A
You be the judge: should my phone-addicted friend go on a mobile detox (戒断)?
The prosecution (控方): James
My housemate and best friend spends every waking minute on TikTok. I know she works in social media, but she’s now seriously addicted to it, even after she’s clocked off. Besides, she needs to stop playing videos loudly around the house when I'm watching TV.
The defense: Marley
My job means I have to be on the ball with what's trending online. I think James is jealous because he’s got a rather boring job in accounting. I don't go around playing videos at full volume all the time; I think that’s only happened a handful of times. He’s exaggerating there.
The jury (陪审团) of Guardian readers
While Marley’s use of TikTok may seem excessive to some, ultimately it is up to her how she chooses to use her time. If James can't accept that, he should move out.
Margo, 29
Marley needs to put her phone down, live in the moment and think less about her social media presence. She is guilty of not valuing an honest friend because she thinks a better life awaits her on TikTok.
Stewart, 35
As a fellow phone addict, I do have sympathy for Marley. However, it’s more than a little rude to have the sound turned on while watching TV together.
Peter, 40
The excessive use of social media is a crime and reflects poor control over social habits. Marley needs to be more considerate of others.

Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants, I was used to living in two worlds. But as I grew older, the Chinese side faded away. While I happily accepted the red envelopes during Lunar New Year and consumed mooncakes on the Mid-Autumn Festival, I didn’t feel connected to the culture.
Before my children were born, I had already decided that I would teach them Mandarin (普通话). I felt that they ought to be able to speak the language of their heritage.
Parenting books advised describing your actions while playing with your children, so I started digging out the long-buried words during every activity: “ball”, “eat”, “sleep”, “play”. However, as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more and more obvious. Luckily, the ready availability of Chinese language media — from books to television shows to music — made things much easier. As they grew older, I took them to the local library where the tale of the Monkey King and the legend of Chang’e immediately caught their imagination.
When I see my son converse with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent.
Last fall, my youngest son recited Li Bai’s “Quiet Night Thoughts” for the Moon Festival performance at his preschool. His voice rang out with confidence and his arms swept up to indicate the moon above. Joy and wonder lit up my father’s face as he listened to the familiar verses from the mouth of his grandson.
Decades ago, my Chinese teacher explained to me how the moon connects all those who seek its light, no matter how far apart they are. So, too, does language. It influences culture and history, and connects future generations to past ones.

Scott Cooper is a 66-year-old Australian with dementia(痴呆). Every day, he struggles with forgetting where he puts his keys and sometimes he can’t even recognize the faces of his dearest friends. But he refuses to let this tough condition stop him from exploring the world! He and his wife Jill, take regular trips—twice a year. “Traveling helps me keep enjoying life,” Scott said. “Although it can be tiring sometimes, these new experiences make my mind and body active.”
Scientists predict that by 2050, around 153 million people globally will suffer from dementia. However, a recent study interviewing over a hundred dementia patients in China reveals that travel can significantly benefit these patients. The new sights, smells, tastes, and social interactions during travel offer crucial cognitive and sensory stimulation.
According to Jun Wen, a tourism lecturer at Edith Cowan University and researcher, the expectation and planning in tourism stimulate brain function. Meanwhile, the exercise often aligns with dementia treatment plans. Warren Harding, a dementia care professor, adds that travel helps patients build confidence, trigger memories, and gain independence, serving as a valuable addition to non-drug treatments by offering emotional and social benefits.
Around the world, countries are introducing creative programs to make travel more accessible for people with dementia. In Western Australia, over 20 venues host “memory café’’ events, where patients socialize over morning tea. Near Melbourne, Australia’s first dementia-friendly sensory path winds through a forest.
These diverse efforts collectively represent a growing global trend. By focusing on the unique needs of dementia patients, these actions not only enhance the travel experience for this community but also set an example for more friendly and caring tourism worldwide. In the years to come, aged care experts hope people like Scott and Jill Cooper can holiday with greater ease, creating memories from travel, no matter how long they last.

A. To promote his way of life.
B. To show his passion for travel.
C. To reflect his tough condition with dementia.
D. To reveal a potential treatment for dementia.
29. What might benefit patients with dementia during travel according to the study?
A. Keeping travel diaries. B. Chatting with locals.

30. What do the underlined words “aligns with” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Agrees with. B. Conflicts with.
C. Breaks with. D. Ends with.
31. What can we know about the dementia-friendly travel programs?
A. They make it accessible to travel in Australia.

Most people believe young people live happier lives. Yet worldwide surveys from 149 countries show a surprising result: the old usually feel happier than young and middle‑aged grown‑ups. This unexpected discovery encouraged plenty of studies. One important reference is Jonathan Rauch’s 2018 book The Happiness Curve (曲线). Its data show happiness forms a U‑shape: people aged 20‑34 feel pretty happy; their sense of joy falls sharply during middle age. Then happiness rises slowly from age 51 to the mid‑80s, and finally becomes higher than that of young adults.
Psychologists separate happiness into two parts of “subjective well‑being”. The first is short‑term happiness, including sudden joy and good feelings. The second is life satisfaction, which means you feel your life is valuable and you have clear life goals. A 2022 research project by Karwetsky examined both kinds of happiness. It interviewed 1,597 healthy German people from 10 to 99 years old. Researchers divided these people into four age groups. The participants gave marks (from 0 to 100) for their real‑time joy and overall life satisfaction, and talked about what they cared about most in life. Researchers also studied other influences such as health, partners, grandchildren and religious ideas.
The key findings: only life satisfaction increases as people get older. Unlike young people, the old do not need quick pleasant feelings to feel satisfied with their lives. Having a partner, grandchildren and religious beliefs improves life satisfaction for people of all ages. Pressure from money problems lowers satisfaction, especially for those aged 50-69. Poor health reduces short‑term happiness, but it does little harm to the old’s life satisfaction. The study proves the U‑shaped happiness pattern.
Researchers also put forward three practical ways to achieve long‑term happiness: keep close personal connections; save enough money for later life; and live a meaningful life. In short, people become more satisfied with life as they age, even when they meet difficulties.
32. What does Jonathan Rauch agree with about happiness?
A. It keeps going up all the way.
B. It follows a U-shaped pattern.
C. It keeps dropping as people grow older.
D. It reaches its highest point in middle age.
33. What is the main purpose of Karwetsky’s research?
A. To examine the two kinds of happiness.
B. To explain the U-shaped happiness curve.
C. To prove the existence of two kinds of happiness.
D. To further explore the survey result on happiness.
34. Which age group suffers most from money pressure?
A. Those aged 20 to 34. B. Those aged 35 to 49.
C. Those aged 50 to 69. D. Those in the mid-80s.
35. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The U-shaped Curve of Happiness. B. The Two Kinds of Personal Happiness.
C. The Key Factors Destroying Happiness. D. The Practical Ways of Solving Troubles.

If you ask people how today’s children are doing, you will likely get an earful of complaints and concerns. Many believe that children today are less resilient, less empathetic, and less mentally healthy than previous generations. Headlines frequently warn of a youth crisis, and many parents quietly worry about the future. 36
Studies suggest that young people today are, in many ways, doing better than those of previous generations. Their basic literacy (素养) and curiosity have improved. They are more empathetic, more open-minded and inclusive than those 50 years ago. 37 Konrath and her colleagues surveyed nearly 700 adolescents and found that 73% had volunteered or donated to charities.
38 Many factors are probably at play, but experts believe that changes in parenting and educational styles could be an important driver. One significant change in parenting is a greater focus on emotional literacy. “Over the past 15 years of clinical work, many young children have come in with a richer emotional vocabulary than those I saw earlier in my career,” says Tracy, a clinical psychologist. Meanwhile, more schools have introduced social and emotional learning programs that encourage empathy and self-control.
What about the role of social media? It is often blamed for damaging young people. Even experts support banning smartphones in schools. 39 Some studies, however, find that technology may be helping kids connect with others, find support, and learn about world issues. “It can make them more thoughtful, conscious citizens,” Konrath says.
So why does the negative view of young people remain so common? One reason is that our minds are built to notice threats. Our ancestors who noticed danger were more likely to survive, which may explain why negative information attracts more attention than positive news. Cognitive (认知的) biases also make people remember the past as better than it actually was. 40 Today’s young people are, on the whole, doing quite well.
A. The big question is why.
B. They are more willing to offer help, too.
C. Yet the recent research tells a different story.
D. There is no doubt that social media poses risks.
E. Older generations were clearly happier and healthier.
F. They fear their children may struggle to find decent jobs.
G. Whatever the reason, the negative view rarely matches reality.

My visit to an art museum is an unforgettable experience. 56 (house) in an old railway building, Musée d’Orsay, the world-famous art museum, features some of the best-known paintings from the Impressionist movement of the 19th century. This was the first time that I 57 (lay) eyes on real paintings. The artists who impressed me most were two of the greatest Impressionist painters, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
Monet was 58 (great) inspired by nature, especially his garden. Monet liked to study the simple scene like the water lily pond, thus 59 (bring) the pond’s beauty to the canvas in a unique way every time. Renoir, 60 masterpiece Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette shows life in a busy neighbourhood of Paris on a Sunday afternoon, preferred to paint scenes of everyday life. Seeing it up close, I 61 (strike) by the small areas of light across the painting, and the way the soft edges of the figures seemed to mix together.
While their paintings had very different 62 (setting), the two painters were trying to break free from traditional artistic restrictions. They both sought 63 (liberate) from the rules of the old style. What Impressionist artists painted was just a brief “impression” they had at that moment rather 64 every detail in a scene. Impressionism has had 65 lasting influence on modern art.
