Most people can’t live to 100. Those who do live so long can hardly walk, let alone take part in any activities. A few people, however, take part in dangerous activities even though they are more than 100 years old—They keep going and going! There is a great grandmother who likes challenging herself although she is 101 years old this year.
Mary Hardison believes that people should always be cheerful and more importantly, take on all kinds of adventures while they physically still can. So, instead of celebrating her 101st birthday with a boring party, she decided to go paragliding (滑翔跳伞)—an idea she got from her 75-year-old son who recently took it up as a hobby.
So on her birthday, cheered on by her big family, she tied herself up together with expert instructor Kevin Hintze, and jumped down fearlessly from the sky near her home in Ogden, Utah. And, it was not just a simple jump either. According to Kevin Hintze, the grandmother encouraged him to turn around, as they made their way down.
This is not the first time that Mary has done something “wild” and “crazy”. For her 90th birthday she rode all the adult rides at Disneyland. And, she is not done yet. For her 102nd birthday she hopes to go down the 3000 feet Alpine Slide at Utah’s Park City Mountain Resort!
Not surprisingly, this great action has made Mary Hardison very famous and also earned her a place in the Guinness World Records where she broke a 2007 record set by a 100-year-old British woman. What an amazing lady!
4. What do we know about Mary Hardison?
A. She took up paragliding as her hobby at the age of 75.

C. She was recorded in the Guinness World Records in 2007.

A. A 100-year-old British woman. B. Kevin Hintze.
C. Her grandson. D. Her 75-year-old son.
6. How does the author feel about Mary’s action?
A. Amazed. B. Unconcerned. C. Doubtful. D. Worried.
7. The text is likely to appear in ________.
A. a news report B. an advertisement
C. a novel D. a science report

Heman Bekele has been named TIME’s Kid of the Year for 2024. The 15-year-old has come up with an idea for a soap that could help treat skin cancer, and he is already working with scientists to test his idea.
Heman’s family came to the US from Ethiopia when he was-four. Heman remembers seeing people there working outside in the sun without proper sun protection, which may well increase the risk of skin cancer. From his parent’s, he had a deeper understanding of its dangers. Skin cancer can often be cured, but the treatment is extremely expensive for those poor workers.
Heman’s natural curiosity led him to experiment with different materials and at the age of 7, he nearly caused a fire with a chemistry set. As he got older, he began to wonder if his curiosity could actually help make a difference. Upon reading about imiquimod, a medicine that can help fight skin cancer in the early stages, he realized it was a good way to make the medicine work through a simple bar of soap.
But Heman knew that simply mixing imiquimod with soap wouldn’t work, as it would just wash away. Instead, he thought of creating a soap that contained the medicine inside super tiny “nanoparticles” (纳米颗粒) to make sure it remains on the skin after the soap washed off, allowing imiquimod to take effect.
Last year, when he was 14, Heman created a video explaining his idea, and won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. He is now working with scientists at Johns Hopkins University, running tests to see if the soap helps mice with skin cancer.
Heman knows that it will take a long time and a lot of effort to develop his soap, but he’s excited about the work. He also encourages other young people to contribute. “Just keep inventing and thinking of new ways to improve our world and make it a better place,” Heman says.
8. What drove Heman Bekele to create the soap?
A. His curiosity about skin cancer.
B. His desire to develop a new medicine.
C. His concern for unprotected workers outdoors.
D. His family’s history of skin cancer.
9. Why does Heman use nanoparticles in his soap?
A. To make imiquimod affordable B. To help imiquimod stay on the skin.
C. To make imiquimod easier to use. D. To help imiquimod spread faster.
10. Which of the following best describes Heman according to the text?
A. Curious and creative. B. Focused and honest.
C. Understanding and modest. D. Efficient and generous.
11. What can be the suitable title of the passage?
A. Fight against skin cancer. B. Be a gifted teenager.
C. Meet a young scientist. D. Follow a medical career.
D
Have you ever heard the expression “crocodile tears”? The expression reminds us of an amazing animal — The crocodile!
First, why are they amazing? Well, crocodiles are experts at survival. Scientists say they first appeared 200 million years ago and have outlived the dinosaurs by some 65 million years. One reason they are such good survivors is that they can go for a very long time without eating. And they are expert hunters! They use their strong jaws to bite their prey (猎物) and then they swallow their food whole. Here’s another fun fact about crocodiles: When they lose a tooth, they grow one right back. A crocodile can go through 8,000 teeth in one lifetime!
Okay, while these facts are fascinating, they really do not help to explain today’s expression: crocodile tears. Simply put, “crocodile tears” are fake sadness. You pretend to cry and feel badly for something when in fact you could not care less. A great word to describe crocodile tears is insincere.
But why do tears from an ancient, unfeeling reptile (爬行动物) mean false sadness? Well, the expression “crocodile tears” comes from an old myth that crocodiles would shed tears while eating their prey. Writers on the website Crocodilian.com claim that this myth was in use by the 1200s. A religious worker from that time wrote that if a crocodile found a man by the water, it would kill him if it could. Then the crocodile would cry tears on the man, but then finally swallow him.
Another myth about crocodile tears suggests the animals are very crafty indeed. Crocodiles, the story goes, would shed tears as a false show of guilt or grief to trick their prey. The prey would come closer and then become dinner.
So, that is the origin of the phrase “crocodile tears”. But, please note. You do not have to have actual tears flowing down your face to have “crocodile tears.” If you fake sadness or regret by using only words, others can still accuse you of having “crocodile tears.” Sometimes, crocodile tears are worse than insincere. Sometimes they are also hypocritical. Those are the times you are showing sadness but actually in your heart, you are quite happy about the situation.
12. What can best explain why crocodiles are good survivors?
A. They remain alive without food for a long time.
B. They outlived the dinosaurs by 65 million years.
C. They have strong jaws and teeth to bite the prey.
D. They pretend to shed tears before swallowing a prey.
13. What does the underlined sentence in Para3 mean?
A. You do care as much as before. B. You don’t care it at all.
C. You care more than anyone else. D. You care no less than others.
14. According to the second myth, why would crocodiles shed tears?
A. To show sympathy for the prey. B. To attract the prey’s attention.
C. To feel guilty for the dying prey. D. To cheat the prey to get closer.
15. In which of the following situations can you find the employment of “crocodile tears”?
A. You are jealous of your coworker’s quick promotion.
B. You feel sad for your friend’s being seriously ill.
C. You feel sorry for your competitor’s failure in a match.
D. You are sad because your application was rejected.

【答案】Dear David,
Hearing that our school has set up a new reading club to encourage good reading habits, I’m writing to recommend you to join it.
The club holds various activities regularly, such as book sharing meetings and reading discussions. Members can exchange ideas about books they love. Besides, some lectures on literature will also be held.
I think it suits you perfectly. You are fond of reading and good at communicating. The club offers a great chance to enjoy reading and make more friends.
Hope you can consider my recommendation.
Yours,
Li Hua
