Miss England, Jessica Gagen, is not your ordinary beauty winner. She just added an impressive title, a rocket scientist, to her career.
The 27-year-old just graduated from the University of Liverpool with a degree in Aerospace Engineering and she has set her sights on becoming an astronaut (宇航员).
But winning her title just a few months before completing her degree was no easy task for the energetic redhead from Kelmersdale. She is the first red-headed woman — and the first rocket scientist — to be crowned (加冕) Miss England.
Gagen was able to manage both her competition and her schoolwork but the stress of doing both left her with chest pains and sleeplessness. However, she didn’t give up, just as she had been treated badly and always been made fun of as a child for having red hair.
“It was a tough five-year journey to get to this point, and I faced challenges before I even began,” Gagen said. “I think it’s important that today’s youth know that sometimes things don’t go entirely to plan, and that’s perfectly okay.”
Before starting at the university, Gagen studied a foundation year in physics while working on weekends because she didn’t have all the courses she needed for the program. She began studying at the university in 2019 and when the pandemic (流行病) hit, all the course work went online. She did this while working full time at night.
During the course of her studies, Gagen saw that there were very few females in STEM and decided to make it her task to promote (提升) careers in STEM for women and girls on her social media.
In the first year, she won Miss Lancashire and placed second in the national contest but she really wanted to win to promote her task. “There’s a lot of work that goes into becoming Miss England, and I really wanted to win because I knew I could use the platform to get more girls into engineering,” she said.
4. What is special about Miss England mentioned in the text?
A. She is also a scientist. B. She was once an astronaut.
C. She had a happy childhood. D. She has great pressure at present.
5. Why was Gagen laughed at when she was young?
A. She had trouble with her study. B. She was in poor health.
C. The color of her hair was unusual. D. Her clothes were not beautiful.
6. What do we know about Gagen from paragraph 6?
A. Her lifestyle in high school. B. Some of her college education.
C. Her attitude to her classmates. D. The support from her family.
7. What is Gagen’s purpose in winning Miss England?
A. To continue her college education.
B. To realize her dream since childhood.
C. To get confidence to deal with difficulties.
D. To encourage more girls to learn STEM.
A 5. C 6. B 7. D

Do you want a better memory (记忆力)? If there were an app on your phone that could improve your memory, would you try it? After all, our memory can be easily damaged by diseases, injuries, bad mental health conditions and, most particularly for all of us, aging.
Nowadays, there are a large number of apps that provide memory training. Can they help you remember to take medicine, do better on a school exam, remember the name of the person whom you met yesterday? Some scientists question whether this is possible. Undoubtedly, many of the brain training companies today boast the benefits of using their apps.
Scientists have provided proof that brain training does not benefit everyone in the same way. It is suggested that little consideration has been given to who would benefit most from those brain training apps. Will they only be those who have some forms of memory impairment (缺陷), or those eager for self-improvement even though they are already functioning very well?
To overcome these limitations, our team has started a new study aiming to find 30,000 volunteers to help us decide which form of training may be the best for individuals. Our goal is to avoid a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead of focusing on the simple question of whether brain training works, we are considering covering the whole population in a new challenge to test for whom brain training works, and under which conditions.
8. What damages our memory the most according to paragraph 1?
A. Growing old. B. Being sick.
C. Getting injured. D. Suffering from mental problems.
9. What does the underlined word “boast” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Describe. B. Show. C. Self-praise. D. Recommend.
10. What’s the scientists’ attitude toward the memory training apps?
A. Uncaring. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Supportive.
11. Why does the author’s team do the study?
A. To see if brain training works.
B. To prove one-size-fits-all is best.
C. To explain why apps fail for some people.
D. To find the best training for different people.
A 9. C 10. B 11. D
根据第一段“After all, our memory can be easily damaged by diseases, injuries, bad mental health conditions and, most particularly for all of us, aging. (毕竟,我们的记忆力很容易被疾病、伤害、不良心理健康状况所损害,而对我们所有人来说,最特别的是衰老)”可知,衰老对记忆力的损害最为显著。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“Undoubtedly, many of the brain training companies today boast the benefits of using their apps. (毫无疑问,如今许多大脑训练公司都boast使用其应用程序的好处)”可知,公司对自家产品的好处进行宣传、吹嘘,boast在此处意为“自夸、吹嘘”,与Self-praise意思相近。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Scientists have provided proof that brain training does not benefit everyone in the same way. It is suggested that little consideration has been given to who would benefit most from those brain training apps. (科学家已经提供了证据,证明大脑训练并非对每个人都有同样的益处。有人认为,很少有人考虑过谁最能从这些大脑训练应用程序中获益)”可知,科学家认为大脑训练应用并非对所有人都有效,态度是消极的、否定的。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“To overcome these limitations, our team has started a new study aiming to find 30,000 volunteers to help us decide which form of training may be the best for individuals. Our goal is to avoid a one-size-fits-all approach. (为了克服这些局限性,我们的团队已经开始了一项新研究,旨在找到30000名志愿者,帮助我们确定哪种训练形式可能最适合个人。我们的目标是避免一刀切的方法)”可知,作者团队做这项研究是为了找到适合不同人的最佳训练方式。
D
Libraries around the world still keep old books hundreds of years old. But will we be able to read today’s digital (数字的) books in hundreds of years? Librarians are worried. Even now, we can’t open some files (文件) from 20 or 25 years ago. Will our digital works be lost in a digital black hole? Will we face the loss of valuable information?
Technology is changing fast. Old ways of keeping information are gone now, or they are no longer supported by new technology. For example, many people used floppy discs (软盘) to save files years ago, but today few machines can open them. Also, millions of songs and music pieces were saved on tapes or CDs, but now most old music players no longer work. Another problem is that websites often change or close down, and all the information on them can fall into the digital black hole.
Books, however, are quite easy to keep. We don’t need special tools or technology to read them. If you keep them in a dry and safe place, they will stay safe for a long time. Li Shizhen’s great medical book Ben Cao Gang Mu came out in 1593. Amazingly, three copies from the first printing still survive today. That’s not bad for a book more than 400 years old.
Today, to some researchers, printed books remain a safe way to keep information. In 2014, a professional group began to raise money to print a famous online encyclopedia into 1,000 books. This would make sure that even if digital technology fails, the knowledge can still be kept.
For now, when it comes to storing information, printed copies seem to be the safest choice. However, future technology might develop and provide new ways to solve the problem of the digital black hole. Time will tell.
12. What happens if our digital works fall into a digital black hole?
A. They are carefully kept. B. They cannot be understood.
C. They cannot be read or reached. D. They are saved in a wrong place.
13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How music players are developing. B. How technology is changing over time.
C. Why old machines are no longer used today. D. Why technology may cause information loss.
14. Why does the writer mention Ben Cao Gang Mu?
A. To discuss why this book is still important. B. To show printed books can last for a long time.
C. To describe the great value of the book. D. To tell when the earliest printed book came out.
15. What would the writer most probably agree with?
A. Libraries should keep more digital books.
B. Digital books are less valuable than printed ones.
C. Technology will soon solve the problem of the digital black hole.
D. Technology is still looking for better ways to keep information.
C 13. D 14. B 15. D
根据第一段“Even now, we can’t open some files (文件) from 20 or 25 years ago. Will our digital works be lost in a digital black hole?(甚至现在,我们仍无法打开20或25年前的一些文件。我们的数字作品会陷入数字黑洞而消失吗?)”以及第二段“Also, millions of songs and music pieces were saved on tapes or CDs, but now most old music players no longer work. Another problem is that websites often change or close down, and all the information on them can fall into the digital black hole.(此外,数百万首歌曲和乐曲曾被保存在磁带或光盘上,但现在大多数老式音乐播放器已无法使用。另一个问题是,网站经常更改或关闭,所有存储的信息都可能落入数字黑洞之中)”可知,掉入“数字黑洞”意味着数字作品将丢失,从而无法被阅读或获取。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Technology is changing fast. Old ways of keeping information are gone now, or they are no longer supported by new technology. For example, many people used floppy discs (软盘) to save files years ago, but today few machines can open them. Also, millions of songs and music pieces were saved on tapes or CDs, but now most old music players no longer work. Another problem is that websites often change or close down, and all the information on them can fall into the digital black hole.(科技发展迅速,过去保存信息的方式已经消失,或不再受新技术支持。例如,很多年前人们用软盘来存储文件,但如今几乎没有任何机器能打开它们。此外,数百万首歌曲和音乐作品曾保存在磁带或CD上,但现在大多数老式播放器已无法使用。另一个问题是,网站经常更改或关闭,其上的所有信息可能最终落入数字黑洞之中)”可知,第二段主要讲了技术可能导致信息丢失的原因。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Books, however, are quite easy to keep. We don’t need special tools or technology to read them. If you keep them in a dry and safe place, they will stay safe for a long time. Li Shizhen’s great medical book Ben Cao Gang Mu came out in 1593. Amazingly, three copies from the first printing still survive today. That’s not bad for a book more than 400 years old.(然而,书的保存却相当简单。我们不需要特殊的工具或技术来阅读它们。只要将书放在干燥且安全的地方,它们就能长久保存。李时珍的医学巨著《本草纲目》于1593年出版。令人惊讶的是,首版印刷的三份副本至今仍完好保存。对于一本已有400多年历史的书籍来说,这已相当不错了)”可知,作者举此例是为了论证前文的观点,即纸质书可以保存很长的时间。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“For now, when it comes to storing information, printed copies seem to be the safest choice. However, future technology might develop and provide new ways to solve the problem of the digital black hole. Time will tell.(目前,在存储信息方面,纸质文件似乎是最安全的选择。然而,未来技术可能会发展出新的方法来解决数字黑洞的问题。时间会给出答案)”可知,目前纸质书仍是最安全的选择,但未来技术可能会提供新方法,这表明人们和技术仍在寻找更好的信息保存方式。
