I keep remembering unusual things: the way she loved daffodils, jokes she told at the dinner table and the look in her eyes when she talked about my future. I knew about college before I’d never heard of high school; I was Mom’s second chance at the degree she never had.
Her parents pushed her too much, too hard, and she always wished she hadn’t let the pressure defeat her. She dropped out of college after one term for marriage and a secretarial job. While she never regretted marrying father, she always regretted giving up her dream of becoming an accountant. She was determined her eldest daughter would never miss an opportunity.
One of special times of my life was Christmas in my second school year, when I played Tiny Tim in a local community theater production of “A Christmas Carol.” Mom delighted in my endless rehearsal (排练) stories and spent hours helping me work out ways of disguise (掩饰) my long hair. There’s a line in the show: “And it was always said of him that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive had the knowledge.” Change the pronouns and that sentence describes Mom perfectly.
I never imagined she wouldn’t be here now. I never thought cancer could strike so quickly, could kill someone so strong and determined in only a year. She’s the only person I couldn’t imagine living without. Suddenly, I have no one to talk to about meaningless little things, no one whose advice I trust completely to help me with decisions. When I come home from school, I come home to an empty house, troubled by memories of the year she spent here dying. I remember the disastrous Thanksgiving when she was feeling terrible, and our wonderful last Christmas Eve together.

In San Francisco, a large group of sea lions move themselves out of the bay waters and hang out on PIER 39, which is a popular tourist destination. According to dock (码头) officials, this is the most sea lions seen in the region in 15 years.
“Over 1,000 sea lions have been counted this week,” PIER 39 harbormaster Sheila Chandor told many different media. “The surge in sea lions is usually a good sign of their strong population and healthy living environment,” said Adam Ratner, Director of Conservation Engagement at the Marine Mammal (海洋哺乳动物) Center in Sausalito, California.
“California sea lions are sentinels (哨兵) of the ocean,” Ratner said. Their population to some extent reflects the health of the ocean. Therefore, seeing a large number of Califormia sea lions is clearly a good thing.
For nearly 35 years, the slippery residents have been a star attraction for tourists. That autumn in 1989, PIER 39 had just been repaired, but the ships had not yet been moved back. At that moment, the sea lions unexpected arrival not only attracted fans but also created enemies. According to a website, some dock residents and workers were scared away by the strong and very unpleasant smell and noise of their new neighbors, while others saw these animals as a bright spot after the destructive Loma Prieta earthquake.
The officials sought help from the Marine Mammal Center to find a way to deal with sea lions. Ratner said that the final decision is to let the sea lions stay and coexist with humans. “The fact proves that this is really a good thing” he said. “This is just a proof of how we can truly work together and think about how we can share our coasts with marine mammals and other wildlife in a way that benefits all the parties involved.”
8. How does the author start the text?
A. By holding a conversation.
B. By answering a question.
C. By describing a phenomenon.
D. By comparing different opinions.
9. What does the underlined word “surge” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Sharp increase. B. Tight control.
C. Slow development. D. Sudden movement.
10. We can infer from the last paragraph that ______.
A. The sea lions at PIER 39 have always been popular among all dock residents.
B. After the Loma Prieta earthquake, all people thought the sea lions were a bright spot.
C. The officials’ decision shows humans and marine mammals can coexist beneficially.
D. The Marine Mammal Center forced the officials to make the decision to keep the sea lions.
11. What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A. Sea lions are pretty cool animals.
B. Animals and humans can live in harmony.
C. Watching sea lions might not be a proper action.
D. Sea lions should be driven out of PIER 39.
D
If you often exercise, there is a good chance for you to be more creative, according to a study of the links between physical activity and imagination. The study finds that active people come up with more and better ideas during tests of their inventiveness.
It has been proved that physical activity influences our thinking. Many studies show that our brains go through changes in response to physical activity, for during exercise our brains take in more blood, oxygen and nutrients (营养物), thus producing more new brain cells than those who don’t exercise. In this way, exercise raises our moods (情绪) and is likely to improve our abilities to reason and remember.
However, creativity is an abstract (抽象的) thinking skill, whose relationship with exercise has not been clear. Some past research suggested exercise does not directly affect creative thinking.
To learn more about how being active could possibly affect creativity, researchers at the University of Graz tracked the normal activities of a group of healthy adults. They equipped these volunteers with activity trackers for five days. Then they asked them to visit the lab. The researchers then rated their output on its creativity and other measures. The volunteers also completed standardized questionnaires about their moods.
The scientists found that the most active of the volunteers proved to be also the most creative, especially if they often walked or exercised properly. They are also likely to be in high spirits, although their moods were highest if they took part in energetic activities, rather than average ones. However, the link between activity, creativity and moods was light. This suggested that it was not improved moods, but physical activity, that had a greater influence on creativity.
The study didn’t take people’s whole lives into account and cannot tell us how exercise and other activities might shape creativity, if not by raising moods. But the results do suggest that active imaginations start with active lives.
12. How does physical activity change our brains?
A. By making more brain cells. B. By responding to thinking.
C. By supplying more nutrients. D. By increasing blood pressure.
13. What does Paragraph 4 mainly focus on?
A. The purpose of the study. B. The process of the study.
C. The findings of the study. D. The subjects of the study.
14. What do we know from Paragraph 5?
A. Those doing more energetic exercise are the most creative.
B. People’s moods are closely connected with their creativity.
C. Exercise plays a more important role in shaping creativity.
D. Effortless physical activities make people more creative.
15. What is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Is Exercise Good for Your Mental Health?
B. Can Exercise Make You More Creative?
C. What Makes You More Imaginative?
D. How Exercise Improves Your Mood?
