Unlike many surfers who sought the perfect wave, my interests always lay beneath the sea’s surface in a world I could only imagine and dream of. When I was twelve, I made my first adventures in the deep. Later I would learn how to dive, expanding my world of exploration many times over.
Perhaps the greatest turning point in my life came when I was in high school and I wrote a letter to the famous Scripps Oceanographic Institution, asking how I might learn more about the sea. A kind scientist answered my letter and told me how to apply to Scripps for a summer scholarship, which I received. During one of their courses that summer, I met Dr. Robert Norris, a marine geologist. He loved the sea almost as much as I did. Soon he suggested I consider his school, the University of California, for my study. One year later I became a member of the freshman class.
Now my love affair with the sea became a serious endeavor. If I wanted to be an undersea explorer, I needed to learn as much as I could about the laws of the physical world that controlled the environment I wanted to enter. The undersea world is not our natural world. It is unforgiving to those who make mistakes. At its greatest depths the water temperature is near freezing, the pressure is eight tons per square inch, and it is totally dark. It is easy to get lost in such a world. I needed to learn a lot about geography, navigation, geology, biology, and many other things.
I decided another important thing for me to do was to join the U.S. Navy. If I was going to be an undersea explorer, I would have to lead men and women on dangerous adventures where they might get hurt, and I didn’t want that to happen.
In the Navy I learned discipline, organization, and how to motivate and lead people on adventures so that we could explore the wonders of the deep.
Finally, the time came to put all that I had learned to use, to go forth with a team of men and women and explore an adventure I am still on and hope to be on for many years to come.
14. What happened to the author at the age of twelve?
A. He dreamed about undersea exploration.
B. He began to swim under the deep water.
C. He surfed on big waves for the first time.
D. He learned to dive off the cliffs.
15. In college, the author took many different types of courses because he ________.
A. was told it was easy to get lost in exploration
B. was advised to take them by Dr. Robert Norris
C. thought they were needed to fully understand the ocean
D. believed it would help him succeed in the Navy
16. The author joined the Navy to ________.
A. develop his leadership skills
B. get along with people under stress
C. learn about the dangers of the ocean
D. gather specific information about ocean life
17. Which word can best describe the author?
A. Imaginative. B. Optimistic. C. Independent. D. Ambitious.
【答案】14. B 15. C 16. A 17. D

C
If you could work from any location in the world, where would you go? Picture filling in a spreadsheet on a sandy Caribbean island, or maybe a little rooftop cafe in Rome where you can sip great coffee while editing a social media video. More and more countries are offering digital nomad (游民) visas and therefore the chance to work remotely, from wherever you’d like to.
This trend is growing, with a new report indicating 11% of US workers identifying as digital nomads, a figure projected to rise by over 20 million in five years. Initially, digital nomads were mostly freelancers like social media managers or software developers, but now even traditional professionals like accountants and lawyers are embracing this lifestyle. But what is the life of a digital nomad really like?
Rowena Hennigan, who writes for Harvard Business Review, is a digital nomad along with her family. They have a “home base” in Spain but frequently go away for workcations that can last from weeks to months. She says, “compared to a traditional model of raising children, remote working has allowed my family to move away from that kind of intensity, and this way, we all get to move at a more sustainable and healthy pace.” Plus, her family are regularly exposed to new cultures, languages and natural beauty.
However, it doesn’t work for everyone. Francesca Specter, a writer for The Guardian, decided to country-hop and her “office” included beaches, cafes and coworking spaces. But along with struggling to find reliable Wi-Fi and fighting the terrible feeling of being left out, she wrote that she felt envious as she cooled her overheating laptop in the shade while holidaymakers relaxed by the pool. She said, “I was firefighting dull concerns, such as missing luggage or sleep loss after an overnight flight delay.”
So, it’s not for everyone, but if you ever feel like escaping the rat-race, why not give it a go?
18. What is the advantage of being a digital nomad according to the text?
A. A higher income. B. A better work-life balance.
C. A flexible work location. D. A faster career promotion.
19. Who was probably a digital nomad originally?
A. A blogger. B. A lawyer. C. An athlete. D. An accountant.
20. What does the word “workcations” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Changing jobs frequently. B. Working while on vacation.
C. Touring in different countries D. Taking breaks between jobs.
21. What is the author’s attitude towards digital nomads?
A. Opposed. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
【答案】18. C 19. A 20. B 21. B

【20题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“She says, “compared to a traditional model of raising children, remote working has allowed my family to move away from that kind of intensity, and this way, we all get to move at a more sustainable and healthy pace.” Plus, her family are regularly exposed to new cultures, languages and natural beauty.(她说:“与养育孩子的传统模式相比,远程工作让我的家庭摆脱了那种紧张状态,通过这种方式,我们所有人都能够以一种更可持续、更健康的节奏生活。”此外,她的家人可以经常接触新的文化、语言和自然美景)”可知,划线词指“一边度假一边工作”,即他们经常外出进行工作度假,这类行程可以持续数周到数月。
【21题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“So, it’s not for everyone, but if you ever feel like escaping the rat-race, why not give it a go?(所以,它并不适合所有人,但是如果你想要逃离激烈的竞争,为什么不试一试呢?)”可知,作者虽然承认它有局限,但总体态度是支持的。
D
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
As Robert Frost reminded us, choices are often difficult and will bring both a gain and a loss. Should I spend my Sunday playing golf or taking a day trip to the North Fork with my wife?
If you are a golfer as I am, you will say “Certainly, go playing golf.” Golf is perhaps the greatest challenge to self-improvement. In golf, every swing is counted and can easily be recalled and reviewed by the golfers as they lie in bed that evening, and therefore, self-improvement is pursued.
Now let us return to the question at hand. You will not be surprised to hear that I did in fact go to the North Fork. But, how has that improved me? Can it be quantified (量化)? In golf, whose goal is to complete the game with as few shots as possible, if I average 80 and I shoot a 76, I know that for that day at least I have improved upon my former self and thus feel satisfied.
You may argue that travel is not about self-improvement at all but just about having grand experiences. I beg to differ. It does matter how these things change and improve me. Seeing the folks dancing in the streets should change you. And talking to the manager of the biscuit shop ought to change you. I think travel does change us, but it’s very hard to say just how. How does one quantify buying a peach at a farm? Or how do you quantify the tasty taste of the scones (司康饼) at a stand?
Reviewers have had a hard time analyzing the meaning of Robert Frost’s poem. To be honest, I would say all of us have a hard time analyzing our wish to travel to faraway places. I am not sure what the answer is to this tricky question. I may not have made any holes-in-one on the North Fork but I did enjoy those scones.
22. Why does the author quote the poem?
A. To express the meaning of traveling.
B. To show the impact of choices.
C. To explain the challenges the poet met.
D. To introduce the general views to choices.
23. What does the author think of playing golf?
A. It leads to self-satisfaction.
B. It is the most challenging sports.
C. Its result is measurable.
D. It shows the potential for both gain and loss.
24. Which of the following proverb will the author agree with?
A. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. Every path has its own scenery.
D. You can’t judge a book by its cover.
【答案】22. B 23. C 24. C
根据第一段“As Robert Frost reminded us, choices are often difficult and will bring both a gain and a loss.(正如罗伯特·弗罗斯特提醒我们的那样,选择往往是艰难的,有得亦有失。)”可知,作者引用这首诗是为了表明选择带来的影响。
【23题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“In golf, whose goal is to complete the game with as few shots as possible, if I average 80 and I shoot a 76, I know that for that day at least I have improved upon my former self and thus feel satisfied.(高尔夫的目标是用尽可能少的杆数完成比赛。如果我的平均成绩是80杆,打出了76杆,我知道至少在那天我超越了过去的自己,因此感到满足。)”可知,作者认为打高尔夫的成果是可以量化衡量的。
【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据开篇诗句“‘Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.’(‘树林里分出两条路。而我——我选择了人迹更少的一条,从此决定了我一生的道路。’)”、第三段“In golf, whose goal is to complete the game with as few shots as possible, if I average 80 and I shoot a 76, I know that for that day at least I have improved upon my former self and thus feel satisfied.(高尔夫的目标是用尽可能少的杆数完成比赛。如果我的平均成绩是80杆,打出了76杆,我知道至少在那天我超越了过去的自己,因此感到满足。)”以及第四段“I think travel does change us, but it’s very hard to say just how. How does one quantify buying a peach at a farm? Or how do you quantify the tasty taste of the scones (司康饼) at a stand?(我认为旅行确实会改变我们,但很难说清究竟是如何改变的。你要怎样去量化在农场买到一颗桃子?又该如何量化小摊上司康饼那可口的滋味呢?)”可知,作者将高尔夫和旅行视作两种不同的选择,两条道路各有其独特的收获与美好。与C选项“Every path has its own scenery.(每条路都有属于自己的风景。)”表达意思相同。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
Muzak
The next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? ____25____. It's similar to the music you listen to, but it's not exactly the same. That's because this music was especially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don't even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway.
Quiet background music used to be called "elevator (电梯) music" because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name "Muzak". About one-third of the people in America listen to "Muzak" every day. The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are more tired. ____26____.
If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many of the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don't want their songs to be used as Muzak, but others are happy when their songs are chosen. Why? ____27____.
Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak doeswhat it is designed to do. Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in the background. ____28____. Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries.
___29___. They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or another, Muzak affects everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when they hear Muzak!
A. Some people don't like Muzak.
B. The music gives them extra energy.
C. Music is playing in the background.
D. Factory workers produce 13 percent more.
E. Muzak tends to help people understand music better.
F. They get as much as $4 million a year if their songs are used.
G. Muzak is played in most of the big supermarkets in the world.

Health is the foundation of everything. Without a strong body, we can hardly keep up with tight school schedules. Next comes study, which is our main task in high school and prepares us for our future. Socializing is also important, yet it should not take up too much of our time.

D. Ambitious.
