Side hustles (副业) for college students deliver spending money while still offering the flexibility that a full class schedule requires.
Take class notes
Three sites — StudySoup, NexusNotes, and Stuvia — offer attractive pay for uploading and selling class notes to other students at your university. You usually get a bonus when someone signs up to get access to your notes, plus a payment for each set of notes that sell. You can earn $250 to $500 per class, per semester.
Become a tutor
Many younger students have fallen behind academically as they struggled with distance learning. That opens an opportunity for those who have mastered a subject, from high school algebra to Spanish, to teach that subject to others. A number of tutoring platforms allow you to sign up and tutor online or in person.
Some of the best: Wyzant, Varsity Tutors, and, for those who want to teach music, LessonFace.
Be a survey taker
The best option in this category is a site called Prolific. What makes this site better than most is that it asks you to answer qualifying questions — age, income, family status, etc. — in advance. Then, the site sends you only the surveys that you’re qualified to take.
Charge scooters
Big campuses are often littered with electric scooters (小型摩托车) and bikes that can be unlocked and ridden around campus. Riders can drop the scooters just about anywhere. So scooter companies enlist (征募) “chargers” to pick them up, charge them overnight and return them to a designated (指定的) area early the next morning.
If you have a late class, there are two benefits of signing up to charge. First, you earn between $5 and $20 for each scooter you return fully charged. You also get to ride the scooters home for free, which isn’t a bad way to get back to your dorm.
41. Which one best suits students who are excellent in music?

When 36-year-old Andy Duran decided to return to his favorite high school hobby — skateboarding, the only trouble he expected to have was his own ability to get back on the skateboard after such a long time. However, the 340-pound skateboarder soon realized that was the least of his problems.
Duran’s problems began even before he stepped on a skateboard. He couldn’t find anything for fat skaters. What Duran did find was the belief that plus-size people should not be skating. Determined to do something to change the image of plus-size people in sports, Duran set up Chub Rollz — a skating and skateboarding community for overweight skaters. He knew that not only did he need to get back into it to prove people wrong, but he needed to create a safe space where others could have representation as well.
To encourage plus-size people to take part in the fun sports, Duran created a list of recommended products for fat skaters. He also hosted roller skating and skateboarding classes to teach beginners.
After an article about his thoughts in the San Francisco Chronicle, Duran received lots of messages from strangers thanking him for giving them the courage to take up skateboarding. He has also been contacted by some skateboard brands offering to create larger clothing sizes and been offered free equipment by skating organizations like Skate Like a Girl.
Though encouraged, Duran believes a lot more needs to be done to get rid of body image stereotypes (刻板印象). “I want to see more changes in communities. Maybe skate shops create a more welcoming environment for all types of skaters. Or boards are made in a variety of strength and sizes. Everyone is making thinner, lighter products, but sometimes we need those heavy-duty choices to stay available,” he explains.
For those hesitant about taking up their desired activity due to their body size, Duran has this to say: “Be kind to yourself. Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean you can’t be it.”
44. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The skateboard. B. His hobby.
C. His ability. D. The time.
45. Which of the following is the main reason for Duran founding Chub Rollz?
A. He couldn’t find suitable skateboarding clothes and boards for fat skaters.
B. He wanted to encourage more people to take up skateboarding as a hobby.
C. He hoped to attract media attention to report his story.
D. He aimed to challenge the idea that plus-size people shouldn’t skate and give them a sense of belonging.
46. Which word can best describe Duran?
A. Generous and helpful. B. Inspiring and creative.
C. Adaptable and easy-going. D. Talented and considerate.
【答案】44. C 45. D 46. B

【导语】本文讲述了安迪重拾滑板爱好,发现大体重人群参与滑板存在困境,于是创办社群,打破身材刻板印象,鼓励更多人参与这项运动。
【44题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段首句“When 36-year-old Andy Duran decided to return to his favorite high school hobby — skateboarding, the only trouble he expected to have was his own ability to get back on the skateboard after such a long time. (36岁的安迪・杜兰决定重拾高中最爱的爱好——滑板。他原本预想唯一难题是时隔许久重返滑板的自身能力。)”可知,杜兰原本以为自己面临的唯一麻烦是太久没玩滑板后重新开始滑的“能力(ability)”。紧接着第二句“However, the 340-pound skateboarder soon realized that was the least of his problems. (然而这位340磅的滑板者很快意识到,____只是他最小的麻烦。)”发生转折,说明他很快意识到“那”反而是最不成问题的问题。因此,划线词“that”指代的是前文提到的“his ability”。
【45题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Determined to do something to change the image of plus-size people in sports, Duran set up Chub Rollz...He knew that not only did he need to get back into it to prove people wrong, but he needed to create a safe space where others could have representation as well. (他决心改变超重人群在运动中的形象,创办了Chub Rollz……他知道自己不仅需要重新投入其中来证明这种观点的错误,更需要创造一个安全的空间,让其他人也能获得应有的归属感和代表性。)”可知,他创办社群意在挑战固有观念,给这类人群归属感。
【46题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“After an article about his thoughts in the San Francisco Chronicle, Duran received lots of messages from strangers thanking him for giving them the courage to take up skateboarding. (《旧金山纪事报》刊登关于他想法的文章后,许多陌生人发来消息,感谢他给予自己尝试滑板的勇气。)”可知,他是鼓舞人心的。根据第三段“To encourage plus-size people to take part in the fun sports, Duran created a list of recommended products for fat skaters. He also hosted roller skating and skateboarding classes to teach beginners. (为鼓励大体重人群参与这项有趣的运动,杜兰整理了适合胖滑手的推荐装备清单,还开设轮滑、滑板课教授新手。)”可知,这些行动展现了他的创造力。

Community service, often defined as voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area, has been added to high school curricula(课程) worldwide.
One of the main reasons for adding community service to high school education is its obvious impact on personal growth and development. Through community service, students gain valuable life skills that traditional classroom instruction may not fully provide. Moreover, community service provides a real-world context for students to apply academic(学术的) knowledge. For example, a student interested in biology might volunteer at a local animal shelter or take part in conservation projects, gaining practical experience that enriches his/her understanding of classroom theories. Another important benefit of community service is that it helps high school students develop social responsibility and social awareness. By doing community service activities, students become more aware of societal issues. And they will realize the importance of contributing to the common good.
Despite its benefits, the introduction of community service to high school curricula is not without challenges. One common concern is that community service may add more stress to high school students who are already under a lot of pressure. Balancing academics, extracurricular activities and personal affairs can be hard, and community service might make them more tired and stressed.
Additionally, the quality and accessibility of community service opportunities can be different in different areas. Students in schools or communities with few resources may have fewer opportunities for meaningful service experiences. This actually widens the gap between students.
In conclusion, while community service in high school presents certain challenges, its benefits for personal growth and academic enrichment are clear. By adding community service to high school curricula, educators can equip students with essential life skills, develop their sense of public duty and increase their social awareness. Community service not only prepares students for future academic and professional plans but also shapes helpful citizens who are willing to make a positive difference to their communities.
47. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 2?
A. The benefits of community service.
B. The importance of learning life skills.
C. The advantages of gaining practical experiences.
D. The necessity of developing social responsibility.
48. What’s the concern about adding community service to high school education?
A. It leads to decrease in extracurricular activities.
B. It challenges traditional classroom instruction.
C. It increases students’ pressure.
D. It affects school work.
49. According to paragraph 4, what may lead to unfairness between students?
A. The different academic tasks. B. The unequal access to resources.
C. The lack of social awareness. D. The individual differences.
50. What does the author think of community service?
A. It takes up too much of students’ study time.
B. It should be promoted worldwide.
C. It aims to develop academic talents.
D. It has a positive influence on students.
【答案】47. A 48. C 49. B 50. D

【50题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章末尾段内容“In conclusion, while community service in high school presents certain challenges, its benefits for personal growth and academic enrichment are clear.(总之,尽管高中阶段的社区服务存在一些挑战,但其对个人成长和学业拓展带来的益处是显而易见的。)”可知,作者认为社区服务对学生有积极影响。

For many college students, the weekend is a time to relax, hang out with friends, or catch up on homework. However, some students are choosing to spend their weekends in different way: participating in the “Weekend Impact Program” (WIP). This program is open to students who want to help their communities while gaining valuable experiences.
WIP focuses on areas such as disaster relief, elder care, and cultural preservation. Participants may help rebuild homes after natural disasters, organize events for senior citizens, or work to protect historical landmarks in their local area. Each project is designed to address specific needs while giving students the opportunity to develop important life skills.
The goal of WIP is to inspire students to become more caring and engaged members of society. By participating in hands-on activities, they learn the value of teamwork, resilience, and cultural appreciation. According to recent surveys, 80% of WIP participants say the experience has helped them build confidence and find purpose in their studies.
Chris Lopez, a senior in college, shared his story: “I joined WIP to gain experience for my resume, but it turned into something much bigger. It showed me how even small efforts can create meaningful change. Now, I’m considering a career in non-profit work because of what I’ve learned.”

42. What can be inferred about Prolific?

Since its creation in 2005, WIP has expanded to over 50 campuses across the country, impacting countless communities and inspiring thousands of students every year.
