A new study shows cats are smart little animals with great memories.
Scientists wanted to know how well cats can remember things, so they did an experiment with 50 friendly house cats of different ages. All of them loved tasty food.
The scientists put four bowls of the same type in a quiet room. Two bowls were full of the cats’ favourite snacks, and the other two were empty. Then the scientists let the cats into the room to eat. After they finished eating, the scientists took them out. Fifteen minutes later, the scientists changed all the bowls to clean, empty ones. When the cats went back, they spent much more time around the bowls that had food before! They smelt the bowls with their little noses and touched them with their paws (爪子).
This tells us cats can remember “what” and “where”. They seem to have good short-term memories. However, another study in 2006 showed something different: most cats couldn’t find hidden things after 30 seconds. The study opens the door to further research on how long cats’ memories can be.
21. Scientists did the experiment with 50 cats of the same age.
22. There were four bowls filled with snacks in the room at first
23. The scientists waited fifteen minutes before bringing the cats back to the room.

The small river behind my grandmother’s house was my childhood paradise (乐园). Every day after school, my friends and I would play by it. We loved watching small fish swim near the shore and listening to birds sing in the trees. The river smelled like wet earth and green grass — a smell I can still remember when I close my eyes.
One special memory shines brightest. On my tenth birthday, Grandpa taught me to fish using just a bamboo pole and some bread. The sun was warm on our backs as we waited quietly. When I caught my first fish, Grandpa smiled and said, “Good job!” That night, we let the fish go back into the water.
