of lasers, no long celebrity programme, and a running time kept under two hours. (因此,当第20届亚运会于9月19日在名古屋开幕时,最引人注目的特点是开幕式省略了什么:没有激光墙,没有冗长的明星节目,而且时长控制在两小时以内。)”可知,名古屋亚运会开幕式选择了简约而非宏大场面。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Medals were struck from recycled metal. Stage structures were built from materials that could be recovered and used again, and several venues were designed so that their parts could be taken down or rebuilt later. (奖牌由回收金属制成。舞台结构由可回收再利用的材料搭建而成,一些场馆的设计使其部件日后可以被拆卸或重建。)”可知,提到的这些做法都是刻意选择简约克制、不铺张。故猜测restraint指的是有意保持低调、不铺张。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Money is part of the answer: the cost of staging a global event has risen faster than the appetite for paying for it, and recent hosts have found it harder to persuade taxpayers that the bill is worth meeting. (经费是部分答案:举办一项全球赛事的成本上涨速度超过了人们为之买单的意愿,最近的主办城市发现更难说服纳税人这笔账单值得支付。)”可知,名古屋选择“少做”的原因之一是支出增长速度超过了市民的承担意愿。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“What Nagoya suggests is narrower and more useful: the question of how large such an event should be no longer has a single answer. (名古屋所给出的启示范围更窄也更有用:这类赛事应该办多大这个问题不再有唯一答案。)”可知,作者认为名古屋为其他主办城市提供了另一种参考。
D
A 33. C 34. A 35. D

根据第二段“However, mainstream AI systems often produce polished, plain global English, diluting the diversity of dialects and various expressions.(然而,主流人工智能系统往往生成规范、平淡的通用英语,diluting方言和各类表达的多样性。)” 选项A(Weakening,削弱)符合语境。
根据第三段“Algorithms tend to favour professional Western writing, smoothing out unique cultural metaphors. Poetic local proverbs turn into dull official statements, and indirect polite requests are changed into direct American-style orders.(算法倾向于青睐西式专业写作,剔除独特的文化隐喻。富有诗意的本土谚语变成枯燥的官方表述,委婉礼貌的请求被改成美式直白的命令。)”可知,作者列举谚语、请求句式被改写的事例来证明西式写作风格对其他文化的影响。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“As everyone draws inspiration from the same algorithm source, creative diversity declines.(当所有人都从同一算法来源获取灵感时,创造多样性会下降。)”
根据第五段“If we treat AI as a partner for creative discussion instead of simply using its ready-made answers, we can keep our unique viewpoints. As the generation familiar with life before ChatGPT, we should teach young people that algorithms provide structure, yet it is humans that supply soul.(如果我们把人工智能当作创意探讨的伙伴,而不是直接使用现成答案,我们就能保留独特观点。作为经历过 ChatGPT 出现之前时代的一代人,我们应当告诉年轻人,算法提供框架,但赋予灵魂的是人类。)”可知,作者认为人类要做人工智能工具的掌控者。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Emma woke up with a new determination. She opened her math book to review her hardest chapters and made a study plan, reserving two hours daily for math practice. She turned to her teacher for after-class help and joined a study group with math-good classmates. When wanting to give up, she recalled her mother’s words that keeping moving means no real failure. Gradually, she mastered difficult knowledge. She no longer feared mistakes and used every error to learn.
A month later, Emma received another math test result. She unfolded it nervously and saw a B. Though not an A, the score showed her efforts worked. She rushed to tell her mother and got a warm hug. Emma came to know success lies in perseverance rather than perfection. Her dream of being an engineer still needed much work, yet she believed she could make it step by step through failures and small wins.
